I asked, you answered...and I try to listen :) Of all the requests for new content on the channel one of the most frequently asked for videos is a series on the Terasic DE-10 Nano MiSTer FPGA hardware...so here it is! Retro gaming goodness.
On this episode of our MiSTer series we are going to be talking why you need a MiSTer FPGA in your gaming library in 2024, the price to build a basic MiSTer FPGA setup, showcasing some of the hardware that runs on FPGA cores (PS1, NES, Super Nintendo, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Sega 32X, Sega Saturn, Neo Geo, Neo Geo CD, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Color, Gameboy...and all the arcade pcb FPGA cores...not even mentioning all the great computer FPGA cores like Amiga and Sharp X68000 and N64) and what hardware you need to get started with the MiSTer FPGA ecosystem including analog video and CRT televisions!
Just trust me...if you are on the fence about buying and building a MiSTer FPGA...just do it!
and if you are here to say 'but software emulation exists'...I know...and I love that too but still

So happy I got my MiSTer setup 5 years ago when it was still pretty cheap. That said, I wouldn't hesitate buying it at today's prices if I had to.
Yes for what it does it should be considered a steal
well you at least had to upgrade your SDRAM to the 2.9 revision to have the Saturn core working ....😋
Support on 2.5 modules is a lot better now
@@chryoko I have not had any issues with the Saturn core so far (I have the 2.5 SDRAM revision), but I've only tried a 1/2 dozen games so far.
I was thinking about upgrading from v2.5 to v3.0, but is it possible that saturn games will be more compatible with v2.5?
I bought a MiSTer 3 years ago after I started looking into RGB modding my original consoles and getting ROM carts and seeing how expensive it was going to be. The MiSTer is a great deal and it's been my primary gaming device ever since. I've gotten to play a lot of classics I missed growing up. Software emulation never felt right to me.
Yes it eliminates all the need to mod all your consoles and acquire flash carts or ODEs
I built one a few months ago so it wasn't exactly cheap, but it was still soooo worth it. It might even be my favourite tech purchase ever.
It’s seriously insane how much it does
I’m with you on that one. I love my pc but honestly I think my mister gets way more play time. The investment has been incredible with each of the cores that have been released on it. The CPS 1 and 2 cores then the cave shooters on top of all the consoles. It a project that just keeps blowing my mind with out blowing my wallet.
Every new core makes the investment that much better too. New core vid today at 4 cst too
Wow, you're a game thief. Congrats.
🤣 have you even seen my collection in my videos. Yeah. Big thief
Thanks for your continued coverage of MiSTer. After getting one many years ago, I still use your videos to show new friends how awesome it is and how it continues to get better. I appreciate updated recaps like this every time you do them.
Hope your holidays went well!
Holidays went great. Hope your went well too!
Not only can original hardware be expensive when you factor in getting quality connection cables, original controllers, power supplies, accessories, modifications and paying a tech to maintain or restore your consoles to working condition, they were also not necessarily made to last over such long time periods. After all, these devices are consumer electronics specifically made to the lowest possible and most affordable price points up to about 40 years ago, where as the DE-10 nano, as far as I understand, is made with industrial applications in mind, being made to be both very robust and able to withstand high temperatures without active cooling requirements.
Even back when these consoles where new I still remember friends having issues with their PS1 disc lasers failing, or a PS2 eating a disc and not wanting to open the disc drive anymore, or other hardware failures requiring repairs or even entire console replacements.
It also becomes even more costly if you want to play both PAL and NTSC region games and wanting them to run at their correct clock frequency, which would only be possible by owning and playing the PAL and NTSC games on their same region consoles, with space then also becoming a concern if you want to own a wider range of various consoles.
As time goes on I hope that more people will come to understand the tremendous value of FPGA emulation, as we will eventually reach a point where original consoles might not be readily available in working condition anymore, where devices such as the Mister and the Analogue products do an amazing job at faithfully preserving a range of various different console and arcade systems while adding additional features and much extended flexibility.
Yes this is as important on the preservation side as it is the fun and saving money side. Best of both worlds
Lol. Dude. That's a long-winded way of saying "I steal video games, and will never own the originals".
Plenty of us own the originals. I’m surrounded by them
@@gamesandplanes3984copying isn't theft :)
MiSTer is the only way to go these days. It is the absolute best in terms of cost, convenience, and capabilities. My only gripe as a newcomer to the FPGA world is I wish the UI/UX was better. Looking forward to the MARS for that reason. I think it will be what makes FPGA gaming truly mainstream. But my MiSTer will always have a place in my house!
I don’t mind the UI being basic. Keeps me from feeling compelled to add art and makes me just play. But that’s me
@@VideoGameEsoterica yeah totally get that!
I hate missing art but I also hate spending my time on fixing it. MiSTer solves that 😂
@@VideoGameEsoterica yeah not a problem if you just can't do it 😂
Haha exactly. Take the option away from me saves me time
Best gaming purchase I’ve made in a very long time…love how I can just connect it onto any modern display and it looks fantastic and then when the mood takes easily hook it up to one of my vintage consumer CRTs for the authentic experience
Yes it’s extremely versatile in regards to how it can be used
@@VideoGameEsoterica for someone who just wants to experience all the games and isn’t as hardcore like us needing all the OG hardware it’s the perfect solution
I find myself using my real hardware much less in the last three years because of MiSTer
Delighted to have my MiSTer. 2 other great features.
Controller accessibility, if its got USB 99% will work. Dualsense for SNES? M30 for N64, whatever you like or need for comfort.
Also region handling, can get RGB SCART output onto EU TV and play every NTSC console no problem.
Yes the versatility of being able to do basically whatever you want, however you want is gold
Nice I think this is the video I was looking for
👍
Bought one last year because of your videos. Have one hooked up to a CRT via component. The ultimate retro gaming machine! Now I just have to find a 2nd CRT for all the TaTe arcade cores.
Careful. You’ll end up with a room filled with CRTs like I have
@@VideoGameEsoterica That's the plan!
Haha just be careful of your back. Team lift!
There are possible polyphony issues with sound effects in Starfox 64 (ring acquisition sound effect) and Mario Kart 64 (invincibility sound effect). I'm testing my real N64 against a friend's MiSTer. Despite that, the MiSTer is VERY impressive! The way textures render seems to be 1:1 from what I can tell. I'll be getting one for sure. Thanks for the channel updates with this device!!
Happy to do the updates. I’m sure bug fixing to the issues you mention will be forthcoming in 2024 too
Lol. You're so silly. Wondering about polyphonic effects, when you should actually be worried about being a thief and criminal.
Super cool projection!@@gamesandplanes3984
I love my Mister. I had a stack system and later upgraded to the Mister multisystem from Haber. The development of Saturn, PSX and N64 cores have taken this way past what I wanted from the system. My original reason for the mister was for the SNES and Amiga cores, now I have NeoGeo, pc engine, nes, sega cd and 32x. All systems I wanted as a kid but could never afford. As you said in your video though that is just scratching the surface.
Yes the list of cores available is stupid deep and just keeps growing months after month
I have had an analog version of the Mister for a few years now, but I have only ever had to use the HDMI out. I should have just went with digital from the beginning as now I want to upgrade to dual ram to future proof my Mister and if I did it from the start I would have saved a few bucks.
The good thing is the IO boards aren’t too bad of a price and you can grab one from MiSTerAddons and swap them easily
My misterfpga, three years now, I play it almost everyday on my 21' trinitron. Best purchase in gaming ever!
21 foot eh? Lol
I've had a MiSTer for about 5 years but have barely had time to use it. I need to rethink my work-life balance.
It happens to the best of us. My shame pile is huge
I love my mister because I don't really need to fiddle with it. Emulators exist and retroarch is awesome but it still requires a ton of constant fiddling and if you want to output a modern computer to a CRT, that's a whole other can of worms. With Mister, once the initial set up is done all you need to do it run update all every week or so and enjoy. It's also a breeze to run into a CRT, just grab the right cable, toggle a few settings and your set.
It's not free but your getting 99.99% of the original hardware experience for a fraction of the cost of original hardware. Heck, if you don't spend the money to mod your original hardware then the mister is probably going to be delivering a better visual experience because most consoles use composite output to a CRT.
Yes the “fiddle factor” is diminished on MiSTer. And I use a metric TON of software emulators / do videos on them. 10x the questions on those videos then MiSTer setup vids
What do you mean that you have to do an update weekly? I just want something I can set up once and leave it.
You push a button. It does the rest. It’s no diff than any console or system ever. RetroArch? Update weekly. PS5? Updates near weekly. It’s just “press update and wait five min”
Lol. Yeah, ok, you dirty thief.
The best bang for your buck is a second hand Wii ($30), easy software jailbreak and gets you about 80% of what MiSTer does.
Wii’s are cheap as dirt
maybe the wii-u is even a better buy as it has a built in HDMi output already ?
I wonder how much those are going for now
And the Wii has a 15khz output for emulators!
Not really. ☮️
Going on 5 years with my MiSTer. With MARS coming, I may turn my Mister into a more computer centric platform to work with my VGA monitor.
First mars needs to release and second they need all cores ported. That will take a minute
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yes, the cores bit is a significant thing and for a lot of us, the cores we have are plenty good. They'd likely need to have cores to cover more recent consoles to justify people upgrading from what they've got.
Yes. It remains to be seen
The MiSTer is without a doubt one of the best electronic things I have bought in my life. I bought half a year ago and it is absolutely fantastic and worth every cent. I have it hooked up to my 83 inch OLED and it looks stunning. I am a person who also cares a great deal about audio quality so I use the SPDIF output on my MiSTER and got it connected to my Technics SACD player which also has an SPDIF input. The internal DAC is truly amazing and the sound coming out of the MiSTer is perfect. I think video is just as important as audio.
It def keeps delivering over and over again day in and day out
Mine is out for delivery today, exciting stuff...
Oh wow perfect timing
@@VideoGameEsoterica getting and setting up a MiSTer seemed like the sort of new year's resolution that I could actually keep.
The best kind of resolution…more fun!
Would love to see a video on the RetroTink 4k in use with the MiSTer, your videos are brilliant! Hope you have a great 2024

I was ready to buy an N64 right before Robert announced his plans for the core. Very glad I didn't. Get a MiSTer. Save the original hardware for the collectors/preservation.

I’m building my fourth one this year. however, since I bought my Mr. with games preloaded on an sd chip, I want to learn how to program the Mr. and load games from my library and from developers as well. I have the GunCom 3 but currently my new 55” QLED is too thin for the sensors so I have to figure something out. Also need to remount the sensor bars for the Wii and Wii U. Also, the the mount I had for my Xbox 360 camera and PS3 camera won’t fit on this TV. Only thing that wants to sit up there is the PlayStation 4 camera.
I use command Velcro hooks myself
I have 2 misters (got the first one before the boom so around $100) and I plan to get a Mars when it becomes available. FPGA baby!
It’ll be interesting to see what happens with MARS in 2024
After seeing your retrotink 4k review I’m pondering building a second mister with analog output
You can just use direct video out of the HDMI port. I’ll have a video on it soon

Is there a full set up available for purchase that includes games? Or at least a preconfigured card that you can just drop games onto?
Not that I am aware of. No reputable builder of MiSTer would send a populated card out as that could lead to issues
If they worked with retroachievements, Id get one. Thats a fun community over there, seeing whos playing obscure old stuff alongside you.
I’ve heard people really get into that. I haven’t tried it myself
Can you use a lightgun with a vga monitor via mister?
Also what are the savestates like? I'm told they're quite limited in number but that was a year or so ago and I'll need loads for playing shmups
You can use a vga monitor if you like double to 31kHz but some light guns may still get a little angry about it in my experience. Save states are generally NOT in cores. A few have them
You did forget the shopping links for the DE-10 Nano by the way XD
It’s in there. MiSTerAddons. He has DE10s ready to go and they aren’t in Taiwan
Big Mister over here trying to get us to buy more Misters.
Don't mind if I do.
Terasic should really have me on the payroll
If my DE10 died right now I would IMMEDIATELY order a new one. There is no question.
I'm sure this will sound incredibly noobish, but in order to play the retro games on a MiSTer, do you just have to find the "roms" or can you collect the actual physical copies of games? I've recently gotten a RetroUSB AVS and started collecting NES carts. I'd love to get into Genesis/32x/Sega CD, and SNES, but part of what I'm loving is finding the real carts. Thanks for looking!
You don’t use physical games, just files
@@VideoGameEsoterica thanks for the super quick response! I did want an Everdrive as well, but by the time I’d get a Genesis, SNES and Everdrives, I’d be over the price of a MiSTer. I think one of these is in my near future 👍🏻
Def get into MiSTer. So worth it
I had a mister since 2018 and for console cores it's great. However, for a while I have been unhappy with a lot of the classic arcade cores. I know defender and Robotron cores are poor because I have the original boards and the Williams jrok boards. For Christmas I got a bitkit 2 which concentrates on classic arcade games accurately. It's excellent and something you may want to do a review on?
I’ll look into it
How do they differ from real arcades? Honest question, I plead ignorance here.
Ease of use is higher on MiSTer. Keeping boards and superguns around to run arcade game boards is cumbersome and annoying. Trust me…I’d know. Gets you playing quicker with no setup on MiSTer. Accuracy is very close to real boards if not 1:1 on some cores
@@VideoGameEsoterica I can only speak from my own experience using original hardware and other FPGA solutions but defender, robotron2084 and galaxian are bloody awful on mister. The sound is wrong, there is latency and the gameplay isn't correct. They are no better than mame .
Those are def ones I haven’t checked at all
I'm just glad the price is going to plummet with competition hitting the market
The DE10 won’t change in price
I didn’t realize how much the price has gone up for the DE10. I think I got mine for around $150 back in 2019/2020
Inflation is a killer
If I had a RGB capable monitor I would totally get a mister. As it stands, the analogue pocket on the dock is scratching my FPGA itch for now.
It’s a bummer Pocket can’t handle the PS1/Saturn/N64 stuff
@@VideoGameEsoterica I’m not a big ps1/n64 guy so that’s fine. I love Saturn though but for that I already own a Saturn with a satiator so I’m good for now.

just put a triple stack together and i love it but i'm tempted to assemble some single board builds for hdmi only but also considering Raspberry pi5 with retropie or Mister clones cuz the base board is still $225 bucks. Has anyone tried any mister clones?

Too much IMO. I can’t play from OBS personally
I’ve debated on getting a second mister, I have the analogue single ram one. Do you think my second one should be digital dual ram version? Or another analogue
Around 3 years ago I bought the analog version and only ever use HDMI. If I know then what I know now I just would have went digital with dual ram. Now I am planning on converting to dual ram. If you are only ever going to use HDMI I would say go dual ram as it's going to be more and more necessary for some of the upcoming cores.
Either would be great but May as well do dual ram
Plus you can do direct video out if you need too as well
I think I’ll go digital dual ram this time. I do use my analog out when I want to play on a CRT but if I want to do that I can just use my analog mister, plus it sounds like the dual ram may be utilized more in the future although right now it’s not fully needed yet, thanks for the tips
Yeah I’d def go dual for a second build

I've tried several emulation setups (Pi, Odroid, Pandora's Boxes and MAME PC's) and nothing compares to Mister for retro gaming. Best bit of tech I've ever bought!
I agree :) obv
Nah, a PC with a proper emulation setup is way superior to any Pandora, Pi and android setup. These are all the bottom of the barrel of software emulation.
Debating a PS5 for a few new games, or a MiSTer for _thousands of games instantly_
I will say my PS5 is mostly collecting dust these days
Na - used an old laptop and emulation and it did all this for a fraction of the cost.
While it is absolutely correct that the Mister is cheap compared to RGB modded original hardware, it should also be said that software emulation (e.g. via a raspberryPi) is the cheapest and still a very good way of playing old games. Yes, if you are an enthusiast and want to have the best experience, surely the Mister is the way to go, but for the sake of giving a complete and transparent picture, this point should not go unnoticed.
Maybe not relevant for the enthusiast subscribers of this channel, but in case for somebody new doing his research and watching the vid ;-)

I love my De10-Nano. It's a shame to live in an almost communist country like Brazil. To buy it now we have to pay up to 60% of the price + shipping. Very expensive, and almost impossible for those earning minimum wage.
I’ve heard from a lot of Brazilian commenters about how bad it is. Almost cheaper to fly somewhere and bring it home
There are no 64 megabyte Neo Geo games. They are megabits which 1/8 of a megabyte. All old consoles measures carts in megabits.

AND I was looking for an honest unbiased review of a product I want to buy. Not a shameless shill. At least I know to avoid your channel now
Yes please do avoid my channel. I’d appreciate it 😉
$500 fucking dollars.
Well you don’t need to earn the $500 that way but it’s always an option
I wonder if this guy is somehow sponsored by MiSTer? Not one price comparison to PC emulation. I have been emulated ROMS since the late 90s on my Athlon 600-1.4 system and emulation on modern powerful (non ARM) cores is even more impresive. Someone who is tech savvy should NEVER have to spend a dollar on emulation unless if they want a plug and play sytem ready to go with minimal effort. Word of advice- the WWW and torrent software are your friend and ARM rocks for Chromebooks...
MiSTer isn’t a company and I show plenty of software emulation on the channel. Price comparison…$450 to zero
I'm holding out for the Mars
I wouldn’t pass MiSTer but that’s me. Mars is still mostly unproven
MiSTer is my stop. N64 is my nostalgia limit and desires and anything newer than that is meh to me. Once Robert Peip developed the N64 core, buying a MiSTer was a done deal.
DC with ODE on Tink 4K was so good I don’t think I’d need anything else. But I’ll still take it lol
should look out for the arcade replay 2 instead of mars
That is an interesting concept too
Very expensive elitist emulator, lacking lots of quality of life things of software emulators... But I'm kind of an elitist in this kind of things, for now I will stick to real hardware and software emulation, but I will keep watching the development of hardware emulation
It really isn’t elitist. It’s a diff way to accomplish something. Just more money
I’ve been broke before too. Just budget better and you’ll be alright.
Not to rain on your fpga purist retro parade, but failing to mention that you can download retro arch on your android smartphone for free is a marketing gimmick if you can even tell the difference between that and real hardware.
Lol what?
This guy sold out.
To who? And when do I get paid? Cause the check hasn’t come in yet 🤣
@@VideoGameEsotericaLol, Ok.
