They jumped on the punk bandwagon, adjusted their look and lyrics and hey presto! A band that was perfect for the times. "Tell ya what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna make love to a water rat or two, and raise up a family.... Ya know they'll call em? (No What?) Their gonna call em the survivors, know why? "........ 'cuse they're gonna survive! Yes one of my favorites too. Excellent song when I'm running.
I'm glad you said that SMarkalet. I've said elsewhere that you could always tell The Doors and The Stranglers as soon as you heard the keyboards. It distinguished them from everybody else.
Hemos pensado lo mismo. Especialmente por "Princess of the Streets", que es la que más me gusta del disco. Yes. I like "Princess of the Streets" more than the rest. I appreciate in this song an influence of The Doors.
Story I read. The Stranglers were a very popular Pub group, doing a lot of covers. They were asked to open for Patti Smith Group on their first British performance. Their minds were blown. They knuckled down and began writing and changed their direction, which gave us THIS Stranglers sound that I love to this day.
Seen them two weeks ago and they still sound musically as if they have just dropped in from another planet compared to everything else that was around then and especially now, 15 year old grandaughter is now a huge fan after hearing this album, Stranglers tours still highlight of this 60+ guy's year, "50 Years in Black" and still counting
A magnificent truly awesome album . It has to stand as one of the most timeless magical pieces of music to ever be written , what a work of musical artistic genius
This album fell between Airfix models and discovering girls. Girls won. I know every lyric to this album. Glorious, menacing music ! Gawd bless the (original) Stranglers, pre-the loss of Hugh Cornwell !! Songs of my youth. The best album ever.
I can still remember hearing Grip, Princess of the Streets, Hanging Around, etc. coming in on a Philips transistor radio and on our old Bush wireless. It would have been Stuart Henry's programme Street Heat on Radio Luxembourg and of course John Peel on BBC1. If anything, the songs sounded even better as they faded in and out on medium wave, being drowned out every 10-20 seconds by Spanish football matches! Never imagined I'd still be listening to them almost 45 years later, on a computer of all things!
I saw the Stranglers at the 688 Club in Atlanta. They were playing borrowed equipment since their stuff had been stolen or something. It was still a great show. I like them to this day.
Somebody mentioned Black and White and I checked it out. How have I missed this band including friends that love PUNK. I told a co worker and he is big time hard core punk, but never heard of this incredible band. The internet can be a wonderful place when people share information. Thanks, and will pass on the Birthday Party to you all!
My dad was into 10cc, ELO etc. and on Saturday mornings would blast "the second sitting (for the last supper)" and "evil woman" etc. I saved for weeks to buy this album and persuaded him he needed to play it instead. He became an instant fan from then. ✌
Fantastic album. Exceptional creativity, very specific in the beginnings of punk rock and in the world of rock music in general. Unforgettable and difficult to repeat. Thanks to the amazing musicians!
I remember being at a Tull concert (Portland OR fall 1990) and my ex wife and I were digging that they were playing the Stranglers on the PA pre show. Love these guys!
Glasgow Apollo 1977-78😁.............just epic memories. The songs live on and will for ever!! "Walking on the beaches lookin at the peaches"😁...... legendary - wouldn't even be allowed on air today because of all the SNOWFLAKES.
The Stranglers kind of bridged the gulf between prog and punk. At least for me. Always thought it was a false opposition but these guys proved it. Short, punchy tunes but these boys had their chops.
Imagine when I was listening to this album as as a teenager my dad was was slapping buddy holly and the platters on the record player. I thought what's this old shit?! Now this is the old shot except I'm a lot older than my dad was at the time!
Only by your message I realized he is gone. Perhaps not the best drummer in the world, but a strong foundation under a legendary band and definitely good enough for the job. RIP Jet Black
Isn't it incredible... and those lyrics! At the risk of drawing some kinda parallel, an absolute Bass n percussion-driven scorcher is this crisp and heavy favourite - Television Addict by The Victims: czcams.com/video/6hsBQjPO2-o/video.html
The next 4! Heroes, Raven and Men in black and La Folie..are all absolute classsic albums with every track brilliantly fitting a story....after that albums ups and downs but still with some amazing songs

Got introduced to punk after purchasing Even In The Quietest Moments by Supertramp. New friend and a new perspective. Great fun! These guys were in the mix. What a roster of tunes from GB. I'll never hit easy listening again to be sure. Sorry about Jet and Dave but I must say that strangely it doesn't quite feel like they've gone anywhere.
New wave comes after punk... Many variants like Gary Newman ... but the Stranglers were in at the start touring withRamones so they can’t really be new wave.. actually for many UK teenagers at that time the Stranglers were the reason many of us identified as punk.. their fans pogoed and spat and strange little girl was totally punk dressed see video. Yes they were “punk plus” as JJ suggests.. something better change, straighten out and peaches are pretty pure punk by any standards and everything else is a plus.
@@marcusliddington2035 - Further from 'new wave' than from 'punk'. Good musicians with 'punk' lyrics and 'rock' sound, does that sound like 'Punk-Rock' to you?!
Back then I was 16 when this came out. I hated when critics said the band is too much doors-like or even copy.. but today I have to admit, there is similarity yet they've got own style. Fu...n fantastic still. What an opening track!
I remember a mate playing Peaches to me and I thought initially, yeah ok. Then I heard Hanging Around and was blown away - didn't initially twig it was the same band. Life long fan since. Feel old now, but my daughter is a big fan so their legacy will carry on. And so it should as they are incredibly underrated.

My gran bought this for on my 13th b-day so long ago
I was 10 years old when my eldest brother bought this album. Have been Stranglers' fan since.
First time hearing these guys. First impressions are kinda like The Doors got heavy and into punk. Nice.
Here too and good call. That IS how this sounds!
edit-with a touch of Iggy Pop.
@Evan Hodge hehe true dat! I love the Doors but I would also add without the pretentiousness 😛
Good comparison. The Doors. Spot on. Listening for the first time in decades. Totally fresh
This is music 🎶 stranglers forever ❤❤❤❤
So bloody different at the time and so bloody different now an artistic masterpiece
Down in the Sewer is a classic exit for this LP. They don't make them like they used to.
Story I read. The Stranglers were a very popular Pub group, doing a lot of covers. They were asked to open for Patti Smith Group on their first British performance. Their minds were blown. They knuckled down and began writing and changed their direction, which gave us THIS Stranglers sound that I love to this day.
Btw. The latest, 2022 album is a FANTASTIC return to form. Check it out.
I felt like I was missing something. It was this Album 🖤
Down in the Sewer blew me away when I bought this album in the late 70’s Absolute perfection. Bass and keyboards unrivalled to this day.
it still sounds fresh
I agree, though some of their other songs like golden brown sound quite british
What a classic my all time fav band absolute classic album my first album bought thank you the stranglers
From 1977 till 83 were my ACID years,I'm so so glad it was the best years for music aswell.
61 now and glad I experimented in those years
all these years, 77 since, listening to Stranglers and I have just now appreciated what an amazingly good drummer was JET
Incredible Album
My favorite album of all time I've been playing it since I was 11. Fucking classic.
This is utterly epic!😁 Great writing and playing!😁 So full of character!😁😚😀
Superb album and down in the sewer is without doubt one of the greatest pieces of music ever written
No te preocupes! Solo disfrutarlo! No importa a que los demás piensen
@@andracelt66 no es lo que piensen los demás, es no tener con quien compartir el gusto ;(

If i had to pick my best album of all time this is it. always has been since i saw the stranglers at leeds in 1977. still listen to it often
Outstanding album and has my fave Stranglers song on it, "Goodbye Toulouse"
8 months later , you will no doubt have a new fave Stranglers choon, it gos like that mate
If you haven't heard their full version of Walk On By you haven't lived.
Одна из немногих групп которая смогла сделать свой звук и музыку
The Doors and Blue Oyster Cult mixed with punk and some other unknown ingredient . Exceptional.
Great Album!
I had always heard this was a great record ....but....wow ... brilliant
The solos is so very The Doors, got this Light my fire vibe !
Bought aged 13enjoyoling still aged 57.a triumphant debut album.🥰
My dad was into 10cc, ELO etc. and on Saturday mornings would blast "the second sitting (for the last supper)" and "evil woman" etc. I saved for weeks to buy this album and persuaded him he needed to play it instead. He became an instant fan from then. ✌
The greatest debut album ever, easily. Every track is a masterpiece and the sound? wow.
The Doors
@@doncar9 ....were never this good. ;-)
The Doors are one of my favourite bands, but Stranglers are still better
Had the pleasure of seeing them in 1981 at Bristol Locarno, one of the best gigs ever!
We listened to this day and night, amazing first album.Remember when music was brilliant?
Fantastic album. Exceptional creativity, very specific in the beginnings of punk rock and in the world of rock music in general. Unforgettable and difficult to repeat. Thanks to the amazing musicians!
One badass album
Sweated at 2 gigs at Guildford Civic Hall. The second had seats, they were soon moved! Top album, top band❤️
Absolutely classic album my personal favourite tracks are Peaches and Ugly
Got this album back in77 blew me away still the bollocks
The Stranglers kind of bridged the gulf between prog and punk. At least for me.
Always thought it was a false opposition but these guys proved it. Short, punchy tunes but these boys had their chops.
good observation as it seems quite proggy with its keyboard use and variety sometimes within songs
Fork' this Album is amazing so complete every song sublime' long live Dave' and Hugh Who!!@!!!
A masterpiece. No other word for it
Prefer Black and White.
Both masterpieces
Imagine when I was listening to this album as as a teenager my dad was was slapping buddy holly and the platters on the record player. I thought what's this old shit?! Now this is the old shot except I'm a lot older than my dad was at the time!
These guys are a real diamond in the rough!
A great set of songs to have stuck on repeat.
💎👌🏻 🔁
RIP Brian John Duffy ⚘️
Only by your message I realized he is gone. Perhaps not the best drummer in the world, but a strong foundation under a legendary band and definitely good enough for the job. RIP Jet Black
Hanging Around has been my favourite since it was released ! dx6
Isn't it incredible... and those lyrics! At the risk of drawing some kinda parallel, an absolute Bass n percussion-driven scorcher is this crisp and heavy favourite - Television Addict by The Victims: czcams.com/video/6hsBQjPO2-o/video.html
@@JulesN580 Yes! Excellent call.. never thought of that before.
Timeless. Superb album.
It was a good year to be 12.
Every song is kin quality. My young me and my older me share the same buzz. Stunning LP
Amazing, Amazing LP! Still stands up in 2021, as did the next two at least! dx
The next 4! Heroes, Raven and Men in black and La Folie..are all absolute classsic albums with every track brilliantly fitting a story....after that albums ups and downs but still with some amazing songs
Hugh Cornwell, The Stranglers overlooked and very, VERY underrated guitar player!!!
Not by me. Saw them in Berkeley CA 81. They were awesome!
Total Quality ,I used to keep playing Peaches on the jukebox at my local when I was a kid of 17 yrs ,I couldn't get enough of it ,or the reaction of the squares who disliked it so much ha ha ,Happy Daze ,Love Stranglers early work.
Always loved this soooooo much. And not one blasted ad. Take my hat off to you
Comes off as a bright charming sort of The Doors album/vibe at the start here.
Can't say why exactly but the album cover is also fantastic!!
The best punk album.
@Christophe Thibault Me too. I had this album. Second to Sex Pistols
They were new wave, not punk...for a start, they were all excellent musicians!
not punk - it's psych' in disguise.
Few years ago I picked most of the stanglers albums from fleamarkets for stupid easy & cheap. Nuclear device is also a massive tune.
