- We all know man-made chemicals are damaging ecosystems across the planet. But could certain chemicals also be negatively affecting human fertility?
Dr Shanna Swan, an environmental and reproductive epidemiologist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and the author of Count Down, predicts that current trends could not continue much longer without threatening human survival.

I'm old enough to remember the late 1960s and 1970s as a kid. Plastic wasn't nearly as ubiquitous in packaging as it is now. Glass and metal were much more used in personal care products and grocery items. Even in the produce section there were small paper bags to put the items in. Meat was wrapped by the butcher in white paper. Things like cereal, snacks, candy, etc... were in waxed paper liners. In the late 70s and 80s all that disappeared for the most part in favor of plastic. Not only is it a major source of damage to the environment its damaging to our health.
I'm actively shopping to avoid plastic as much as possible. I want to ban single use plastics but in the mean time we have to vote with our dollars.
@@jordanbertagnolli7388 I got to thinking after I posted that and even when I was a teenager in the late 70s every store in the mall put your purchase in a paper bag - department stores, record stores, clothing stores, etc... There weren't many 2 liter bottles of soda - it was all glass bottles or aluminum cans. This made me think of how much has change in 40+ years. Its insidious too - it happens gradually and you don't realize it until almost everything we touch is switched over to plastic.
And Cellophane (for food packaging) was made of cellulose from wood, cotton, hemp, or other sources. It was compostable and biodegradable.
@@jeffmorse645 i am from the Philippines and the amount of plastic you see in our seas is very disheartening.
Not only is it our waste. Waste from other countries end up on our shores as well.
To see this comment, I am reminded that plastic is a created need. We can all live without it.
Yeah. I remember too. Life was not too bad either, I don't see going back to that sort of packaging would be so inconvenient.
What strikes me is that these chemicals are inescapable. You can’t just move out to the country, go off grid, and live in a more rural community to escape because the pesticide levels in those areas are likely higher than those in urban areas. It’s really depressing, actually.
no man look up permaculture. these chemicals can be avoided in an all organic self sustaining farm. the real issues that need to be addressed are more on labor welfare and how wages and unfair/inhumane employment conditions hold people back from being able to even afford proper housing. if people can't even afford a plot of land let alone a decent home we'll never be able to live out of the city and away from all these toxic consumables that exploitative capitalists sell us just to cut back on cost at the expense of our health.
@@divinefeminine8639 I agree that housing is a big issue, one that is going to hit us much harder in coming years. But I’m afraid you couldn’t avoid those chemicals by running an organic sustaining farm. Even if you do, you would still be affected by all the larger agricultural operations around you. And those would not be organic or self-sustaining.
During my lifetime I have seen many chemicals that were formally used only in industry and agriculture and the military turned into products you can buy in the big store. Weed killers and cleaning products and insect pest killers are just a few top items on that list.
Back in 17th and 18th century working class europeans were encouraged to drink more alcohol. Reason is that policy makers and economists believed that will decrease population of "peasants".

Maybe instead of typical cul-de-sacs, people can start developing eco-villages as an alternative and maybe in each eco-village have on-site professionals that specialize in habitat restoration, no-pesticide farming techniques, and soil remediation. That would be a cool way to start.
This is a common problem. My partner and I know of several couples of our age who have had real problems with fertility. So much so that we decided to stop using contraception soon after we got married thinking it might take years to conceive. We had a one month old baby by our first wedding anniversary. 😂 No regrets.

Lack of regular exercise, and people blaming their foods and plastics 🤦♂️
Or it could be all those things? Fertility is impacted by a plethora of different factors. Case studies have been done around the world and despite the hard physical labor carried out by people in developing cities such as Manila and Lahore (where most are employed in informal sectors), both cities have lower fertility rates than national averages. The main reasons? Unhealthy diets imported from the first world and severe and disastrous air, water and land pollution. Exposure to environmental contaminants is having a larger impact on fertility, just as diet and exercise have always had.
I first heard of this problem was in the 90s after watching a random documentary on TV at mid night on decreasing man sperm count might link to endocrine disruption. Now we are 25 years later, we are still talking about it and not much action were seen. Although BPA is limited in the western world, PFAS is being watched, we are still not responsible enough to limit releasing untested chemicals in the environment, and leaving our offspring and the whole world vulnerable to dangerous contaminants that we had yet to found out. DDT, Arsenic in old pesticides, mercury, lead, ... the list go on and on. We do not know what price our future will be paying for our technological advances and greed today.
I think we should consider factors like stress. Today the cost of living FAR exceeds that of the 70's and 80's. It is very true that chemicals play a huge role, but the quality of life is also something that should be mentioned because that plays a large role in this crisis.

Another thing to remember: avoid polyester clothing if you can, especially underwear. Polyester is an almost 100% effective contraceptive for men and it is another major cause of infertility and other hormonal issues among both genders because of how common the material is among clothing, especially fast fashion. If you are wearing a polyester underwear, you are temporarily chemically castrating yourself on the short run and doing great damage to your testosterone and testicular health in the long run.

Stop trying to say the individual should be doing something here. Being healthy is good, that's been known for centuries. Governments are the only ones that can do anything here to stop this, with a simple stroke of a pen. As an individual your only real choice is to live in remote forest off the land.
It can be done step by step too. Ban some plastic type of packaging this year, another type of packaging next year. So supply lines aren't disrupted, and companies have time to get ahead of the changes seeing it will continue until companies protect their consumers as much as is in their ability to.
That is a terrible way of thinking and a terrible idea to inflict on people. People do change these things. Become a great person and you can change the things around you and eventually your country.
@@travellingmerchant2915 That's stupid. We're talking about systemic issues here. Yes, if enough individuals change their behaviour then that does change things, but how do you get enough people to change their behaviours, in enough time to fix the problem? The answer is that you do it with good policy. And in the meantime, you use policy target the massive organisations who have no incentive to change their behaviours due to issues of short-term profitability. Make it harder for them to use these chemicals, create incentives to find alternatives, ban their use from certain products, create a plan to phase them out over a set period. The "let individuals just change" mindset literally never works. The free hand of the market is not very good at accounting for human well being.
@Ryan Swaggert I totally agree with you on a societal level. But in the case of reproductive health, there are some simple things you can do to improve your own personal health. For example using limited amounts of chemical products on your skin and in your hair (perfumes, lotions, hair gel), not use teflon pans etc.
But on a larger scale I agree with you 100% that the change can not be laid on individuals, be it climate or chemicals. We're not however particularly good at electing the right politicians for the job...
@PGH Engineer move along bum
A combination of factors affect fertility and there are things both couples and society as a whole can do... the biggest one is the age when couples try to conceive and let's be honest western societies are not interested in parenthood and family as much as filling their pockets and inundating youth with porn, contraception and creating servants of a 'liberal' society ... just look at how things have changed from our grandparents time to today...they had more stable relationships, focused on nurturing and a simpler way of life.. traditional gender roles are what society needs...now mothers want to rush to the workplace and fathers encourage them as well, who's looking after your child the state
Here is my theory. Human beings, as a society, have had a poor records when it comes to addressing urgent matters in time. By the time we actively address the problem with urgency it deserves, tremendous damage would have already been done.

Lots of people are correctly concerned about stress. But it's important to realize that there are different kinds of stressors: acute and chronic. Life has always had acute stressors, until recently, where we are generally insulated from very dangerous threats. Instead, we have so many chronic stressors, like taxes, finances, and other longer-term concerns. Studies have shown that gradually building up stress tolerance reduces chronic stress. Not only that but fewer and fewer women are able to bring a pregnancy to full term and more start developing problems during pregnancy. This is what my aunt as an OB/Gyn surgeon has been noticing how it's declining drastically in the past 20-15 years. She says that this is entirely because of the food we eat, environmental factors, and other stuff I won't get into here. Even the food you guys eat in the U.S is bad and lacks nutrients because the soil has been damaged by agriculture. Here in Eastern Europe, we are lucky because a lot of lands have stayed virtually intact and I sure as hell grow everything from scratch on the same soil my grandparents and great grandparents and their ancestors before grew their fruits and vegetables.
I once saw this group-photo of some social group for mothers of autistic kids and I noticed that they all look similar. Not the race or facial feature, but the overall appearance style? Probably because they use the same kind of hair products and cosmetics? Therefore exposed to the same chemicals that might've increased risk of autism.
I’m also wondering if part of it has to do with women receiving too much medical care during pregnancy. At least in the US. Doctors are quick to do a pre term c section when even the slightest issue comes up, just “in case”. I think that causes more long term health complications when so many babies are born at 35-39 weeks instead of a natural pregnancy that often goes from 40-43 weeks. Plus so many people are on medications nowadays and that screws up their hormonal balances and also blocks many nutrients from absorbing into the body.
@@agees924 that reminds me of a group of usually moms in the US who are called “crunchy” for doing everything they can to do things naturally, avoid toxins, eat organically and all the rest. Most people here see them as a fringe group of people doing way too much but many people don’t realize the severity of the problem going on in the US.
Yeah most Americans love pizzas and steaks or hamburgers, and deep fried foods. Europeans and most Asian countries tend to incorporate a lot of fresh organic herbs, fruits, and vegetables in their diet compared to the average American. The islanders from the Caribbean like Jamaica and Haitians alongside Bahamian folks grow naturally food from the ground not GMO. I trust that the holy spirt will put in the minds of people to eat naturally.

What I was thinking. Men afraid to have children. U can lose everything. House car income. Over a woman.
A lot of it has to do with lifestyle factors not the environment so much, my husband quit drinking, smoking weed and cigarettes, started exercising losing weight and lifting weights he went from being very low to normal!
It's the packaged chemicals, Fast Food and certainly the lifestyle disorders.
Smoking and drinking? People were doing that MUCH more in my parents' and grandparents' generations. Both my parents smoked (still do) all my grandparents smoked and drank, as did all their friends... I have pictures of myself on my first birthday surrounded by my smiling family, cigs in hand. But everyone had multiple children regardless, (even 9 in my grandmother's case). I simply don't think that is too relevant a reason for infertility today, considering people do it far less.
That is exactly what the video is saying. Because the grandparents smoked and consumed alcohol, the parents generation was weak (I’m talking sperm count here). And since the parents did the same, we are much weaker. So, if we do the same, the future generation pays the price.
Yeah dude my two children I have are the result of me and my wife smoking doobies and getting in the mood after such. And may have a third one and guess how we’ll get in the mood 😁 She doesn’t smoke while pregnant just to be clear, but during conception…yeah.

Rural areas isn’t exclusively agricultural land. I live in the forest. Your concern is valid, but affects the world on the grand scale more than the rural dweller. As farming has been consolidated into the hands of the few, lazier methods of using salt based fertilizers which salt the soil as well as the nutrient run-off polluting water ways and the effort to breed out genetic diversity in crops is a problem affecting the majority. In fact, living on agricultural land is indeed less prominent than ever thanks to corporate farming, zoning laws and correlating taxes that have driven people off the land. Western government is failing it’s constituents thanks to revolving door politics and an unsustainable perspective on economic growth. Why do we want more life on Earth when we don't consider quality of the life already here. We never talk about over population rates causing housing shortage, water shortage food shortage, heating shortage, gas pollutions etc. We humans need to become less toxic to each other and earth.
The oligarchs and governments want more slaves to exploit that simple. At least for the time being still until they have no further use of them. Then they will change to advocating for less humans through more straightforward methodology.
Many plastics contain a synthetic oestrogen chemical, which is used to make the plastics more malleable in production but also has similar effects to real oestrogen. These plastic chemicals can be readily absorbed into the human body via a variety of ways (such as from our foodstuffs to our clothes) and have been proven to cause all kinds of health problems including low sperm counts, birth defects and miscarriages.
Its also proven that everyone now has microplastic accumulation in their organs
Some correction:
Estrogen-LIKE components. For example Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine (hormone system) disruptor that can behave _like_ estrogen and can interfere with the body in similar ways, but it is _not_ estrogen nor synthetic estrogen.
Much like many artificial sweeteners _taste_ sweet, they are not sugar - their structure is very different
Other than that your comment is accurate
It's unlikely that it's providing any significant contribution to the crisis, spinach and quinoa also have chemicals that bind to the estrogen receptors but humans have been eating them for millenia without issues.
The more serious cause of this crisis is the fact that we are in the midst of an obesity epidemic and being obese increases aromatisation of testosterone into estrogen. This means that men are not just having higher estrogens, but have significantly less androgens as a consequence. On top of that, spending an entire day sedentary in an office without access to direct sunlight and then going home to a night of very poor sleep will also drastically lower androgen levels.
This overexaggerated concern about plastics is in my opinion just giving people excuses to do nothing about their bad habits. Individuals need to shoulder some responsibility too and not just blame everything on corporations because even if we ban these chemicals, it won't be enough to fix the problem.
