  • Just awhile ago a friend of mine sent me a message with a few notes he played on his ukulele painted in blue... the beginning notes of " Dueling banjos" it was. The joke ...to challenge me with while he is far away on his sailing boat ... hope enjoying the unique seaside atmosphere. I am not that lucky and I can't do anything about it so I decided to clean the dust from my old five-string banjo. This year because of various reasons I missed the dates I planned for to visit the mountains as many years before. But I do not mind for I know that the mountain will call me when the time will come. I am sorry for I didn't manage to film new footage from the wild as often till now, to be able to edit and upload something fresh and new for my friends. Meanwhile I am spending the time here at home taking care about dogs and birds and fixing some details on my old motorbike. ... the toy that makes a man feel forever young... dreaming about riding it again some time soon, perhaps to the mountain like long ago on horseback.
The cover I am picking on my banjo here is the Richard Thompson's classic "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" close to Del McCoury's bluegrass version. The original tells the story about motorbikes and the times that are gone long ago.
Performed here instead of "Dueling banjos" for a friend of mine. Hope we'll join and play it together one day soon.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No ipak nije mi krivo jer znam da će me ta planina pozvati kad za to dođe vrijeme.

I rarely play the banjo, surely not as much as I used before. I pulled it out of the case, cleaned some dust from the fingerboard and under the strings and played that song deliberately on the first try without warming my fingers up. It is not perfect, next time it could be surely better ... anyway, I do not like perfection. The song about the motorbike.
The same day I started my 60 year old motorbike, after long time. The sound of its engine reminded me of some good old times, years that passed away long ago. Maybe it was such a moment, something just as good came to me to calm my soul.
Things changed ... we live in quite a different world today.
Thanks for watching. Take a time and check the rest of my uploads here,
hope you can find at least some worth watching. You are always welcome.

Recently, I came across that tune on this network and made my own version ...
played here with no warming up nor rehearsals
... the tune that reminded me on those years that are gone long ago, when there was no internet but other values were much more respected. Times changed and won't ever return... people changed a lot.
      Thank you for your comment.

I rarely play banjo because here today it is not as well accepted as it used to be when this music was almost even banned from the authorities. Now this old banjo mostly collects dust and my fingers do not fly without training or at least warming up. In fact, I deliberately uploaded this recording, imperfect ... played on the first attempt ... just to recall those past times as I mentioned in the description.
This cheerful instrument is often very pleasant to hear.

Oh Pavle, that was enjoyable and makes me think you should keep the dust off that five string Banjo forever. You have certainly not lost your touch as your fingers are as nimble as ever. Your friend in issuing this challenge while sailing should definitely catch up with you. I guess a Ukele and your banjo would be a wonderful story of music shared on YT. Anyway with the dogs and birds you definitely have your hands filled and when the mountain calls I think you will be more than ready. Nice takeoff on that motorbike too ha ha,

There are not many chances to join with people today and to sing or play ...
times changed ... people decided to live on quite a different way, today.
But my five string friend comes close to me just when I really need it ... and joins me when I am happy but knows how to deal with tears when they come.
This banjo is more than 30 years old and surely has enough experience. The same as that old motorbike. The Triumph Thunderbird ... almost sixty years old.
I always loved the sound of that engine. Tin filmed that shot on the end of my video this winter ... that toy obviously makes me feel younger when ever I hear her running. I rarely mention that but do not forget that I used to be the stuntman, besides.
I was born the same year mentioned in the title of the song ....
seems like those generations keep much more adrenaline in their blood if only their hear the sound of these old engines.
I am really glad you noticed and commented the takeoff ... we'll both remain forever young my dear.

You reminded me on my own case and how I searched for the sound of this type of banjo for years. I started playing similar picking style on guitar till once I have seen the banjo on TV. Some time later I found one and bought it but how to tune it and what the strings it needs was big problem for me. No one could help me.
Today it is easy for everyone who likes it ... internet offers what ever we wish.

Nice to hear from you again. For some time I wasn't able to keep the things needed for to continue my contacts in order as before. The PC equipment become a kind of obsolete in the time when everything gets "old" soon after you by it as new ... updates do not work nor are supported that long. I didn't manage to sort my huge archive that I planned to edit and upload. Hard work often with a few steps back so that I am lucky I turned back where I was. It is obvious that I will need new machine soon if I would decide to continue my work. Dealing with hardware and software I lost quite a lot of time ... and what is most important I canceled my trips to the mountains. It was far too warm summer so I am not that sorry for that. I prefer fall and winters and I really hope there will be a chance to travel to the wild as I used to many times before. I need that desperately if nothing than to be able to continue editing again.
Glad you like the video, this tune was just the first take of it what I described bellow when a friend was on his summer vacations challenging me to play that well known duel on guitar and banjo ... but over the distance using this network.
Joke it was, sure but nice idea. This unusual heat is almost over so hope we will join some day here at home and play that one for real.
Thanks Petra. You are always welcome.

Those days I used to play my banjo often leaning against the cage where wolf and my dog were kept together. It wasn't a prison but the only way for the wolf to be safe in and urban area. All my activities were directed towards the mountains ... and most of my earnings from working on film as a stuntman I spent on who knows how many trips to the wild. Playing that banjo they all felt my emotions ... a kind of happiness so they felt themselves the same. It wasn't always so simple to make the things work ... there were troubles, too just like it happens in our life. The worse was that I was always alone, even misunderstood and no one could help ...besides, Lik no longer accepted others because they were even afraid of him. I was quite aware of that.
Here is a bit of atmosphere from those days: czcams.com/video/tWBogYnEh4w/video.html
Even that motorbike still reminds me on those times no matter how hard it could be ... but I might say I enjoyed them. Those were a happy times.

    • @PavleBalenovic
      @PavleBalenovic  Před 4 lety +1

Oh yes. bluegrass guitar and five string banjo were my favorites since long ago.
"Auld Lang Syne" was played on the Gibson I had before ... "Vincent 52" and "Up 18 North" (also uploaded here) though are played on Gibson, too but the one I still own ... 40 years old five string. The motorbike ... I used to ride it since 40 years ago at least... my favorite one that remained after all the bikes I used to ride through my life. That's me in fact... perhaps the half of me that you didn't know.
It would be nice idea to make some uploads on my motorcycle riding and my professional occupation in general ... horses , trucks and all the stunts that can be done ... this is how I was making for living. I do not mention that almost at all because all the money earned I used to spend for nature, wilderness and wolves especially. People who know me often say that some remains of adrenaline from my work are still visible in my behavior ... like the Triumph take-of on the end of this video
Glad to hear from you again. Take care.
