  • I bought this motor with this Aerocraft P-12 in mind. I was looking for the most power I could muster out of the 22c.i. OMC powerhead. I still prefer my 18s for all around use, but this hopped-up high-strung 25hp version is just what I wanted for this little rig. I bought this motor non-running with a fair amount of mouse damage under the hood. it cleaned up decent and appears to be a low hour unit. I did a quick tune up 9n it last weekend in hopes of getting to run it this weekend and it worked out. She's a screamer and with a 9x11P Michigan Wheel PJ-18 prop I reached a top speed of JUST a FUZZ under 29mph. Definitely scooting in this little boat.

      Very nice!! I'm quite pleased with this '71. I also have a pair of parts motors in '69 amd '70 that I will be working on gathering parts for to bring back to life. These are great motors. Awesome power to weight ratio. Kind if high strung for general purposes, but for this rig it is a nice fit since this boat doesn't spend a lot of time just putting around. I still love my 18s for all around use. Only about 1.5-2 mph slower and much better manners in the low end of the speed range. They will certainly keep on going with good care. I'm very happy with this find. It's a keeper for sure. Thanks for watching!

      It is a very nice match to this Aerocraft. I'm quite pleased with it. I'd like to be able to get a little better idle out of it if possible, but its definitely a runner! I'll see if there is any way to improve it when I go through it more thoroughly this winter. This one is certainly a keeper. Yes, I believe I have a winner with this one too. It is a great match to this little boat. I don't expect it will ever idle as well as a pre-1968 18hp. I would like to try tonget a little better idle quality out of it, but what it does now will suffice for 95% of what this boat gets used for. If I want to take this boat fishing, I'll just go back to my '67 Fastwin, or better yet, take my Alumacraft K or my Sea Nymph with a tiller motor and have an open floor. It is just a lower pitch than the standard prop for the Lark. The Lark 40hp prop is a 13P and the Speeditwin is 11P. Seeing as yours is a 4 blade I wouldn't be surprised if it is a lower pitch than standard as well. It may work pretty well on your Speeditwin. If you spin it anyway with the 28hp, the 40 will certainly spin it amd it would be no good to you anyway. I would try it.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Před 4 měsíci +1

      If the one size larger pilot jet doesn't fix the issue, you may need to replace the upper and lower crankshaft seals. If it is drawing air in through a leaking seal, it will cause a lean condition throughout the RPM range along with the obvious sneezing at low idle. That can eventually cause over temperature combustion and could eventually lead to a melted piston if not addressed. Good luck woth your motor. Thanks for watching!

      This motor has proved to be a bit of a challenge. I got it running and was able to test it rather quickly. I did discover a major leak at the upper crank seal. That ended up being a result of rodent urine corrosion. I have recently finished replacing the crankshaft with a good used one. I'm back to tuning and this one was never an easy one. I need to do a full rebuild of the carburetor. I did a cleaning and replaced the needle retainer and the bowl gasket the first time. Thus time it's getting the whole works as well as a new fuel pump. Hopefully it will be singing a beautiful song on the water again this season. This motor really sings when it is right. Thanks for watching!

      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Před 2 lety

      Thank you. This motor, unfortunately, has a rusted sealing surface on the crankshaft for the upper seal. I have purchased a replacement crank and plan to replace it over the winter. It ran great at wide open, but was running lean in the top cylinder. The engine is still in great shape other than that.
      Depending on your particular 12 foot boat, the 25 may be a great fit for it or it may be way too much for it. This boat is rated for 20hp even at the tiller. The 20hp was the highest rating for this same displacement powerhead in the late 1960s when this boat was built. This boat is not very comfortable and doesn't handle well from the tiller. With the remote controls and steering from the center bench, it is very nice.

    Anyways, it looks super clean and stored upright inside, it’s gotta run...the pic he sent of the serial # is terrible, I think it’s 33853 but not 100%, and can’t tell if it’s a R or an M after. I was looking on that Leroy’s ramblings, and if it IS 3385[3] , doesn’t that mean longshaft? It don’t look like a long shaft...and what does the R/M differentiate, nearest I can think is Manual or Remote start? Lol I have no patience to wait a week dammit! Moto is SUPER DUPER clean, like brand new looking. He lives as far away from his storage as I do, so I can’t get another pic or even see till Saturday, if he don’t flake...

      This is a 12 foot boat and it was sold as a tiller boat only with a 20hp rating. At that time 20hp was the max 22 c.i. powerhead in OMCs lineup. It handles the 25hp 22 c.i. motor very nicely and the center steering deck makes a great boat out of it. I've run the big 35.7 c.i 25hp Johnson RD on this boat too. It is a little heavy, but still works surprisingly well. Most 12 footers are about 10hp max. I wanted a deep and wide one with at least 15hp rating. I was really looking for a Model R Alumacraft of a Crestliner Commander when I found this Aerocraft. It probably should have been scrapped it was in such bad shape when I got it. I decided to put the work in and save it though. Thanks for watching!

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Před 3 lety +1

      Well, the '69-'76 25hp is the same 22 c.i. block hot-rodded to about its maximum reliable power. It spins at 6-7k and has a larger carburetor, intake, higher compression, a tuned exhaust and possibly other things I didn't mention. I'm not sure how much more power you are trying to get from an 18hp OMC. For a reliable engine, 25 is about all there is. Idle quality suffers on the 25hp version, but they will definitely go. The easiest way to get 25 hp from one is to buy a 25. You really need the whole combination of modifications to get the extra power and the lower unit uses a needle bearing on the drive shaft bearing also to handle the extra shaft RPM.

      On this boat I use a 9.25x11P prop. On my 14 or 16 footer with passengers I like a 9x9P to keep the RPMs up since that is where these 22 c.i. 25hp motors get their power. 9x10 is a decent all purpose prop for these motors. I have props from 9 to 13 pitch to fit this motor. More than 11P requires near perfect conditions and as light of a load as possible in the boat to get the best performance.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Před 3 lety

      There is a slight amount of flex in the top of the transom with the thrust, but the hull itself has no detectable flex at all at this speed. This is a very rigid little hull for a lightweight (~120lbs) 12-foot aluminum hull. I’m looking at picking up a 1975 25hp Johnson for a really good deal, but I’m wondering if you can troll at speeds of 1 to 2 miles an hour with them?

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Před 9 měsíci

      It depends on the size of your boat, pitch of your prop, and whether you plan to use a trolling plate. With a typical 14 foot aluminum fishing skiff and a stock 11P prop, 1 to 2 mph is not really achievable for any length of time. If you have a large boat, and run a 9x9 prop with a trolling plate, I would say yes. 1 to 2 mph is quite slow for anything but a small motor. I would say for that trolling speed a motor of 7.5hp or less is best. A well tuned 9.9 can probably get you there. These 22c.i. 25hp motors with crankcase recirculation are not the best suited motors to long spells of idle speed. They're great motors, but the best suited to trolling. Thanks for watching!

      @@aaronstarlund8450 Great motors, and it may get you close with a 9x9 prop, especially with the boat full of gear and a passenger. They just aren't known for lots of happy trolling. The etec and the Yamaha have a more refined combustion process and likely will give less troubles at extended low speeds. The 18hp 22c.i. OMCs will troll better than the 25s as a general rule and the pre-1968 models without the crankcase recirculation will troll down very nicely.

    I would have guessed 27mph , a lighter motor seem to do the trick ! I wish you would have said something , I have a 69 Johnson 25hp for sale that I haven’t touched yet but I guess I’ll start on her this week ! Just finished 2 Johnson 6hp and sold them and sold a 62 Evinrude 10hp and finished a QD-19 and ran it in my tank and I don’t know what’s come over me , ask Ron ! Lol. Normally I do 2 outboards a week on a good week ! Lol. But 4 in 2 days ! Lol

      It would have been a trick to get a hold of that '69 you have for a while anyway. It sound like you have been going thru them pretty quick, Dave. This things moves out nicely. 👍

      Old JohnnyRude for some reason the small ones are selling this year ?!?! Maybe because of price or maybe they realize that the 6hp is a really good outboard or perhaps there using smaller plastic boats for duck hunting ? I don’t know and I’m not complaining , I’ve sold more 6hp this year then 4 years combined ! Go figure !

      @@davekimbler2308 The 6s are great little motors. Maybe people are finally realizing that? Thats a huge jump in numbers though. Maybe because everyone has been locked down and half the country is out of work. They have time on their hands and they can't afford to buy new? Whatever it is, its good for the sellers I guess.

      Sorry, I do not have one of those brackets for sale. I onlynhabe one that isn't on a motor amd it is either going on an 18 or a 25. I just haven't decided which yet.

      @@oldjohnnyrude8404 it was a long shot... hey any chance you know the part # im after? It’s really hard to find on marineengines without knowing a motor that came with it, I think maybe it’s 308361? If so, there’s a bunch on eBay:) if not any ideas?
      Edit: any chance you can make a short little video just to show me exactly what the part looks like? The eBay brackets are labeled for the timeframe and size, but they look nothing like the brackets for my bigger motors, so I just want to be sure I’m getting the right ones, they range in price from $20- to a couple hundred $$, some with the motors and some just the bracket but if it’s that different, I probably need the motor as well right, I have a motor for the bigger size outboards that fit the brackets I have (28hp, 35hp)
      Edit #2: yeah I see the 308361 bracket on my motor, that’s obviously not it.

Nice little lake and there is a spot for me to pull up on shore to swap motors when I bring several to run. I'm sure we'll see each other out there. My Aerocraft is pretty easy to spot. Frankly, I'm surprised Harley-Davidson even let OMC use that name, but they used it for a few years anyway. I would have to pass on the trade offer anyway. I was specifically looking for one of these 22 cube 25s for lightweight power for this boat. I'm happy with the results. I'm glad i kept looking. I bought a couple parts motors before this one and hopefully I will have a second, earlier model Sportster as a backup also. I like these motors, but the 18s still hold the top spot. These are a bit too high strung for all around use. Thanks for watching!

      @@MadMax-cw3pn to the best of my knowledge all of the 22c.i. 25hp Evinrudes were known as Sportster. The Johnson version is the same engine, just not given any special moniker other than being 25hp. The 25hp 22c.i powerhead does indeed have different port timing than the 18hp 22c.i. powerhead. That along with a differently weighted crankshaft, different pistons, a tuned exhaust, higher compression heads, and a larger carburetor is how OMC managed to squeeze 25 ponies out of 22c.i. of displacement in a cross flow 2-stroke.
