    I absolutely adored this game. Way way better than the original and one of the best RPGs I've played in a long while! I finished 100%ing it a few days ago and I can't stop thinking about it.

    Thanks for the review, Mukluk! Watching you play this from start to finish was an awesome experience, and this review is an excellent summary of that 62 hours in 1/600th of the time you spent playing it. I'll be buying this on Switch to explore the world of Solistia soon!

    Gotta pick up 1st part of this game on Switch. It seems perfect to play it on that platform. The review itself? Just Perfect! Nothing that spoils the story, talking about good stuff. Thanks Muk :)

    im in love with this game and finally decided to do my first challenge run like with what i did to the first game, im going to solo the game with every character in one run, for example im gonna choose one character and i cant get a new one till i do the full story then once i get a new one i can only use the character, this repeats till i do it with every single one

    I finished this game after over 100 hours in and I have to say it was 100% worth it. All the side stories really help to immerse you into this world. And they sometimes span over multiple cities. It's a huge game and I definitely second the recommendation to spend 60$ on this game.

  • @DraygoKorvan

    One tip to significantly reduce the grind of both games. Pick 4 characters at the start and stick to them through the last story for each character, then completely switch your party to the other 4 (note that it is a game mechanic that you cannot remove your main character until you complete their story). You don't have to do this if you don't want to but it significantly cuts down on the grind. Note you can still do chapter 1 for all 8 characters doing this method as you meet them.

    • @AProperNoun
      @AProperNoun Před rokem

      Really even just cycling your characters around as you go is probably enough to keep people leveled, especially if you run into a cait or two on the way. I never had a level problem using all 8 characters as I went (though my main character did end up hilariously overleveled).

    I 100%ed this game in slightly under 90 hours, and my god it was worth it.
    Graphics are beautiful, the music is pretty much the best I ever heard in a videogame (and that bar was already set incredibly high by Octopath 1)
    And it took pretty much all of the things that were bad about octopath 1 and made them good.
    Overall, 100% recommend

      The music in Octo 2 is pretty sweet, but give a listen to Tenchu Stealth Assassin's soundtrack for Playstation 1. So long ago, but I consider it the best game soundtrack I've ever heard. I mean Tenchu was a damn good game on it's own, but that soundtrack...😍🌳🍂🌸🏯⛩️...so amazing to this day ❤

      I know this is a year late but I need to ask.
      He said there are some stories far worse then the others. Can you tell me which of them are? No spoilers, I just don't want to chose a character as my starting one only to realise their story is trash.

    Great JRPG. The battle strategy were interesting. and Some of the stories were quite good. Some suggestions for improvement:
    1. some dialogue was too long hold, C to skip...
    2. Would love to see enemy HP bars and names always on screen.
    3. For Keyboard play, some battle hotkeys would be awesome.
    4. A real time more accurate map would be cool.
    5. After level up, would be cool to see the stat improvements.
    6. All characters always available and gaining XP together.

    Nice review, I especially agree on the stories not being always at 10/10 level. But let me add some insight on one of the two flaws you mentioned, EXP sharing. That is a feature of modern RPGs to make them even easier for newcomers. But this game is heavily inspired by old school JRPGs, like the Final Fantasy games of the 16-bit era. Let´s take for example FFVI, that game first encouraged you and finally forced you, at the final dungeon, to make 3 parties of 3 characters each and (of course) did not offer any EXP share features. If you played always with the same group of characters, you would find yourself in trouble by the end of the game. Octopath Traveler 2 is not as cruel as that game, and gives you plenty of reasons for constantly swapping characters, also thanks to the job system. There are plenty of ways to make experience faster than those older games from which it takes inspiration. Therefore, if we consider no EXP sharing as a flaw, we should also consider all classic JRPGs of the 90s as flawed games in their mechanics. I personally think that a JRPG without some healthy grinding is too easy and, ultimately, boring. But it is a matter of taste of course.

    Surprise hit for me. I'm not big on turn based, not big on the endless stream of pixel games, and I am the person that skips every single dialogue and cutscene in nearly every game because all the writing post 2012 is godawful.
    But upon picking the samurai in this game I was immediately surprised by the refreshingly old school story. No redditor "self aware" humor where they have to jab at old school games the entire time. It just is what it is, and effort was put in to making the story cool.
    Really good, bright, colorful visuals with a 3d environment for your little 2d sprites. Picked up a second character and suddenly the entire theme changes, and again for the third, like 8 different themes for one game that are interwoven. Actually followed the story for once.
    First boot I played 3 hours in a row and I'm sure I'll be finishing the whole thing. Also the game seems made for a Steam Deck, chill out and play a refreshingly old school game including all the charm of the era, runs great of course, and you can take your time playing for that true lay on the couch and chill out experience.
    Get the demo, give it a try, it's really a surprise for me.

    Here's my problem...we own both games and got them when they were brand new. I got the first game on the Switch and even played it on our Series X through GamePass. I could not bring myself to finish it either times. I really don't care for the 8 separate stories because it feels like you're starting the game over and over again. By the time everyone is supposed to come together I get fatigued...and just bored with the whole exercise.
    Now, we have Octopath Traveler 2 for the PS5 but neither of us (fiancee and I) have brought ourselves to even open it. I really want to but if I have to go through the same play all the different characters from the beginning again....I don't think I am going to do it. It can stay on the rack of our giant mighty game collection and I can simply enjoy the idea of playing through it "one day."
    Addendum- A 60 dollar price tag is on the higher end of gaming? What? Spending 60 bucks for a AAA title from Square is cheap. Normally, our games go for a straight 70 dollar and up price.

      Well it’s not a game for you then. That’s the only answer. The graphics may be an attraction to you, but these kinda games are for people who enjoy these type of stuff, character and story focused rpg.

    • @Sinn0100
      @Sinn0100 Před 4 dny

      Well...no, I an a huge JRPG fan. I started back in 1986 with Miracle Warriors on my Master System and I have never looked back. There isn't many JRPG'S that I haven't played
      At any rate, the problem with this game is it basically forces you to go back to stone over and over again. You work your way out of the noob yard only to be forced right back in and it's just poor design. This kind of thing should not be an issue as it's one that has been solved for many years.

    • @King-2077
      @King-2077 Před 4 dny

      @@Sinn0100 again, it doesnt matter if you’re an jrpg fan. The game is still not for you. This game is a bit different than other games, it focused on 8 main characters, the purpose of going back to stone is mainly for just story purposes. The grind is a callback to many jrpgs back in the day. If you’re a really fan of classic jrpg like you said you are and played many, then you player games like saga frontier 1 & 2, which is kinda the same as this, focusing on different characters at different time and gets hard if you dont grind out especially if you start another character’s story. It’s not a bad design, it’s just the time of genre it is lol. So just because you didnt like it, doesnt mean it is a bad design. Some people think it’s a good design. In short, game is just not your cup of tea. And nothing I can say ot the game can do to change that.

    • @Sinn0100
      @Sinn0100 Před 4 dny

      @King-2077
      Uh-hu accept that every single element in the game is 100% based on JRPG's. From its combat to the very play mechanics used to introduce new characters has all been done in other JRPG's. The 8 branching story paths is little more than a gimmick designed to pad out the length of the game. Once all characters meet, it takes off like every other JRPG in the market since the genre's inception.

    I recommend this series but not for classical rpg newcomers.. I adore the Hd 2d style Triangle being my favorite but I don’t think SE should overdo it and use it for everything.. Just certain titles that way they come off as more special maybe storyline’s that eschew any iota of campiness..

    This is one of those games ive always wanted to play, but never really have the time to commit to it. I adored Fire Emblem: Fates and Bravely Default, but could never manage to finish them. So I know this game will just end up another "I loved it, but never completed it" title.

    Does it have more spells/skillz than in the 1st game? That's what I didn't like in the first one. It was just the same battles over and over again.
