When he was England captain he used to make the team listen to the Stranglers on the way to the stadium on match days.
I met Stuart Pearce in a Pub in Stapleford about 20 years ago.... We had a chat about our mutual love of the Stranglers, then I was at Rock City watching them in Notts and he came up to me and remembered our conversation... Absolutely top bloke, he is perfect in this video. Brilliant. x

I'm about a mile away from Stapleford. Spent many a formative evening in the pubs on Derby Rd in the early 90's. H+J was always a good pub. Pavillion wasn't too bad for the "New' Pub and the Chequers was handy if you were waiting for a bus to go into Nottingham (if you were really lucky and they knew you, you could get them to serve you out of the window at the bus stop) memorable night in Stabbo when England lost to Germany in 1990.....didn't stop long as it all kicked off after the final whistle.

I absolutely agree. "This Song" was written by Mathew Seamarks, but the Stranglers have added some lyrics and really made it their own. It's a great album.

Jett Black was about 40 when he started the band, and between him and Vi Subversa (The Poison Girls), who was even older when she started her name, I've got plenty reason why I'm as old as I am and haven't given up on being a musician.
@JET was 35 when he met Hugh, by the time the stranglers were rgestered on 11th Sept 74 he had just turned 36..
Over 50 years old (the band that is) and still producing songs as powerful and fresh as this.
And they're not rated as the greatest band ever.
When those keys kick in at 2.03 and you remember just what a fantastic musician we had in Dave.

From someone who hasn't noticed The Stranglers for decades, this is a great song with fine lyric-writing, and the video is striking.

I remember seeing stranglers live in Edinburgh playhouse, big in America tour and I was hooked, played with a band called Mal Deutschland, totally mesmerising with greenfield s carnival like doors 60s keyboard sound and John jacques burnells pounding bass lines and Bruce lee Kung fu kicks, and even jet black keeping the drum beat within it and Cornwall s gruff yet melodic voice-4 musicians playing off each other and the sound was phenomenal
Watching this makes me feel a little bit of what it must have been like to be in the punk scene in the 70s & 80s. Brilliant song, brilliant video. Can we get Stuart Pearce a full-fledged movie acting career please?

Had the new album delivered this morning....now thats why he is god of the bass...a smashing album i drove an extra 3 junctions just to hear it all again..best album since Norfolk coast...great tracks amazing guitars from baz...the best band ever???your dam right....fly straight mr g...never be forgotten and the times at the windmill inn.
The Stranglers were the first proper band that I had ever seen, they were on doing a Tour for the British Forces out in Bosnia. They came to our Camp in Tomislavgrad in 1997, along with a four piece Dance Troop and a Comedian that started of well and then ended up a bit naff. It was the Highlight of the Tour for me. Still have photographs somewhere.
Pearce was already my biggest hero. And now The Stranglers are my new favourite band :-)
