    Just watched it. I agree with Dan. What irked me the most was how 2-dimensional the Melinda character was written. Like, I wanted to know more what motivates her to cuckold Vic over and over and over again. It’s implied into one scene & it’s barely enough. Too many weird scenes.

    • @patrycjabartosz2459
      @patrycjabartosz2459 Před 2 lety +5

      Her motivations are changing during the movie. In the beginning, she wants to provoke her husband to some reaction - emotions, actions, expression may be madness. Later she knows he is reacting but in a different way she expects- she continues to check how far he will act - it is kind of a game of her and her ego but last romance is pure curiosity if He will kill for her and when he did - her love to him start to be stronger again. It is understandable when You look into some histories of killer couples and how the psychology of those couples works.

    • @JoyHarrison
      @JoyHarrison Před 2 lety

      Melinda is motivated by her constant need for passion and excitement. She talks about Vic being boring. She wants him to show his love for her with wild abandonment. That's why she let him sleep in her room only after he becomes a murder suspect. That excited her.

    The most annoying thing with the Licorice Pizza snobs and their discourse was making it out to be the only problem was the age of the characters. The lead actress was 29 when the movie was filmed and the lead actor was 17. If the genders were swapped, you would’ve heard about this endlessly. There is no right or wrong for liking or disliking a film. Film is art and art is *completely subjective.* Other forms of art, whether it's literature, music, or paintings are also subjective. I have never in my life, nor will I EVER be, someone who argues with a person who likes or doesn't like something I do. My enjoyment of a work of art is in NO WAY influenced by someone else liking or disliking it.

    @partridgestorm Před 2 lety

    I would contend though, the argument, "You just didn't understand the movie" is as old as time and is not going away any time soon. And I agree with this sometimes. Sometimes I come out of a movie and ask, "What the heck were the reviewer watching when they reviewed this?" I don't think I experienced this with you Dan, you are always very prepared and logical with opinions in your reviews. However, despite someone's educational background and evidence that they are indeed not a dum dum, a reviewer can have an experience that is much different than someone else when watching a film. Case in point, The Josie and The Pussycat's film. No one "got it" when it first came out, but when I saw it, my experience was much different than reviewers. There can be an echo chamber when it comes to movies, and having a strong independent opinion is a hard thing to do, which is why you are a good reviewer Dan. You take into account several angles during reviews, and you don't discredit someone else's opinion.

    Dan, I agree that many Fans and critics are weaponizining the "you just don't get how to view this film" argument. However, it is undeniably true that sometimes one needs to shift their perspective in order to appreciate a particular performance or Film. I know I had to do this for many years with any Nic Cage performance I saw. I just didn't respect him, or his output until I read an interview explaining both his technique and goals as a performer. Suddenly I understood and enjoyed every performance I'd previously derided because I saw the method to his madness so to speak. That being said, I have no interest in seeing Deep Water. If you don’t full understand the context of something, and I can tell based on how you’ve expressed your opinion, you should be called out on it. There’s a difference between saying you just don’t prefer something, and calling something terrible because of your preferences. If you offer opinions about movies to the public, then you open yourself up for pushback.

    Deep Water is just not for me. I can accept that a movie may be well-acted, technically adept along with the inclusion of some intriguing dialogue. Admittedly it happens rarely, but I do disagree with reviews posted by Dan. However, when criticism is clearly expressed, points are made with no judgements regarding the "quality" of the audience or critics, I can appreciate an alternate opinion. That being said, I am still miffed concerning Dan Murrell's review of the Book of Boba Fett. 😉
    Beyond those comic book scooters being a HUGE mistake, it was a good series.

    Lazy screenwriting has a name. It’s called Sam Levinson

    If you stop watching after the first third, it’s a good movie.

    Mmmmm it's a shame this is bad but I may just watch it anyway because Ana De Armas is the most attractive woman on the earth.

      That’s the only reason I watch it LOL 😂 to see Ana De Armas. Didn’t see the entire film from start to finished, but just wanted see it because it has Ana De Armas.

      That's pretty much all this movie has going for it. She carries the movie.

    This movie was hilarious, lots of dark humor, they all look like they had a blast filming this. Anyways, this would be a run of the mill european, korean movie, but since its made in the US with Affleck, it gets demolished.

    1. I hate "film critics". We're all just people. You don't have super powers. It's a movie.
    2. I enjoyed this movie and came to CZcams to see what other people were saying about it and I stumbled upon this.
    3. I don't make movies. I couldn't have made a better movie. I believe that that the main characters did a good enough job to grab my attention. I was curious. There was suspense. I don't regret watching it. It was a good way to waste a Sunday night on the couch with my wife.
    4. I hate movies without endings. I want to know what happens next. I don't want to have to imagine. I can imagine an infinite number of things all day for the rest of life. I believe the purpose of movies is to tell a story and I want to know the whole story. What happens next? I hate it so much. People think they're so cute or clever not giving you all of the answers. I can't stand it.
    5. All of these are my personao opinions. Obciously. Everyone has their opinion. Their tastes.

    I think the main motivation for making this movie is just a business aspect, streaming services are desperate to appeal the former cable watchers = boomers and stay at home moms nearing 50, they're the ones that keep paying for the service and they love this kinda stuff, shows like s*x/life, all the 50 shades clones and even outlander, plot driven soft pron. Imo the premise it's pretty dated and kinda mehh, people today wouldn't even think of having that type of arrangement, a bit irrelevant. There was some terrible acting in there, but the main actors were good, Ana de Armas can't sing though

    I'm with you almost 100%. That being said, I believe a critic has the responsability to try to be as objective as possible (as we are trusting them with their knowledge in movies) in their opinion about a movie they reviewing. They have to have a criteria to do that and explain how and why they thought that about and liked the movie. So when you read a review that ends declaring the movie is not good just because the reviewer felt uncomfortable with a personal issue, like a movie element that clashes with his/her own values (I have in mind IGN's review of Licorice Pizza by Tara Benett), I feel the review loses the objectivity it's meant to have and is no different from the layman's opinion in the comment section.
    Same goes for video game reviews (GTA V's Gamespot review by Carolyn Petit comes into mind) or any other review of a media or art work.
