  • This week, Alex tests the high mileage Skoda Octavia’s fuel economy by hypermiling it from London to the Nürburgring and back in one day. On one tank of diesel. Will he make it?

Set the radar cruise control to Nissan Qashqui mode (formerly known as Audi mode), and just let the car ride along. Achieved 90mpg on the 22 mile run, which did include a significant 2 mile climb at the start.

We had to rip the tank off because of the quantity of holes in it was overwhelming, but we just shoved a red gas can under the hood and filled it occasionally. It was quite efficient for a truck. Eastern European taxi drivers blank out their EGR and get leaner tune on the engine to get crazy l/100 numbers

    • @Tore_Lund
      @Tore_Lund Před 6 lety +64

      EGR valves were invented to improve economy as well as emissions, but driving with a choked up one makes it worse. You don't get a lean mix by blanking your EGR but as you reciculate less exhaust you add more oxygen which the ECU compensates for by adding more fuel (not to lean the mix out), the cabbies must apply another trick, The oxygen sensor needs to be fooled too?

    • @Tore_Lund
      @Tore_Lund Před 6 lety +6

      An EGR reduces fuel consumption on part throttle (easy cruising), but the problem is that it gets clogged up and leaks all the time reducing power. Secondly it also fouls the intake valves which eventually makes your engine run worse. I too drive a 1998 petrol car made without EGR from the factory. I also get 45 US mpg highway and 40 in the city. If I sneak around however at 35-45 mph I get 70-90 mpg. So an EGR is really not useful if you know how to drive a car efficiently. It is just one of those gimmicks made for the manufacturer to pass the NEDEC driving cycle test.

      Hi, I am from Hungary, but living in the UK, owning a 1.9 TDI Octavia estate. The first thing I did after purchase is removing the EGR. I drive my car regularly on long distances. Last year we had been to Barcelona, and back to Hungary. On a long run with a heavy foot, it takes 580-640 miles with a fill up doing 80-100 miles/hour (no speeding, I do high speeds in Germany on the autobahn). My car is a 52 reg PD engine with a VNT turbo (unfortunately).

      EGR reduces NOx emissions (the worst kind of emissions), don't be a dick to the air you breathe, just clean the thing. I bet it is cheaper to clean it up a few times, than to remove it.

    In the late 80's, I had a '75 Dodge Monaco.
    When I first got the car, I noticed that, if I stopped quickly, and the gas tank wasn't full, the car would rock back and forth for awhile. I took notice of that, and purposely ran out of gas to see how much it would take.
    I put 38 gallons of gas in, not including the gallon that I was keeping in the trunk for emergency.
    About a month later, I decided to hypermile for a whole tank of gas as the car seemed to get good mileage on highway driving.
    I got 996 miles before the car started sputtering. That gave me my numbers.
    The spare gallon was dumped in, and I got my gas, and went home.
    With the 38 gallons that went in giving me 996 miles, that came out as a shy hint over 26 MPG.
    In a modern car, 26 MPG is no great achievement. However, in a two ton car with the aerodynamics of a filing cabinet, and a V8, it's nothing short of a miracle.
    The car...
    318 V8, automatic, no tag on the rear end...
    However, two turns of the drive shaft turned the wheel once...
    The car was very fast, but about as quick as a snail off the line.
    I believe that the car was probably ordered new for highway use, which would explain its poor city performance, and city MPG.

    about 20 minutes into driving home, I get a call from the dealership asking if I could come back to sign another paper. Said yes and figured "I'll fill it up before getting on the highway"
    Didn't find a station before getting on the highway, but figured "can fill it up along the highway"
    Didn't find a single station for more than half the trip home, with the warning saying 10km left of fuel for like 15 minutes straight. Turned off everything, even the daytime lights, and I guess got lucky enough to find a station like 20km away from home or less.

    The MPG calculator is not "lying". When you fill up all the way to the top of the filler neck, the computer is registering speed and distance traveled, but is not detecting a decrease in fuel level, so it'll keep adding range to your trip. I've got a petrol SAAB with the 2 liter that I took on a trip to Greece (from Romania), and on leaving Bucharest, just doing 90km/h it was showing over 1000 km range and climbing, which I knew couldn't be true, no matter how light-footed I was going to be.
    The fact that the VW 1.9 Diesel is economical anyway lead to it taking longer for it to start registering your fuel consumption. That's also why you'll be potting along with the fuel gauge staying steady and then it'll seem like it's suddenly started dropping without you changing your pace.
    That being said, awesome trip regardless and well done to you guys :D

    • @tommy4862
      @tommy4862 Před 6 lety +5

      I don't think so, there must be a sensor measuring amount of fuel going into the engine that's how you can read your "current" MPG, I would think this is being used to calculate how much fuel you burned over distance. But it may vary from car to car.

    • @mrc7966
      @mrc7966 Před 5 lety +4

      vtr0104 Current MPG and distance remaining figures are calculated using fuel levels passing through the injectors, not fuel remaining in the tank. Most cars will be inaccurate to 5.5% approximately.

      Those trip computers are known to be wildly inaccurate. As an example, I recently did a long distance journey in a 1.6 petrol Citroen C4. With 4 adults in the car plus a week's luggage, we were driving down a 50mph average speed camera section of the M6 in Staffordshire with the cruise control on and the on board computer at one point hit 180mpg due the extremely low amount of fuel I was using (basically tick over)
