      I love these types of shopping and cooking videos! I noticed that a lot of what you bought was packaged small compared to the US- but as a single person I think I’d prefer it. Groceries are pretty expensive here too.

    • @eblob88
      @eblob88 Před měsícem

      Agreed. Based on how expensive each and every ingredient is, it may seem more feasible to eat out instead

    • @aaron_333
      @aaron_333 Před měsícem +1

      It is getting to the point where buying ingredients to cook will come close to the price of eating out. Of course, it would be healthier as you control the ingredients that go into your meal.

    I love that you're making cooking vids! That's awesome, especially since everyone needs to start reducing eating out so much due to inflation. One suggestion: the reason you're finding it so difficult to perform knifework is that you're seated, and your targets are at chest-level, instead of hara-level. Maybe consider standing when using your knife, or get a cushion or sitting pad to elevate your arms when you're wielding your knife? Did you ever get any of the houchou from your trip to the factory?

    All the prices in Japan are so much cheaper than the US. 😭 Those giant container of strawberries would cost us $8 right now in Seattle. So jealous of how beautiful the produce are!

    • @slothsliketohang
      @slothsliketohang Před měsícem

      Man, that’s rough. I went to Seattle last year before an Alaska cruise and it was pricey. I live in the Northeast and those strawberries would cost around $2.50-$4 a lb, depending on the store. I found the Trader Joe’s in Queen Anne near our Airbnb to have reasonable prices for the area. I actually looked to see what strawberries cost at that location it says $3.50/lb for non organic.

    • @ucc930ml
      @ucc930ml Před 11 dny

      Here country, Japan, is a strawberry powerhouse, though not as large as America. However, consumption increases during the hot summer months, and domestic strawberries alone are somewhat insufficient to meet the demand. For this reason, Japan (always) relies on imports, and America has the highest import price and volume, accounting for 80% of the total. The import volume of fresh strawberries exceeds 3,000 tons, which is about 2% of the domestic harvest. The import volume of frozen strawberries fluctuates between 25,000 tons and 30,000 tons. According to information, in America, strawberries are mainly grown outdoors, have soil attached to them, and have little moisture, so they are mainly used for commercial purposes 🍓

    Save yourself money on herbs. Just grow them. It's super, super easy. As for the daikon, turn it into do chua (Viet quick pickles, awesome for sandwiches and salads). Onions, I go through at least 4 per week, but it depends on what you cook. Yogurt is also easy to make. Buy Greek yogurt and some milk. Mix and let sit in your oven. You can repeat the process ad infinitum to make endless yogurt. Olive oil is expensive because of the olive shortages in Europe. Most producers are also hoarding their yield to keep the price high.

    That was a fun trip to the supermarket 🙂. I liked the prepared meals you could get at the ones in my old Japanese neighborhood. Saved a lot of time and money. These prices didn't feel too different from where I'm living now in the US. Some things are more, and some things are less expensive, so it kind of balances out. The dishes you made all looked great! I'll have to try making some of them. I think I can get most of the ingredients here, but not in such great variety. I think most stores here have one, two, or three max varieties of tofu, for example. Same deal with miso. The local Whole Foods actually carries daikon, which I was happy to find. I used to make Caspian Sea yogurt at home. I remember my local Japanese markets carried it and you can actually just add a little to milk to start a new batch. It's a type of yogurt that you can make at room temperature, so it does't require any special equipment and is easy to make.
    My favorite way to prepare natto is mixed with a little soy sauce, a quail egg, and chopped spring onions 👌.
    Thanks for another fun vlog!

    In case you're wanting to save on yogurt, it's REALLY easy to make at home with just milk and some starter yogurt, especially if you've got an instant pot. I usually make some when I can't get through my milk fast enough.

    Hey Seerasan! Good vibes in your videos, I enjoy them after a long workday. Quick tip: You mentioned extra firm tofu and that you are ok with "plain" flavors... how about getting a Tofu Press? I struggled🙄 as well finding firm tofu, but now with the press I just have it ready every single day and add any flavor I want! 🤭. Hope your every day is a great day! 😊

    If you can tell what the vinegar/ dressing for raw shredded cabbage is called that I used to buy at the supermarkets in Japan then I will make all my friends subscribe to you 😂😭 it might be Chinese? 🤔

    Great idea showing us the cooking as well as the shopping after you asked us to vote on a topic. Question though: did you sit because you were filming? It looks so awkward…. I don’t think I could manage a knife very well. Maybe when I am too old to stand I will, but for now I’ll keep standing in the kitchen.

    I saw at least two of my favorite teas that I have imported every couple months… cost me much more than 8 bucks lol. Also if you’re gonna try mapo tofu, Mike Chen had my favorite recipe, Aaron and Clare have a really good one too!

    The prices are similar to those in Germany. The packaging is also similar, although in Germany the fruit is not packaged as heavily.

    The prices seem super high in Japan for how low the salaries are. And I’m in one of the most expensive cities in the US.
    I can get 32 oz of Greek Yogurt for under $3. The fancy brand is like $3.60.

      Yes, expensive for average people in Japan, we choose Bulgarian yogurt basically.
