I HATE HATE HATE this law. While I support law enforcement and wish them all safe travels, my issue is that this law forces people to merge in high speed traffic, dangerously close to other cars. I can't tell you how many times I am riding along lah dee dah in the middle lane and a Trooper is stopped on the shoulder ahead and everyone and their mother slides left into the middle lane, absolutely ignoring any following distance rule, and creating a dangerous situation where one error could create a massive multi-car pile up. And for what? If I am getting pulled over on the highway, I turn on my hazard lights (4 ways) on and wait until there is a safe spot to pull over, such as halfway on the grass. I want the Trooper safe. How about Troopers just follow a car and not light them up until they know there is a safe place to pull over? Also this ticket blitz targeting people who don't forcefully merge left and slow down is ABSOLUTE BULLSH*T. You want us to support law enforcement but you ambush motorists who are just driving right and staying safe, minding their own business.
I hope someone thought this law through completely and that data is being tracked to see if it is working. Changing lanes quickly and unexpectedly can cause crashes too.
They do not track anything, I am retired from FHP and I witnessed an incident in Miami on the Florida Turnpike where a car slowed suddenly and swerved over to obey the move over law and it caused several other cars to take evasive action and ended up with 7 cars spinning out of control, how none of those 7 cars hit anything is a miracle, another case that I know of was on Alligator Alley in Collier County (Naples Florida) where a car went to move over because a trooper had a car stopped on the side of the road but there was a car in the inside lane next to them so the car swerved back to the right and lost control of their car striking the left side of the car that was pulled over resulting in the death of a passenger in the rear seat of the pulled over car. I agree with this 100% but vehicles that are broken down and abandoned; no brake lights on or signals are not considered "stopped" correct? I dont have to change lanes unless there's someone actually with or in the car?
Correct. The language of the law states the vehicle must have warning or emergency lights activated. So that is hazards, amber lights, white lights, green lights and reds and blues. Generally, if it's flashing, move over. Otherwise you don't have to
good, keep issuing these tickets. too many police officers, tow truck drivers, and emergency response people are having their lives risked by careless drivers

So many damn vehicles on the shoulder you might as well not have a far right lane🤷♂️🤷♂️

NO regard for anything or anyone. Dented cars, banged up cars, no bumpers. Terrible. Everyone on their cellphones. So dangerous. You are risking your life every time you get into your car in florida. The worst drivers I have ever seen.
Tons of times near where I live there's been so many secondary collisions due to people not paying attention or moving over. Cops could be at one crash scene and bam somebody in a Tesla or BMW slam into the already crashed vehicles.
that seems like a pretty easy dismissal in court. “Your honor, by the time I saw the incident on the side of the road, I was unable to merge to the next lane because of conflicting traffic, and I did reduce my speed”(unless a officer clocked you).
Never make a left side approach on the freeway. Plus, you're standing partially in the roadway to shoot lidar/radar and on the white fog line and wirh your back to traffic lieutenant.
When the traffic is heavy and ppl start moving over for a broke down vehicle/officer, it sometimes ends up turning the hiway into a parkinglot. I'm sure you've been there: Driving just fine, but all of a sudden traffic hits the skids and in 3 car lengths, yer sitting dead still. You creep along for like a 1/4 mile, then, out of no where, traffic just starts going again! Look around, nothing, maybe a guy changing a tire if you're lucky.
Not good at all, and nothing to do with her being a girl, FHP allows promotions into supervisor positions way to fast, these people promote so fast they never learned how to be a trooper and now they are giving orders to troopers. It has been a disaster for years in FHP. You get some young kid who promotes quickly never learning the job and they are trying to tell seasoned troopers how to do their job and 99% of the time the young promoted trooper has no clue what they are doing. FHP has gone down hill over the years because of the liberal fast promotion system they have. You should have to be a trooper for a minimum of 10 years before you promote to sergeant, you should be a sergeant for 5 years before you promote to lieutenant and you should be a lieutenant for 5 years before you can promote to captain, promotions above captain could then be a shorter time, that would make sure you had seasoned people in supervisor positions who know how to do the job and not a bunch of young kids still in diapers trying to tell seasoned troopers how to do the job.
Unfortunately, humans still don't care about this mover law. When a road ranger is working, either disable vehicles or accident no-one move over and don't forget those individuals on the cells phone driving and texting, every department should enforce this law
Yes, if they have hazards or other warning lights activated or there's something like flares set. Otherwise you can treat it as if it's not there, but I'd still be careful since sometimes people's batteries die or something and they can't activate their hazards. If you hit someone you could still be found at fault depending on the circumstances
Then they shouldn't make a law where they have to pull over in a safe place, not in the highway. Therefore take the first exit and make it safer because the street is public
Federal law requires anyone working on an interstate to wear High-Vis gear. Tan uniforms blend in and the rear of police cars need to be marked the same as ambulances and fire trucks.
They are. Big red holographic stickers! There's also big bright blue & yellow lights! lol. That's only because workers are usually farther away from equipment & safety lights where as troopers are very close.
I do that already. I move over for any car I see on the shoulder with their blinkers on. I'm trying to protect everyone because everybody's safety matters. Just remember when they pull you over they are putting your and their life on the line.
Standing in the middle of the highway is definitely not safe. Also, using a cellphone while driving is illegal in Florida. The move over law is not a new law. It's been around for years.
Right, the new law has just increased the number of situations you need to move over from tow trucks and emergency vehicles to any vehicle with warning lights activated. Some other minor changes to the law to make things clearer on situations you must slow down or move over, cause the old law had some vague points to it
So cops sit on the side of the road clocking traffic during rush hour ... Meanwhile, another cop pulls drivers over who are supposed to go from 70 to 50 and switch lanes 😂😅 ... But hey, it's to "Protect you" 🤣🤣🤣
Stupid law. If someone is on the shoulder, that person can’t be hit unless someone crosses into the shoulder also. Shouldn’t take a 15 ft buffer. Anyone who isn’t able to stay in his own lane (which would be safe) can’t be trusted to move over either.
Just park in the travel lane, wheel cranked to right, set the parking brake. The cruiser will protect both you and the pulled over motorist. I personally dont stop on the motorway, we can go to the nearest gas station, you being annoyed with me, isnt worth me risking my life on the shoulder.
Its not that hard FL commuters, any vehicle with flashing lights, not making excuses but in Miami & Broward with these excessively speeding drivers on any lane, they even give drivers problems when merging much less allowing another slow vehicle around them. It does force drivers to be more alert and considerate. I’d put a cone, a flare, or a reflective gear or vest beside my vehicle so that idiots, I mean drivers can take me seriously
This will not work in an area congested traffic, no real pullover lane, both right and left area that cars might be stopped. Cops need to just stop giving stupid tickets or allow a driver to drive to a safe area off the highway before stopping.
The most stupid thing I have ever seen is a sobriety field test conducted on a highway, especially at night. How could a cop force a citizen to perform a circus act along a dangerous road with vehicles passing by at 75 miles per hour so close? Where is the driver's and officer's safety?
Doesn't help that everyone is on their phones. Why don't you give tickets for that. Florida would be the richest state if they gave tickets to people on their phones. That's one of the main reasons why there are so many accidents.
I drive the S Florida Turnpike to and from work - just wondering when someone will total my car and maybe me as I slow down the few times I actually get up to the speed limit - they follow 1 or 2 car lengths while doing and looking at other things while driving - and you also have a bunch driving more then 20 miles more then you even if you are being pushed up to 80 - I am expecting more fatal collisions due to this law - I am not saying the law is bad, the drivers are and this gives them more chances to ram you - Note: I have not been on I-95 in almost 15 years because it is not worth the risk -
There have been fatal crashes caused by people attempting to obey the move over law in Florida one was on Alligator Alley where someone tried to move over only there was a car to their left, they swerved back to the right and lost control of their car and hit the car that was pulled over killing the left rear passenger. There have been many other incidents involving crashes and some where no crash occurred due to pure luck over the move over law. The move over law may look great on paper but in the real world it is a total failure.
You have to ask yourself what is more important public safety or officer safety… it’s makes more sense to execute the traffic stop in a safe area, not on I-95. Or create safe traffic zones along the highway for traffic infraction.. all interstates, state and US highways need to maintain free flow of traffic..the truth is when the blue lights comes on its create a hazard on the public roads

Good law . I drove tow trucks for 30 years and we have a highway here with now break down lane. I got hit by a car mirror once car was going about 40
how big of a paycheck did you get?
@@ardoin_337 Nothing car never stopped. I got a swollen elbow for a week
We need this nationwide.
Thought it was, states out here cowboyin' it and they respect law enforcement, ha joke!!
I hope someone thought this law through completely and that data is being tracked to see if it is working. Changing lanes quickly and unexpectedly can cause crashes too.
You turn on your signal (intention), move over when able to!
If it's too dangerous to move over you have the option of staying in the lane but must slow to 20mph under the speed limit
Neither one of those incidents would have occurred if there had not been a move over law. That is just two that I know about.
@@mustangecoboosthpp3869 arguing against the move over or slow down law because a few people are too stupid to pay attention to their surroundings is idiotic. Who is to say those people wouldn't have hit the cops on the side of the highway?
The move over or slow down law is simple and easy to anyone with half a braincell, but considering how every time I go anywhere I'm nearly spun out, T-Boned, sideswiped or run off the road, maybe you should have spent more of your time taking the licenses of idiot drivers instead of writing tickets for 5 over
@@Bryce_Fl I just hope the person behind me is paying attention to me slowing down
The cop is also suppose to make sure when u pull someone over, u pull them over in a safe area
Minnesota resident here, i was taught this when i was in Driver's Education, and I'm 36. Interesting that Florida residents had not been taught this especially if they respect LEOs so much
I agree with this 100% but vehicles that are broken down and abandoned; no brake lights on or signals are not considered "stopped" correct? I dont have to change lanes unless there's someone actually with or in the car?
Correct. The language of the law states the vehicle must have warning or emergency lights activated. So that is hazards, amber lights, white lights, green lights and reds and blues. Generally, if it's flashing, move over. Otherwise you don't have to
good, keep issuing these tickets. too many police officers, tow truck drivers, and emergency response people are having their lives risked by careless drivers
I completely agree with the old law, but if you're going to enforce the new law you need to start enforcing "emergency stopping only" on the interstates. I see people stop to change drivers, take a leak, change diapers, and all kinds of BS not meant to be done on the side of an interstate. So many damn vehicles on the shoulder you might as well not have a far right lane🤷♂️🤷♂️
just did the drive from nyc to st pete. people pulled on the side of the road, no hazard lights, in the middle of the night.
As a tow truck driver I appreciate it 🙏🏾
that truck passed the vibe check
It's called NOT move over and stop!!!!! YOU WILL BE REAR ENDED!!!!!! SAD VERY SAD
As a tow truck driver in Florida, FHP needs to do a better job. I've had fhp sit in the median near where I was loading and people don't move over and they just sit there.
Here from NYC when I came down it was mind blowing when I saw people did not move over for anyone on the side of the road very selfish driving behavior
Good job. God bles the officers. Citizens, drive safe.
As a CDL holder we’ve already been practicing this 🎉
Yes but sometime moving over can be more dangerous than staying in that lane, what I do sometime is slow down to about 35-40 mph acknowledging I see the Leo and the stop vehicle, and I cannot change lanes👍
Slow down & turn on emergency flashing lights
you either move over or slow down for police, work crews or someone stuck on side of the road and tow trucks pretty much any one on the side of the road
This has been a Law in Ontario Canada since the early 2000's traffic violations are taken seriously over here, from a License suspension plus fines and points to jail time.
That motors absolutely should not have been stopped in the Gore point that is the worst place to stop on the freeway
Would suck to be issued a move over citation while 87 cars fly by you, none moving over themselves. What is wrong with you people?
That Law isn't 20 Years Old.
But it kinda hard to put put that move over law because they realize cars speed in the fast lane whether cops present or not
It's the passing lane dude. Not the fast lane. Theres a reason it's called move over
@@EvilNeuro You know you don't have a right to speed in the left lane right? If the speed limit is 70 MPH and you are doing 80 MPH in the left lane the judge is not going to buy you were just passing other traffic.
@@mustangecoboosthpp3869 I literally implied what you said.
It's not the fast lane.
The only time speeding in it is okay is when everyone else is. Since then you HAVE to go faster or u cause a crash ya
If people in FL don't know this by now. They shouldn't be driving
I'm blown away at how clueless or the sense of entitlement they drive even faster as others do move over.
Give everyone young in Florida that ticket and right across America cause that is in the road manual too.. anyone that can’t move over they need to slow down to a complete stop and pass safe
Unfortunately moved to Florida 3 years ago and never in my life have I seen drivers so bad. Speeders, careless drivers, very very dangerous. They are rude and careless. NO regard for anything or anyone. Dented cars, banged up cars, no bumpers. Terrible. Everyone on their cellphones. So dangerous. You are risking your life every time you get into your car in florida. The worst drivers I have ever seen.
So they had a whole segment on this law that people still won't give a crap about.
How about this and get the hell out of the fast lane if you’re not passing. Drives me crazy down here.
Ive always done this since Ive been driving, people are idiots and common sense is long gone.
omg she is really young to be a Lieutenant. Good for her. GIRL POWER !!!!!
You mean road pirates.
They need to create an Advert on IG and FB. Reminder for all the newbies moving here and everyone else in general.
Its one every other freeway sign here, you see it as you are driving
I think a better option would be to take the nearest exit and on to a proper parking lot.
People will now wreck each other to move over in front of faster traffic. Good luck
People in left lane need to be cooperative and not prevent others from moving over
@@Asidebar Like what, slowing down in the left lane? You have to make it make sense
@@Asidebar Left lane is for fast moving traffic. There's this other road rule called "going with the flow of traffic".
what if im in a 10 mph zone, I guess i got to reverse?
20 years ago my old boss was driving a semi and a woman who was suicidal parked on the side of the highway, stepped in front of his truck. Horrific
Does that go for broke down vehicles that’s vacant on the shoulder of the highway?
Yes, if they have hazards or other warning lights activated or there's something like flares set. Otherwise you can treat it as if it's not there, but I'd still be careful since sometimes people's batteries die or something and they can't activate their hazards. If you hit someone you could still be found at fault depending on the circumstances
look at the memorial signs of people who perished on the shoulders there's so many
People will have the room to move over and choose not too
642 move over tickets, how many left lane hog tickets . The left lane rule is worse, causing more road rage and more accidents.
Everybody just slow down.
Then they shouldn't make a law where they have to pull over in a safe place, not in the highway. Therefore take the first exit and make it safer because the street is public
How about make a law to slow down when a cop pulls someone over. Also sometimes the other cars won't let you pull over.
Use your hazard lights when you pull over
They need to amplify this law. If you've been ticketed for not moving over more than once you should lose your license for a time.
Some other minor changes to the law to make things clearer on situations you must slow down or move over, cause the old law had some vague points to it
I didn’t know about this 😮 this must be some new kind of law
??? Are you just kidding? - must be.
Shame on you for not knowing.
The Nissan driver should’ve been charged with alluding or attempting to evade
That lieutenant, is about that life! That woman's not playing games!😮
10% of drivers claim they don't know the law the other 90% say they don't care.
So cops sit on the side of the road clocking traffic during rush hour ... Meanwhile, another cop pulls drivers over who are supposed to go from 70 to 50 and switch lanes 😂😅 ... But hey, it's to "Protect you" 🤣🤣🤣
Wasn't sure of the new law. High alert on the interstate. But, it's a good law.
Someone is starting to think
I do because Iam a semi truck driver but its all about safety but hardly any cars do it it should be enforced in every state
Just say taxes are going up. If it was about safety then stop stopping drivers on an active highway. You can still get revenue thru speed cams.
Speed cameras as well as right turn cameras are both unconstitutional because they deprive you of your constitutional right to face your accuser.
Stupid law. If someone is on the shoulder, that person can’t be hit unless someone crosses into the shoulder also. Shouldn’t take a 15 ft buffer. Anyone who isn’t able to stay in his own lane (which would be safe) can’t be trusted to move over either.
When you are on the shoulder and get smacked by a car, make sure to come back over here and update this comment.
They need to explain this in Spanish here in southern Florida where 50 percent don't speak or read English. PUT SIGNS IN SPANISH!!!!!!
or learn the English language.
And Creole also
@@lukeWiz44 I was about to say the same thing lol. What an ignorant comment to make.
It’s the law but doesn’t apply to troopers huh, working on 417 and had two troopers fly past me like I wasn’t there
1:47 I wonder how much that guy’s ticket is going to cost for not moving over
How about all those Go-ahead-and-die bike lanes?
Going 90 on a 70 too. These are the same drivers who don't give bicycles enough room. No respect for others!
The people on the bikes are probably in the middle of the road blowing through lights and stop signs illegally.
