  • An empty westbound coal train roars through the big rock cut at mile 32.0 with just one locomotive. It is the same train that I saw at 11:00pm the night before. Coal trains are quick to unload and return to the mine. This is because they have rotary couplers, and they use a machine on the dock to rotate several cars at a time to dump them.
    The time was 10:45 a.m.
    power was AC44OOCWM 8008
    number of cars was 147.
