Usually those CZcamsrs who say "Gear doesn't matter" have all the gear they need and switch cameras every time a new one come out 😅 Happy to hear a CZcamsr finally saying that is BS
It’s incredibly easy to say something doesn’t matter when you have it already😴😮💨
I shoot everything, including my Oscar-winning Dorito commercials, on a Nokia flip phone.
😂😂😂
Yea, that's the ticket. A Nokia flip phone. Yeaahh.
I mean… there’s all the lineage in a Nokia.
So thats how you got that "Vintage" look 💅
That's all you need
Personally when I say "gear doesn't matter" that's more for someone who is just starting because sometimes all the gear can get intimidating, overwhelming, and expensive. So before investing in some gear, start with what you have or can afford. But as you start to move through your career, gear 100% matters. You can get by with a minimal amount these days, but there's limitations when you don't use the correct tools. Great video man 🚀
Well basically all the cameras have mostly the same type functions elements while cheapo cameras have almost none. So for someone just starting, if they can afford it, the more expensive gear is usually by far the better choice. So someone just starting out, going Cheapo is usually the wrong advice. Unless they have no other choice. If they really want to do it, intimidating and overwhelming will be the least of their problems. That's far more myth the FACT. Now cost, gear can get very expensive, that much will always be true.
I agree, I also think that there’s no harm in doing research on what’s out there, sometimes the “gear doesn’t matter” brigade (not you) hammers that out (while still making gear videos) where in actuality, that primary research could save someone from making a bad buying decision
@@natureredux1957 the problem with buying something more expensive is what if they don't enjoy it? My first camera was a $500 dollar camera. It's easy for me now to look at a $2-5k camera and say it's a great value for what it offers and it's easier to justify because I know I'll use it for what I need but someone starting out may buy that camera and it sits on a shelf for years until they resell it for much less because they don't enjoy it or it's too complicated and lose interest. There's arguments for both sides
@@KofiYeboah yep doing the research to figure out what you truly need not what someone on the internet (including me cause I'll just say buy a LUMIX😂) says to buy so you avoid a bad buying decision
@@DustinArmstrongPro I agree 🙏🏾
I’m a huge advocate of gear matters because it defines the limitations you’re trapped in. If you’re skilled and need specific things, the gear is going to play a major role in everything. The iPhone “shot on iPhone 15” neglects the over 100k technocrane they used. And when it comes to cameras, I’m not going to use a canon m50mk ii for home tours because of the 4k crop factor and terrible low light performance. Thank you for this video 🙌 love the new spot
I like the content on the channel for the production value. Generally shows a good behind the scenes of a general commercial shoot. On the topic, I will share my thoughts. The commercial production life has a whole different ecosystem and rules of engagement. Assuming there is budget, the deal memo will include all the particulars to covering rental deposits, costs, equipment insurance and proof of general liability. Some larger production include the need for completion and performance bonds. In larger productions, the camera is the smaller of the expense in the broader context. At this professional level, stuff has already been figured out, crew size, budget, equipment, creative treatment, etc, etc.
Moving down the scale to the one or two person operation. Small to no budget is generally the conversation at this level. Creative vision and decision are more directly controlled at this level as well. And this is where equipment choice or ownership could matter, for the following considerations: There familiarity and comfort of owning personal camera equipment with preferred accessories to squeeze out production value, being able to control the consistency and quality for a proud final product. Equipment ownership also allows flexibility & availability, with scheduling for last minute gigs and personal projects without relying on rentals, particular if you do not live in an urban area. Cost savings of owning vs annual rental costs is survivable particularly if you can the kit active. Professional development is huge, which can only be achieved with quality time behind the camera. This is how owing the equipment allows guaranteed practice time on your craft for those highly motivated.
Camera equipment is cheap relative to years ago. Work and scrimp enough, any and everyone can buy the basics camera, glass, grip, stabilizing tools that a rental house has. Granted, investment is required for the camera(s), lenses, and accessories. But the assumption is that the vision is to make you, yourself or brand economically viable or hirable. ROI is staying behind the camera enough that your booking stays consistent and profitable. Bookings are critical to remove the anxiety of camera ownership.
Facts, depending on the gig and the job, gear can make a difference both workflow wise and the way it looks. Solid points bro!
I think most people don't elaborate when they say "gear doesn't matter". When you are a beginner and don't know how to use a camera at all, it doesn't matter if you have a Sony Venice or an entry level Canon DSLR you likely will not end up with fantastic results. But, just because you have a Canon DSLR, that shouldn't stop you from creating. Context matters so much, and I feel those that make that statement don't give enough of it. In professional environments gear will always matter, as a hobbyist or someone who is just starting out, your focus should be on just doing the thing.
I think the issue is there isn’t much conversation about context in exchange to seem like an expert among beginners and that’s simply uncharitable, gear matters, not in place of more important factors of production, but matters still ✌🏾
IT DOES INDEED MATTER! 100%!
Shoot a Sony Venice ONLY ONCE and you will never want to go back to a Sony FX3, who everybody claims "is a real cinema camera". It's BS! Also the new Fuji hype in photoraphy.. of course an X100v is cheaper than a medium format GFX, but once you shot an actual GFX you realize the X100V is a toy and cant EVER compete with an actualy medium format sensor or the image a medium format lens produces. Adapt any vintage lens with a corrective lens to one of these crop sensor Fujis and it will OPEN YOUR EYES on how inferior these Fuji lenses are. And on top of it, ANY 15 year old, late-2000s Full Frame DSLR will blow ANY crop sensor Fiji to pieces in terms of image style (not resolution, but how freaking amazing the images look by default). Same goes for high end video cameras or digital vs analog. If you hold the REAL DEAL in your hands and you still argue that "gear doesn't matter", then you are full of it.
I would say, yes it does especially when shooting quality work I have an pocket 6k with nice lenses with character from my perspective
I guess its true. depends on the type of the job and especially when you want to push high at post production. sometimes you just have to chose what to emphasize within limited budget. for me a lot of time client want to limit very low budget and expact to bring high results.. (and please excuse my english.. i speak english as second language) Thank you for this video it really help. From south korea :)
See. I see a lot of people in here saying oh well. Gear really doesn't matter is a term. That's made for people who are just starting out in the industry. And for that, I say gear matters for them more than pretty much anybody until you hit the top end and then your matter is more for them. The truth is when you're in the middle ground. When you already have some experience, but you're not making Oscar winning s*** yet. That's when you can use anything and be comfortable with it. And that's when using anything will actually help you and benefit you rather than confining you. However, when you're starting out, the less s*** you have, the less you can practice certain things like. For example, rolling car shots can't do those without some sort of car mounting rig? Whether it's attils or alien a suction cup. With a very small camera or something. If you don't have that, you cannot practice it. It's not possible just like without the right amount of light. You cannot practice 3 point lighting at night. Because you don't have any ambient light to work with. Just like without a Gimble, you're not gonna get those super smooth and silk shots. It's just not a possibility you can get close. Maybe, but you're not gonna ever replicate it. Gear matters more for people just coming into the industry than pretty much. Anyone else because the truth is, if you have a camera and the lens, can you tell a story? Yes, will that story be good, possibly? Will it look good? Probably not. If you're telling me today that you can go and make a very good story with nothing but ambient light. One camera End one lens and no experience at all. I am calling big loads of b******* The difference is the amount of gear you buy. And what gear you buy? For example, your camera once you get into the higher end. Doesn't really matter. The only difference that you'll actually be worried about are low light performance and if it has. A global shutter or not outside of that all the other s*** really ceases to matter and is more preference. The lenses you buy don't matter. Nearly as much as people think because people will spend $2000 on a cinema. Prime lens that looks like a 1988 built Helios. However, the lights you have matter if the color temperature is not accurate, then you can't accurately set your camera, which means everything will look off and you ll have to fix it in post at worst, if there's any green magenta shift and there's no green magenta shift on. The light itself. As you can't shifted greener magenta on purpose to negate. That that is a big deal, because then your shit'll look green or magenta.
The amounts of light you have matter. The more the more opportunities, the more creative you can get a smoke. Machine or a haze machine is dammed near necessary. If you're going after the traditional cinematic look.
C stands and grip gear. All you need. You can get away with having less of them, but you can't have none of them.
You need a storage solution, weather, it's a twenty terabyte nas Or if it's just a 2 TB. SSD you need one? You need some sort of editor whether it's free resolve studio, resolve or cap cut or something you need to have it. If you're gonna use audio, you need good audio. However, to be fair, you can make silent movies and make them well If you're gonna use audio, you need good audio. However, to be fair, you can make silent movies and make them well. You need some sort of music streaming service. That will not hit you with a copyright strike. Every 5 seconds for sound effects and music, but at the end of the day, none of this is buying you skill. Unfortunately, you can't just buy that. The only thing you can do is buy opportunity to get skill. For example I own a ronin 4d However, that does not mean that when I very first got this camera I was making good images with it quite the opposite. In fact, I look back at the very first thing I ever put together. And I think what the f*** was I doing because I didn't understand the camera. I didn't understand just the entire flow of the system and it was. A learning curve.
However, I look at all the stuff and I'm thinking you know what that looks pretty good. However, if I would have never had the camera, I would have never been able to do the stuff I'd do now which is commercial work. Yes, I could have gotten an fx 3 a gimbal, some lenses, a bunch of wires and cables to connect it all, but it would take like 10 minutes to go from handheld to. Gimble, and it would throw everything down, making everything a lot more lengthy and running. My headache from a slight headache to a severe migraine.
I have Lights now when I started. I only had one light and I thought to myself you know what I'll just use bounces, and I did use bounces and quite effectively. However, there were some situations where that just didn't work and I was just f***** Not commercially. Mind you. This is all private but now that I have multiple lights, practical bulbs in the form of the nanlight pavo bulbs. I don't have to worry about anything if I wanna make an image. Then I just go and I do it. There is nothing fighting back against me. I'm learning more now than I ever have before. And of course, there is gonna be a spot where most people plateau, but the reason I find that people plateau is because they Run out of gear at some point when you Don't have any More gear to learn you're Only learning skills. That you can do with the gear that you have. And that takes a lot more time. However, if you just have more gear, you are always learning about more gear. How it works. And you're still getting that knowledge from your own gear at the same rate. However, you never feel like you hit a plateau. Because you always have more s*** to learn. I dare you right now if you think you actually hit a plateau. Go get a random filmmaking tool that requires some effort and knowledge to use that. You've never used before and like guarantee you. It'll break you out. Again. It won't buy you skill, but it'll give you the opportunity to learn and be more creative limitation is phenomenal. However, imagine if you were told from the moment you were born that you are only going to do this one thing and you couldn't do anything else, you would never learn how to do anything else. However, if you were told that the world is yours to conquer, then you would learn a whole bunch of things just because you could just because you have the opportunity to so that's why gear does matter what type of gear and how you use it, that's up to you, but if you. Don't have it. You can't do anything. And more importantly, if you don't have the will to actually practice, then there's nothing gear or money or time will do fo you
Folks that usually say GEAR doesn't matter have serious EGO issues. Also, if it doesn't matter, well most of those folks should get it right Out of Camera instead of living in Lightroom Daily. Gear is by FAR the most important thing because without gear, one can't even do the Job. Gear has always mattered and always will matter.
It’s definitely as important as a decision as anything, I think most people default to that statement without looking at the big picture
kofi,
I would like to express my appreciation for the excellent video that you have produced. I think that equipment plays a crucial role in video production. However, I strongly believe that the story is paramount, and both aspects are interdependent and equally important.
Thank you for creating such a valuable piece of content.
Best regards,
Anytime my friend !
Great work, man. That low shot at 5:27 is 🔥! One of those videos where you’re glued to the chair! You got my support, bro. Cheers from Italy
Thank you man 🙏🏾🙏🏾
this take is needed, i see many creators talking in binaries in the gear does/doesn't matter. i believe gear does matter but not when it comes to the quality of your films but the execution. certain pieces of gear do certain jobs better than others and some gear inspires people to pick it up and use it more than others. the gear should be driving you to be creative, not to be chasing pixels
Nail on the head, I totally agree 🙏🏾
The reality is that gear doesn't matter compared to certain things that matter a lot more, like great costumes, the best locations, building sets, props, etc. When people say gear doesn't matter it's because so many spend their money on the wrong things, like fancy lenses, instead of putting that money into a better location that would have made a bigger impact on the quality of the project.
Awesome bro… I am actually starting to lately enjoy and prefer these types of project equipment breakdown for different and specific shoots instead of the usual gear vlogs. These videos show different scenarios, and the types of gear used or suitable for those said scenarios. With pros and cons. Good job as always my brother. 👏🏽
It’ll be a lot more regular for sure 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Amazing content man! You have tried so many lenses that are on my radar that you are in unique position to help me if you can.
I shoot Fuji and only have photo lenses, but as I'm getting more in videography I want some cine lens. I am closest to Mitakon Speedmaster T1. Other options are Sirui Nightwalker, 7Artisan Vision, SLR Magic... or even Laowa Nanomorph or Blazar s35.
Ocasionally I shoot something for client but mostly it is practice and putting myself out there.
So what would you recomend as first budget cine lens?
P.S. I am fully aware of difference between spherical and anamorphic lenses but at this point I just want lens that will help me to get more cinematic look, less clinical and less "normal".
This is helpful for my business as well! Keep killing the gym 💪
Thanks homie !
What is your power solution for Lidar with Focus Pro handle?
Is it only have a battery life of 2.5 hr?
Dope video bro. Congrats on the new space. 👏🏾
Thank you !
I keep hearing "Raptor" is a league above Komodo-x in terms of image quality, how would you compare those two cameras image wise?
And some others say they are indistinguishable from each other..
We still don't really know what we are losing by going KX instead of Raptor.
It would be great to see a "side by side" from this specific project because of the controlled environment and the proper grading,
Keep up the great work ;)
Great perspective brotha! And loving the office setup
Thank you unc!! 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Thank you!
Much appreciated, sir!
You're welcome!
@@KofiYeboah
I have a quick question for you, because I’m going to do some reshoots soon.
DP said my project was shot 6K, but the media files said that they are 4K.
So, was it really recorded on the 4K format?
I just want to keep things consistent. Thanks!
Incredible work and insight as always!
Thanks man 😁😁😁
What kind of backdrop material was used whie shooting on set?
Think it was just at a local fabric store! (Art department got it)
THE NEW SET UP IS FIRE!
Working on it 😊😊
Gear only matters to a certain point. If it’s gas obsession then it most certainly doesn’t matter.
Obsession of any kind isn’t a good thing
Congrats on the new spot and keep the IG fitness stories coming 😂😂
The public slander is in full effect 😂
new setup? fire. music video footage? firee. this video itself? fiiireee! great video as always homie!
You already know! More soon 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Thanks for sharing bro.
No problem 👍
I think the gear doesn’t matter convo started as a “gear doesn’t matter more than…..” but we watered it down to gear doesn’t matter, for click baity and pretentious reasons (i.e people being annoyed by “what camera do you use???” or “wow your camera takes SUCH good pics / videos”) but the reality is the gear always has and always will matter lmao.
Ahah I can get behind that 😅
Great video brother, very thorough
Thank you !
Gear matters only when you're work requires you need it to create that work. It's interesting how we don;t think gear matters until we purchase said gear and realize how much we needed it all along! The key is that the work requires the gear. imho
Exactly ! CONTEXT matters
Nice to still see Dana Dolly getting some use. Gimbals are crazy overused when all you need are stable, subtle movements. Also, "financial burden" really hits home 😢
Ahah it’s such a nice movement but LORD setting it up sucks
Love the new set bro.
Thanks you homie ! It’s a work in progress 🙏🏾
DUDE! This is a SERIOUS shoot. WAW
It was fun !
4:13 😳 I wonder if that rental company knows you’re using that tripod. 😉 good thing you’re insured! 🤣
No one snitch 🤷🏾♂️
Ok but who’s winning the rap beef rn Drake or Kendrick? 😅
I'm still using the GH5 and an iPhone and a tripod to film everything. 🤷🏽♂️
Awesome 👏🏾
gear matters when you need the vision demands for it, if you have potato gear you can adapt the vision to fulfil it. If you can align the vision to your reality, what ever gear you have is enough.
Exactly, context and self awareness is key to finding the tools for the job
Dana Dolly is the Brand
You’re correct 😅
Good thing about having multiple CZcams channels is that you can subscribe to your favourite CZcamsr on all of them. Thanks for this video.
Thank you !
Sheeeesh BTS team went crazy on this one 👀
Yall killed it!
Facts on facts.
Always consider the job then pick the gear second 🔥🙏🏾
The better you get the better your gear should be. There is nothing more annoying than knowing that you have the skills to create great work but your gear is potato quality
It all should be contextual, I wouldn’t shoot a mom and pop set up on an arri like I wouldn’t try to do a Netflix film on an iPhone ( generally )
It don’t matter … I film 90% of events on my phone and people think it’s from an actual camera it’s all your eye
You might have missed the entire point of this video. but ok
Gear is for clients. Gear shouldn’t hold up your own work.
Filming a Doritos commercial, you might be going with a RED or an Arri. Filming your own short film , doc, or music video; a Pocket 4K with some shots from the iPhone mixed in, completely acceptable.
Why can’t I shoot my short film on a red? I’m kidding, gear shouldn’t be in the way of production, however no aspect should realistically that’s not exclusive to gear
#teamlivingroomposts!!
Ahha we graduated !
I enjoyed this. Gear "technically" doesn't matter. Hence the term. However, time and efficiency does, which is why choosing the right gear for the project is extremely important. For example you could have a cheap 4k or 8k camera and yield the same results as a Red or any other expensive one if you had plenty of time to manipulate the image with other equipment e.g. lights, etc. However on every film set time is always of the essence. Which then makes gear, and that fancy camera that saves time with it's features, matter.....a lot!
Right, context and self awareness above all 🙏🏾
My God HIRE ME
Demanding 😂😊
Gear wont fix a bad DP.
No, no it wont
What does BS mean? Being Silly? Lol
Yes , exactly that 😂
