You sir, are a genius!! I normally use either a splitting axe or maul to create the initial cut, then drive a wedge into the cut with a rock hammer… This saves a LOT of effort getting wedges started. Thanks for the tip.
@@mugsyjeff maybe, but with your low impact approach you dont have things bouncing about all over the place. Work smarter, not harder. A lot of safety regulations these days are in place to save the idiots who lack the common sense that keeps a fella owning all his fingers and toes.

And keep wood away from garage door and down spouts, wood will definitely go flying and banging into things. Bent doors and down spouts will definitely get the wife mad 😡. Cheerios buddy from Canada 🇨🇦!😊
I like this method,it's clever!..I live in california and have quite a bit of black acacia to split,it's hard as a rock..I think this is the way to do it..thanks
I’m watching this while I’m icing a nice lump on my shin. Was being a macho man swinging sledge wildly. Glad it wasn’t my axe. Be safe guys and work smart not hard like this fella.
AMAZING, similar to my method, but yours is much better i used to drill 3 to 4 holes using long drill bit, then u use the wedge to split it, but your method by using a saw, is much faster than drilling into the log before splitting it i liked it
You scared me before with your flip flops and a pitch fork, now power tools and flip flops? Who's macho now? Stay warm. It will be 95F here tomorrow. 😅
High Summer here in Ireland so I have the heat turned off because it's so warm. The temperature soared to 12.9C today and we are expecting 14C tomorrow. Mind you, I did think about turning the heat on tonight. It's 3.27am now (can't sleep, guilty conscience) and it's 6C. A couple of weeks ago we did actually have some heat, about 2 weeks of 22-25C, which was very pleasant but it's got cool and we are all getting depressed. Best Wishes, Brendan.
A small piece of paperbark like this splits easily with a blocksplitter. Use a real piece of eucalyptus hardwood to show how hard it is on stringybark or tallowood. Unless its been dried for years your wedges will require the standard back of blocksplitter to be swung hard over shoulder to split. Paper bark is the softest eucalyptus and the easiest to split with any method.
Good method. I've seen Australian red hardwood that will blunt a brand new chainsaw chain on just one cut. It also stinks of sulphur when burning it. destroy
Good idea except that you shouldn't be using those "wedges" like this. Wedges are made of softer metal so that they won't chip. Striking a former axe head against the back of your hardened maul is a fairly effective way to send shards of metal at high velocity into your femoral arteriy in your leg. Play smart and safe :)
Some guys re-fasten house roofs by smacking one hammer into another to get the claw under the nail head quickly and cleanly without damaging the iron. I found the only time you chip either head is when one hammer hits the corner of the other hammer's head. When I started focussing on hitting them dead squarely, face to face, no more chips. Also, before I learned this and did get chips hitting me in the leg, sometimes it drew a bit of blood, but I never worried about one getting stuck. Much less giving me a life threatening injury 🤣 Definitely will always wear eye protection though because I prefer seeing out of both of mine. Go outside mate.
LoL! Doesn't take being clever for an accident to happen. That *is* why it's called an "accident". Ridiculous to assume that only Australians are that clever to avoid *accidents*.

Get yourself a proper wedge . That way you won't send a chip into your ladies eye. A proper wedge is less likely to chip. Also a splitting wedge is longer and thicker so you won't need two. Maybe Mum will get you one for your birthday. kind regards, L

The jacket goes well with the Aussie safety footwear lol
Hi Ken, I was silly doing THIS video in thongs. I should have been wearing safety boots for the video & then go back to what I usually wear.

Im not even that interested in cutting wood, i watched the entire video because Jeff tips are intoxicating to watch. good stuff :)
Love the immaculately ironed jeans with new flip flops - Aussie class
So nice to see good people out there gettin it done! splitting wood like a pro! Working smarter not harder. Kudos from NoLa...
Great tip. Love the safety jandals.
There is no such word as Jandal! Flip flop or sandal?
@@garystevens4303, Google begs to differ. But for those from the Western Isles, perhaps you'd prefer Thongs.

You still have all your fingers and toes, so you must be doing something right.
Thank you Jeff! I've got a lot of sycamore to split and this is very helpful and greatly appreciated.
I had to come in when I saw the flip-flops in the thumbnail. This guy must know all the in's and out's

This is the best Advice on CZcams!! I just split tons of eucalyptus hardwood. Also I split mines in Mexican huaraches.
Great idea with the saw cuts, Jeff! Glad you and Wilma are keeping warm. :)
Nice to know from a woman's point, the hammer method is much easier for us if the need arises. Thanks, Ann
your a legend mate! cheers... I'm sick and tired of pieces flicking up into my face! all the best Jeff
Nicely done Mate, but here in the US of A we recommend work boots over sandals when splitting wood. Stay safe.😮😢😮😊😊😊

I like the idea of putting the second wedge in next to the first. That seems like a good little trick.
Thank you sir. Just got two cords that I will have to split next spring after it dries.
As a postie in the uk I once did my round in flip flops. Walked 9 miles and ended up with burnt feet.

G'day Mike, thanks:)
Thanks for the tip, I got some really hard would I think I'll do the same thing with a chainsaw and start a Groove like you mentioned. 👍
Oh wow! I didn’t even think to use the saw! Now I can split all my logs
This man absolutely slays the pink.
Love the Aussie safety boots. What a champion
Great tips, thanks so much. Janice
Hi Janice, you're most welcome:) however I was wrong to do the demo in a pair of thongs. I'll wear some shoes next time.
I always wear my safety flip flops too! Nice video.
Very helpful! Thank you!
Top stuff mate!
Straight grained paperbark. Come on Jeff, try some twisted knotty blackwood mate 😂😂😂
Makes so sense. Thank you
Bloody brilliant. Never thought about using a circular saw!

I miss Australian timber and firewood!!
Amazing thank you; also flip flops lol
i like this guy he says its cold but hes wearing flip flops
I like the saw idea to start the split line. Not so much with the flip flops
Wood splitting tips from "9-Toe Jeff".
looks real cold, possibly 65 or 70°
Mate, you better put proper shoes on because if one of those metal wedges or piece of wood falls on your toe it's going to be real painful!
When an old dude wearing thongs teaches you how to split hardwood you stop and listen. Even if you already do it this way.
Good idea except that you shouldn't be using those "wedges" like this. Wedges are made of softer metal so that they won't chip. Do they have steel toe capped boots in Australia? She'll be right mate!
i have to say though Jeff, you have me cringing a bit doing all of that without better foot protection!
Protection from what?
The cut wood falling on his foot, the wedges landing on his foot... Those chunks landing on an unprotected foot can do some serious damage.
+Sansa Stark Australians are rather more clever than that. Have a look at the guy...Do you really think he got to that age by being stupid?
LoL! Doesn't take being clever for an accident to happen. That *is* why it's called an "accident". Ridiculous to assume that only Australians are that clever to avoid *accidents*.
Sansa Stark You're right. Kiwis are pretty good at it, too.
Here in America I hate trying to split gum and Jose Orange with a splitting maul you have to use a wedge or you'll beat yourself to death
I have a stump that's not in ground, do you think that I could use this way to break off bits of it and get rid of the darn thing?
And you can easly brake the head of axe by using hammer on it.
