    Check out Robert Carringer's "The Making of Citizen Kane" for the truth; there were 5 scripts that Welles worked on after Mank submitted his "American" script. Gary Oldman deserves an Oscar for this, but the idea that Welles and Mank didn't share the writing is B.S.

    • @austeritycat2577
      @austeritycat2577 Před 3 lety +1

      But did you read American? Because Gary Oldman said on a interview that everything was there in this first draft of American. Of course it needed treatment, after all it was a 300 page long draft, but if the ideias and scenes and lines were all there, I don't know... And besides he never said he wanted to be credited alone in the movie, he just said he wanted credit...

  • @pdbar8907
    @pdbar8907 Před 3 lety +35

    The treatment of Welles wasn't appropriate. There were six or seven drafts of the screenplay, only the first and last Mank was involved with. The script wouldn't have been what it was without Welles' input/editing in later drafts. The character of Kane in the initial draft was a total skeleton compared to what Welles turned it into. Disappointed with Fincher playing into the "Welles had no part in writing the film" argument that has been pretty much debunked over the last forty years.

    With Wells being known for micro managing every aspect of Kane's production, it is hard to believe he didn't have any input on the screenplay. Specially because there were at least five drafts of the script, not all of them written by Mank.

    Most of the people who have watched Citizen Kane before gave the credit to Orson Welles despite of haivng mank is a co writer, and some of us today are unaware of how much the creation of it's story affected Henry Mankiewicz but because of this film Mank is given more credit. I like how this film is throwing shade on the faults of capitalism. It's a film about the struggles of screenplay writers during that period, The problems before are still present of today hope this film will be given more exposure than the bullshit netflix films.

    In 1931, while waiting in New York for the ship that would take him to Ireland (where, later that year, he would also launch his career as a professional actor), Orson Welles - at age 16 - attended a performance of the Susan Glaspell play, "Alison's House." By the time he left the theater Welles had "banked" in his mind the germinal idea for "Citizen Kane." "Alison is a world-renowned poet about whose personal life almost nothing is known. Upon her death, a reporter is assigned to get behind her public image and reveal the real Alison. After conducting several unsatisfactory interviews, the reporter come to realize how futile his task is going to be. Granted, there is no Rosebud in "Alison's House; however, the plots could not be more similar.

    Thank you for a thoughtful, informative and insightful vision into this film. Because of your review i will be seeing this film, and i will enjoy it all the more because of this.
    From what i have read over the years, WRH inadvertantly ruined Marion Davies career by placing her in dull, grandiose costume-y melodramas, when she was a talented comedienne, sort of an undeveloped 80's Meg Ryan. It must have been a heavy weight to be in WRH's inner circle, knowing he could destroy you in a second, and in Miss Marion's example, even when he didn't try to. He is the human embodiment of absolute power corrupting, and i wonder if he ever had a moment of introspection.
    Now from what i understand of Orson Welles he was terribly egocentric and somewhat immature; I kind of feel that perhaps he deserved less of a writing credit than he would ever admit...
    Thanks again.

    First, Citizen Kane isn't about Hearst. The lie that it is was promoted by Hedda Hopper, who wanted to damage her rival gossip columnist, Louella Parsons, who worked for Hearst papers and championed Welles. The opera story comes from the life of Robert R. McCormick, which Welles knew through his mother, a concert pianist, who was part of the Chicago music scene. And multiple episodes from Kane's life come Orson Welles's own life. e.g., Bernstein was the name of Welles's guardian. Mank was a used-up drunk who realized he was onto something big by working with Welles and tried to grab more credit than he deserved.

    Thanks for putting aspects of the film in perspective.
    Although I love Hollywood history I found this film empty. It took me three times to finish viewing it. I can appreciate movies of D.Fincher but for this one I found it
    was a bad script that goes in all kind of directions. (I think his father only wrote this script at the end of his life). It's not unique to Netflix, but any historical narrative comes
    with its share of distortion. About Mank saving over 100 people from a village in Germany (people who immigrated to the United States) it’s making him sympathetic to the
    viewers, for sure. But while it is true that Herman J.M. facilitated things for those in bad situations, nothing proves the exact number of people he helped. Technically I found
    that the B&W images were «gray» in some parts of the film. At the time (for C Kane) they use old lamps that was giving a lot of contrast on film. The overall look of «Mank»
    seemed like the shoot of luxurious advertising spot. I read that Fincher asked Amanda Sayfried to say her lines about 200 times and in other scene he asked G.Oldman to say
    his lines about a 100 times. Does it make it better for the film, I don’t think so. (At this point perfectionism is a pathology, Fincher should consult a specialist).
    They say a film has three parts; when it’s written, when it’s shot and when it’s edited. If «Mank» tries to prove that Herman is the real man behind «Citizen Kane», he wins
    the first part... but Welles wins hands down for the rest imho.

    I love to fly... I don't have to know how an airplane works, but I'm compelled to find out more and not just chalk it up to magic. I love cinema, too. I truly enjoy movies like "Mank" or "Five Came Back" or "They'll Love Me When I'm Dead" or "Curtiz" or "Trumbo" not because they expose the magic, but because they reveal the genius. "Mank" solves nothing. There will always be a question as to who wrote what. "Mank" is an homage to a different way of making films and an expose' of the most enigmatic question about what is considered the pinnacle of 20th century cinema. I love the Mandalorian, too, by-the-way... but I'm equally interested in why it works for so many people's enjoyment. Ah, cinema!

    Informative movie and commentary--esp. about the political career (short-lived) of Upton Sinclair. "Kane" is more entertaining, or "engaging," because rather than a dramatic monolog by the central character we're given the point of view of characters close to him--Thatcher, Bernstein, Jed Leland, Susan, The Butler, the "objective" lens of the camera--each of which fills us in with the details vital to a fuller understanding of Kane (if not the referent of "Rosebud"). Lacking that distance from its eponym, "Mank" becomes more of a self-indulgent monolog by a single speaking voice--Mank's (or Gary Oldman's). Frankly, it began to wear on me in a manner totally unlike "Kane." Perhaps professional writers should be discouraged from writing up their own lives, especially if that includes a climactic performance for the Monkey Grinder himself. A bit of restraint in the last 30 minutes along with a few more concessions to the visual language of film would have been a welcome lift to us all.

    I thought the movie Mank was good although I had seen Citizen Kane many times. Movies are a powerful medium and unfortunately there are those who will never do research to find fact vs truth. As far as the character of Susan Alexander as a satirical Marion Davies history will show there is no comparison. Davies was very talented, entrepreneurial, and rich. It’s interesting how film makers insert there own hand print to dramatically change the narrative but that’s Hollywood.

  • @EdwardGregoryNYC

    It was a very well-made film, although a few of the exaggerations that didn't fit so well. It wasn't necessary to invent a whole town that he saved - he did save hundreds of Jews (enough for a town), that would have been fine. I don't mind them putting in a fictional character or changing some facts to tell a good story, but it just seemed to jump out when they got things wrong. Overall a great production. Queens' Gambit was better though.

      Orson WellEs did co-wrote the script, this movie portrays Mankiewicz' point of view wich is highly subjective. There is numerous evidence that firmly debunk the theory that Mankiewicz is a sole screenwriter, he wrote the first two drafts, five rewrites followed, changing the script significantly... Movies are usually very creative with facts :).
