Following in the footsteps of actors like Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and Jared Leto, Joaquin Phoenix is the latest actor to take on the intimidating role of Joker. Hangover director Todd Phillips has taken a swing at an origin movie for the clown prince, and we get to explore Gotham City in 1989 before Bruce Wayne even put on the cowl and became Batman.
Although Phoenix is absolutely mesmerizing on-screen, the movie itself definitely raises some questions. Like are there any parts of it that aren’t inspired by or lifted from Scorsese movies like The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver? Who was even filming in that comedy club? And what exactly is this movie trying to say?

I had the *exact* same thought about the superfluousness of the flashback scene when I saw Joker. It's like the yin to the yang of the beach scene in Drive where the camera pans out and the scene ends exactly when it should be showing a bit of the old ultraviolence.

I LOVED this video, especially combining two of my favorite CZcamsrs 🤣 that was amazing!
My theory is Arthur Fleck isn’t actually the Joker. He’s just a violent murderer in a mental institution who read a lot of Batman comics and convinced himself that he was the Joker. Most of the movie is just a warped version of his reality that he actually believed happened.
I like it. It would explain a lot as well as be a compelling vision of how fiction intrudes into reality.
My theory is that it was just a good psychological movie that they slap the Batman logo on to get More viewers are whatever you do fo Movies

When I said "for no reason" I ment that it being funny wasn't a good enough reason for how MUCH I was laughing. Basically I was saying I laughed more than what was reasonable at that joke.

First time watching this one! I only discovered Ryan George in the last year or two so been having more in my recommended so glad I finally get to see this one. I remember the Joker movie as the first R movie I ever saw and I loved it!

The collab I didn’t know I needed
The explanation for the convenience of having him taped in 1981 is...that particular club probably films all of their acts just in case they get one who is really talented and can send it to Murray. That was actually true of some big city comedy clubs in the 1980s. They worked as sort of “scouts” for the industry, discovering new talent.
Ya its a scout club that Author went on hoping to get on Murray and he did, just not for the reason he wanted to. That is an excellent explanation!
Eric Scott - Thanks! Also...1981 isn’t ancient history. For Pete’s sake, the VCR was already in many households since 1975. I bet if we searched on CZcams for videos of comedians in comedy clubs from 1980-1982...there are many. @@sign543 Ya some people have questioned how he could have a VCR. While it did exist by 1981, I think it would be way too expensive for poor people such as Author. He used the VCR after paying Sophia a visit so maybe he killed her and stole it from her? I'm pretty convinced that this whole thing is a story he was thinking about or telling the therapist in the last scene anyway so maybe all this doesn't matter anyway.
James Midnite - How do you know that? Maybe they record all of the stand-up acts, and maybe the camera is mounted in the back wall where it can’t be seen unless you know it’s there.
James Midnite - That makes no sense. You’re making up arbitrary rules. Maybe they record EVERY PERFORMANCE, since they might also get awful ones like that one. For the comedic factor...in fact, the evidence for this would be that Murray used it! Comedy shows look for cringe performances, too.
