  • For this A Song of Ice & Fire battle report, we feature the top-table game of a recent local tournament in the Dallas, TX area. The game is played at New World Gaming, by Daniel and Neil from the Dallas, Texas ASOIAF community. The game mode being played is Here We Stand. Daniel is playing a Stannis One True King list, and Neil is playing a Mance Rayder list. Due to the game mode being Here We Stand, I have included the players' deployment phase in the video. Normally, I exclude this part. In Here We Stand, it is important to know which units are in which quadrants of the battlefield. Thanks for stopping by, and enjoy the show!

That was a grind! As the Baratheon I would’ve probably run the Champions into the FF corner, mainly because that Chariot just needs to die on principle lol. But as discussed above, it would have left the home quadrant open for an NCU drop or Endless Horde deployment.
Side note, glad to hear your Vic list continues to do well!

Just Free Folk doing Free Folk things.🙄 No hate on the player, 100% hate on the faction

Hidden traps - when you take more wounds doing your turn action than from ff unit attack. ~Just FF things

The Baratheon player would've been better served by refusing a flank and attacking the Wildings with his Champions. That would mean abandoning one of his home quarters, but he would still be able to score two quarters by knocking the Wildings out of one of there's. Focus on the units that surrender VPs, and use the Champions' armor to absorb trap hits and other nonsense.

Trying to focus down one of the VP-granting units with the Champs is a solid idea. It risks an incursion of the home quadrant by a FF unit and orbital NCU strike to steal away the quadrant though. Only a Lightbringer was there to contest.

The baratheon player was, honestly, fucked. THe FF players has to fuck up repeatedly to give the baretheon player any chance at all.

It’s definitely a steep hill to climb when FF has Endless Horde to give them 8pts worth of additional units to capture quadrants. Like I mentioned in the closing commentary, having so many cheap activations allows FF to spread their points out across the quadrants without wasting as many points in a single quadrant as an army with fewer, high act units.

It's definitely an uphill struggle against Free Folk, but in some game modes I find it best to punch them in the face and try to destroy units quickly. In a certain sense a low-activation army can be an *advantage*, as it lets you throw a lot of combat power at the enemy at the start of the round, destroying units and leaving the rest out of position.

Yeah this is definitely a battle that I’d like to see a few different iterations of. A highly aggressive Baratheon response would have potentially been a very different game. Conversely, a super aggro FF strategy (versus a stand-off and “wait and see” strategy) could have been interesting to see. The circumstances for this game likely lent themselves to the strategies both players pursued: it was the top table match of a loooong day of gaming. Neither player wanted to take any huge risks, and both were already mentally exhausted from 8-9 hours of ASOIAF. Add to that neither player had experience with Here We Stand.

Can’t quite run the FF list anymore after points updates. Would have to swap a Chariot for Varamyr’s wolf pack, which is still decent. 9 activations is mind blowing to me

WHERE PATCH?!?!? PD: Great report, even tho you get FF'ed

The $1M question is, how would your Greyjoys have stood up to the FF in this game mode? Go hyper-aggressive? Or try to weather the storm and hope to heal through the Hidden Traps and chariot charges?

@@imperialminis857 Gj can reach 9 acts, with 2-3 bowmen you can force them to come or get shot to death. You need to kill charriots and Varamyr ASAP and play with terrain and Hope for the best 🤣😅

I wouldn’t mind if they totally overhauled this game mode (again) to the point where it became totally unrecognizable. At the very least, I agree that the NCU part of it is unnecessary. Though I’d also remove the NCU mission switching ability from DwDw. I think the shared missions getting swapped out every round makes it interesting enough when compared to the other modes.
The game already has enough moving pieces between NCUs, Cards, and units, producing enough player fatigue, that the modes don’t need to add much more complexity imo.
