    I am loving this core. Also playing through Symphony of the Night. The MiSTer setup gives you multiple interpolation options and scaling options. It also gives you multiple filter options for adjusting the gamma , which, for me, is a huge plus. I can't stand having to tweak the brightness or contrast on my tv for multiple devices connected to the same input through my A/V receiver.
    With the price on this hardware going up, I had to get one and I'm glad I did. I'm looking forward to updates on the Saturn core.

      @atsz. Před 2 lety

      dithering is good if you don't like color banding. But for dithering to look good there must be some kind of blur effect, then on top of that you can add scanlines to sharpen the image while retaining the blended colors. you can also use brighter scanlines to counter the darkness that scanline effects can bring, or use gamma boost.

    The technical expertise and dedication of the MiSTer development community is next level. The core I'm looking forward to the most is the Saturn core. While most retrogamers are familiar with the PS1, the Saturn is lesser known and there are so many, many great games. As a shmup fan, the Saturn is a beast.

    I'm pretty sure that slight color difference can be fixed in the settings for the MiSTer. You can set it to a limited RGB color space if you want it to be more accurate to the original. Or as you mentioned, you can use analogue out from the MiSTer

    • @kunka592
      @kunka592 Před 2 lety +4

      The limited/full RGB range for HDMI should only be changed depending on your monitor and the type of signal it's expecting. I think in this case, the MiSTer core is probably outputting the range of colors that is intended and you can capture it better digitally, but the analog PS1 output is either a tad dim, or maybe the capture setup makes it slightly dim, but generally this is fine because tweaking brightness is fairly normal for analog sources. Also, I'm sure analog output can vary slightly between consoles because they use cheaper resistors with higher tolerances, leading to slight brightness differences. My 2 cents.

      There's also the age of capacitors in the PS1 to consider - if they've degraded slightly over time then that can cause a dimmer signal as opposed to a freshly built or recapped unit.

    To test audio you should use a game that uses the SPU to sequence music. Final Fantasy or any Square RPG at that time are great examples of games that used the SPU. Most voice tracks on PlayStation games used Redbook (streamed off the CD) audio. Castlevania used Redbook for everything other than the sound effects, that's why the music only loads between the loading rooms.

    I'm definitely not an audiophile, but I know the MiSTer core has a filter on the audio. That said, in the SotN sound test I prefer MiSTer, it's possible they are exactly the same and the analog capture is affecting what's in the video. Listen to the end of the lines, there is some noise that's not there in the MiSTer sound.
    In the Chronicles example, they are extremely close, but the MiSTer's filter can be heard throughout. It's most noticeable during the horns section, the original hardware sounds harsher while MiSTer is smoothed out, and IMO sounds better.
    I have original hardware with HDRV component cables to get the best picture to a CRT. And well the MiSTer still just feels right and works great with modern screens and controllers. I actually prefer using a CRT filter to smudge the picture a little, I just think the 2D part looks better blended together rather than using sharp pixels.

    I will leave this here, as it might be handy for "simultaneous gameplay".
    You can't do anything about RNG in games tho... lol
    To play simultaneously with one controller on two systems, I use a blueretro and two gbros adapters.
    I do NOT use the Gamecube controller ports, I use the ports that the Wii Classic controlers user.
    That way I can assign all buttons a normal controller has. On the blueretro, I map all the player 1 buttons to the profile of player 2.
    So if player 1 makes an input, it gets transfered to both controller ports. Since we have two GBros adapters, and we connected them both to the blueretro adapter using the Wii Classic Controller ports - we now can connect each GBros adapter to different systems using bluetooth.
    This can be done with 4 controllers even, but you will need 4 GBros Adapters.

    I can see some many interesting things. The Mister can runs more smoothly and more faster the games, rather than the original hardware, because of it's power. And Hdmi compatibilities.
    As for the sound; the Mister sounds a little more crisper and little more louder because of it's decibels from the buffers are turned a little down just a little hair. The Mister's Hertz decibels are quite different and obviously, this new piece of technology it's more powerful, not only inside at the graphic wise, the audio counterpart it's really benefited from it's modern actual components.

    The darker white is something I've seen from most retro analog consoles. It seems their output at the max of the RGB range is not quite 255 but just short of it. You can fix this with an OSSC by setting the G/Y gain to 39, or for a capture you can use a video editor to tweak the contrast slightly short of clipping. For the OSSC, Pre-ADC to 9 overshoots a bit but is still close, but I prefer G/Y to 39 instead. But if you're doing digital out and want that slight RGB compression of retro console analog outputs, you'd need to lower the gain or contrast slightly.
    So I think the way the analog outs worked on retro consoles was to slightly undershoot the max 255 brightness value, whereas the actual native digital image still goes up to 255 and can be seen as such when outputting through HDMI like with the native HDMI mod for Xbox, or for the Mister FPGA. This isn't the same as limited RGB because the difference is much smaller than the difference between full and limited RGB. I'm guessing retro consoles up to the 6th gen did it for their analog outs as a result of the possibility of overshoot processing done by problematic TVs, so they wanted to be safe and slightly undershoot. It could also have been a noise issue at the top of the RGB range, or maybe a rounding error when outputting limited RGB. I'm sure an engineer who worked on those consoles could share what is going on.

    I watched a few of your mister comparison videos and what I noticed at first is that mister seems to have better motion fluidity than the emulators, but the same effect seems to be happening here as well when compared against the actual console. It feels to me as if Mister would be running at a higher framerate, as in comparing the same game in 30fps vs 60fps, or maybe there is some difference in frame timing? One easy way to notice it is to watch the timer in Ridge Racer, where the PS1 counter seems slightly more sluggish compared to the Mister counter, but I can also notice it in the gameplay itself. In that sense I definitely prefer the Mister, however I want to understand how these differences come about to find out if I can tweak Retroarch to perform in a similar way, as I really love how it feels more fluid.

      Yes the one thing that is not controllable is how the signal is interpreted in the capture phase. But that’s the same for all video capture devices / cameras / etc. it’s why color science is such a huge field in the cinema world

      @@VideoGameEsoterica yes I supposed that. That's why I think that misters colors are the correct ones. Maybe on a crt without any scaling or capture device in the middle. Just straight signal between both, you could compare colors better.

      More than likely yes the hdmi is the pure signal

      @@VideoGameEsoterica but hdmi is not native of ps1. Are you sure the mod doesn't change any colors?

    Why is the question, is the original better or not? Of course the MiSter will be great, it's too funny. CZcamsrs are always inventing shit to upload. Original is best because it's the original, period. You can ask, did the MiSter go beyond original.

      The answer is to a question people care about; is MiSTer a solid alternative. Def not making things up lol
