- Orson Welles’s classic film “Citizen Kane” was inspired by the life of powerful media baron William Randolph Hearst - but Hearst himself wasn’t very happy about its release.
About Drunk History:
Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

"Kane would have seen it, Kane would have seen the film"
That actually sounded like Jack Black for a second!😂
The delivery was also pretty Wellesian. I can picture it
All the more reason we need a Black Welles biopic
It was 😐 😑
Oh my god!
We need an Orson Wells biopic with Jack Black. He’s so perfect for the roll of crazy ass maverick/genius.
Agreed!
Basically his Carl Denham from King Kong was Orson
Totally agree
I’m 100% going to make the 4 Italian students I have watch Citizen Kane for “host family night” tonight!
Is it cruel or kind?
omg, u're fuckin' moron
Jack Black is an amazing silent actor 😂 hilarious
What do you mean silent actor I heard every single word he said. :)
He was a great Elvis.
There's something to be said about that...
He definitely acts with his face like Belushi and Jim Carrey.
He is a national treasure
That Jack Black and white is so good.
BROgrammer plus It would be cool to see him work with Jack White.
@@khrashingphantom9632 in black and white
They should make a show called Jack Black And White. Featuring Jack Black and Jack White. Shot in Black And White.
Or Blackjack With Jack Black
Its kungfu fighting
I love how lost Lithgow looks when he's waiting for the drunk narrator to give him his next line. This is well-done.
great to see the underdog youtuber Jablinski winning movie awards
Jablinski GAAHAAAAAYEHMES
Sorry, no games this week
Catch you on the Flip flop see you next weeeeaaaueeeaaeeek
Health Tiiiip!!!
Always, pass the fast gas, when in an elevator with uptight power-mongering media moguls, then say "Hot off the presses.
Let's see what's on page 2." Pffft Brap Brap Squeeeeeek! "Oooooh. It's the weekend: extended edition".
The guide on a tour of Hearst Castle actually said that Orson Wells and Citizen Kane were and still are taboo subjects on the property.
It was humiliating for Hearst. Rosebud is the pet name he had for Miriam's privates.
Sheila Blische lol really? How come they don’t mention that on a tour? That’s funny.
Can we dwell on how amazing the production value is in this segment though? The faux period footage of Hearst is superbly done, Lithgow and Jack Black are perfectly cast (and I would argue could have been cast in these roles in Mank), the cinematography is crisp as the dickens and the dynamic theatrical lighting for some of the scene transitions is an excellent imitation of the technique used in Citizen Kane.
i actually applauded when they did the first transition in the style of citizen kane
The lipsynch is on point! Good job guys
Always is
John Lithgow is a treasure. One moment he's doing lowbrow comedy, another he's in award-winning drama. And then he's on Comedy Central outclassing their awfulness
his acting in raising cain was terrifying
Yall should get jack black back. He is so expressive it's amazing
"the movie that no one will let you see" sounds like world's first clickbait, except without clicking
This new David Fincher film looks amazing
first learned of Orson Welles from The Simpsons, therefore never seen his real picture. i googled him and jesus, Jack Black looks just like him
You HAVE to watch this movie. Sooo good. Rosebud!
mountain boy watch it! It’s a beautiful film
Watch Citizen Kane - it's fantastic!
Watch him try to film that Paul mason commercial drunk as shit it is hilarious. Also you have probably heard it referenced before it is pretty popular clip
He also looks exactly like a young Paul Revere
That black and white is so good. We need more of that in today's movies.
They're using all these Orson Welles techniques: dramatic lighting, split screen, deep focus, montages. Hats off to the videographer!
Jack Black you mean? 😜
Yes! It's filmed a lot like parts of Citizen Kane!
Watch Frances Ha.
jakeinator722 watch Roma
Jack Black is amazing, but so is John Lithgow. The part at 3:40 made me laugh so hard I cried.
Is it just me or does Jack Black look like a thick Leonardo DiCaprio in the thumbnail?
Absolutely!!!! I kept seeing it.
Yes he absolutely does. And I can vouche for that comparison, I've had people tell me I look like all three actors.
Leo looked like Jack in the pool scene from Once upon a time in Hollywood when he yelled "WTF"
I think an interesting tidbit to add would have been that the studio actually did not green light his first picture. He wanted to make a movie based on the novel "Heart of Darkness" but was denied because the studio was worried about it going over budget. That script eventually got re-written to become Apocalypse Now by the great Stanley Kubric.
Is this a troll post or is this for real and you mistook Francis Ford Coppola for Kubrick?
Francis Ford Coppola..
Not only did Francis Ford Coppola make "Apocalypse Now" (as Robert Piwonski and Jacob Jones have already mentioned), but Kubrick's last name is spelled with two "k"s, not one.
1:11 Derek Waters IS Peter Sellers AS Herman Mankiewicz... and I love it. 😂
Jack Black needs to portray Orson Welles in a full feature biopic. Awesome!
Somewhere, in an alternative universe, there's a feature film version of this. That universe is happier than this one.
There is now! It's called Mank
Really nice touch to film the historical part in the style of Citizen Kane
I wrote a historical analysis paper on Citizen Kane a few months ago:) It was so cool to see this, Jack Black is brilliant as Welles
Can you plesse post the link ro your paper, please.
@@jgacfhhahjjshggqhhqikwhh3919 lol i deleted it after turning it in
@@livg6219 oh well. That is life, have a lovely one.
At 5yo he had my adoration as Unicron. At 15 he gained my respect as Kane.
I would love to see Drunk History bloopers
Ends with " and he voiced a transformer"
"Aaaaaand he also did the voice in the Transformers movie."
He's referring to the animated feature from 1986, in which Orson Welles voiced Unicron*, a universe-devouring being that charges Megatron/Galvatron with the destruction of the Matrix.
*No, I did not misspell "unicorn."
Man, Jack Black totally kills it when he is in one of these.
Also, they get John Lithgow too? Amazing.
Jack Black was so good.. reminded me of his role in King Kong
This might just be your masterpiece.
Is this "inglorious Basterds" reference
@@kushdubey1111 Yes. Orivaderci
He's drinking freaking whiskey like it's koolaid jeez!
Not, He is drinking a glass of Paul Masson wine

Jack Black as Orson Welles is brilliant! He looks just like him. Holy crap.
As a child of the 70s, I remember Hurst for the diligence Patty had with the PLO more so than Citizen Kain.
When I look at Orson Welles with beer goggles I do see Jack Black.
Omg...I have even *more* respect for John Lithgow for doing this.
Drunk History request: Mueller report
🤣🤣🤣👌🏾
lmao no
That wouldn’t be a very long video
phalspar - Drunk History 1st ever Movie 🍿
What the he'll is the Mueller Report?
I feel like Jack Black's acting here was kinda underrated.
I have Watched "Citizen Kane". I didn't feel like I just watched the greatest movie ever. I get that it was ahead of its time for the time period.
I gotta say, Steve Berg does a damn good Orson Welles impression
Jack's resemblance to Orson is eerily uncanny
Hell yeah, Welles was the voice of Unicron!!!!
I would be all over this as a movie. Lithgow as Hearst JB as Welles - wow.
I need Jack Black playing Orson Welle's like yesterday
Watch "King Kong."
The way this was shot is fantastic! The black and white is entertaining and the lighting is really good. I especially enjoyed the cut away recap.
Herman Mankiewicz (in here) looks like Peter Sellers.
"Kane Would've Seen The Film." Yes i Would've.
Cinematography is out of this world here
I lost it at that laugh :]
John Lithgow is one of the great actors alive!
When i first saw Citizen Kane i was confused. I thought, Rupert Murdoch was a teenager at that time, how could Orson Wells possibly know what he would become ;)
By far the best one I've seen... please give us more of Steve Berg!
Anybody here after watching “Mank” on Netflix???
Yeah, and I still think this the superor movie.
Quite a disappointment. I've read that director David Fincher went to great lengths to have the look of the movie mimic that of those shot when "Kane" was made (including filming in black and white and adding so-called cigarette burns during the "reel changes"), but from the moment you notice the movie's been shot in the widescreen 2.20 : 1 format that didn't exist when the original "Kane" was made you realize Fincher's enthusiasm for visual authenticity is just a gimmick. The only interesting thing you learn is that Mankiewicz hung out at Hearst's estate, was friends with Hearst's girlfriend, Marion Davies, and that another Hearst friend was MGM head Louis B. Mayer. All the more remarkable that Hearst, Mayer & Co. were unable to buy "Kane" from RKO and destroy it.
The voice, the acting , perfect symbiosis! - this is sooo good!
This was awesome! Good cast.
I would’ve loved to see Derek Waters play Herman Mankiewicz in “Mank.”
jack basically played his character from king kong in this
Just got this recommended after watching Mank. Genius.
Did they purposely give this guy all words with a "s"?
I hate reading these kinds of comments because I immediately hone in on EVERY. SINGLE. S. from here on out lol
Jack Black is a powerhouse talent in this. His lip syncing chops are scary.
This was the most entertaining drunk history I ever saw.
The flashback scenes looked beautiful. Really well directed.
The way Jack Black fills a moment!!! Wonderful!
So...who's the hot, drunk, ginger bear? ...Grrrr....
This 5 minutes piece is actually better than Fincher's Mank. The storytelling, the light, the composition... I'm not even kidding
Jack Black is slowly turning into Orson Welles, IRL.
The production is just crazy 😂
Is it weird that even though the narrator is speaking I hear Jack Black's voice when I see Jack Black talk?
Who else can't wait for season 4 of Preacher to kickoff 😃
I can't even make out what it's about and I laughing as
Clicked straight away.. this is a gem
In reality Orson Welles never wrote a single word for the citizen Kane screen play , Herman mankiwiesz wrote it all by him self
False. Assuming you recently saw Mank, that's only half the facts. Mank wrote a version. Welles wrote a version. At the end Wells wrote a final draft which gave so much character to the main character of Kane and made it presentable as a film. The rumor that Welles didn't write a single word was due to Pauline Kale a journalist who had an agenda against Welles and was discredited by almost everyone who had done proper research.
Jack Black did perfectly with this
Fantastic !!!
“Juicy tidbits”
“Having champy” 😂
Came here after watching Mank.
Honestly, this video does a better job at showing the struggles and shortcomings, that went into making Citizen Kane, as well as honours the legacy of the classic.
Also, #JablinskiForOrsonWellesBiopic.
I love how comedy central is bringing CZcamsrs on here! First Gus Johnson and now Jablinski Games?! Incredible
You just can see that any actor that does DH is just having a real blast performing in it.
Fun fact: Hearst's great granddaughter Lydia Hearst-Shaw is married to Talking Dead and @Midnight host Chris Hardwick.
Bowling Prodigy Chris Hardwick?
1:35 WAS THAT A “LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD“ REFERENCE!?
anyone else notice the freemason handshake at 1.06 when orson meets the hollywood guy? nice touch
Wow the actors fit really well with the narration and the style of the story
I feel like Jack Black was born to do this. His expressions, his mannerisms, his total understanding of the character... simply amazing. What I'm saying is, Jack, be in all the movies from now on, and also don't say another fucking word. Have a voice-over do all your lines, and the Academy will come a-knocking. Steve Berg knows: 0:50.
The story teller even yelled "Kane would have seen it! " in Jack blacks voice
Who ever directed this, if you're reading this, I want to congratulate you on the pan with the wide angle lens at 1:44.
Someone noticed ;)
3:40 those parts are my favorite
Best Drunk History ever! Perfectly cast and directed!
As the "Citizen Kane" episode should be. Every film school in the country covers the film and holds in in the highest of regards.
If you haven't seen it, you really owe it to yourself. If you consider yourself a true film buff, it's essential viewing.
Not just my opinion, but fact. It is as close to filmmaking perfection as it is possible to get.
Jack has the best eyebrow expressions!
Best reenactment.
Jack Black and John Lithgow!
Together again for the first time since Orange County?
Jack Black really does look like Orson Welles
3:43 absolute perfection
Derek is attractive in this sketch. So dapper
I wish the had planets bouncing around after every scene John Lithgow did
Take this episode, make a movie out of it. Re use the casting, itll be beautiful
4:49 Ah, *that* iconic neck chop.
Excited for David Fincher's movie about Mankiewicz.
I NEED to see that movie!
3:43 lolll
Yep, that's how it was explained to me as a child, more or less 🍸🍹🍷🥤 were involved. Hearst Castle has the MOST beautiful swimming pools and antiques I have ever seen. I absolutely love giraffes, elephants, sloths, and meerkats...Pandas are okay, and have definitely depreciated in my perception. THANKS so much AGAIN for nothing and nobody. 🍾CHEERS🍻
Jack Black obviously good but when I saw Welles the first time I thought of Vince Vaughn
