Making a Sword with THERMITE!

  • Join the science discord! / discord Usually Thermite is used to destroy things... Instead, I wanted to use it to make something to destroy things with.
    If you have never heard of it -Thermite is a mixture of Iron Oxide (rust) and Aluminum powder. When you ignite it a vigorous chemical reaction takes place which results in liquid iron. Its used industrially for welding metal, the military uses it to destroy enemy equipment, teachers use it for science demonstrations, and youtubers just melt stuff with it.
    I made a mold out of insulating firebricks, and set off the thermite over it to fill it with molten steel!

    Dude, your vids are great; but please stop leaving gas containers on the ground next to thermite reactions. No matter how low the risk may be (and I doubt it is seriously that low), we don't want to end up with a crippled, homeless, or dead Kevin. Take care! Keep making these great videos. Excellent idea btw. Very inventive and super interesting.

    • @ChozoSR388
      @ChozoSR388 Před 6 lety +4

      Metal is thermally conductive...the heat would be wicked away before the canister could burst...that's like saying that a cigar really can light a pool of gasoline...which it cannot...that only happens in movies. You see, most liquids have a low heat transfer coefficient, and gasoline is no exception...it seeps into the "cherry", and extinguishes the ember before the heat from the ember can cause it to ignite. Science.

    • @techemically
      @techemically Před 6 lety +26

      The metal can only adsorb (or conduct) a finite amount of thermal energy before the structure will begin to deform or break down. Your analogy breaks down somewhat in this scenario. Gasoline needs an appropriate mixture or fuel and air for combustion. A lit cigarette does not possess enough energy to overcome the activation energy required to start the reaction; and because it is a liquid the ember is quickly extinguished, leading to a rapid reduction in available thermal energy. Molten metal, on the other hand, need only to splash onto the metal container of propane in a sufficient quantity so as to compromise the structural integrity of the metal tank. A decent glob that splashes down on the tank and remains there for any length of time could very well create just such a catastrophic failure in the tank wall. You have to remember, we are talking about thermite reaction temperatures; not scarcely burning paper.

You never leave a blowtorch with a tank of compressed gas next to the tower of 2500°C burning metal you just lit with it, no matter how confident you are that your double layer plant pot and plaster crucible will not break.

    Thermite is a pyrotechnic composition of metal powder and metal oxide. When ignited by heat or chemical reaction, thermite undergoes an exothermic reduction-oxidation reaction. Most varieties are not explosive, but can create brief bursts of heat and high temperature in a small area.

    I reckon a neat project you and the Hacksmith could make is a giant rocket sled with Samurai Swords attached and cut some stuff in half!

    Glad to see you're back! Must be plenty of work to do on your new home. Looks like you have makeup under your eyes at 2:46. All that molted metal splashing your well protected legs. :-) Great video!

      Marian Cristian it wouldn't be hard to make with just a piece of flat bar steel! Just go to a scrap yard and find steel wide enough, and use an angle grinder and cut out your template pattern! :D
