A brief study on some common terrestrial moss species (Collecting and Identifying land moss)

Mosses are one of the most fascinating plants on our planet. They belong to the division of plants known as Bryophytes.
Bryophytes are non-Vascular (lacking conducting channels for transportation of water and nutrients), non-flowering and has no rot system.
They reproduce through spores and attaches themselves to the substrate with rhizoids instead of roots. Water and nutrients are absorbed directly into cells by osmosis.
Most mosses prefer acidic soil. However there are species which can do well in both acidic and alkaline soil. Some species also like to grow on calcareous (containing calcium carbonate or lime)
There are more than 10000 specie of moss in this world. In this video we will take a close look at some of the common terrestrial (land) moss species found in the tropical forests of South India.
