Early puppy socialization, especially free form, rough and tumble play is extremely important for proper social development and the prevention of aggression issues during the canine adolescent and post adolescent phase.

I’ve probably watched around 50+ of your videos and this may be my all time favorite. Seeing all the labs doing the rough and tumble made my heart so dang happy.
I have always wrestled with my dogs. It's fun for everyone. I let them use their mouth to grab me. I suffer the needle teeth when they are puppies to work on bite inhibition. Hank has it figured out. He is very good at using his mouth without actually biting. He will initiate that kind of play with me but not with anyone else. Except for a few specific people who like to play like that. He definitely remembers which individuals are willing to play rough with him.
We have an older cattle dog mix that has taught our malinois puppy a lot.
They basically take turns winning now. A couple of months ago the mal did not know when or how to back off. Early read him in, as it were.
These days Radar could easily whoop Early but he's fair when they play because an older dog taught him.
My rescue terrier trained my red heeler puppy. The puppy is almost twice the weight of the older girl, but the terrier will put the puppy in its place quickly enough if it gets too rambunctious.

Such an important video. There are lots of dogs in the fields and woods where I take my pup to run and play -- all breeds, all sizes, ages. A few of the dog owners get all alarmed (and often interfere) when one pup gets hold of another's ear or neck. But when not interfered with, the pups work it out
on their own; and, as you say, learn a lot. Today, there was a 13-wk old pup (5 lbs)
in a mock battle with my 6-month (35 lb) Lab. They were having a great old time.
Jordan Peterson brought me hear about the importance with rough and tumble play in humans. Think I was deprived as a child in this I wonder if it could be used as a therapy for awkward children or even autistic children or anyone for that matter. For confidence building. This video confirms that I'm doing the right thing at the dog park when I let the rough housing play out. I only step in if I really feel like my pup is being totally overwhelmed by a dog that's way too much and also has a huge size advantage. My vizsla is 5 months old, and I feel she is doing very well with other dogs and also other people. Bonus, she's pretty fast and can outrun many of the dogs if she needs an escape!

I have a pitbull x shar pei and the way he plays is actually crazy. He plays using insane fighting techniques since a puppy.. He takes down bigger dogs using his body and mounting the side while holding their ear. However I’ve heavily socialised him as a pup so he’s actually okay now it’s other dogs that attack him but he just plays different I think. He’s been attacked 4 times and he doesn’t care lol he just moves on and plays with other dogs. He never barks or anything too unless he’s guarding at home.

Little kids need rough and tumble play for the same reasons! I'm amazed at how much overlap there is between my puppy and kids

Stonnie thank you for all your knowledge. You have helped me, and so many more. People need to research the breeds, and accommodate the dogs. Excercise, play, grooming etc.
I have a 4.5 month Staffordshire Bull Terrier and he is by far the feistiest dog I've ever had. He slams his body and snarls at other puppies his size, but doesn't do the aggressive snarling with larger adult dogs. Now this is my second SBT and I know their heritage, but my first SBT I had for 15 years and they're night and day on personality. I've got my work cut out for me, but it's important that this pup is socialized because I plan to do a lot with him.
He lives with a 9 year spayed Pit Bull and 5 year neutered cat. He will not tolerate the cat around when it's meal time, but he's scared of the cat otherwise. My pack was great before my first SBT passed away and he was best buddies with the cat.

I've got a German shepherd who is just too rough with the girls and won't listen to their corrections when he's being too much. My best bet is that he didn't grow up with other dogs (we got him as an adult) so he never learned proper play procedure. Now he's got 20 lbs on the girls and he knows they aren't REALLY going to hurt him.
And as someone currently working on resocializing and adult dog - I agree. It's real tough
Love this video! This is why I have 5 Labs and yes only one is black. I love watching them play. We had no issues with bite inhibition with number 2,3,4, and 5 because of this. Number 1 learned on us, ouch. My favorite part is when our older dog gets in the mix and has a great time with the crew. Thanks for all you do to make dog's lives better!

I used to raise Catahoula cowdogs. They learned to control their aggressive behavior between their eyes opening at 2 weeks and being weaned at 4 weeks. It seems "hard wired" in their instincts to bite back without thinking anytime they get bit. By 6 weeks they knew better than to bite hard in play. I think this is why they can interact with the wildest and mildest cows without escalating the situation a bit more than necessary.
So we think we just inadvertently adopted a Catahoula. He is now 12 weeks old and we have a cat, and we have been working with him on that retaliatory bite. Do you have any advice or tips that might be helpful?

Hiya, I only just come across your channel so greeting from the UK.
Currently I got a 6 month old Collie/Spaniel/Munsterlander mix.
Every morning when I make the bed we have a full on rough and tumble on the bed and very often in the afternoon or weather pending in the garden.
He has gone from razor like puppy teeth to adult teeth coming thru and as I got young grandchildren he has to learn to adjust his mouthing depends on who he plays with. Now I can't think of anything better to teach them than rough and tumble plus we enjoy it. I have done this with all my dog and they all ended up soft mouthed. I can feed them the smallest of treat from my mouth and don't feel teeth.
Love it. Yes my Caucasian Shepard likes to bother my older Shi poo . Yes she does what the older beagle did

Great advice Stonnie! My Black English Lab, your favorite.,,,is 31/2 months now and is learning how to Socialize with other dogs that are older than her. It has been quite the process so far but I know it will get better in time. Your video reinforces that. Again I just wanted to thank you for all your great information. I always love to watch your videos. Do you ever consider traveling outside of your area and meeting some of your fans? I live in Oregon on the West Coast so I’m pretty far away from your living area. :-)

I know this is a double upload.. This is perfect timing again..! But what stonnie said from 5:00-6:30 is literally happening in my puppies lives right now! We have 2 GSD puppies and they just dominate almost every dog. Even some adult dogs, they just roll on their back right away and our puppies just tag team them… and we socialize the puppies so well but they just want to fight🤣 But they aren’t like out of control crazy, ONLY at puppy class and off leash at parks….Jesus Christ!

I have noticed that the dogs we meet while walking in the woods or by the river are almost always well behaved. Walk without a leash on rough terrain tires puppies and make them play smoother. As a result, owners are less nervous and less likely to interfere with dog games. A positive loop :D

My CO lays down the law as she sees it with my other dogs, including not letting them steal each others food and making sure they stay on a stay command. Then when she tries to solicit play, she gets frustrated because the others won't play with her.
I had a little black Catahoula cowdog gyp that was like that. So domineering that the other dogs were afraid to play with her. She would bully them into play, then abruptly decide she'd had enough and back them off. All my other dogs were afraid of her except my big red male Catahoula that had the legs on her.

Two things that could be ruining your video quality are that you're uploading in 1080 as opposed to 2k or 4k, and that you're recording your videos at 60 frames per second when you should be recording at 24 fps instead. CZcams will throttle your image quality if you don't upload in a format they consider to be optimal.
I've gotten a lot out of your free content so if you have any videography or video editing questions I'd be more than happy to help you out.

@@StonnieDennis Yeah, if you look at the vid you posted before this its uploaded in 4k and looks much better.
As for fps, 24 is the standard for film and television. It provides a much more pleasing and natural look to motion. In video 60 fps is used for slow motion. It works like this, you record your video in 60 fps, but in your video editer you play the video at 24 or 30 fps, in effect cutting your video speed in half. When you both record AND edit your video at 60 fps however you totally elimate all motion blur and it looks very unnatural.
Also, you need to export your video from the editor in 4k and then make sure when uploading to youtube you UPLOAD in 4k as well. If you upload your 4k video in 1080, youtube will make it look all choppy.

Rough and tumble play is important for kids too.
Great video, our dogs have plenty rough and tumble play. Problem is other dogs who are not socialised and exhibit more dominant aggression, one of our farm dogs doesn’t put up with this and will without engaging in a fight try and put them in their place, owners then panic and accuse our dogs of being aggressive. Dogs on leads with fearful owners, our dogs can sense this and will be more dominant and protective especially our older kelpie/collie cross. He’s never been in a fight but he will dominate the other dog and because the other dog is on lead it looks bad, then what happens our younger collie thinks he needs to help out and it’s 2 against 1. The dogs are 1 and 2 years old, male and get walked off lead twice a day in a forest by a river fir 10 miles, they do about 40 miles. Not sure what to do as in all other situations with other dogs he’ll play or ignore them. I’m in uk and any advice is appreciated. Thanks
So i have notice this with my two dogs. I have an 8month old shorthair and a 2yr pyreneese and from day one the shorthair has bullied the pyr. lately he's started curling up next to the pyr and letting the pyr start the play flight.

How do I break bad habits
My golden has gotten into a handful of fights at the dog park because of other dogs. I stopped taking him bc of that reason now he thinks all dogs are trying to fight him.

Sounds like your dog is tired of being bullied (if he is not the bully). I know how i feel about public dog parks... I would for sure advocate for my dog and others if necessary. Dogs have different experinces, rules and upbringings. Some play hard and some not so much. Energy level, breed, age and size also matter. In the perfect world all dogs should have good manners, show respect, invite and play polite. I know Beckman's Dog Training might have some videos you might like. Good luck with your dog✌
My lab feels the same way at the dog park. He thinks every dogs coming to get him at first until he realizes they don't care about him. I really feel like my lab never learned the rough-and-tumble play and how to play right from the beginning. I would definitely socialize my next Labrador better
Stonnie I have a black lab and she is a rough mouthy player 1yr old fixed female. She doesn’t care for my daughters dogs, but I am not sure how to socialize the best. They fight....she has caused the pup to Yelp and go off tail tucked. But the pup goes back...
You need more labs.

so, late last august, i bought a 10 week old pit puppy, though i had preferred an 8 week old.
day 2, after getting this pup home, she flipped the F out, going on a rampage, and started growling, barking, charging and biting at me.
as the months have gone by, she has improved dramatically, but she still has a bit of the tendency to bark and nip at me, though, it's obvious that she isn't trying to hurt me.
my theory is that the breeder spent a couple of weeks playing way, way too aggressively with her, as her behavior at such a young age is absolutely nothing like my first pit puppy behaved.

Stonnie. I just have to ask. What is your view on tail docking and or the reason why it's still in practice. I notice spaniels and pointers (and several other breeds in the us) seem to have docked tails (and some cropped ears). Im just asking since it is illegal in my country and i dont have anything to compare with. Do you see alot of tail injuries on hunting dogs who are not docked?
Bird dogs get their tails docked to prevent damage running in briars. Terriers get their tails docked to prevent damage in fox holes. Neither is a particularly common injury, but docking a dog's tail ALWAYS reduces the dog's agility. I won't dock a dog's tail even if the breed standard requires it. That also goes for front dewclaws, although floppy rear ones are somewhat prone to injury.

PLEASE I NEED HELP
I have a German Shepherd 1 year old and a Great Pyrenees/ Anatolia Shepherd mixed 1 year old both males we got both last year both were over 7 months old when we got them.
THE PROBLEM
They both attack each other and hurt each other, they have battles that last over 15 minute.
We can not sperate them, we have tried pulling them apart but both my husband and myself are disabled.
We have tried water my husband even tried firing his boom stick they separated but go right back at each other he did this 4 times. We tried calling them but 1 will stop then the other will continue, they take turns going after each other.
MY QUESTION IS do we just let them go at it outside and not stop it till they figure who is alpha.

Thank you, Dennis! I too have a young pitbull mix. that was most likely the only surviving puppy, and he found me at about 4 weeks old. He could barely walk and was still wobbly walking. He likes other dogs, and people. But he does get aggressive with me, it seems when he gets tired. How do I teach him when it's just me. He has already dislocated two joints on my old arthritic body. (my avatar is my daughter) I am afraid he will hurt other dogs. He is starting training this coming Saturday. He is about 14 weeks old now, potty trained, simple command trained, crate trained. This is my biggest issue. What else can I do to help him learn when enough is enough? He seems to build up until he is uncontrolable. How do I teach him when to stop escalating and to start calming down?
Crate for rest. Puppies are terrible when they are over tired but many won't stop to rest.
@@KYTrailRider thank you! That is what I did. But since then he's had intensive training, as well as I have also gotten his brother from the next litter. I also found their momma and sister another home and got them out of their deplorable neglectful conditions. Turns out momma was very very sick and had I not done so, she was days away from dying. So having his brother, that is about 4 months younger to play with has helped and that expensive training! I now know, having his brother, that his behavior is not a breed thing, he's got to have doggie autism or ADHD or something like that. He really is just not right. His brother is so chill and relaxed and such a good puppy compared to him. But I am glad they have each other now, his brother definitely helps his disposition. My friend took their mom and sister and are getting her much needed medical attention, and she will be ok. Although I am sure her life has been shortened by the neglect she suffered.
This is my dog to a T. I got him when he was 5 mos. old. He's 10 mos now. I did a dna test on him to find out his breed and he's part American Pit, Lab, Catahoula Leopard Dog, and Boxer. He has always been "mouthy" since I got him. He does the same thing with me. If he plays for a little while all of a sudden it's like a switch is flipped and he gets nuts. In the past month or so he has started to get more rough with me after only a short period of play. I know he's playing, but it's turning into really rough play and I'm getting covered with bruises. He lunges and jumps and nips and now is grabbing my clothes to try to tug. I'm trying to get him to realize that it's not acceptable by turning away from him and walking away and disengaging completely. When he starts getting amped up I'm starting to see the signs quicker and I know I need to break him away from play and try to get him to settle and rest. When he's over tired he's like yours and totally crazy. I'm hoping to figure out how to get him to de-escalate better and how to play less rough because I don't want him to hurt me or someone else some day. He's getting bigger and much stronger and I want to nip it in the bud asap.
@@theresad6990 I had to get expensive training for mine. And he now has an e-collar. And even so, he still has his moments. If you can't afford a boot camp like training. Get an e-collar, but learn how to use it. There have been times that the e-collar is the only thing that helps him realize what his job really is.

@@StonnieDennis The pixelation comes from youtube compressing your videos when you upload them. You notice it the most when you have a lot of small and fine moving objects on the screen, like grass or droplets of water. Even the hairs on a dog's coat could cause this to happen.
To get around this you need to upload your videos at a higher rezolution than 1080. If you upload your video at 1080 or lower, youtube will LIMIT the bitdepth of your video, which will introduce a lot of that pixelation you're seeing. Idk why youtube does this, maybe because there are so many videos being uploaded everyday and they save the higher bitdepth for higher rezolution videos.
Another thing you should know is that 4k isn't the same from camera to camera. I won't get too into it since this comment is getting pretty long already, but the 4k on your phone or on a gopro won't match the 4k on a higher end video camera like a Sony a7iii (probably the most popular prosumer video camera on youtube).

What would you recommend for someone with one dog? I've heard dog parks aren't really a great idea because you don't know what you're getting into.
Some tips I had to learn. Safety 1st it can be hectic & dangerous especially with many dogs. Try make 1 or 2 friends a time
Assess the dog's in park, and the handlers, on their phones or supervising?
Talk to the owners. Go at different times and days try meet some regulars with compatible dogs.
Every time meetings should be calm and lead controlled for safety.
If unsure of safety don't enter. Or leave if new visitors might B potential trouble.
Famous last words 'my dog is very friendly at home"
Supervise and intervene if getting 2out control
Otherwise great for burning energy and socialising with their friends

Your dog doesn't need to be friends with every other dog, some just don't get on

I have 2 chocolate labs 1 is a puppy, she pesters my big boy relentlessly I don’t think I’ve ever seen a dog with this much energy. We will run here until she’s exhausted and the ride home 20-30 minutes alone is enough to replenish her energy and she’s back at it again, he on the other hand, I’ll begrudgingly admit is fat and kinda lazy after 20-30 minutes of play he’s toast for the day lol. She I make her leave him alone? Idk what to do

@@kaecollins8948 I don’t think people view a dog on leash a terrified creature….I thinks that to the average dog owner having on leash dog meetings are most likely going to cause behavioural problems. For example; your dog is pulling toward another dog on leash…they meet but at the same time are being restricted in their movement by the leash. The restriction of the leash builds drive and frustration. I think that alllowing dogs to freely meet is more beneficial to having dogs on meet on leash for the reason of the movement restriction
