    Love this video, and I totally agree that we're very cuber-centric as a community. Look at the whole Redbull controversy; people (including myself at a certain point) were so against something that was meant to make cubing more accessible. The WCA is great for cubers, but Redbull is meant for the general public. We need to find a balance; some way to make WCA Worlds as hype and inviting as Redbull while still being comfortable for cubers.

      Great connection with the whole Redbull stuff. There are certainly plenty of different directions to go with the topic and MANY potential solutions. I can see Redbull being a great way to spread our hobby, they specialize in promoting and explaining niche sports and cubing has been long overdue as something they are involved with. We shouldn't push them away solely based on connections with Rubiks.

    This was a super interesting video! It brought my attention to a lot of things I hadn't really thought about before! I was actually inspired so much that I'm making a new series of videos where I show off puzzles assuming that people don't know anything about them, so I'm hoping that I can contribute to pioneering the vision of spreading the cubing knowledge to other audiences!

    There aren't a lot of communicators, but partly because it's a separate skill to develop. I have been cubing for a long time (since the 80's) but I'm not particularly fast because there was a long period of time between 1987 and 1998 where speedcubing wasn't really a thing visible to the public at large. I kept cubing, but I wasn't improving because there wasn't much reason to. It was hard to get or develop new information, and I couldn't collaborate with anyone because there wasn't anyone else I knew that cubed. As a result, all of my cubing revolved around communicating my hobby in the state that it was at the time. For all I knew at the time cubing was a dead fad and I was stupidly still doing it, but it was fun to show someone the concepts while waiting in line for something or at a restaurant at dinnertime. I really have enjoyed how cubing has improved over the last 18 years, and turned into something bigger than it was before, and I have incorporated parts of that into what I do when I talk to people about cubing. As a result, I'm not very fast, but talking to people while I solve doesn't slow me down much. A lot of the young cubers newly in the hobby also probably aren't that comfortable talking with random people out in the real world, which was something that I knew that I intentionally needed to work on when I started intentionally bringing a cube out with me everywhere.

      Very interesting, thanks for sharing. I've always noticed cubers being hesitant to cube in public either because they feel it is disingenuous, awkward, or attracting unwanted attention, yet I have definitely had some meaningful discussions with people just by having my cube out when I'm in public. I guess in the way that you explained, we can each become representatives of the hobby and spread it more effectively by being willing to answer questions from genuinely curious people.

      TheRubiksCubed Sometimes I purposely lock up so people don’t say “WOOOOAHHHHH HE SOLVED IT”, and just act like normal, but I still do a solve. One time, I started doing a solve but then realized I should use cstimer, so I quickly solved it and started scrambling and played it off as starting the scramble because non-twisty puzzlers don’t realize the difference between solving a cube first to execute a scramble and actually doing a solve (to show about solving).

    This is very well explained and I agree with the points you have made. It's important to continue to make cubing accessable to new cubers so that we can maintain our vibrant community.

    Here's the thing. The community has been growing at fairly solid rate since 2003ish. Except for the hype in the 80's and the die down after, growth has not done anything major since. Now lets picture this, 1/5 cubers are more open and easy going about getting new people in the hobby, and 1/3 of news articals start portaying cubing how it is. This would shock the growth so much and new competetors could double. What does this mean? Larger, more often comps. Wayy more newer people into the hobby and a flood of people who can't have more advanced topics, meaning that CF would go to the trash even more (Okay I haven't been on fb in over 6 months so I have no idea it hasn't already) and the little bit of productive stuff would be soon cut out of speedsolving and r/cubers would be worse than rcs is atm. Think about the sudden change in supply and demand for harware. SCS and The Cubicle are prolly the biggest retail stores, but if you think about it they have a relativily small team. This would pretty much have to be doubled and that would be twice as hard to find people if you need people of great cubing skill (although to be fare, lots of non cubers could be even more qualifyed) This growth would either literally change the world, or change the community into a toilet. Now, sure, most of them would eventually learn how to not be idiots, and the community can currently deal pretty well with accepting all people and realizing when you're not annoying anymore, but if too many people found out about it the whole general internet would go on to it and it would become like a super hipster/nerd thing and be sold in sudoku shops. Now, unless you think the community could survive that, even if it is not twice as many people it is bound to be way more than the average growth, it is not a good idea to suddenly start this. (Just to make things clear, I am more on your side about this, I just want everyone to hear both sides of the argument, as my concern is legit, unless you gradually pulled it off)

    • @TheRubiksCubed
      @TheRubiksCubed  Před 5 lety

      You make a good point, immediate growth would make things difficult, but I disagree that it is a negative. First of all that is a HUGE if. I do not think it's possible to experience growth so fast in the way you are saying. To address the difficulties of growth, I do think a lot of them are even negatives. Would it put strain on retailers? Yes, but that would create more cubing jobs and more pressure on the market for better products and services. Your point on cf I don't think is accurate because groups like that, unless incredibly selective, have half-lives as it is. They die on their own, even without incredible community growth. Not to mention that "ruining cf" is incredibly subjective. The other point about flooding the community with beginners I think is gate keeping. More beginners won't tear your friend groups apart or anything; cubing as we know it won't change. This is the attitude too many people have now in my opinion, we like cubing how it is and we're nervous that an influx of new people will ruin it. Obviously not an isolated issue in cubing either when you look at the bigger scheme of things like immigration policy in the US. It's not us vs. them you know. But thanks for playing devil's advocate, definitely some stuff to think about.

    i started learning as a junior in high school because my friend was able to solve it (and also i saw it as a way to entertain myself on the go). But i do agree that many people are often intimidated by the stigma attached to cubing as "super intelligent" or "math genius" when of course its not at all.

    A couple months ago I was told it was strange to just know all my records and world records off by heart then I turned to the person next to me (who really liked swimming) and asked them what their best time for freestyle 100M was. without hesitation the answered. I looked back at the first person and they had realised their mistake. I think one way we could help this cause is by comparing smaller aspects of cubing to other sports to show its not that different. I really love the idea and I had never thought about it before.

    • @TheRubiksCubed
      @TheRubiksCubed  Před 5 lety

      That is an excellent example, and I will try to use that if a situation like that arises. Could help dispel misconceptions related to cubing being intelligence based or cubers being overly eccentric.

    Definitely expand twisty puzzling so that we don’t have these (annoying) non-twisty puzzlers walking around. Like “Is ThAt A rUbIx TrIaNgLe??!!??!??” It’s much better to actually be twisty puzzler than that. Also, I’m not trying to be mean or anything.
