Tamiya TT02 Ford GT Mk2 - How to do the Bodywork Part 1 - Prep & Paint!

  • Hi there! Welcome to this video about how I prepared and painted the Tamiya TT-02 Ford GT Mk 2 body. There are a few hints and tips along the way, I hope you find this video useful. I start by cutting out and preparing the body and applying the window masks, then adding 4 layers of different polycarbonate paint, plus a layer of smoke paint for the windows. Also I prepare the light buckets and buttresses, plus detailing the door mirrors and rear wing.
Thanks for watching, happy RCing, my friends!
Announced in 2019, the Ford GT Mk II is based upon the Ford GT, and the performance has been thoroughly tuned without limitations related to race and public road regulations. A 3.5-liter V6 twin turbo engine capable of 700hp is employed, and the body was refined for aerodynamic efficiency. Only 45 of the full size car are to be produced, but Tamiya is on hand with this R/C model assembly kit depicting the car. The body is molded in polycarbonate, and the kit comes with stickers to apply the black, blue and gold sections of the livery, as well as various logos. Also included are detailed light pods that fit inside the body, and extra Lexan mouldings for the buttresses (wings that extend from each side of the cockpit to the rear fenders).

I always put the Paint cans into a bit of boiling water before using them. Then use Cotton gloves to spray becoz the can is quite hot. With the high pressure inside the can now the paint comes out in a really fine mist. The results are just fantastic !

Hiya mate. First of all I need to remember this video when I'm ripping your voice in future! Anyway hope you are well. Some great tips along the way. I like the tape handle idea. These bodies do slip out of my grip while I'm painting them. Also the lighter flame on the stickers is good although I'm not allowed anything that produces fire these days! I've not tried the score and snap thing. I think I'd cut my finger off. I just go for it with the scissors and no sanding after. However it comes out is how it stays! It's looking brilliant so far. I know what you mean with the paint going blobby. Hadn't thought about warming the tin. I think that this is going to be a stunner once done. Great vid. Hope you're enjoying your weekend mate. We have sunk a few beers and are having a smashing time. Cheers for now 😀

Hiya, Pete! Oh yes, some good sound bites in this one, now I think about it! Go easy on me, mate!
Glad you like the tape handle, it really does help get a grip on the body. Well, we all have our own ways of cutting a body out, viva le difference! Whatever works for you is best, but I find the score and snap more useful as time goes on. I've already finished the body and thank goodness, it wasn't too bad, but a real pain to apply some of those stickers around complex curves, as you'll see. The weekend was nice, good weather and plenty of beer. Just come back from Rob's after trying to spray the Agrios body, which hasn't gone as well as I'd like. Never mind, pizza and Formula 1 for me tonight! Take care, mate, all the best! :O)

This reminds me of a 90’s Porsche 911 GT1 Body I had for my Tamiya Touring car back in the day, it was wide and low, painted white with red and blue details on the hood. I never used it for racing. Oh, Mark, that came out great! I'm not much of a road car guy, but I gotta appreciate this beautiful body shell! And your paint job is really nice, I think at least partly the sparkle was visible in the video, I can imagine it's way more pretty in real life! I totally agree about just painting that engine cover or what it was, way easier than fitting a lot of stickers and also much more durable. It was nice with those side mirror stickers, they become so pliable with a bit of heat. As always, looking forward to the next episode (although of course I have to admit I'm way more excited about your Agrios project).

Excellent Mark....as usual mate. Very good foresight to do the black engine detail like that. Impressive thinking there. It is a comically large size this body, I think some viewers might not appreciate it until they see it for themselves. It is certainly a lesson in cutting stickers out as well......lol. Lots of tightly molded compound curves everywhere are a delight to apply stickers onto (not) I think I am not brave enough for the lighter technique though.....lol..... Lovely video my friend and a fantastic result!!!. 👍

Hi Mark, your skills when finishing these lexan shells never ceases to amaze me, as they're a damned sight harder than the instructions imply. Once again you nailed it. The thought of applying masks and stickers to curved surfaces gives me nightmares - cutting the mask in a certain place and applying heat to get the perfect results is very impressive mate.
Yes indeed the pearl effect came through and worked very well. Did the instructions mention using multiple paints to get this effect, or was it your own doing ? Great idea too in splitting the video into two parts - those stickers deserve a video in their own right. Exceptionally top stuff mate. Can't wait to see you ripping this beauty around a car park. Great Video and it helped me to successfully paint and decal this body. Turned out beautiful and then I made a mistake. I took it to show a friend and stupidly left in my car which got to about 80 F. the heat "pitted" my decals. My question is, have you ever had success by brushing on a clear high gloss varnish or lacquer OVER a decaled lexan body? My thought is the coating would recreate a smooth finish? If you have ever done this, what brand did you use? I appreciate your willingness to always share your time and talents. Thank you.

Hello and many thanks for the nice words. I'm sorry to hear your decals have pitted. This has happened to some of my decals too, over time, wasn't sure if it was heat though, thought they had reacted to my cleaning fluid! I have never tried to coat the decals with clear varnish, I don't think it would work as the coating needs to be for polycarbonate. You'd need many layers to cover the pitting. Hope you find a solution, best regards from Mark...

Have you considered using a hair dryer and a cotton bud rather than the lighter. I find it gives me more control without the risk of burning the body.

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  Před rokem +1

Hi Gary and thanks for the helpful comment. Yes, I do also use a hair dryer to help make those stickers conform, but if you are prepared to risk it, the lighter actually rounds off the sharp edges of the cut decals and makes them less apparent standing up above the Lexan, if that makes any sense!?!?!? Thanks again and all the best from Mark.. :O)

Nice work as always Mark. The body/decals set included with this kit is absolutely fantastic and your addition of pearl white just takes it beyond the next level.
By the way, I'm always impressed with the quality of the window mask material included with Tamiya and other manufacturer's kits (little to no bleed, crisp edges, etc.), have you been able to find this same mask material anywhere in blank sheet form? I restore a lot of vintage buggy and more often than not, the repro bodies don't come with mask so I'm stuck with making my own. It would be nice to use a mask material that's a bit better than the blue tape you find at the hardware store.
Anyway, thanks for posting this video and I look forward the next one. Cheers!!

Hi there and thanks for the nice comment! Glad you like the pearl finish, I love it too. Yes, the Tamiya window mask material is excellent. Yes, you can buy plain sheets of the masking, do a search on the net. This is a link I have for some on amazon:

@@MarkBryanRC Hey Mark, you're not gonna believe this but I just bought the complete Ford GT body set from a US retailer for $41 (roughly 30 pounds) shipped! Having the complete TT02 kit would have been better but my hobby funds have run out for while so I've settled for just the body. I have another TT02 chassis' on which I can mount and run this body.
