The trailer doesn't do this film justice. Going by this, it doesn't look like anything special but it really, really is. A true hidden gem of a film.
I was jus like, what am I watching rn. But because if the comments. I'm in it. Thanks
My dad found this movie at our local thrift store, and I cannot imagine why someone would ever want to get rid of this film. This film is amazing!!!
It’s so sad. You can see a little girl who was doing just fine, but at some moment everthing started to fall appart. Slowly loosing family and feeling alone and stupid that you’re not enough but still you belive you’re right. I find it sad, how adult her is fine with that part of her childhood, cause it was long ago and now it’s just a fading memorie.
For me it is not about those memories fading. It is about an adult who was stuck in her child life, so full of regrets and what ifs. When she flashbacks those moments she may find it reassuring and happy but the reality is she regrets those opportunities like grabbing the play role or the handshaking part hence she always revisit those memories hoping for a different ending. Her trip to the countryside opened up her eyes so when Toshio come after with her in the ending she didn't hesitate a bit to be with him so she will not stuck with her child life asking "what if" i married toshio, she can't live with the thoughts anymore..as you can see in the ending as she and toshio get away from the car her little self was left behind. She doesn't want to live with that baggage anymore
@@duedate2811 That’s a good point :)
Honestly I had to stop watching and come back to it. It was so depressing. The final scene with the classmates and the boyfriend was the best part. It’s not their best imo.
Daisy Ridley's American accent is pretty good.
Rey Skywalker !
@@LegitMan335 NEVER
@@ThomasBolt Nice try, you don't have ownership
@@davidwallgren7575 yeah but I do have the the power to vote with my wallet
@@ThomasBolt "vote with my wallet" lmao ok bro you'll topple the multimillion dollar franchise by saving your $20 (on the movie that came out five years ago)
very underappreciated ghibli film. being a 20 something year old woman watching this i connected with it so much
mate I watched it when I was 16 and fucking bawled for the rest of the evening
Yes. One of my favourite Ghibli films is getting the treatment it deserves.
+eclipsesonic I agree. Hopefully, this should MUST WIN for Best Animated Feature.
Watched this movie yesterday and I absolutely loved it. I could relate to her childhood self so much. This movie made me so nostalgic. I am 23 yrs late to watch the movie but it is now my favourite animated film 💕💕
Thank you GKids for having the balls to release this in America.
+ALonelyWeeaboo Or rather, the lack there of. The reason Disney didn't want to release this is because of the references to periods.
+Linkers
...But they made a short film about periods before,so why on earth would they use that excuse? o-0;
Because the short film you're talking about is ancient and they've changed their policies since then.
True....>
Maybe they just never found the right time to dub it?
This is one of the best films ever made.
One of the best movie ever made.
💯💜
I first watched this film in the fall of 1999, as part of an anime film festival. And I have been waiting for the past *sixteen years* for it to *finally* get a US release.
*Finally!!*
I loved this movie. I cried my heart out. I don’t know how it felt . I just saw my whole life right before my eyes. I became obsessed with this movie. Interestingly now my daughter is in 5th grade.
Kesinlikle izlenmesi gereken çok hoş bir film.Bir Ghibli fanı olarak bu filme de bayılıyorum.Sakin, huzurlu, pamuk gibi bir akışı var🤍
I'm glad I stumbled upon this movie. Been looking for something good to watch for a while now.
Watched this again last night and it hit harder than ever. Beautiful film. Takahata is a true artist.
I have always loved this movie. I have only ever seen it in Japanese with English subtitles.
All you needed to tell me was Daisy Ridley and I'm sold.
It's not worth it though. She has an american accent in it, can hardly even tell it's her
One of the best anime movie after Whisper of the hearth.
I hope GKIDS can distribute more english dubs for Post-Ghibli anime films.
I just got back from watching this movie subbed. This movie is stunning and I can't wait to see it again!
Okay we are getting a stunning movie, as well as Ahsoka and Rey in the same movie. Pretty dope.
Got to watch this
My all time favourite ❤
Daisy Ridley
I would personally make this film rated R, because it is incredibly profound and can genuinely trigger pain in those who had a rough childhood.
True
fr
seriously, this movie as fine as a PG-rated or PG-13 rated movie
Thank you, thank you, thank you GKIDS for doing this. I saw this once in Japanese and will be happy to own it in English.
I wanna watch it !
So excited for this! It'd be great if GKIDS could license "Ocean Waves" also, another Studio Ghibli production never released in North America (yet...).
I've been waiting on this forever.
Disney goes hard when it comes to their English dubs.
+Neoxon "GKIDS proudly presents"
+Neoxon - GKIDS (which is owned by Universal), not Disney.
Disney _used_ to have rights to this film, but they withheld it from release, only allowing it to air once, subtitled, on Turner Classic Movies about 10 years ago.
+Soufriere They didn't withhold it. There was no audience for it until now.
+Neoxon Disney did not produced the dub of this
+Paul Francis Goneda I agree. It's GKids that did this. Remember, Disney is bullshit!!!
The fact that this took so long to be released in the us because they talk about periods 💀
Why does this trailer give me Wes Anderson feels?
+TheInfernoCommander The music, probably.
anderson's rated it as one of his top animated movies
It also feels so much like a Greta Gerwig film.
GIVE ISAO TAKAHATA AND HAYAO MYAZAKI AN OSCAR!!!!!!!
+Marko Ouroboros Miyazaki won for Spirited Away. Takahata was nominated and should have won last year for Princess Kaguya, but didn't. :(
I agree!!!!!!!
+Marko Ouroboros Takahata was asked to join The Academy's voting committee this past year. He declined. I don't think he's interested in receiving an Oscar at this point.
Also, Miyazaki has won two Oscars. One for Spirited Away, and the other for his work in animation.
Only Yesterday's chance to win Best Animated Feature was 25 years ago. You do realize that, right?
+Marko Ouroboros I agree on this one!!!
i want to see this. Can't wait for it to come to dc on february!
The animation style reminds me of Metropolis!
This was a very good movie and it’s better than some of the big ones such as earwig and the witch
ah my childhood! love this anime movie!
Thank God for English dub.Ocean Waves is next
+Ronnie Clay Why thank god? Dubs suck
I hate reading sub titles, they make you miss out on most of the show. Besides DVD and Blu-ray gives people a choice as to what language you want to hear the characters speak, so you have nothing to complain about
+Michael McGrath That's not true. At all. Only bad dubs are bad. Good dubs, however, are absolutely fine. And as far as I'm concerned, you can't go wrong with any of the Miyazaki-Ghibli movies in English. Disney and GKids both did a great job with them.
Honestly, if you don't like the dubs, don't watch them. But don't go around telling other people that dubs suck and that they shouldn't watch them that way. People can decide for themselves.
Turnajon Naausica of the valley of the wind
Where can I watch it please?
bro the fact that the boys looking up the dress is the most replayed part 😟
it shows to me that fully grown men are watching just to see up the girl’s dress, even if it’s animated its still weird to me
Hopefully, this MUST WIN in the Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature.
This movie came out in 1991. I'm not sure if it's even eligible. Even so, it has no chance of being nominated, let alone winning.
paperbullet1945 It did had a good rate, and some very good reviews about it. Maybe this will win hopefully.
Bruh. The Boy and The Beast. Please watch that movie. Then come back and tell me that The Boy and The Beast won't win
❤️
Disney goes all out to perfect their English dubs
Gkids is privately owned... thank goodness.
Thank God they’re gone. They ruined Ponyo with Noah Cyrus and the other Jonas brother. Would’ve been better had they not done Disney channel casting.
Damn I was wondering why I didn't like the voices. Where the hell is the original English version???
WHEN?! WHEN?! I MUST KNOWWWWWW
Background music please
Why is it playing in NoCal for 2 days but only the opening day for SoCal? I wasn't able to go today :(
Will kids enjoy this movie?
probably no
depends on the kid
@@muniaisworthit Thanks :)
Shame we have to wait until July for the English release on DVD...I've seen this film in original Japanese with English subtitles but I have a feeling I'd like this version better :)
Be careful about telling that to purists! They'll napalm you for saying that.
That said, if you like the dub, you like the dub.
In b4 weaboos post their comment: "Subs > Dubs". xD
Wait, so how come it's just now getting released in the u.s.
Did people have trouble getting permission to dub it?
Dustin Totten oh ok thank you!!
+Dustin Totten why would you get the rights to something if you didn't want to release it?
anime 30 tahun yang lalu
main girl's voice sounds off, doesn't connect with the visuals
+Paul Staker yeah, i'm also not fond of Taeko's voice......
EpicRainbowLollipop Still looks good though. I'll watch the Japanese dub.
+Paul Staker what's a 27 year old woman supposed to sound like? just wonderin
nessisasquid well, I think adult taeko has an okay voice but young taeko's voice is atrocious. the guy's voice and accent bothers me too since I don't think he captures the essence of the original Japanese voice
nessisasquid You'd be surprised how high an older woman's natural voice can go.
Her dad is such a jerk.
whats the point of getting a non voice actor to not even use their normal voice... like wtf
Mixed feelings about this anime. Could I compare this to a master piece like Code Geass? Probably not. Maybe a Clannad clone, not sure. Feels Confused Man
+alota maple Slice of life.
+alota maple this is a movie, dont compare it to tv-series anime like code geass. even the genre is completely different .
+Viktor Machine Herald Only Yesterday came out in '91 so definitely not a clone. It's not really romanced focused and when it was created, its intended audience were adults of the female persuasion but during its initial run in the theatres it garnered the attention of both genders the male and female audiences. Great thing about this movie is the sole focus is on the adult version of Taeko and has flashbacks of her primary school self. Not a coming of age film as it's more of the protagonist's self reflection and nostalgia through the eyes of a 27 year old.
I hate the dub
+AngryMidgetProd Did you even see the whole dub yet? You're using this trailer as an indication that the dub is going to be bad?
If so, then how can you know for sure that you'll dislike it?
+Turnajon I dislike dubs in general, so that's it.
Oh, I love this film so much. It's right up there with Whisper of the Heart in terms of how well it captures an atmosphere.
I consider whisper of the heart to be really underrated. it's in my top three Ghibli films. I just love how it captures youth and frustration and adolescence.
@@creekandseminole its my fav movie
I love this more than whisper
damn all you had to say is whisper of the heart
The best studio ghibli film ever ever ever...i wish i could see this movie now..its gonna be great by the looks of it now!!!
As a longtime Ghibli fan who finds Takahata-sensei is too often overlooked, I must say…
*_Thank you, GKIDS._* (dub sounds pretty good, by the way)
I don't live anywhere close to any cinemas showing this. :( But you can bet I'll be first in line to buy the Blu-Ray when it comes out. I've been waiting literally a decade for this release.
+Soufriere Someone who finally appreciates the dub. Weeaboos hate the dub
Paul Francis Goneda Weebs always hate dubs, even if they're good (I've yet to hear a _bad_ dub of a Ghibli film). It's what they do. It gives purpose to their pathetic lives.
+Soufriere I can certainly agree that the Ghibli dubs are good. I didn't care for "The Wind Rises" dub, but not because it was a bad dub, it just didn't really click with me. All the others have been good, though, and while I have yet to hear this and "When Marnie Was There" (I DO own it, I just haven't gotten around to watching it yet), I'm hopeful both are of the same quality.
+Paul Francis Goneda Sadly, such people are entitled to hate a dub if they want to, whether their reasons are understandable or not. However, as long as you enjoy the dub that's the real thing that counts.
That said, you are not alone in thinking the Ghibli dubs are great. I too am a fan of them.
+Turnajon I have seen the subbed version for this and it was great. I can't wait to hear the dub for this one. I hope its great like the most of the others such as Whisper of the Heart and From up on Poppy Hill. The Japanese version has one of my favorite voices from the subbed versions of Studio Ghibli, Yoko Honna, the Japanese voice of Shizuku. Anyway, Studio Ghibli's dubs are some of the best and I like their Japanese versions very much too.
Takahata ! my most favourite Ghibli director in the world. Not that Mr. Miyazaki is not good , but i always feel he cannot best Takahata. The kind of soul that Mr. Takahata manages to give all of his films I think Miyazaki manages to give something similar in Porco Rosso, My most favourite of Miyazaki films.
watched this movie already a several times years ago, personally i enjoy the movies in their original languaje, im not into waiting 25 years for a dub. Has no sense to me. Still i salute the effor of bringing this pictures to others viewers that may not be into watching this without a proper dub, because this movie is a masterpiece.
+Daniel Peroni
You don't have to "wait 25 years" for the English version. It'll be out this year.
Im so glad a small theatre was playing this dub before official release. It was a very amazing dub
Finally! This is one of my favorite Studio Gihbli movies, i loved it even though i had to read subs. Now i can enjoy it in English.
It's about derned time! Thanks a ton, GKIDS, for finally bringing this masterpiece into North America! ^U^
tHe day has come.
I can't wait to get it July 5th! OWO
In before people start declaring the dub sucks… (you know it's going to happen with ANY Ghibli film.)
Speaking for myself this sounds very promising. I like what I hear so far. Then again I've always loved the Disney-GKids-Disney dubs (except for THE WIND RISES, that one was mediocre at best.)
Oh great. You know it's going to be good.
When are they gonna release the English blu-ray?
Regretfully, NO SLEEPER TRAIN IN JAPAN like in this movie.
it's spirited away.
Wow, 27 is to old to be picky...now I suddenly feel really old....
When was the original movie released?
1991
1991, never got released by Disney because the film briefly talks about menstruation and Disney feared that boys would make fun of girls because they watched the film. They couldn't censor it either due to Studio Ghibli's policy of no edits.
Wow. What pussies. Thanks for telling me.
+majohnson91 to be fair, it would've happened in real life if they did release it because you know, kids. They aren't very wise about their actions, mainly boys but whatever
Blu-ray when?
Does anyone have any idea when this newly-dubbed version hits store shelves? I'm holding out for the English cast :)

Thanks, but alas I'll have to hold out even longer - I'm in the UK!
Blu-ray release date?
+Marvin K. Probably this fall again, but in theaters, February 26th, 2016.

why satan
just HAD to choose THIS movie
DIDNT YOU
It is a shame the same effort as the dub was not put into the music. Live players would benefit this greatly (unless it is just the trailer that is bad)
They merely reused the same music from the original movie.
wow, the delivery on that first line was awful.
+FastFlyerJr It wasn't that bad to me. I've heard much worse. This sounds pretty competent to my ears.
During the phone call? Seemed fine to me..
I watched it last week , but I didn't like it that much
God damn dubbing ruins everything. They just need to leave it as it was made voices always in dubs mute everything else in the background.
+alsanjuro That's just for the trailer...
+KingOfBritannia Yeah, and sorry but dubbing "ruins everything"? It's not true. At all. Nobody said you have to like the dub at all; if you don't like it, fine. But that doesn't mean that all dubs are inherently bad. There are some that ARE disastrous, true, the first dub of "Nausicaa", WARRIORS OF THE WIND, for instance. But there ARE good dubs as well, and the Disney-Ghibli dubs are among them. Dubbing doesn't ruin anything; if anything, it brings these movies to a wider audience who otherwise wouldn't watch subs. As far as Ghibli is concerned, neither Disney nor GKids have done anything to "ruin" these movies, so there really is no point.
