+MelissaSparx Nothing to do with honesty or integrity, he hasn't been able to get a record deal because simply, he's old hat. It's very sad actually watching this interview and he's become incredibly cringe worthy. I almost feel like putting my arm round him and telling him to go and have a nice quite cup of tea and a biscuit.
+MENSFORTHHILL99 you must not know what it's like to get a record deal and sell your everything to it for chump change. Especially now with the shit that's blasted on the radio. which is by-product of major record labels. Don't disregard this man because he doesn't sell out. He knows and most well established musicians know is to start your own record label. music business is an oxymoron.
NoJoshinJoshy Its a pity he doesn't Stand up for the rights of other bands! All The Rotter does is belittle people. I don't think that is the best way to behave in his situation TBH. The fact is, If he wants to dish it out then he can take it.
Got huge respect for John. Proper honest, considerate to human beings and not up his own arse. He doesnt try to be anything and speaks truly about bands that jump on band wagons to sell out. People say parliament is full of 'gentlemen', but John actually is an ideal gentlemen. ABSOLUTE LEGEND AND TOP LAD!
This man is the best interviewee I've ever seen, and a music legend at the same time, legend. One of the last English icons we have and people need to realise it
So many times I've seen John being interviewed by people that think they are smarter/wittier than a simple "punk" lol. He is one the most learned, sharpest people alive today.
john lydon is the most influential musician ever, he changed the way we all think regarding royalty, politicians ,racism and mainly music ....the old rule was awful we all owe him so much ....may he live for ever
The last 50% of any interview with John is always the best. He's always standoffish in the first half and once he settles in, he really just tells it like he sees it, unfiltered.
Sort of. More than that though. He's feeling for whether it'll be a real interviewe, or some tabloid mentality asshole trying to badger him And once he gets the feel, then he either relaxes and enjoys a good chatter, or he gives better than the interviewer can do, and entertains us with acid wit
I would LOVE to talk *and have a few pints* with John. Seems like one of the most honest, open people you would ever meet. Not to mention a great sense of humor! One in a million. :)
Johnny is the fucking man. I love how no matter how old he gets, he never loses that youthful rebelious spirit he was so famous for. Whereas most of my childhood idols got old and boring, Johnny still has his spark.
I grew up with his music and every time I hear a song from The Pistols or PIL it takes me straight back to my youth. We were right at the start of the Punk,Goth and Skin culture/scene. It wasn't just music but rather a full lifestyle outside of "the norm". Everything seemed to change around the time of bands like Nirvana where everything we seen as being "alternate" blended together becoming image and mainstream trend. Johnny has always stayed outside of the box and held true to his beliefs. He will never be placed into any ones category or labelled. A man that wont sell out!
It has taken me years to understand Johnny Rotten and something I couldn't quite grasp when I was younger. He was total anti-establishment, which I thought was stupid and unlearned. Keep it real Johnny and keep it going.
Always thought he's protested too much as it were-something hasn't exactly sat right with his media appearances, but will always be a fan, still love rise, careering and religion
Absolutely love Johnny. He is a true star and legend. I could watch and listen to him all day, he really is a tonic! The most fascinating and absolutely gorgeous rock star! ❤❤
i was extremely lucky to have seen them this summer. it was something i though i would never have the opportunity to do. amazing sound, amazing show. praying they put together a new release.
+Lucien Joppen I thought that was a bit unfair and unnecessarily adversarial. I did skip through the interview a bit but the interviewer was fair and respectful in all the bits I thought.
This guy is awesome ! The wild energy of yesterday is today a smart energy. He has got the honesty and truth, without fear the system, to talk and say what hi thinks. I really wish every artist (musician, actor, writer, etc.) could be that honest and free ! Regards from Argentina !
John never gives an interviewer an easy time LOL. If I ever had to interview him, I'd be terrified, and I love the guy! John, you changed our lives. Just keep going....
Lydon has made many, many intelligent comments and observations on many important issues, including some related to drug policy and politics. His use of satire and wordplay also betray his high intelligence. CZcams is full of examples for those with the intellect to find and understand them. Again, I have no doubt you will find it difficult to do either.
Smartest guy to have walked this earth in a long time. Huge respect to John for everything he's done, some small quotes by him have been enough for me to entirely change my view of the world for the better.
"listen to the stuff, make from the heart, the soul, is honest, every single thing i do is honest i dont know any other way, My mother and my father raised me with the basic philosophy of: be yourself son; and I have been." This is genuine rock & roll
Love, John. Says what he thinks and takes no crap from anybody. This guy tried to trip him up and utterly failed. John is under no illusions about the world and he's totally spot-on, as always.
When I got into music, this man was talking sense while the media ridiculed or picked at what he was saying. Since then, politicians and media moguls have nibbled at his public existence like he is a magnet of mockery. But like he says himself, the music now is just as valid as 30 years ago. No matter what he says, whether you agree with him or detest his words - he never speaks in riddles or tells lies. You have to respect his open and direct innocence in approaching so many subjects.
My hero for my lifetime. Always face on, out right. Wish I had the chance to meet him personaly. I had a concert ticket with backstage-pass in 2010 but the concert have been canceled. That was sad :-(
I absolutely love how amazing Lydon is as a speaker... most interviewers (especially this 'upper class' newsreader) expect him to be just another dirty rocker trying to promote their new album... they never expect him to be so well spoken and they always get put in their place. He's just the best at outsmarting them and making them look stupid.
That last line is wonderful. I have always tried to be myself, for many years I was blocked. But when I became a man and they couldn't stop me being me, they rejected me for all I am worth. Why? Because I chose honesty over hypocrisy and lies and appeasement.
JOHN IS A BRILLAINT AND INTELLIGENT MAN .. HE SAYS HUMAN BEINGS ARE HUMAN BEINGS HE HITS IT RIGHT ON AND I ADMIRE HIS HONESTY AND OUT SPOKENESS.. KEEP ROCKIN' JOHNNY!
I'll just say it like it is: everytime I hear Johnny Lydon speaking in interviews I tell myself "man, he really gets it". I admire him for that. And... even if he's somewhat wrong regarding the Beatles and not so much concerning the Stones, it's just his opinion and it makes some sense even if I'm not in total agreement. That is to say I think Johnny's one of the few people whom I actually consider relevant (whether I'm a Pistols or a PIL fan or not, which I'm not really, I may say I simplu like them). Btw, the way he considered the House of Parliament as "not being people" was just funny. Yep, he's not merely serious, he's also funny - always.
If by "up himself," might you mean (as we Americans say) "FULL OF HIMSELF"? In other words, Lydon comes across as his biggest fan and we should all be grateful for his bringing "honesty" into music in general.
Best interview ive seen him ever do. Should stay just like this with his delivery and on point without coming across to rude and oiky. Everything he said was correct. Doesnt need to be silly etc
I don't care bout jonnys views . His passion and directness are admirable . And he has a dry sense of humor that is well negative or positive ? This guy knows his mind and his so unique x

+Jonathan 999 As a spoken word "battle" JR will always have the edge because he can say pretty much what he wants whereas the interviewer has rules he has to follow.
I have to agree and disagree. I think that journalist knew exactly what he was getting into, and how to deal with what he was getting into. It takes two to tango, and that interview was by far one of the best I’ve seen. Also, you have to realise that Lydon isn’t an asshole, he’s a compassionate man. He’s not going to give the interviewer a hard time. He’s going to give the interviewer great interview material. He isn’t about disrespect, he’s about integrity. Yes, it’s confronting and sometimes on the edge of awkwardness, but he knows what he’s doing. He’s always bringing it back to himself and his values. He’s not being contrary for the sake of it. He’s being contrary because the interviewer is giving him the questions and challenges for Lydon to state his position and his purpose. It’s a skilled interview on both sides, like two tennis players who are arch rivals, yet congratulate each other at the end of a good match, winner or loser. Because no one loses. They play, they earn, they demonstrate the art of the game. There is always the smile of someone enjoying some good honest challenging banter on the part of the interviewer, probably glad that his questions always reveal something interesting, honest, revealing, insightful, poignant, and incisive. It’s clearly a game of mutual respect. The interviewer has nothing at stake. If he’s saying Mick Hucknall, he’s just daring a curveball move, whether it hits its mark or not. And he steers the conversation. It’s probably why Lydon chose to be interviewed by him, because he knows he’ll get so say what he needs and wants to say, and have time to articulate what he wants to say fully. One of the great mistakes about people’s perceptions of the punk movement was thinking it was all about being impolite and recklessly unfocusedly contemptuous, when in fact it was clear in its targeting and a plea for mutual respect. After all, when the Pistols swore on air in the famous Grundy interview, it was because Grundy was treating Siouxsie Sioux, if it was her, as a sex object. This incensed Lydon/Rotten because of the lack of respect and politeness shown. Lydon is respectful and polite to a fault in this interview, calling there interviewer “sir” and so on. Lydon is playful and straightforward, not an asshole in my opinion. Not always. If you watch him in interviews with people who know nothing, talk shit, and have done no research, then he is completely objectionable and objection. Here he ends his interview with “peace!” and toasts the interviewer with his coffee cup. I am certain, once the interview was finished, that the interviewer - usually saddled with interviewing politicians who talk shit and never answer any question straightforwardly, openly and honestly - said “thank you, that was great”, to which Lydon would have said “my pleasure sir”.
Goddamit man Johnny is so intelligent and people don't see it because of the looks. It's fascinating to hear him speak because if you pay attention he is actually very careful with words.
John Lydon has to be the most honest musician in the world.
Mark Alex honest, really, he just contradicted his self at least five times, he's a tosser, a fake
