Wow, what a kind thing to say. I am truly honored to receive your lovely comment.
I have never received any communication or contact from The Criterion Collection. Though that would be really lovely and a kind of dream come true, ultimately I suppose the most important thing are the films themselves.
Nonetheless, your comment means the world to me and I am so filled with happiness to read it. Thank you very much, and best regards to you, from Tokyo.

I am quite envious of your collection. I hope to one day have every criterion release. Its a tall order, but its one of my lifetime goals!

I think you are the most positive and nice person in the whole Internet, and I love to watch your tube.
I love to collect movies as well, I've started many years ago, my first movie on DVD was "Seven" (I had plan to get "Fight Club" as the first movie, but it wasn't available in the shop at the time). Right now I've basically sold my DVD collection, cause after getting my own apartment the space for stuff suddenly got limits, but I started to buy blu-rays. First my idea od collecting was to only buy movies and TV-Show I've already seen and love to rewatch and revisit, but last year I found out that Criterion is starting to expand into the Region 2, where I am located, co I've started getting some Criterions, either ones I've heard about, but haven't seen (Fisher King, Stalker) or the ones I've seen but loved (Royal Tenenbaums, 12 Angry Men). But I also got many of the titles as a blind buy, just because it looked interesting. Now I have 21 Criterion titles in my collection, some of them are still to be seen, but so far I haven't been disapointed in any of the movies. :)

I hope it lasts for many years.
And it is my pleasure and honor to be able to share with people like you, but more importantly, it is my pleasure and honor to be able to learn from you and be continually inspired by you and the rest of the community. I look forward to our continuing conversations about all things cinema!

    @5meohd Před 5 lety +2

Daisuke, thank you for sharing. I’ve been binge watching your videos over the last couple days as they are precisely what I’ve been looking for (the reviews). Clear and to the point. I also consider the “collecting” aspect of it to be part of the hobby. I’ve had various collections of odd things since O was a child. First rocks, then Lego, then Pokémon cards, DVDs, HD-DVDs, and then... vintage synthesizers. Let me help you feel better about the money you’ve spent: a decent analog synth produced from 1969-1989 typically sells from $400-$40,000 USD. Most of the desirable ones being $1,000-$4,000. Each make/model has some unique feature or arrangement of components, or user interface, or even historical provenance that makes them ALL worthwhile. I’d imagine that in just those three decades a good 5-900 “variants” were made. And I’ve seen guys who have hundreds... Imagine the cost. And then... they have to be repaired/maintained like automobiles. I’ve recently had to give up on the hobby. I reached about 20, most of which are the cheapest around... and still I’ve realized what a vortex it had become. So now I am back to blu-ray and 4K UHD Blu-ray. Which leads me to my question for you. If Criterion decides to jump to 4K or even assuming they skip that and wait for 8K, or maybe have a digital store with lossless 4K/8K downloads... will you bite the bullet and jump in? I personally collect on a slim budget and I have some slight anxiety over this thought. I almost wish the smaller labels could make some sort of negotiation with the consumer - buy a hard copy now, get a discount on any future digital upgrades (completely new restoration/supplements not withstanding). Have you thought about this much? I know you went through it once already. Apparently there is some disagreement to the true resolution of film... I read a Polaroid white-paper that claimed 35mm = 4K and 65mm = 8K. Now I’m hearing those numbers have doubled. Regardless... the expanded color space and dynamic range seem to be giving notable improvements to films like 2001: A Space Odyssey. Again, thank you for sharing! - Benjamen

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 5 lety

Dear Benjamen, thank you for your kind and insightful comment! First, let me say that I am very impressed with your collecting history, regarding synthesizers!
Now, as to your question regarding the possibility of the Criterion Collection in the future, I think that, yes, I would consider getting into the 4K format if Criterion took that plunge. I am perfectly open to that, but I should add the caveat that I am not necessarily pushing for it. I know that Criterion will need to follow the dictates of the market going forward if it hopes to have financial sustainability going forward, and so that is fine with me.
I do appreciate that digital downloads are also an aspect of consumption in today's market, and so I think that this could be a possibility if approached right, and, as you suggest, it could provide a cost-effective alternative for collectors like you and me. Personally, at this point in time, I do not rely upon any digital downloads and so I admit that I am not directly affected. However, I am perfectly open to such a way to consume media.
As for the debate regarding 4K or 8K presentations and the nature of the film watching experience, I have thought a little about it, and while I haven't come to any specific conclusion yet, I am fine with 4K and 8K presentations generally speaking.

@@DaisukeBeppu agreed. I have found some rare criterions on DVD and my most priced in the collection so far are Blood for Dracula and Flesh for Frankenstein, and some other titles. wonderful insight to your collection sir. It is an amazing sight. Space is such an issue for collectors. I usually just buy films that pique my interest but thanks to you I've been exposed to 88films, shameless and other labels. So much so that I have rearranged my shelves in spine numbers for criterion, eureka masters of cinema, 88 films, shameless and indicator and have separated my arrows and steelbooks. I'm not a completist, for example, I'm not into cannibal movies but I certainly would love to get 80% of criterion releases. I do tend to try and get as many films from a certain director or actor. I'm on a fritz lang and vincent price binge at the moment. I'm the same with music, I have about 1500 albums and tend to buy all the releases from an artist to see the career arc. Crazy, I know. Hi Daisuke! Happy November! I hope you and your family had an enjoyable Halloween. I wanted to respond to your question "What type of collector are you?". That is an interesting and very involved question. My collecting has certainly evolved over time. Once upon a time, I collected anything and everything. I find myself being a lot more concentrated now. I am a label collector. The two labels I collect are first and foremost Criterion, and secondly Arrow. I do pick up the occasional Shout/Scream Factory title as well. I am also currently working on completing my Walt Disney Treasures collection. I have 19 of 30 sets there. The other things I collect are exclusives (mostly from Target and Best Buy). Here is the breakdown of how my collection is organized:
    Walt Disney Treasures
    Criterion Collection
    Box Sets
    Arrow Video
    Digibooks
    Steelbooks
Blu Ray/4K (My Shout/Scream Factory titles are in here)
    DVD
    VHS
I do have a fairly large digital collection as well. A lot of the films I see in theaters, I will just pick up digitally, unless there is a must-have release. I also have a book collection that includes a lot of books on film and art. I am not as much of a hardcore book collector though.
I hope that answers your question. I am always interested to see how and what people collect. Thanks as always!
    - David

Hi Daisuke. Great video as usual. It was fascinating to see both your Criterion LD collection (in the previous video) and your DVD/Blu-ray collection after your massive cleanup and reorganization. I really liked results.
You did ask your viewers to comment on or share their Criterion collecting style. That made me think about my own collecting philosophy. For me, I really get interested when Criterion releases a particular film that I’m very fond of. And it’s even more of a bonus when they do something really special with a release. For example, my very first foray into Akira Kurosawa occurred when I was a Senior in High School in 1994. I took a class called Fiction and Film. My teacher introduced us to the films of Akira Kurosawa specifically Throne of Blood and Ran. Then I explored more films of Kurosawa on my own. I was particularly fond of Kagemusha. For years it was only available in the 160 min international cut on VHS and later DVD from CBS/FOX home video. So of course when Criterion came out with their release I had to get it. And even better they released the 180 min Japanese Cut. So that was a special release for me.
Another special release for me was Howard Hawks’ Red River. When I was a child, I would visit my grandfather every Sunday and he would fire up his Sony Beta Max machine and show movies to me and my younger brother. One film that I remember vividly was watching Red River. So when I grew to adulthood, I bought Red River on VHS and later DVD. But for years I longed for a Blu-ray version. So of course when Criterion announced their release I was ecstatic. And again, Criterion went above and beyond. Not only did they include the pre-release version (beautifully restored) which was the only version I had ever seen since childhood, but they included an incredible reconstructed Theatrical Version plus the Borden Chase novel. Just an outstanding set made even greater by nostalgia and my passion for the film.
So for me, I really am attracted to those Criterion releases of films that mean a great deal to me on a personal level.
That being said, I also enjoy going outside my personal favorites and exploring the collection to learn more about film and different directors. I have been renting the Criterion films on iTunes and then if I really enjoy the film I will purchase the Criterion Blu-ray.
Ok I think I went way too long here but your video and question inspired me. Lol.

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  Před 5 lety

Wow... you know, this is such a lovely coincidence, because for me too, for some time there I only knew the international version of KAGEMUSHA, and so when I saw the Japanese version for the first time, it was so stunning (especially when I saw the scene with Takashi Shimura). Also there were some slight differences in editing and music cues, and so it felt in many ways like a different film. Now, of course, the Japanese version has become the standard version for me, but your comment has reminded me of this time of my life, when I was a teenager, and I was just beginning to explore Kurosawa films myself. I haven't thought about this in such a long time, but your comment has reminded me of this great memory. Thank you so much for this.

    • @iQRUZN
      @iQRUZN Před 5 lety +1

Daisuke Beppu yes, I remember I was so surprised to see Takashi Shimura in the Japanese version, even in a small role. I believe it was the last time this great actor appeared in a Kurosawa film. And I agree the Japanese version is stunning. I place it in my top 3 personal favorite Kurosawa films along with Throne of Blood and Seven Samurai. I really like the booklet in the Kagemusha Criterion release. To see many of Kurosawa’s paintings that he did while waiting for financing shows his genius but also his frustration in not being able to film his movie until later. I also like that Kagemusha was an original story and screenplay with historical characters. I think the films that he made that were based on original scripts turned out to be the most purely cinematic.

Ahh yes my answer to your question, I have just started my Criterion collection, i´m getting close to 100 titles, to get the discs here in Sweden its just very hard and very expensive(each title is close to 50 dollars). I have picked and chosen some favorites and titles I really want. From now on I just will buy the UK releases. A huge collection(around 400 blu rays) mostly Masters of cinema and Arrow have come on sale in a local second hand shop, Masters of cinema looks amazing and they have around 25 titles that cross Criterion.

Thank you for the comment... yes as you are obviously well aware, it does take an extra bit of patience to deal with the issues of overseas shipping and the like. I have had the occasional damaged item (but as of yet I have not had any item that has been lost). Surprisingly enough, though, the most difficult times I have had has been when ordering directly from Arrow. There are times when packages never arrive or it takes such a long time for a package to arrive.
I have never had any issue when ordering directly from 88 Films or Eureka. Also Indicator has usually been really good.
Alas, I am not able to order things directly from Criterion. But when I ordered through Barnes & Noble some time back, the packages would always arrive about 1 or 2 months after order, which was really bad. So, now I just resign myself to making orders via Amazon US, which usually gives me the best overall service.

What an amazing collection! Thank you for showing what you have and also for sharing your ideas about collecting. The question: "Why the heck are you doing this?" is one I'm asked by practically everyone I know, except for my fellow collectors on CZcams and Facebook. I can't call myself a casual collector, nor am I a completist (with the exception of a few favorite actresses, etc.). My film interests are varied. Kind of all over the place. I love old Hollywood studio classics and not-so-classics, the Universal horror films, serials, low budget science fiction from the 1950s, Film Noir, Italian horror of the 1960s, cult movies, and so many other things. As for Criterions, I have a nice, growing collection, but I am not interested in films simply because they are out on Criterion. I usually buy what I already know something about, or what I'm quite sure I will appreciate. But I also get adventurous sometimes when the 50% off sales roll around and challenge myself with something I know little about. Most of the time I'm pleasantly surprised, but sometimes not. When I don't like a Criterion (examples: Naked Lunch, Dazed and Confused) I'm happy to give them away to friends rather than try to sell them. I do the same with non-Criterion films. So for me, none of this is about monetary value. Just personal interest and learning more about the cinema. One of my favorite things to do is search for obscure items online, many of which aren't available on commercial, remastered DVDs or Blu-rays, but on the DVD-R format. While some of these may have less than perfect visual quality, the important thing for me is to be able to see the film and have it on the shelf. As for choosing DVD or Blu-ray, I am still very impressed and satisfied with the quality of most DVDs, especially those in the Criterion Collection. So I usually get a Blu-ray only if no DVD is available. My Blu-ray collection is actually very small, and I would never consider replacing all of my DVDs with Blu-rays. There are a few that I have replaced, however, and it's usually because of the extra features. I think I've gone on way too long here. Hope I haven't put you to sleep!!

      Hello, my friend.
Thank you so much. First of all, please let me thank you so much! I have subscribed to your channel, and I am very, very impressed. You are so obviously a film enthusiast and you know so much!! I seem to recall from one of your videos that you had mentioned film school, and so I wonder if this means that you either teach/taught at film school or attended film school? Either way, it sounds like you have so much knowledge! I look forward to learning from you and hearing your insights!
Your comment here is fantastic for many reasons. I love your approach to film, which is "film centered" rather than "label-centric". This is such a great thing, and so this means that you are focused on the films and that means that your collection crosses many labels because you are into the quality of the content. This is the ideal approach for me, and it is one that I hope that I can aspire to one day.
For now, I think that I need to rely on, say, getting all the Criterions, and this is because I have a "collector itch", but I think more fundamentally, for me, I always feel that it is hard for me to break out of my own film bubble and I think that were it not for Criterion, I would not buy the films that I have otherwise purchased because they are in the CC. So, I look to the CC as my own sort of "curator", and so this helps me going forward. Of course, I totally appreciate the point that, by focusing only on CC for the most part, I have in turn created another kind of "CC-focused bubble" so to speak, and so that in itself is something that I am trying to remedy every day. That is the wonderfully frustrating (or frustratingly wonderful) thing about cinema--for every one film that I watch, I know that there are thousands and thousands of films out there that I have not seen or perhaps will not ever see. And the CC is of course only one small portion of the entirety of all cinema, which I always have to remember to acknowledge.
Which is why I love to rely on great film enthusiasts like you to help me along with my own film education. Having discovered your channel, I am very happy indeed! Thank you so much!
And I must say here as well that, as much as I love the blu ray format, I think that the DVD approach is such a great approach too. And I think I mentioned this in a comment in one of your videos, but sometimes the DVD release can be more worthwhile than the corresponding blu ray release.
It is a pleasure to read your comment, and I have one of your videos playing in the background right now. I am listening with great interest. I look forward to talking with you again, my friend.

@@DaisukeBeppu Let me apologize for taking so long to respond to you here, but for some reason I didn't see this reply until today. It must have escaped my radar! Thank you for the kind words and thank you for subscribing to my channel. Allow me to clarify concerning the film classes I've taken. I take non-credit classes at an organization affiliated with the University of Illinois, which is located in my city. The organization is called Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), and it's for people over age 50. They offer courses on art, literature, history, language, etc. And some film classes. So, no, I haven't attended film school, although I wish I had! Most of the classes I've taken were taught by a film scholar/critic named Chuck Koplinski, who is extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about film, and he's a big inspiration in my life. If you're interested, here's a link to my Letterboxd page where you can see the lists of film classes I've taken:
      letterboxd.com/grey1951/
I think your idea of collecting all of the Criterion films is fascinating! Believe me, I completely understand that "collector's itch" you mentioned. And I think your idea of the CC as a "curator" is a good one. Certainly the CC covers so many different genres and directors that you have a virtual film school waiting for you on your shelves. There are so many things I don't know about the cinema. So many areas I haven't explored. For example, I know next to nothing about classic Japanese cinema. I've read a little about the works of Ozu and Kurosawa and some others, but have yet to see any of their films. So I still have a lot to learn, and I have to wonder if I will live long enough to learn it all. I have seen some contemporary Japanese horror films and find them to be very impressive. My favorite is a film called KAIRO aka PULSE. Maybe these films don't interest you. But I notice you've posted videos discussing the works of Dario Argento, so maybe there are other horror films you find worthwhile. I need to start trying to catch up with some of your archives.
Thanks again for connecting with me on CZcams, and I look forward to communicating with you in the future.

This was around the time that the Undertaker was just introduced, there was Jake the Snake Roberts and Typhoon was still Tugboat and there was the Bushwackers, Mr. Perfect, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, The American Dream Dusty Rhodes, Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase. Also this was the time that Macho King Randy Savage returned to being Macho Man (after his loss to the Ultimate Warrior right? in that retirement match, right?), and then he proposed to Elizabeth in the squared circle. I still remember that moment as a kid ("Elizabeth... will you marry me??" And then she says "OOOH YEAAAH").

During my childhood I used to collect coins and draw the flags I could see on TV or in books (before the Internet era). A few years ago I started collecting movies (mostly classics, both Hollywood and non-Hollyood), as well as books (mostly literature) and music. My organization system is kind of similar to yours. Earlier this year I redid my DVDs and Blu-ray’s because I didn’t really have a system and wanted to organize them better. I first went through to get rid of any duplicates and any films I didn’t really want anymore because they were something I liked as a teen but now don’t. Next I took everything off the shelves and organized by groups like putting the Disney Animated Canon in release order, Pixar in release order, the Disney sequels, the Disney live actions divided by classic and modern, horror films together, tv shows together, special box sets like tins, anime, holiday films and my tokusatsu.
When I start doing CC I plan to do these in spine order since it makes sense with the system I made.

I’m not quite sure. I have 4 wooden bookshelves and I currently have them organized like this:
Shelf 1 holds my leather bound books, comics and current unread books
Shelf 2 holds books that I have read plus a couple of my nice TV boxsets that are shaped weirdly
Shelf 3 holds more books I’ve read plus all my Doctor Who DVD’s and books along with my Tokusatsu shows
Shelf 4 is the main movie shelf
Each shelving unit is 5 shelves and almost all of them are filled.
I also have a rolling shelving unit in my room that has 4 shelves total with two holding my games and two holding films and shows I’ve yet to watch.
If I had to take a stab in the dark I’d say I have ~250-~400 since it would depend on if you consider seasons and volumes of a show as separate units or one unit split up. It also depends on on you’d categorize Mystery Science Theater since each episode is a film so would I count it as 1 show, 200+ films or 40 volumes? You can see my dilemma of how to count these up.

I was already a casual collector then, but these events made me want to become a more serious collector.

I guess I fall on the casual-side, though being a cinephile means I collect from other labels beside Criterion-though Criterion makes up the bulk of my collection (at least the plurality). I am not too caught up on specs or format so I have no problem going for DVDs if they are cheaper, but if I really like a film I only have a DVD of I will upgrade it to Blu-Ray (especially If it has more supplements). I do own a few rare Criterion stuff that I inadvertently brought in the late-2000s to early-2010s when I started collecting Criterion, but most of the rare stuff is films I’m not interested in (two possible exceptions now being Port of Shadows and The Third Man).

When I got it I thought it was great, but after studying up on Criterion (and you’re videos) I realize it was actually a pretty poor release compared to their other sets, but I also understand they seemed to have been limited due to the rights and whatnot. Im pretty disappointed they didnt have many of the old dubs, Save the Earth from Smog Monster is gone for example. I love your collection and deep at heart I am tempted by the dedicated completist approach. But in the end the most important thing has to be the content and in particular the merits of the film or TV presentation followed by any extras as opposed to packaging. So although I have some double dipping that will be due to improved picture, sound or background information. And then once I have my storage issues sorted there will have to be a cull! As for ordering the stuff - that has to be according to title with Director boxsets under surname. Thee are no distinctions between DVD and Blu-ray, genre, date or media company let alone spine numbers. If I tried anything like that I would never find anything since apart from anything else I can seldom decide on genre categories and absolutely never remember who has released what or the original release dates of movies (which would come as little surprise to my History tutors)! the only two exceptions are my Shakespeare copies which are kept together and the Dr Who DVDs (and now Blu-rays) which are in date order.

    Greetings from Norway! ;)
Truly a fantastic collection of cinema you have there. You are obviously very dedicated! Been following your videos for a few weeks now, and your passion is very inspiring.
I find that collecting films is very fruitful. There are many aspects to what such a collection may grant. You have the physical aspect of owning something nice to display of course. But you also have the entertainment aspect when watching them. It can be stimulating in so many ways, and eventually teach you something, be extremely deep and make you look at life itself differently. But the experiences can also be shared with a friend or loved one, creating memories and deepen your relationship. And the threshold to enjoy a movie, at least some aspects of it, is not that high I feel.
I’ve only just started collecting a bit. And must say I’m only a casual movie collector at the moment. I value Criterion, Arrow and 4K UHD (in general) equally atm. Unfortunately, only a small portion of The Criterion Collection has been released with region B (my region), so I’m not sure I’ll ever be a «serious» collector of those, like you are. Looking forward to get my Bergman’s Cinema soon though!
I am wondering; how many of these did you watch? I find it a bit hard to find time to watch everything I want, unfortunately..
    Cheers!

To answer your question, yes, as of now, I have seen all the films that are currently in the Criterion Collection physical media catalog. But I totally understand what you say when you talk about how sometimes it is difficult to find time to watch all the films.
I have been fortunate to have been able to watch a lot of these films from several years back, and so the process has been slow but ultimately very rewarding. Please note therefore that I did not watch all of these over the course of a short period of time, but, rather, it was a very long-term period. Also, as a result, I find myself not having time to watch other films, such as, for example, more recent mainstream film releases.

MAN YOU HAVE EVERYTHING, YOU HAVE THE CLOSET... so I think it might be really interesting to see you in a video have a bag (similar with the one they give to their guests in criterion closet) and you make YOUR picks that more or less would be as much as you can hold in the bag... what WOULD YOUR PICKS BE?!!! And of course talk about your picks, the reasons you choose them, what they mean to you... I HONESTLY BELIEVE WOULD BE VERY INTERESTING, especially from a person WHO HAS EVERYTHING... but most probably you would need another person to shoot you in this video. Please consider it... @@DaisukeBeppu Thank you for your answer Daisuke, you are also very very kind! Believe me when I say so that if you ever try to do a video like that it is very difficult to go bad on it, why? First of all it is very easy to see that in some "criterion closet" videos the standards are extremely low... I do get that the whole point of these videos are to have people being relaxed and behave like "kids in a candy store" which usually (and to our pleasure and theirs) they do, but you cannot have some living (and some of them have died) legends that literally are the reason they (criterion employees) work on the industry and not be able to have the sound ( which is more important than the video in these circumstances ) to such a low quality. Anyway, I am sure you understand what I am saying... Thank you for even considering it... whatever you do, have a great time.

Nice collection my man! Now the VHS you have at the bottom, are those Criterion as well? (Never knew they did VHS.) My collection is arranged differently. All movies up to 1970, including Criterion are alphabetical on a shelf in the dining room. Movies from 1970 to 1990 are alphabetical on a shelf in my living room by my TV (I like those the best!) And 1990 to present day are alphabetical on another shelf on the other side of my living room. My Criterion OOP are alphabetical on a glass shelf on my TV wall unit. Criterion from 1970 to present are alphabetical on a shelf right beside my TV, And boxed sets are neatly stacked in my wall units liquor cabinet. LOL As to duplicates, if I see one at a sale in good condition for say $3, I'll buy it and quickly take it to a second hand store where I can get $5 or more for it. And movies like The Tin Drum, although good, is one I don't look forward to seeing again. And chances are Criterion will always have that title, so I'll take that to 2nd hand as well after awhile. So I'm probably more of a Criterion fan than a collector really. Same with OOP titles that get reissued - out with the old and in with the new. Or if I wasn't too keen on it to begin with, just let it go for something else.

And what is more, there were two types of cover for each of these releases: a "silver" cover that matches the corresponding "silver" cover laserdisc release; and a "black" cover that also matches the corresponding non-silver cover laserdisc release.

As for other completionists, I know there are a few of them that I communicate with on Facebook. Of course, the term "completion" can mean different things to different people, and so there are people who are "blu ray complete", and others who are "best version complete" and others who are "DVD and blu ray complete", etc. So this can also depend on how one wishes to approach the hobby of collecting, which is what makes it very exciting.

There is no rule that everyone has to follow. So I choose the spine number order for Criterions and it works fine for me. Whatever works for you. Cheers.

Hello and alas I am not subscribed to the Criterion Channel as it is not offered here in Japan. I have heard many great things about it though.

Thank you so much for your comment, and 3 Criterion DVDs is great! A collection is great, whether it is 1 title or 10 or 100. So, if they are films that you like to watch, then this is great. Thank you so much for your comment.

I'm more concerned about the films. Personally I pick up everything because I don't know if it'll be one the best movies I've ever seen or complete shit. Ive loved film since I was a kid and I want to make films.

My collecting style????? You see I used to think the idea of an "Art Film" was ridiculous. I still find the idea kind of pretentious, but it's fun to be a little pretentious now and again...
Anyways: I GOT IN THIS ARGUMENT... With this kid (18 y.o. I think) I lost.... I argued that film was a lot of superficial propaganda, and he argued that film was "ART". I still think I am basically right, but I suppose there is some "art" made in the process...
That was 12 years ago, and I still don't get it, but he had this list of favorites on MUBI, so I started watching and collecting (some of) them. Most were Criterion type films. This is some of them. The numbers in parenthesis I don't like, so I don't own.
    (1)Pickpocket - (2)A Man Escaped - (3) Letter from an Unknown Woman
    4 Touch of Evil - 5 F for Fake - (6) The Earrings of Madame de . . .
    7 The Life of Oharu
8 The 47 Ronin (1941 DIR Kenji Mizoguchi)
(9)The Insider (1999 DIR Michael Mann)
10 Hidden (2005 DIR Michael Haneke (french))
    11 L'eclisse (1962 DIR Michelangelo Antonioni)
    (12) Miami Vice
    13 Sansho the Bailiff
    (14) Heat
    (15) Collateral
    16 The Prestige
    17 Ugetsu
    18 Yojimbo
    19 Playtime
    20 Mon oncle 1958
    (21) Brand upon the Brain!
22 The Passion of Joan of Arc
And more. I have kind of gotten this list mixed up... Ordet was in there... It ends at 32 with Le Samurai. I collect a lot of other films, many in the Criterion Collection. Some are propaganda, some are art, and some are both. IMHO

Thank you so much for the comment. And I have always tried to maintain a kind of "broad" spectrum attitude when it comes to cinema. But at the same time I totally understand that cinema is different things to different people, which is OK as well because it is always to be a subjective experience.

@@DaisukeBeppu Maybe in America or Japan but not in India, yes there are streaming sites in India as well but they aren't as rich in quantity and quality as they are in USA,Netflix India has only 12% content available compared to Netflix USA,We don't have TCM either, only advantage we have which i think is more than enough to cover up for our loss as moviegoers is that we have the cheapest Internet mobile data available anywhere in the world,1 gb in just 0.26 usd,the plan i am using cost me 7.20 usd for a 3 gb per day data for 90 days, all thanks to our PM Narendra Modi ji....

nufc1892kl a fair comment! I have mentioned it before but I have seen the films in the Criterion Collection. While I have not seen all of the films on the CC releases, I have been fortunate enough to see the films themselves throughout my life since college, which afforded me a great opportunity to be exposed to a lot of cinema.
Unfortunately, this has meant that I usually do not have time to watch a lot of other films and so I have not seen many recent releases such as the Marvel films or recent Oscar nominated films etc.
Also, just because I may have seen the films in the CC does not at all mean that I am an expert in the films themselves. I still have much to learn and so I try to revisit the films as much as I can.
I hope that addresses your comment my friend.
