Making a Sword with THERMITE!

- Join the science discord! / discord Usually Thermite is used to destroy things... Instead, I wanted to use it to make something to destroy things with.
If you have never heard of it -Thermite is a mixture of Iron Oxide (rust) and Aluminum powder. When you ignite it a vigorous chemical reaction takes place which results in liquid iron. Its used industrially for welding metal, the military uses it to destroy enemy equipment, teachers use it for science demonstrations, and youtubers just melt stuff with it.
I made a mold out of insulating firebricks, and set off the thermite over it to fill it with molten steel!

Every neighborhood needs someone like Kevin to instill how awesome science is to the kids.
so what your saying is every neighborhood needs a Doc Brown type to introduce kids/teens to science and get them into wacky/dangerous adventures that their parents are completely oblivious towards? XD

Dude, your vids are great; but please stop leaving gas containers on the ground next to thermite reactions. No matter how low the risk may be (and I doubt it is seriously that low), we don't want to end up with a crippled, homeless, or dead Kevin. Take care! Keep making these great videos. Excellent idea btw. Very inventive and super interesting.
Metal is thermally conductive...the heat would be wicked away before the canister could burst...that's like saying that a cigar really can light a pool of gasoline...which it cannot...that only happens in movies. You see, most liquids have a low heat transfer coefficient, and gasoline is no exception...it seeps into the "cherry", and extinguishes the ember before the heat from the ember can cause it to ignite. Science.
The metal can only adsorb (or conduct) a finite amount of thermal energy before the structure will begin to deform or break down. Your analogy breaks down somewhat in this scenario. Gasoline needs an appropriate mixture or fuel and air for combustion. A lit cigarette does not possess enough energy to overcome the activation energy required to start the reaction; and because it is a liquid the ember is quickly extinguished, leading to a rapid reduction in available thermal energy. Molten metal, on the other hand, need only to splash onto the metal container of propane in a sufficient quantity so as to compromise the structural integrity of the metal tank. A decent glob that splashes down on the tank and remains there for any length of time could very well create just such a catastrophic failure in the tank wall. You have to remember, we are talking about thermite reaction temperatures; not scarcely burning paper.
chozosr388 know how i learned that a guy i worked with flicked his cig into a 5000 gal gas tank scared the uck out of me but nothing happened.
I agree. That's the first thing I thought when he left it and the bucket caught fire. lol

That was the shortest collaboration ever. You were hardly in the video.

That was badass! Kudos for letting those kids see it. I hope they are inspired by you.

Dang, sweet result! Cleanest thermite pour I've seen outside of railroad welding
When I said I was up all night grinding and sanding I meant it! The steel got into all the nooks of the firebricks and it took forever to get flat!
I bet, and I'm sure it was super hard too.

Check the Collab Guy's channel (The Hacksmith). They collaborated by doing stuff in his video - in this one he was literally just putting in an appearance, for advertising.

4:20 I love how you usualy manage to do amazing and potentially dangerous ideas safely, however that was a genuinely dangerous mistake. You never leave a blowtorch with a tank of compressed gas next to the tower of 2500°C burning metal you just lit with it, no matter how confident you are that your double layer plant pot and plaster crucible will not break.
Thank you for so many amazing videos and please continue producing similary wonderful and crazy ideas - just please be safe.
My favorite part about this is how excited/curious those girls r there so adorable 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Why do you keep leaving the propane cylinder on the ground near the thermite?
Thats a really good question

I’m so happy I stumbled across your channel! Some of the best content I’ve ever watched! You do amazing work!
if any of you are curous what the fricc thermite is:
Thermite is a pyrotechnic composition of metal powder and metal oxide. When ignited by heat or chemical reaction, thermite undergoes an exothermic reduction-oxidation reaction. Most varieties are not explosive, but can create brief bursts of heat and high temperature in a small area.
"A really big f*cking sword coming right up"

Good job on the sword, but here’s a tip, when you quench a blade you should use oil like canola oil or another type of quenching oil but other wise you did a very good job and I love what you do so keep on doing what you do.

Pokes thermite in shorts...jumps from cold soup. Love it!
The difference in crystal size is actually a really cool and very fundamentally important principle in geology. Using nitric acid to reveal that on the sword was really cool!

2 suggestions: you should add some flux to control the gassing , and you should cut a vent into the mold, connected to the bottom, to allow air to escape.
8:57 the dog is like oh my lord!
Absolutely awesome. Love your channel, bro.
This whole video sounds like the questions on a math test being read out loud. 😆
The dog was a bit scared😂
8:48 "the wood thing"... I think it's called a stump lmao
hopefully you had the the most fun with the sword keep the job up!
also make more of these type of video
8:20 that cut surprisingly well for the thickness of the blade and swinging with your shoulder.
...and without even realizing it you may have just inspired 3 kids to enter a STEM career.. they looked completely engaged. nice work! :)
It's more of an arts and crafts demonstration than engineering. Maybe if he pulled out a whiteboard halfway through.
Would be cool, but I very much doubt it. People also dont get magicians because they are amazed or even participate in a trick...
Chris N STEM? lol what

Hey, where'd all your metal go? Termites?
No no, termites eat wood. It was Thermite.

So cool of you to get the young ones involved and excited about science. We need more everyday educators that excite the youth about science and math. Awesome!! Subbed and sharing!
Hey dude love the video!! Thermite never fails to entertain us! Keep up the good videos, I see ya put in a lot of effort into this one and you really can tell how awesome it is! Cool vid!
This is so cool :) Thanks for the video!
3:41 leaf was like "he- hey I uhh saw you over here recording uhh can I be in a video?"
When you mix fuel, metal oxide and metal powder in just the right way, it burns at 2000 degrees Celsius. Hot enough to cut through nearly any barrier known to man. Throw some C4 into the mix, and you've got one hell of a combination.

I was just thinking about channels I haven’t seen content from in a while and one of the firsts I though of was Backyard Scientist as he’s one of my favorites. I don’t know why I just had an urge and feeling to check his channel and lo and behold he had uploaded a video less than an hour ago. Perfect time to check lol.
Remember: its not a thermite, it is a military sparkeler
