  • I paid too much money for these broken PS5 and Xbox Series X controllers off of from eBay.
Will I be able to fix them?
    Hope you enjoy!

For the stick not going back to the middle, it's probably the potentiometer that isn't balanced / centered from the factory.
You can add one (or more in parallel) little SMD resistor between the outer leg and center leg to compensate for the natural drift.
The replacement joysticks I bought are coming with 33kOhm 0402 resistors that are compensating for about 3% of drift each.

For glueing plastics, if they're made of ABS or PVC, I usually use a bit of MEK (methylethylketone) on a small brush. The MEK acts as a plasticizer and partly dissolves the plastic, then creating a chemical weld. Stronger and lasts forever, but it only works on certain plastics.

The orange and blue wipers look different when you look at them closely. Probably why it didn't work by just swapping the potentiometer with the orange one. I just bought a set of PS5 and PS4 potentiometers online and swap them when needed. I think the PS5 / PS4 ones have differences too.
You can also add something called a drift fix board to the back of the analogue stick which has two small dials to remove any slight drift

    • @nexus1972
      @nexus1972 Před rokem

drift fix boards are a terrible idea as they reduce the range of motion which is important for some games. Just replace pots if theyre worn as long as the joystick mechanism isnt physically worn or damaged.

I used it to repair a 1mm thick piece of plastic on my bathroom extraction fan, the piece of plastic in question opens and closes the shutter, and it's still working a year later, probably stronger after the fix. I've actually seen someone on youtube mix in lead shavings from a pencil with the Baking Soda it which makes it even stronger!

For stick drift, consider investing in some DeoxIT FaderLube (F-Series). It comes as an aerosol or as a liquid in a needle-tipped bottle. It's specifically made for cleaning and protecting potentiometers that have plastic components. It will clean contact surfaces and provide a thin, lubricating layer that reduces wear on sliding components, especially metal-on-plastic.
In my experience, it's worked to fix most stick drift, especially on JoyCons, the aerosol has a straw that can fit under the little rubber boot on the thumbstick and it does a good job of blasting out any grime. I just give it a spray and move the stick around to work it in. For regular sticks, I've found that you don't even need to pry back the potentiometer housing, the aerosol does a good job of penetrating from the crack where the potentiometer connects to the stick and in the little hole on the side.
DeoxIT D-series is a general purpose contact cleaner that's great as well. It's made to clean pretty much everything and it's also safe for potentiometers, but I've found that the F-series is best for controllers and faders in pro audio gear since it's made specifically for those applications.
Either way, you can't lose. It's about $20 (USD), but I've used the same can for about 5 years now and fixed dozens of controllers and used it to clean a bunch of DJ equipment. If I'm taking apart a controller to clean or fix it, I will always spray the potentiometers to clean and protect them, even if there's no drift.

Those orange and blue colored potentiometers are much different values, not interchangeable here (or anywhere... really... I think)
As far as that one new stick not quite being 100% flush... there are two tricks to that. Make sure that thumbstick module is seated perfectly flush against the board. If not, when the thumbstick cap seats back down on, it will either not allow the stick to sit centered (although it probably will allow that) but the other issue is it will goof with range of motion of the stick. You'll be able to go way further down, than up (or whatever... depending on the angle of the tilt of the module relative to the controller board.
The other trick is there are little PCB's you can buy for about $1 each that allow you to recalibrate existing thumbsticks. I also apply them to brand new thumbsticks (for this reason) so that you can dial them in perfect dead center. If and when the sticks drift again, it's as easy this time as simply calibrating it back in.

And works well with any ABS type of plastic, in a way of melting both pieces together (usually thise glues made of acetone plus few extra ingridients) and providing strong bond after few hours

I always have trouble finding time to do this stuff(or other hobbies). Besides making videos, if you do this privately or did, how did you find the time or want to start doing this on an evening?

Try some epoxy putty for fixing the broken plastic pieces.
I’ve seen it work well on some other channels I watch

Right bumper probably killed by AC Valhalla. Mine was. Thought of gluing it back but I think would just break again. Ordered a replacement piece off aliexpress.

consider getting some epoxy and super glue accelerator. They are cans that you spray the glue to cure quickly. I think that would help for the future.

I do not recommend using IPA for cleaning encoders and pots... It will eventually scratch the surfaces on the contact area. Please get some cleaner/lube, will work best for switches, pots, and sliders, and will increase the longevity many times over. Provided they are not worn down like in your situation

See, I told you! RELIGIOUSLY! Well done young fella. Now with two controllers, you can play with yourself! What fun!

Most software have a dead zone programmed in to take into account that little bit of error around the centre point so it doesn’t keep thinking their is an input.

Look for the original ALPS joysticks (for both controllers). Cheapest ones have different resistance in his potenciometers and can burn another component.

Normaly there are about 70 packets of crisps inside a controller.
Atleast the ones I have bought and refurbished.
