How a Sovereign Group in Jamaica Is Fighting a US Mining Company

  • Jamaica was once the world’s leading exporter of bauxite, which is the ore from which aluminum is made, but decades of mining have taken a toll on the land and the people. With reserves depleted, the government is now pushing to move mining operations into the most ecologically sensitive part of the island known as Cockpit Country. The people of Cockpit Country fought off the British in the 1700s and now they're conjuring the warrior spirit of their ancestors to take that fight to the mining companies.

American imperialism and political interference is part of the reason for mass migration. Democratic Reforms in many of these countries would hurt the cheap manufacturing of goods and resource extraction, so the US makes sure to install corrupt fascist puppets and these places remain dysfunctional. This is all to keep the prices of goods and commodities low for white capitalist countries. However, it seems that globalization could be undoing itself because of the Coronavirus pandemic, climate change, and resurgent nationalism in some developed countries.

People were rightfully pissed. Drilling off the coast would kill costal tourism, which is a massive part of the South Carolina economy. It would taint the sea food in the area, killing two more industries. More jobs would be lost than gained, and the government and oil companies know it. But do they care? Just watched the second video updating this issue and came back to rewatch the first. My favourite part in this one is when Howard Mitchell, whom used to chair the Jamaica Bauxite Institute, explains the unsustainability of bauxite mining and doesn't deny his role in it or the fact that "in its hay day", it seemed to be a very prosperous venture for the island's economy (starts at 30:02). I can only hope the rest of the government will develop the foresight to see that the cons of continuing bauxite will ultimately outweigh the pros - but from the second video, it seems they still have their eyes closed.

And the metals the US Navy throws out. This stuff can easily be recycled and treated to whatever type of aluminum you need to use. Any sane "independent" government would question why they aren't mining their own natural resources.
It's stuff like this that make it difficult to cover the fact that Jamaica is ruled by England (and being strangled by America).
Jamaica is still under colonial rule, yet most natives think it's independent. As far as Jamaican/England law is concerned, all Jamaican minerals and natural resources are owned by the Crown.
