- The Scala language has been a big Mystery since Kingdom Hearts 3's introduction to Scala Ad Caelum. For years we've wondered if the language can be deciphered and if any of the text found in KH3, Missing Link or the KH4 trailer actually means anything... well we can now answer that question.

My theory is that it's a combination of English letters and Japanese kanji, like what they did with the symbols in Digimon, at least for KH3. Maybe shifting to primarily English for missing link and KH4.
Your not entirely wrong, actually! Some of thr boards are using a unique sytle of japanese phrases
I see some, not just kanji but hiragana and katakana too. like uppercase T looks like ヒ, lowercase J looks like メ. Lowercase A looks like レ. Uppercase U looks like 万. It could take other inspirations but I only know Japanese so I can't be sure. I learned a little bit of Korean but I don't see any that look like Hangul.
As a member of the scala community, we even chased down the original creator of the script. And whats funny, is that ORIGNALLY it wasnt ment to be decoded. It was intended to be a cool "what could it say" situation. Weve been working with Kai in these new findings as well and i have been doing some offhand work with the blue billboard (ive gotten relevant phrases off it) the situation is very fluid and we welcome any and all input

At the moment, only 3 letters are unsolved, and those are X, J, and Q. We're not sure which Z character is uppercase and which is lowercase, but we do know both exist. It's also important to note that there are many errors in Scala-English because those errors are the same that native Japanese speakers commonly make when writing in English. That's why "King Load" is written in the ML screenshot; it's meant to say "King Road."
We've got a few more letters to add to Kai's key; I'm pretty sure he'll update them soon. I'm working together with Televo, Kai, Scala Survivors, and others to decipher the other two scripts found in Scala and Quadratum, though those are much more difficult (the cursive version and the modern-looking font). We're also working to make them fully functioning fonts that can be downloaded(the Scala ad Caelum version can be found on Televo's site, albeit with a few errors because we hadn't yet deciphered some letters when they last released the current live version). We've identified all of the individual letters in those scripts as far as we can tell; it's a matter of figuring out what English (or Japanese) equivalents there are!
Two of the posters in KH3, the Flower Gift one and the Concert one, actually have full, comprehensible sentences in accurate Japanese, albeit rendered in romaji. I hate to be like "Go check out my twitter" but I have the translated posters uploaded in my media there, including those that are in Japanese. I've gotten some help from the Japanese side of the fandom as well with making sure those are accurate.

7:23 That lower-case "y" looking reeeeaaaaalllly familiar. That's the symbol Terra wears as his belt loop, Ven and Aqua have on the intersection of the belts across their chests, Odin's belt loop, Eraqus's armor, and Dark Road's version of Young Xehanort's belt loop.
The first pictures shown of the alphabet have changed since then. The mark of mastery was assumed to be “y” for a bit but was confirmed to be a different symbol. The lowercase “k” symbol is confirmed to be “y” now.
@@steviez8604it looks like theres two "sets" one based off old scala and thr ML scala one is based on the other which was assembled by the scala communtiy which we knew they were watching our work via a tease in the final scenes of Ux. Regardless, the work is very fluid
The fact that there was a world leak list on Reddit over a year ago alleging Mary Poppins was going to be a KH4 world really has me scratching my head now..

@jesepi7 When I first saw it I completely dismissed it but coupled with this and that Nomura interview from years ago, I'm starting to think it's more and more plausible it will be included even if the leak was BS.
First Scala and Missing Link's alphabet will be completely solved then Quadradum's real world alphabet will be next.

KH2 had its own alphabet too but it seems to be single case and I don't know if it means anything since there isn't enough of it to figure it out.
Most of those were placeholders but it would be neat if it was decipherable
@@naysayerck5971 what's funny is the orignal KH1 (yes. It shows up there too. We went looking) and kh2 alphabet were actually replaced by scala script in the re:finals. We can character match Via the ps2 era signs and scala but all point indicate they aren't relevant

Barque might also be an intentional mistake. The Baroque society is described as kind of the lazy/not as good society. Maybe the name being misspelled is meant to reflect that.
Or they’re just shortening it. Or it’s a genuine mistake on the developers end. Who knows?
Or it’s a hint that the r being used can also be romanized from Japanese as ro… I just haven’t had time to experiment this beta. Typically if one letter is romaji, the entire word would also be Romaji to some degree

For the word Barque, in french it means boat( little boat/save boat). Idk if its mean to be understood as in French but this would mean that the place is a barque for the lost/strander ones. Like the MC is an others, Nep is apparently a not so appropriated probably bc he's recruiting whoever he see need a place to be safe.
Oh my.. how neat would it be, if they would really sprinkle words in different languages into this?? So we can only understand it all when fans from different nations work together 😍

I feel like that the text in Scala at the end of 3 doesn't make sense cause its such a short part of kh 3 (base game) only to house the final boss fight against Xehanort, while in Missing Link it seems were gonna be spending alot of time in Scala

There’s been theories about that. Someone also thought Korean at one point could have been a base for some pieces.
There are signs in Quadratum that spell out romanized Japanese words like “deer”

I remember would love for Square to release a book that shows the symbols and what letter they correspond with so we could use the book to understand all the different texts through Scala or any other worlds it may end up in and even let us learn how to write in that way for us to communicate with other KH fans who learn the text.....I think that would be a great idea

What if you translated Scala into Japanese, then into English?
I put some of that blue/purple sign into GPT to translate it and I got back the resulting text: KLYMENSE REYNARDS OF ALEXANDRIA. PROUD HOME OF MAGISTRATES AND SCHOLARS.
I believe there's more on it than what it was able to gather on first pass, but it's neat. Reynards reminds me a lot of the word Reynantis...but I could be reaching on that.

this is awesome to see i was always curious about these symbals during the dlc looking around seeing if they could be translated even asking around but sadly no one knew i remember seeing them pop up during the credits along side the english names of the staff made me think those are what they translated to, its amazing to see how far people have come

Something i want to mention about fictional language is that it doesnt always translate straight into english. For example, some of the chozo script seen in metroid dread and its marketing translates to the chozo language. For example, "metroid" is an english aproximation of the word, in chozoan its more pronounced and spelled "mathroid". Considering so many words have already been directly translated into english, and a lot of the jibberish signs and words dont even form pronouncable words/have numbers and symbols in them, i dont think this is the case for ancient keyblade language. However its just something to keep in mind.
Regardless if you want to know more about chozoan, i highly recommend checking out the wiki page for it as well as the numerous videos that have been made about the subject. A lot of effort was put into that language, especially when its not very prominent outside of the hardcore nerds of the metroid fandom haha.

"J" and "X" it's almost certain that it's the right one
the other i have my doubt, since one of them it's probably not actual letter
What i think is since sora is in the world of fiction, it may be the same symbols for letters in scala ad caelum but the order of that alphabet might be rearranged
I foresee that the second arc of Kingdom Hearts will replace 100 Acre Wood with Mary Poppins's dandy chalk world in Kingdom Hearts IV-VI as the mini-game world. There is no point in keeping Winnie the Pooh around since they covered all his books. ^_^

I have to wonder if the community is looking at it all wrong and that viewing it as an english language instead of something far more exotic and therefore less comprehended like Sanskrit or what have you is actually what Nomura intended. As we all know he's a bit of a hack but even I don't think he'd just do a 1-1 english letter to symbol if he and his team WERE going to develop a whole new language. Could just be that english isn't the guiding key that everyone expects.

At 3:43 "BARQUE" mean a little boat in french its like a little boat where most of the time one to four people in it, you can see one in the cinematic with Rapunzel and Flyyn when they release the lantern.
This is one of the reasons why it's taking so long to release new numbered titles. They are taking time to put stuff like this in the game that nobody gives a damn about. Absolutely ridiculous.

it could be mostly jibberish for visuals, with some real hidden messages buried amongst. or maybe more like hieroglyphics than an alphabet of individual letters. or like characters in Chinese that can have their own individual meaning but then have a different meaning when combined in a certain way with other symbols? might be easier for Japanese or Chinese fans to decipher it?

This reminds me of the inkling language in the Splatoon series. This is because of we've been able to translate it, which has lead to us finding a shirt in it a jellyfish wears that says "fuck you" on it lol, and the fact that it was made to just have an in game font that wasn't english or japanese or any other human language, but then was given some sort of rym and reason in the next game in the series to use it so it is no longer like someone smashed their keyboard.

Kion (黄苑), much like Shion aka 紫苑 (Xion) is a flower. Specifically a flower that grows on mountains in Japan. Glacier Mountain water is fitting I’d say
They’re also visually similar to Shion flowers but are yellow instead of purple

So what are the unversed and the eraqus symbols supposed to mean ? From my understanding of the graphs at 3:25, the eraqus is a lowercase Y and the Unversed is still not 100% confirmed ? I've always wondered if they really meant something or if they're """placeholders""" for real symbols that will be added in later games
Also, the last symbol that is simply named "?" looks kinda similar to this kanji 斗 (which can be read as "TÔ") i guess ?
The Eraqus symbol is lowercase y; the unversed symbol is upper or lowercase Z, we’re not 100% sure yet. The last symbol that looks like 斗 is lowercase q :)

Televo has an entire website dedicated to KH graphics and fonts! They’re actively updating fonts as we find more information

My guess 4 months after posting my original video is DB = DayBreak. Simply because DayBreak is used a lot in KH3 Scala text.

It's not a language. It's a font. The nonsense could be because part of it is encrypted, I suppose, but there's no guarantee of that. Do we know if the japanese version of the games have their own scala text, or is all the understandable stuff in English?

Through out this video I have been wondering about something: "Why would the Scala language translate into English?" I mean: These games are created mostly in japanese and then translated by localisers into various languages, right? So what would all those Scala symbols actually translate if they woud to primarily be translated into Japanese? 🤔
You’d be surprised how much Japanese media references English from music to random phrases. It just seems like a “they think it’s cool” thing like how people like to wear shirts with Kanji on it even though they don’t know what it means. Another reason could be because English is commonly the “second language” taught there like how in America it’s usually Spanish. A popular example similar to what’s being done here is the Unown in Pokémon which is made of entirely the English alphabet (as well as a question mark and an exclamation mark)
Also irrc most games (and software in genral) are programed in English due to most programming languages being in English, so development teams are usually at least semi familiar with it.
I really wonder how their language would sound like. Maybe it's a kind of simlish 😂
