Do Not try to charge a LiPo Battery like this!

  • Join the science discord! / discord This is what happens when you ignore the warnings on a Lithium (LiPo) Battery.
    First I tried Disassembling the battery to learn about it. Then I tried shocking the battery with a tesla coil. Surprisingly that did not work, so I connected it to a car battery to overcharge it and it worked great. Of course, by working great i mean it caught on fire. Finally I incinerated the battery with a 30W infrared laser in a fishtank filled with 100% pure oxygen.

    About 40 years ago I worked in a Navy R&D facility that started using some of the very earliest prototype lithium batteries which were made by GTE. I don't remember the exact chemistry but it was a double D size that was 3.6V/10Ahr. Massive capacity for the day. Turned out that GTE never tested the proto batteries for what happens if they got shorted. Since we were going to be putting the batteries in things that would be in salt water, we did. They EXPLODED with a force equivalent to 1/3 stick of dynamite. GTE later solved that minor testing oversight. I believe they put a compound into the mix which impedes the rate of discharge so they won't explode. I believe that's true for most (all?) lithium batteries. Now they can just overheat and catch fire.

    You cannot charge a lithium battery via a tesla coil because of the floating voltage. The voltage of tesla coil is high but the circuit just isn't complete. There would be no current flow and no overcharge. To actually overcharge a battery charge it fully, then connect it to an unregulated DC power supply. The battery would heat up and swell. That's when you know that you have done it right.

    • @chronically_late
      @chronically_late Před 5 lety +3

      Considering it's a Tesla coil you can touch with your bare hands, I don't expect there to be much current that you could actually charge a batterie with anyway. Even if it would have been setup correctly.

    • @BHAVYAMATHURBEE
      @BHAVYAMATHURBEE Před 5 lety +1

      Never made an argument on energy transfer. I simply said that it is not how a battery can be charged. Trust me I'm an engineer.
      Another thing, believe it or not tesla coils like van de graff generators don't provide any current. A HV transformer simply doesn't have current delivering capacity at low power high voltage scenarios.
