What a fun shopping trip. I love how you caption everything, US dollar, what you're thinking or getting. My eyes 👀 got huge when I saw all those yummy bento. 😍 thank you for taking us shopping.
I wish there were bento and rice balls in my area of the USA. But no, the "fast food" selections here are all junk and expensive on top of that. The Kit Kats in this video, the equivalent here is more expensive. The closest to bento here is one Japanese restaurant (who mainly focuses on sushi) offers "bento lunches" but they kind of such and a very small selection of mostly American-themed bento. No rice balls anywhere. Sushi is kind of popular, but I think these places are totally missing out on a lot of potential profits. If they offered genuine bento lunches for a reasonable price, with the right advertising, they would make a killing.
To convert yen to usd think of yen has cents so 100 yen would be 1 dollar. Just move the decimal two to the left. Its jot exact obviously 1 usd would be more like 120 yen but yeah

I love how neat and tidy Japanese are. Really reduces my OCD.
weirdshibainu if you think that’s something...omg, the whole huge metropolitan city of Tokyo is absolutely spotless!
Ahh but it increased my anxiety when we had a Japanese student living with us!! Felt like I couldn’t relax!! And I’m not a slob!
Yes they are☺
All markets in any country are neat and tidy, don’t be so dramatic
@@tekkenfan01 Then you haven't traveled. Go to Detroit sometime
When I went to a grocery store in Japan, there's this catchy song that plays every time I go to the fish area.
Maguro, maguro, maguro, maguro.. Holy hell, it's still stuck in my head.

Wow, some of those prices are incredibly inexpensive! Yes, a few items like peaches were much more expensive than the U.S., but stuff like seafood and tofu is a lot cheaper than it is here.
Tofu here is around $4-$5 for regular tofu and a couple dollars more for organic.
That's crazy, I bet I could eat super frugal if I lived there with less food waste.
Inexpensive! The fresh produce is very fresh
@Victor Bălaj Where I live in the USA, most of the produce is more expensive than what is shown in this video. Those "expensive grapes" are essentially top quality. A similar amount of sub-prime grapes here is easily $10.
Victor Bălaj as I said in my post, the produce is more expensive than most U.S. prices, but the tofu and seafood are way cheaper than I can find them here.
It's dangerous for me to go to the market! I would buy everything! Lol. 👍😎

I like Japanese super markets because so many things are sold for 1 person meals, over here in the US everything is “family” size, so much of my food(vegetables) go to waste because I just can’t eat them all that fast.
I can’t believe how fresh and cheap the vegetables and other items were. Amazing! And the wide variety of cheap bento was eye opening. Thanks for letting us see this.
some of it. $3.00 for a quarter of a watermelon? 2.5 for a peach? Thats not a deal
@@withonelook1985 The peach I figured would be high, but honestly sliced watermelon where I live is expensive even when in season. It'd be that price or higher. It's usually cheaper to buy a whole watermelon & throw away what you can't eat or find a neighbor to give some to. That's usually what we do.
So where do you live?
1$ for an onion?😨
lol japan is actually known for having outrageous prices on many vegetables and fruit so....
Nice filming work! You gaves us enough time to look at the packages and see the prices. And you didn't whip the camara around and get us dizzy, like so many grocery store tour videos.

I live in the state where Walmart started and is headquartered. It is now a company policy to prioritize local produce. I've been to stores in my area that may even have a photo of and information about the farm where the produce was grown. It's nice to see the consistency in focus between these two branches of the company.
All the produce in my local Walmarts are far from local. Luckily, there is a grocery store chain in the same city that does get all their produce locally and the quality is far superior to that of the produce at my local Walmarts.

It's funny, I hate grocery shopping, but I don't mind watching other people food shop. The prepared food sections were making REALLY hungry!!! Thanks for taking us along.
I was actually surprised. The prices aren't as eye-watering as I expected. They are cheaper than Sweden and almost on par with the UK - only fruit was very expensive.
Imported apple cost as much $5.00

DAMMM Natto only 50 cents. I pay over $2 at my large asian market here in Las Vegas. Tofu is $1-$1.50 That's a huge furikake section. I would buy at least 1 of all of those. Those prices are super cheap. Those are some GOOD prices at that store.

I cant get over how cute shinichi's avatar for his youtube channel is. i just love it when he happily walks along with satoshi to a grocery store or any store for that matter ❤️️
Wow I'm shocked - it's cheaper than most Toronto supermarkets. I expected food prices to be far higher in Japan. We live far in land so seafood is expensive here. That pack of shrimp would be more than $10 here (about $8 US or so I think?). The scallops would probably be closer to $15 or $20. Thanks for posting the price equivalent, saves me a google! It's so interesting to see what average life is like for people on the other side of the world.
Love these videos! Something awesome about people that can film their experiences without having to scream and be super cool all the time. Keep 'em coming!

Being a native of Texas and having been a former employee of Wal-Mart I can definitely see the layout is similar to those local Wal-Mart here in the states!! Stock well with plenty of products that's affordable and a vast variety to chose from!! I could see myself doing my 🛍 here if I lived in Japan!! Awesome Video!! Thanks 4 Sharing :)😃🇺🇸😃
I enjoyed how calm of an environment this supermarket is.
I really love those ready to eat prices, looks so much healthier and decent filling. Also those KitKats! A bag would easily cost $5++ in Canada... I would stay in the store forever after seeing all those bento varieties and cheap prices lol. Awesome viddd

I was at the one in Sugamo. Loved the slection, but they closed due to the typhoon and was practically empty of supplies when they reopened.
Very nicely organised grocery market, but it bugs me that there's so much plastic used! Like things are pre-wrapped for you and you cannot go for a no-plastic choice (not saying that other supermarkets elsewhere are doing better)...
Japanese supermarket are so so nice
I was just thinking about the size of American grocery carts compared to the ones in this video and how they wouldn't even fit down the aisle of that store...
@@L14M What an ignorant comment. They have plenty of those, too.
@@L14M well can't argue.
I imagine most Japanese people live near the store and don’t have to travel so far as Americans in rural areas who have to stock up for longer periods of time.
@@Marys_Life_64Not an ignorant comment. Only 3.6 percent of Japanese have a body mass index (BMI) over 30, which is the international standard for obesity, whereas 32.0 percent of Americans do. A total of 66.5 percent of Americans have a BMI over 25, making them overweight, but only 24.7 percent of Japanese.
The reason the carts in the USA are so big is that you are more likely to buy more with a bigger cart than a smaller cart and the stores want you to buy as much as possible. They are intentionally big to try to make you buy more. Some grocery stores have smaller carts, but even they are pretty big.
Can’t wait to see the bakery!
As a hypersensitive germaphobe I love how quiet and clean it is there. I hate how loud and crowded most stores are here in America

Many things have to be shipped there. That in itself makes it expensive. If you want scary watch the Somers in Alaska shopping trip to Barrow, Alaska. The Charmin toilet paper price will scare you. Everything literally has to be flown in & that's expensive.
@@Marys_Life_64 yes I seen lots of grocery shopping videos there where bread costing 6 dollars or water 26 dollars and etc.

I don‘t care about the plastic. Germany shouldn‘t limit their citizens, while the rest of the world doesn‘t care about the environment...
@@stielimusterman3066 Someone has to start. But I get what your point is.
Germany and Europa try to save the environment while the US and other countries don't give a shit...

The prices are sooo much better than here in Canada! And the produce looks top quality! I'd love to go grocery shopping in Japan.
Some products are really expensive. On the other hand some where extremely cheap. In Germany you would pay for the Fishsteak like 4 more times.
And which we don't have this much in Germany (and even more less in the organic stores I usually go) are those tons of plastic. I really try to dodge plastic waste and vegetables covered in plastic. I would have hard times to avoid it there I think (there are surely organic stores too in Tokyo/Japan)
I'm german too and I recognized the tons of plastic too. I would prefer shops with less plastic.
True. But cheaper vegetables and fruit comes in a plastic bag. Buying loose produce usually is more expensive.

Seiyu is my favorite supermarket when I visit in Japan
Love, love, love this video. Why do I not remember watching it? Around a year from now, hubby and I should be in Japan in time for our 5 year anniversary. To save money, we should get a place with a kitchen, eat two meals per day inside and eat one nice meal in a restaurant. Shop at Saiyu, Life or one of your other great supermarkets, and stock up on plenty of snacks. I always like to have a plan, but then I deviate from it if comfortable.
When I saw the price for the sliced watermelon🍉😲 and the assorted grapes🍇!😲 Yikes!
Wow Japanese Supermarket👍👍👍
I always hear people saying Japan (especially Tokyo) is "expensive". Well, either Tokyo is not expensive or where I live is expensive as prices for similar stuff here are similar and apparently, in Tokyo, some items are way cheaper than here. The tofu, for example, is about $4-$5 a block here. A little more for the organic. The "fresh" vegetables are more costly where I am and are of much poorer quality. I bet the pay in Tokyo is higher than the average where I am in the USA. All in all, I say it seems that Tokyo is not expensive, at least when it comes to food. I bet housing isn't cheap. Oh, and another example, at 10:05 that same kind of ready-made thing in the only local place that would sell such (they don't sell that specific one but do sell similar) would charge about $10 for it.
Much of the variation and perception in prices has to do with the exchange rate. In the early 2010s it was around Y80 = $1 while in the past few years it's been above Y100. That makes Japan significantly cheaper from a US perspective.
I love this channel it makes me happy x I miss Japan so much x

I love watching these,a bit of everyday life in Japan which to me is enjoyable. Very handsome presentation.
It's funny how this goes against my usual "stereotypes" of food in Japan; When I imagine grocery shopping there, I think smaller stores with higher prices than this place. But this place is pretty similar in size, selection, and price to where I shop here in Minnesota, from what you showed.
Very fun, interesting, and educational.
Japanese prices are cheaper. But given that English speakers can't get jobs in means you have to be extremely rich to live there.
Fruit is expensive.
Very enjoyable video. To see other countries grocery stores is always fascinating to me. The prepared food section looked incredible. I will make sure I am close to a grocery store when I travel to Japan so I can try all of the prepared meals. Chicken Katsu curry! Whoo....them sweet 'taters are pricey. Very nice Satoshi leg shots. So handsome!
I love these supermarket videos! When I do get to Japan, I will continue to eat well. With the choices of seafood being as they are and lower costs I will be even better off health wise. Yes! I am glad that chicken thighs are not popular and that will keep the prices down. The prepared meals are very reasonable for the nights you don't want to cook. Japanese KitKats in the U.S. are $6.00 USD with sales/consumption tax.
Why do I torture myself watching these wonderful videos since it is going to be awhile before I arrive? 😭 Not to worry! I will continue viewing.
Until next time!
Whenever I travel abroad with friends or family, I always make it a point to them to visit several supermarkets to see what kinds of produce/products that are on sale and if possible, will sample them while I’m still on vacation. I really liked this video, I’ve never been to Japan and currently can’t go because of the pandemic. So this video is oddly satisfying for me 🥲
