    On the subject of Earthworm Jim, as a 26 year veteran of the series, Genesis does what nintendon't. The visuals are very similar, it's the sound where it really shines on Sega. It's got that gritty, metallic Genesis sound that makes the music hit different.

  • @Drinkabeerandplayagameofficial

      I have friends who think this is great too. I think it comes down to them being uncomfortable with emulation based handhelds and see the Evercade with its cartridges as a great way to play some of these old games, not realising that it is in fact using emulation to play them.

      Yes guys, retro ROMs can be found freely on the internet and played pretty much for free, but I like the fact we can buy physical licences games and the way they have made it simple for anyone to play them. It certainly also appeals to gamers to like to collect games. Evercade isn't perfect, by far, but it's cheap and accessible. My worst complaint is the lack of proper scaling options and no custom button-mappings (not yet anyway). I would also love a sleep-mode since that would be more practical on the go.

    • @MaaZeus
      @MaaZeus Před 4 lety +1

      @@99Vood99 Maybe, but every portable clone system that I am aware of (those that come with pirated roms atleast) screw up in one of the most important things, the sound. Sound emulation is horrendous, sometimes even missing whole channels. Considering how important music is for these old classics this is a major oversight that somehow gets copied from different clone system to clone system. This probably means they are all based on same chipset that was flawed from day 1.

  • @BrunoFonsecaPT
    @BrunoFonsecaPT Před 4 lety +12

    I think this device is being misunderstood. It was built on a budget (hence the 16:9 non IPS screen), for people that still appreciate having their games in physical format on a shelve. The D-Pad is much better than it has any right to be at price point and it’s very satisfying having to insert and remove the cartridge from the unit. I feel they could have spent some time fine tuning the control mapping and a few other minor bugs to avoid the bad press, but I guess that can all be fixed with patching nowadays. The experience using this device is significantly different from a Roms Chinese handheld, and that may not be relevant for a lot of people, but if you’re a retro gamer that still has fond memories of blowing into your cartridges, you will appreciate what they are trying to do here. Is it perfect? No, and if you think it should be at this price point, you’re just out of touch with reality, but it’s still great fun. Fingers crossed they continue to patch and improve this unit.

    • @BlUsKrEEm
      @BlUsKrEEm Před 4 lety +3

      I love my unit. I am a little sad to see these comments, but even if the system fails it's already in my top 3 handhelds with the library as it stands.

    • @gluttonousmaximus9048
      @gluttonousmaximus9048 Před 4 lety

      It really could have benefitted from some natively developed games. What is it, a Cortex-A7 core? Might as well give it a distribution network so that dedicated mobile developers can make somewhat modern games for it. Just to run badly optimized emulators is a waste of its potential.

    • @Openreality
      @Openreality Před 4 lety +2

      Yeah I've seen a mixed reviews for it. The channels I watch regularly all liked it, but there have been just as many channels that I don't follow that often basically land blasted it. I think it'll suit my needs perfectly and I won't have to worry about Nintendo switch anytime soon.

    • @Suedeash
      @Suedeash Před 4 lety +1

      Yeah these comments make me a bit sad, it's essentially a £40 handheld that does its job pretty well and is quite well-built with a Mega Drive style D-pad. It has very real flaws, all of which could have been avoided if it was more expensive, but I've had a blast using it.

  • @obsoleteworlds
    @obsoleteworlds Před 4 lety +17

    Another review that missed the problematic stuttering of some Genesis game music. I really thought you guys would pick up on it. Try listening to the opening music of Tinhead on the Piko cart and you'll hear what I'm talking about. I also heard it during Earthworm Jim, Radical Rex and others. This is in handheld mode.
    I'm glad you at least highlighted the issues with Top Racer which Evercade still seem reluctant to admit is a fault. Unfortunately it's not the only issue with this cart. I found that Drakkhen freezes instead of playing its ending and their are the audio issues mentioned above.
    Another key audio related thing you missed. The device is incompatible with modern 3 channel headphones (the kind with built in mics or volume controls). You will get corrupted or distorted sound if using these so will need to seek out some regular 2 channel headphones.

    The Nintendo Switch Lite has three Konami collections, a Capcom collection, an Atari collection, an SNK collection, a Sega Mega Drive collection, a Namco collection, and it has a very long series of arcade classics by a company called Hamster, not to mention the Sega Ages series. I don't understand why they made the Evercade. There was no need for it. Even the PSP and the 3DS are much better.

      While Joe's Game Sack video was a fair one, people really took his complaint about the audio issues too far, with many even trying to claim that all previous people who made videos on the Evercade were nothing but shills, and that Joe was the only one willing to speak the truth. They even tried calling Digital Foundry's John Linneman a shill, since he was overall positive on the device, which is ridiculous. Sorry Coury, but it's not likely that NES Karnov, or even Atomic Runner Chelnov (since you brought it up, as well) will ever see release on the Evercade, and G-mode doesn't have the rights to those titles. While G-mode got seemingly 95% of Data East's catalog after the bankruptcy, the remaining few went all over the place, and developer Paon wound up getting Karnov, Chelnov, Glory of Heracles, the Kuuga Trilogy of shooters, & (most notably) Windjammers; yeah, G-mode can re-release games with Karnov & Chelnov in them, but don't have the rights to the actual games they star in. Unless Evercade eventually sees a "Paon Collection" for its Data East games, I doubt those will ever appear.

    Bilinear filters are not something people seem to like but in my experience when it comes to arcade or Genesis games it's a must. The reason for this is because the blurring effect of the filter gives the sprites more detail especially in shaded areas.

I also made sure the case I ordered was Spongebob themed because I have GBA Movie Player CF version and I post processed and converted my 2004 Spongebob Movie from my DVD to a GBM/GBS format using GBA Movie Converter 1.50 so a Spongebob Movie on a Spongebob GBA SP is fitting. Also do my eyes deceive me or does the screen look bigger somehow? Although there is 1 complaint about the IPS panel, it looks orange/beige tinted which kind of throws away color accuracy like an orange filter that can possibly be annoying to look at. However the rest is awesome I give the mod 4.5 stars.

    I don't think I've ever heard niche pronounced that way, but interesting and entertaining video none the less. I think I'll wait and see what if anything happens with their arcade plans in 2021 and their potential consolized Evercade.
    I do hope though to see some of the newly translated Namco Famicom games be ripped for Everdrive/Powerpak use like has happened with the recent digital collections on XB1/PS4/NS. There's some overlap with those two digital compilations the Evercade lineup, but several newly translated games like Mappy Kids are exclusive to the Evercade at this time.

      And lastly, Top Gear was actually always Top Racer in Japan on the Super Famicom. What's here is the Japanese rom I suspect, which has some subtle differences like different fuel burn rates for the cars. Would be easy to see in the controller options screen since the Japanese version shows a Super Famicom styled gamepad.
      I suspect the renaming isn't for what this video alludes to though. My money is on Kemco keeping the Top Gear name for videogaming and only selling Top Racer and the three 16-bit classics to Piko while holding onto the rights to the name itself. But then again maybe it does have something to do with the unrelated BBC television show.

    I don't think Top Racer was rebranded because of the british tv show, but because some weird licensing issue with Kemco, who owns the Top Gear monicker (for videogames, at least).
    Also, Top Racer is the game of the game in Japan, and its weird how they removed kemco trademark on the title screen. Can you guys please elabore on that? I'm curious because me (and a lot of brazilians) are big fans of this game.

    Only real complaint I have is that the game boxes don't indicate what version of a particular game you are getting. You don't always expect the NES version of a game and that is more often than not what you get.

    Is it me or have all the reviews been pretty "meh"? From the sound of the reviewers, they are almost reluctant to say it isn't a good system. I'm not saying it isn't a good system, as I don't have one to judge, but I get the gut feeling they really want to say something like "It's good, but not worth $100.00". The screen and emulator issues are what seems to be the biggest issues. Understandably, the creators of this system probably wouldn't of allowed these games to be put on the system if it wasn't fort the emulator on the cartridge, I think that is the system's fatal flaw. Maybe the firmware updates allow extra functions to be read on the cartridge emulators and bypass the issues of the emulator on the cartridge? Hopefully.

    Honestly, these nickel + dime handhelds are getting silly. Splitting up single-digit handfuls of long-dead games with no real work done on them seems incredibly wasteful. A regular handheld (3DS/PSP/Vita) with emulators will run entire consoles' worth of games without extra purchases. Even if you don't want to use emulators, the handhelds have collections that have multiple times the number of games as these collections

    • @YomBouyashaka
      @YomBouyashaka Před 4 lety +1

      @@ZunaZurugi yeah the Vita is definitely a benchmark for wannabe retro handhelds, hard to beat engineering from a leader in electronics AND in the video games industry combined with years of deep hacking efforts from very skilled people. I have both OLED and LCD models, and I just bought a new 3DSL XL yesterday, with those 2 systems on CFw's I can cover such a huge library, and I gotta admit I think I'm falling in love with the 3D screen of the 3DS, with eye tracking it works really well and the depth effect really adds something new that will probably remain unique until we have holographics displays or mainstream AR/VR glasses. I'm pretty sure I got IPS screens on mine, the viewing angles are great, very happy right now :o
      Regarding those cheap looking retro devices, they're even more irrelevant when you consider the amount of existing handhelds and thus spare parts for them, when those coming-from-nowhere devices are most likely screwed if something breaks in a couple years from now.

Just wish they had button mapping and a few filter options. That's fairly basic stuff. Emulators on the raspberry pi or psp are a bit complex at times though, so maybe it was just a path they didn't want to go? Excited to see how many more games they release and long term durability tests. Great video man!

    A couple things about build quality are surprising to me that these issues made it to the final product. One is the cart slot is SUPER tight. It's quite difficult and annoying putting a cart in and out. I always smudge up my screen in the process. Second is the hdmi port is not lined up with the hole in the case. I haven't tried to plug a cable in it yet, so I hope it still works.
    It is also annoying how games are split up between carts, like Earthworm Jim 1 and 2 being on separate carts, forcing you to buy both if you want them. They probably did this to help with covering the costs of development by making people spend more for all the carts or by having a bunch more carts than they would otherwise making it more likely people will buy it, seeing it having numerous carts.
    Overall, I like the idea of it and I don't regret buying it, but the quirks and quality issues are very odd.

    Interesting concept, but man, the execution just doesn't seem to be 100%. That's the issue with these handheld clone systems. They might nail some features, but then completely botch others. That inconsistency makes you wonder what the point of it all is. It is neat that they are providing carts for collectors and the value there seems pretty good all things considered, but with all the other issues I could only see myself being interested if the unit is blown wide open for hacks and homebrew.
