I used a skateboard to sit on to roll back and forth removing staples, it worked pretty well. My knees cant take the floor
Great Idea woman!
You should be in the X Games
Or if you don't have knee pads, use a piece of the old carpet.
Lanette Holloway thanks for the tip😁😁😁😁
Genius!!
I'm a 13 year old girl and I did this to my room all by myself. It wasn't hard. The difference though is it was concrete under the carpet, and there were nails instead of staples which made it easy for me. I am studying to be an interior designer and a architect. My first project will be my own home. I have to go to Lowe's and decide what I should use for the floor.🖌💼💳📅📌🛠🏘 (random emojis😂)
wow ur 13 that amazing! nobody has ever been 13 before!
@@scobsil185 is a troll
Keep grinding b/c you sound so similar to me and i want to be successful so i want to make sure i give you some good advice. Stay blessed 💰💰💯🔥
You're 13. Yeah right.
Awesome job! I'm almost 40 and worried about doing this. You're very independent. Not many people your age even think about doing this.
Im f14 and I finally got tired of my parents saying "they'd do it eventually" so I finally decided to do it myself! This was a very simple video that helped me a lot and it wasn't confusing at all!!! Turns out I already had beautiful cherry wood underneath that ugly carpet!
Next year you will be a fighter jet f15
niiice, cherry wood!
YES parents say they'll do it but they never do, I'm 13 and just took out my carpeting AND put in my flooring.
I almost had same thing lol beautiful old wood floor, I had to sand my ass off.., it had some staining from liquids, so , I picked a darker stain to match the stains..then polyurethane the hell out of it. I left the nails and nail holes for character. The house was over 100 years old. I'm ALOT older but my first project.i did..
@@jesseelisabeatty8205There's a chemical that might get rid of that. See Heywood wakefield restoration
Okay, I am a 60 year old widow that now lives in a mobile home. You have completely inspired me that I can do this! My mobile home is actually a 1970 home, and I am ready to really make it mine. Thanks so much for the help. My place is not big, so I really feel that this is something I can do.
That sounds wonderful Donna! Have you began your project yet? If so, how did it turn out?
Way to go Donna. I'm also a 60 year old woman doing my own carpet removal and this video really helps me feel I can do it.
I am also 60 years old and I'm a widow and yeah I am trying to do the carpet the rest of the carpet it's in the dining room area where I have my freezers and two big shelves wish me luck my hands are not very strong I have arthritis but I'm going to tough it through and see if I can't do it
What’s the update
Donna I need to know if this advice is legit
It's a really good idea to wear eye protection and long sleeves during this process. Have a relative who got some padding in her eye and ended up in the emergency room with nasty results. Also a buddy and I got an itchy reaction from skin contact with the padding during removal. Bad stuff.
echanos good idea, always best to stay safe :D
Thanks for the advice. Will be removing carpeting next weekend. Never thought about glasses or long sleeves
I also wear gloves, @ all times! I like to keep my hands "separate" from all potential harm.
Thank you 🙌🙌 tired of waiting around for people to help me with this stuff. After watching this I'm pretty sure I can do it all myself. Carpet is coming up tomorrow
hi
Did you get it done ??
Girl same.😂
Very well explained! You make it look easy.
Your carpet looks new. Mine was disgusting with pet stains.
Suggest next time you list the tools we'll need at the beginning. Box cutter, duct tape, gloves, etc.
Thank you!
Almost 8 years ago you made this & this is still the easiest video I’ve seen . Pulling my carpet up to put dont the peel & stick vinyl flooring & you just made it sooo much easier.
Meeee to gworl 👀💯
That doesn’t look like old nasty carpet u should see mines 😭😂😭😭 great video
Lol almost could return it to the store and refund $ back
Right! Ours are nasty and stinky!
kirsten markley omg same my cats pooped on my carpet when i was at the beach for a week and it wad horrible and i know that i’m 11 months late😂😂
*Mine. Unless your were talking about your multiple underground explosive devices
throw up stains and spills Its bad in my home
IVE INSTALLING CARPET FOR 18 YEARS ,👍😁USE A STANDUP SCRAPER FOR STAPLES,AND I CUT STRIPS OF CARPET TO TIE UP ROLLS OF CARPET🛠
Mike Dambowic weird flex
Home Depot calls it a "industrial floor scraper" and it's truly a lifesaver. It will yank out a majority of the staples. The few staples it doesn't catch, you can go back and pull manually with pliers. Try to scrape WITH the wood grain so you don't take chunks out of your sub floor.
Thanks for the tip brother
this helped me a lot. just moved into my first house with carpet from the 70's that had to go. thank you
Happy to help
Damn
How long did it take you
70s?? Was it shag ?? I bet that was nasty . Just doing my house I got and the carpet is nasty and was down since 2009 and it was bad bad . I can’t imagine 1970s lol .
One tip I saw on another video, was using a floor scraper to take the staples out of the floor. Much faster and easier. I like the folding and cutting and then taping up the sections to be hauled out. Great tips, thanks!
Thanks Tina Wade for the floor scraper tip. Removing the staples is tedious if you do it by hand :D
Thanks so much for this - especially the folding/cutting method! I managed to clear 2 bedrooms, 2 hallways and a staircase of carpet and underlay in just a few hours!
We've lived in our house for 10 years and after 10 years of nagging, I'm going to have to do this stuff myself. So thanks for the nice, clear instructions. I'm going to get started on this in a couple of days. Not looking forward to those staples though :-D
......wear a good mask when removing the carpet just in case there is a lot of dust on the floor, wear eye protectors when removing the staples....
@Lauralee LA Brie Oh wow!!! Is it just cracked, or is it broken into chunks? You can put down a skim coat of new concrete if it isn't broken into big wobbly chunks. At least I think you could.
Did you complete your carpet or flooring job? Turn out okay?
Same here! If you want something done, you have to do it yourself.
bout time you do something
Thank you for this great very clear tutorial! I was able to do a room in an hour. Using your technique. And course help from Jesus to push me to do it!. Thank you again.
I’ve been installing carpet for 7 years and the best way to remove the staples and tack strips is to scrape them up with a stand up scraper, it’s faster and way easier on the body but great vide 👍🏽
If you’ve been doing carpet for so long why did you watch this 😂
You should use a razor floor scraper for the staples. Just like sweeping them away. So much faster and easier! 👍🏼
That carpet looks amazing compare to what’s in my bedroom that I want to pull up so bad
Its amazing how many things I have either learned or saved timed doing after just one or two video's. This was one of them. The tip to start in the corner was great as the carpet I was removed was significantly thicker and heavier than I expected and despite my planning on doing sections, by removing the corner of my chosing and then taking it from there, gave me complete freedom to complete this task very efficiently. As for the staples, I used up using a spade shovel and saved a lot of time although I was shocked as how many I kept finding thereafter. Thank you for sharing!
I'm ripping out the carpetting this week. Thanks for the tips and the time making this tutorial
Thanks Donna Gottshall - glad to help you any time :)
thank you for this as a young person with no experience to this kind of stuff 😟 I've been wanting to do a hardwood floors because it's easy to clean
My favorite handy man with a personality :-) I love it.
Cutting the carpet into smaller pieces was my Tip of the Video. 🤔 I’ll remember that. 😃
I’m about to start a DIY remodeling project to save some 💸💰💸. After the carpeted rooms are finished, the kitchen and cabinets should be easy to remove.
Thanks for sharing a very helpful video.
Thank you for this video, I managed to remove carpet in 3 rooms all by myself. Thank you for the tips.
The staple removing is very tedious and you get knee pain, but it saved us some money
Great video, thanks for making this. You really broke it down into simple terms and I was able to clear out my basement's nasty carpet in a single day's work. I know this is almost 10 years old now but I'm going to be looking through your other videos for more DIY instrux.
Thank you for this easy video on how to remove carpet. We made sure we had all the tools you suggested. We recently removed old carpet after many years. Your video was a tremendous help. Thank you again.
LOL. I love how the heading is so direct "Old Nasty"!
Love this video, man. I like that you kept in your mistakes and knowing how to fix the squeaks is a gift from the gods!
Wow, you made the steps so easy, gave clear instruction and the video is not long! I am a single mom with a house to run and repair on my own and now I will be able to handle some of these tasks on my own! thank you!!
This is awsome... This man knows what he is talking about ...
Great video! Made removing the carpet easy to understand. The job was tedious but really rewarding.
Thanks for the tips! I followed your video this morning and pulled up all the carpet, padding and carpet tacks in 2nd bedroom. I was well prepared, had all my tools, went smoothly, and there were only a few staples I had to pull out thankfully.
If you're a DIYer, if you have a hoe (garden tool, not a reference to another human), that works great to scrape up staples. I myself am a contractor and have a stand up scraper, if you're not opposed to spending $30 on one, that's the way to go. Also, no need to fold your carpet over, 95% of the time you can just release it from the tackstrip around the entire perimeter and cut the top of the carpet into strips. The only time you will have diffuculty cutting through the top is if you're carpet is so old it is saturated with dirt, or you didn't vacuum first, which I recommend doing.

Wonderful Instruction!
Wow, 28yr old woman here and am so impressed by the young gals in the comments! Am going to attempt this and I’ve definitely gotten my confidence boosted! Thanks for the video ❤
This is an awesome video for a newbie!! I'm actually excited about removing my carpet now - lol :)
+Valerie Saunders thanks, you'll have it out in no time. What kind of floor are putting in?

He can even be a great Hollywood star! Great video... thank you!
Thanks, although I'd rather be on CZcams than in Hollywood, haha
LOVED that open-mouthed thumbs up there, guy. :) Seriously though, this has been very helpful. You demystified the process for me. Thanks, Jeff.
Jeff, I was so pumped for you when you fixed that squeak like a total badass! Nice tips my friend, subbed!
THANK YOU for this instructive, well said video! Great tips, and I'm actually looking forward to removing some carpet now. 😁
Fantastic info. thank you so much for sharing, man!
+Alessandro Morelli thank you, glad it helped 👍
Thank you from Australia.
The first bit (cutting out the corner) was exactly what I needed to know before starting my big reno!
This was the most clear and concise video I found! Thanks!
I think I'm going to just buy a new house.
... And here I am... Wishing I could buy even an old, small house...
Newsflash: if you buy a new house, usually built by contractors or commercial builders, anything that wasn't built for "yourself", it will have substandard EVERYTHING! Corners will have been cut everywhere. Sure, it'll look nice but you'll soon be redoing everything. This is how houses with carpet came about. No sane person with even modest mental faculties would install carpet in their own house. Carpet is an abomination :-) Or aluminum wiring. Or substandard electric panels, etc. Codes won't save you from everything.
Same.
true to that
Did you buy a new house 😁😂
Thanks, I recently bought my first home and have had to learn things as I go, so this helps a ton. I'd love to see a how-to on doing laminate flooring, as that is hopefully going to be the next big project.
+Mike Reprogle congrats on your first home, it's a huge accomplishment. Any time you have a question, please reach out, I'd be happy to help
Wow, the way you explain is just falls natural and easy to understand thank you
Thank you for this video! You made this DIY project seem so manageable.
Best carpet removal video! Thanks!
Alicia Wall thanks so much, glad you liked it. Hope the video helped :D
Thank you so much. I'm doing work around my Mom's condo on a budget and felt a little overwhelmed. This was EXTREMELY helpful.
Awesome! Super pumped it was helpful; btw, you're a great daughter :)
Thank you for this video! Your personality and easy to follow instructions were incredibly helpful
Great explanation! Thanks for the thorough walkthrough!
This video was very helpful! I bought my first house in October and have been putting off refinishing the original 1920s hardwood floor (in one of the bedrooms that the previous owner had carpeted and then removed the carpet but left the staples and tack strips--go figure). I wasn't sure where to begin for the staple removal. Thanks!
Melinda Fletcher super stoked about your new home!! Congrats. Glad the video helped you with your project :D
That is one sharp utility knife 😳
Obviously I need a new one
Thank you for the helpful video! I can't wait to remove our carpet and reveal the beautiful antique wood flooring underneath!
YOU GUYS ARE SO PROFESSIONAL! THESE VIDEOS ARE VERY INFORMATIVE AND EFFECTIVE, THANK YOU!
I really like how this prepares for certain conditions, so can avoid it later on. I was just planning on removing the carpet and putting in wooden floors. But this has made take chance to fix the imperfections of the dump of a house I have to live in. Unlike my useless father (which I am sympathetic towards despite for his barbaric behaviour) I am going to fix the house. I am unable to continue living the same way without changing.
+Michelle Herrick keep your head up, you can do any project you set out to do 👍
I like floating floors. Waterproof. Cheaper than wood. More durable.
Good stuff man you save me some money. Big ups dude......
Thanks invesible101
I got mine fitted for $50 but I had to take the. Old carpet of first
Great video and attitude! Thanks for the lesson!
Perfect video! Thank you, much appreciated! Exactly what I was looking for/needed.
Is it bad that my 15 month old can pull the carpet up no problem?
Okay! I’m going to do this myself 🙏🏻 😂🙏🏻
Me too😁
EXACTLY what I needed to see.. thank you so much for posting this video. Very helpful!!
Awesome video. Thank you for all the information 🙏
You can also use the old pad as kneepads.
We cut our carpet into rectangles the size of throw rugs to be used in garage, truck bed when moving, etc.
Good idea.
Thank you for making this video! I will be moving soon and I didn’t know how I would be getting this done. Thank you! God bless!
Great video! You explained everything very well and I am actually looking forward to tearing up my carpet and following your clear instructions! Thank you for a job well done!
I use a medium size spackle tool to get under those hard to grab staples. And I use the same spackle trowel or whatever it's called to get under the carpet tack, followed by a flathead screwdriver to pry each section up. It's a lot easier than trying to hammer a crowbar underneath!
I WISH my carpet looked that "nasty".
Thank you for keeping short and simple. Peace
Jeff you’re the man! Thanks for your expertise!
Title: “Old nasty carpet”
*Carpet in the video actually looking good*
Me thinking: “Damn, he should see my carpet, I wonder what he would think..”
I am 69 years old and rent an old farmhouse. I caused a patch in the hallway to rot the carpet (its a long story.) I bought some good unused carpet at a place where you buy all kinds of junk. I want to rip up the whole of the ruined carpet area (about 6 feet x 4 feet) and replace it.
I cannot understand though why would one need to rip up the underlay if one is going to lay new carpet on it? I am not in the pink of health and the whole thing is daunting to me. I have no one to help me, but I think I may be able to borrow the tools and get the job done.
Thanks for your clear advice.
How did it go for you? I wouldn't worry about replacing the pad if it's in good shape, Linda.
Thanks Jeff, I appreciate you demonstrated. I am much sure, I can do it now by myself. Thanks again
Thank you for this help! I've been needing to remove the old carpet for a long time.
What if i want to do stained concrete
best to wear some jeans and long sleeves the padding we just pulled up the other day really fucked us up bad
Awesome video man. Nice and concise and full of good information!
Thanks so much! This was a great help. I was able to do my spare room in no time thanks to this video!
I’m planing to rip out the carpet and install new laminate flooring. What should I do with the base boards?
you can keep the baseboards in place and space the laminate accordingly, e.g. leave 1/4" gap between laminate and baseboards. BUT read the laminate directions for specific spacing. Then you can cover that space with shoe molding, e.g. quarter round or smaller.
4:33 my dad and I use a scraper it’s way easier and faster
Thank you so much for making these videos!! As a new home owner with no ‘handy’ ppl in my like this sooo amazing!
Great video! You helped ease our minds about a major home renovation we are doing on a tight deadline. Thank you!
+Mimi West awesome. Glad it helped. Why the tight deadline? Home sale?
Jeff, that was brand new carpet ! How did u have the heart to remove it ?!

Thank you so very much for your video! I had no idea how to start. Your video was very informative….simple and direct to the point! Love it!
I think anyone who visits here is tired of nagging their sig other to get things done and wanna diy lol
Exactly what’s happening here
I really want to try this but I'm scared I'll mess it up.
+sunny sunshinee don't worry, this project is pretty hard to mess up 👍
If you're a women, leave it alone because you would most like mess it up.
If you don't know the difference between women and woman, you probably shouldn't say anything.
sunny sunshinee
Well the point is to tear stuff up. Putting the new carpet on, Maybe get some help or a pro. It's not that hard, but it's pretty easy to mess up on the cutting.
That's the fun part is messing up. Then you learn from the mistakes. I have taken the carpet out of my kitchen, bathroom, laundry room and a small walk in closet. For some reason the previous owner carpeted the entire house and with my two boys those areas had to go. Lamite floors were way easier to clean. I did most of it with out my husband's help while he was at work. It's just getting over that fear of failure or not looking good. I started my carpet riping up in the small walk in closet. It helped boost my confidence to do the bigger rooms. Plus it's cheaper to fix a small room than a larger room if do make mistakes cutting. Have a great day 🙂
This guy is fantastic.
Excellent viddy, fast direct clear!!!!
use a ice scraper on the staples its much faster .
I hope you’re a teacher
Thank you, this was both informative and fun to watch.
You make it look so easy. Thanks for sharing.
