  • In this video we are installing the Curt Model 31074 front mount trailer hitch on my 2020 Chevy Colorado Z71. As an added bonus, we are also going through how to remove the front air dam, which is required for the hitch installation.
    This part number should fit all 2nd generation (starting in 2015) Chevy Colorado & GMC Canyon midsize trucks. But, to be safe, make sure you check your truck's compatibility with the online retailer before buying it.
    I intend on running a light-duty snowplow for around the house in the winter, and a removable winch for some occasional light off-roading, and found this setup to be perfect for me.
    A front mount trailer hitch is great for snow plows, tow hooks, steps, and easy maneuvering of trailers!

    Perfect video, I have a ZR2, same frame fastening points but with metal skid plate underneath. I'll see what happens when I get underneath.

    Hey bud. Great instructional video. I am looking at doing the same thing, but I was also thinking about replacing the front skid plate with a steel or aluminum skid plate, as I do some light rock crawling. Would it be possible to replace the front skid plate with the metal skid plate and still use this hitch?

      Worked for me.

    It was great to see someone install the front receiver hitch. Not many trucks have this -- good place to mount a winch for very occasional use. I am thinking of doing the same thing. Do you think it is possible to re-install the factory air dam using some surgery on the plastic part? The air dam improves mpg and cooling so I would like to have it back on.

      I’ve heard of others that made a cutout on the air dam and reinstalled it. It’s been awhile since I’ve installed this one so I don’t remember 100% if any of the clips/screws on the dam interfere with the receiver. I’m sure it can be done though with a little creativity. I’d be curious to see how much of a cooling and MPG benefit the dam offers. (I haven’t noticed much of a difference running without it)

      @@GrazGarage GM uses an air dam for four reason I know about: reduce turbulence and noise, increase mpg, lower air pressure under the truck makes the ride more stable, and it increase air density to the heat exchangers. I tested my 2019 Base model and get about 1 mpg increase at freeway speeds with the air dam vs. without. Saying a product is engineered means everything was done for a reason. Thank you for the great video!

    Do you have any noise from the skid plate being loose in the front?

      I haven’t noticed any changes in noise level with the front hitch on.

    I'll be doing this in the next week or so. Amazon had the hitches for $140, everyplace else that I found was over $200. I have seen it suggested that you can flip all the clips over and re-install the Air Dam easily. Although the receiver is probably in the way once installed..

    • @GrazGarage
      @GrazGarage  Před 3 lety

      I think flipping the clips would just change the direction that you drive the mounting screws from. You could then drive the screws up from the underside, rather than have to fight the bumper to have access to the screw heads.
      You will still have an interference issue with the opening of the receiver hitch though. In order to reinstall the air dam, you’ll need to cut a square into it, which can be done, but is more or less personal preference.

      @@GrazGarage Well the first one apparently made it to Newark CA, where according to shipping information, the post office broke it. They canceled delivery and returned it to sender. Didn't mention it to me. So I tried to contact Customer Service on Amazon, they just referenced Curt Customer Service who haven't replied yet. They were down to half the number in stock so hit re-purchase. Well it got here today. My first payment hasn't been reversed as they indicated it would be. So now I have two charges and one hitch.
      I'm still wondering how they "broke" it.
      I'm also thinking of getting a skid plate fabricated to fit under it. But that's way down the road.

      @GrazGarage  Před 3 lety

      Yikes! Well, if it “broke” that easily, it’s probably better that you got a different one. Sucks that they didn’t tell you and still haven’t refunded you on the first one. Good luck with getting things sorted out!

      @Graz's Garage I'd like to hear more about flipping the clips for air dam reinstall (after cutting for the receiver tube). Had anyone had success doing that and would you just do that on the two hard-to-access bolts, or all of them? I have mine off and am getting ready to put the hitch in place.
      Also, you didn't mention reinstalling the two plastic panels behind the parking lights...I assume you did?
      I was a little unclear on how you dealt with the front of the 'skid plate'. So you didn't use the front two bolts, just pushed it forward as far as possible and used only the rear bolts?
      Thanks. Best video on this project that I have seen.

      @@ebachy Haven't reinstalled the air dam. The clips are just removed and turned over so you can insert the screws from the bottom and not the top. In addition to the hitch I replaced the stock skid plate with an AEV front skid plate. It's been a while but I didn't have to remove anything bet the air dam. Everything else I just loosened and moved a little out of the way if it needed to be moved. Didn't have to take anything off, if I did it went right back on with out any issues. Both were really easy installs. I used a floor jack to hold the hitch in place while I got the first bolts in.

    I have a 2016 Colorado When I went to install hitch the end mounting tabs didn't reach from outside to outside of the frame

    • @GrazGarage
      @GrazGarage  Před 3 lety +1

      Mine was not fitting up at first either. It took a set of jacks and a whole lot of patience to get everything lined up and bolted in. What I found was that it was best to line up one side first and then use the jack on the other side to raise the receiver up to the mounting hole in the frame. It was very snug, but the jack helped get everything aligned.
