Academic Robert Carringer went over all 7 drafts in the 1980's and proved Welles's contribution to the screenplay. Mankiewicz only wrote the first 2 drafts in Victorville while being chaperoned by John Houseman. That leaves the remaining 5 that Welles worked on alone.

I heard that Mankiewicz's original script for "Kane" was going to be even more critical of Hearst because he was mad at Hearst for banning him from his parties. Welles originally wanted to base Charles Foster Kane on Howard Hughes but relented because he didn't think audiences would buy into Hughes eccentricities. Also Susan Alexander wasn't based on Marion Davies but on real-life failed opera singer Ganna Walska.

If Mankiewicz had written Citizen Kane, he would have written Citizen Kane.
    We wouldn’t have a debate.
We only know of the number of drafts and Mank’s invaluable contributions because Welles accepted to share credit with his co-writer despite a contract that allowed him to take full credit. The funny thing is that when Fincher decided to tell this story to restore the truth, he wrote a fiction where most of the facts are not true. Welles continued to work in the exact same collaborative manner and wrote “The magnificent Ambersons” with the help of Joseph Cotten and Jack Moss. As for Mank, he never wrote any original script after Kane. So, yes Mank did co-write Citizen Kane but he didn’t direct it and didn’t star in it. Welles did.

I was really disappointed by this film of Fincher for all kind of reasons that would be too long to explain here. One thing mention in the film is that «rosebud» was a reference to Marion
Davis private parts. And it could have been heard by Mank in one of the parties at the Hearst mansion. But overall, I never really understood why the authorship of the script caused so
much ink to flow. I mean you could almost do a film on every film made because everyone of them has «behind the camera« stories... And I am always wary of stories about people who
are alive or who have lived. You know, for sure, that screenwriters are going to twist the reality or events, only to make a good scene!

I was going to refute your point by mentioning what Gore Vidal (among others) had said/speculated but, having read your comment twice I’m worried.
Davies was a Brooklyn sex-dummy who opened her legs because she thought “opening her mind” would crack her fragile scrambled-egg head. According to modern physics she was correct. Be careful, God bless and think less (the latter shouldn’t be a problem).

In 1931, while waiting in New York for the ship that would take him to Ireland (where, later that same year, his career as a professional actor was launched), Orson Welles attended a performance of the Susan Glaspell play, "Alison's House." By the time he left the theatre, he had "banked" in his head the germinal idea for "Citizen Kane." Alison is a world-renowned poet about whose personal life almost nothing was known. Upon her death, a reporter is assigned to get behind her public image and reveal the true Alison. After a series of disappointing interviews, the reporter recognizes the futility of his task. While there's no Rosebud in "Alison House," the plots could hardly be more similar.
