I just find that kind of logic so ridiculous towards Messi. Why should a team achievement determine if he's the greatest or not? It makes no sense, considering a player doesn't win a world cup alone. You can point to any world cup where even the likes of R9, Maradona, Zidane, Pele, etc had others step up in games they didn't contribute. Therefore, they would not have won the trophy either, had that not happened.
Lots of players win world cups, yet the true marker of greatness is playing to the level Messi has over his career, and everything he's achieved while doing that. The fact he's 35 and is still a great dribbler, playmaker and scores many goals through his own play underlines his greatness. He's demonstrated that at this world cup, so win or lose, he deserves huge credit for the way he's played.

But it's still a whole 10 other players who made that team win anything - not just one guy. The fact is that Messi/Ronaldo are goats DESPITE not winning a UCL or WC - trophies are the goal of all players but it's the other 10 who all helped you get there. You can be the greatest and not win a WC. Cruyff didn't but is considered one of the all time goats.

I hope for the sake of football that they don't win. They are the most ugly and despicable team to watch at this tournament. Their behaviour, fouls, fighting and treatment of the Netherlands in that last games sums up the Argentine way. They've always played like that and that's why I can never respect them. Of course the media completely ignores this because it doesn't fit their narrative of it being Messi's moment. The bias this tournament to him has been disgusting. They lost to Saudi Arabia, barely beat Australia and won on the toss of a coin against the Netherlands. They are really not a good team at all. If they are to win, then they have to go down as one of the weakest WC winners ever.

The absurdity of this requirement of needing to win a world cup to be considered the greatest is shown exactly now. If Messi wins 2 games, does that then make him a better player next week than he is today? Exactly, It makes no sense.
Like I said in one of my other comments, if you think he's the greatest, he's already the greatest. Those who don't think he's the greatest most likely won't be changing their minds even if he wins this world cup, because if they haven't changed their minds at this point, will it really be changed in a week's time. I hear what you're saying, but the best players in any sport show up on the biggest stages, at the biggest moments. We already know Leo Messi is one of the greatest players of all time. However, his title as GOAT is still very much open to debate. The very scarcity of opportunity that the World Cup provides is part of what makes it so compelling, as it is unequivocally the BIGGEST stage in all of football. If Messi were to actually be able to win it, his case for being the one and only GOAT would become almost bulletproof.

To be honest i only saw Messi play a few times. I saw him in a game for club and was impressed. I saw him at the world cup multiple times but felt underwhelmed. I personally think Maradona is better, don't force opinions on people.

Comparing players of different generations is always an impossible task. I always felt Messi was best Argentine player in history, without seeing full videos of Maradona playing. But Maradona had special talent with the ball, similar to Messi. And a large portion of people would say Maradona is greatest of all time. Some say Pele for winning multiple world cups, some would say Cristiano for longevity/stats/influence etc. It will always be an endless debate as new players will emerge and quite likely eclipse what Messi and Cristiano have done to set the bar so high. Mbappe is near winning 2nd World cup, at such a young age, contributing many goals in both tournaments, has more goals than the other 2 mentioned at the same age, so how do you measure what is considered the greatest of all time? you can't, you can only give "your" opinion on who you believe is the best or like the best. Messi is for me the best player (playmaking, ball control, accuracy) naturally gifted, but for me Cristiano has a broader legacy, "greatness", for achieving all he has competing with Messi for 15+ years, beating him out to golden boots, la liga titles, champions leagues, with arguably a weaker side for many years, and his international trophies (Euro 2016, Nations League) . But definitely Messi is more talented.

And this reinforces the point I was making, where everyone can have their preference/bias. Whereas you say he wasn't the best player for Portugal during the Euro, it can be debated (Pepe was solid, Rui Patricio was great, Quaresma was decent etc) but a big portion of the sport community will look at CR7s contribution and see the importance it had. 2 nice goals vs hungary to get them to the knockout round, an assist to Nani vs Iceland I believe, a rocket header vs Wales and a shot/assist to Nani to book their spot in the final. That is why I say he cemented his legacy on every team he played for, and captained portugal to their first major trophy. It wasn't the most aesthetically pleasing, but it was effective. Messi plays with finesse, Ronaldo relies on athleticism (jumping headers/burst of acceleration/laced power shots etc). If Messi is considered the best footballer (natural talent), what does it speak of CR7 (a trained product) competing for near 2 decades at the highest stage? That is why for me, Messi is best naturally talented footballer I have seen, but CR7 for me will have a greater legacy/impact in the history books. 2 living legends

The way the game is viewed has changed. The world cup argument is becoming an outdated concept. It used to hold more importance in determining the greatest because it was the only real football that was shown worldwide at the time of Pele and Maradona. The respective top leagues and the European cup aka the CL was not followed by a worldwide viewing audience like it is now. Club football now holds even more importance, which is why people recognise Messi's greatness has been proven over what he's shown and achieved as a player throughout his career. Lots of players have won world cups, yet very few have played to the level Messi has, let alone have done that for 15 years. That's why some huge names in football believe Messi is the greatest. Needless to say, they are well qualified to judge.
