I remember Tager vs Nu in Blazblue: Calamity Trigger being a horrible matchup for Tager. Or the Tager vs Noel matchup where invuln on backdash and reversal command grab could beat most approaches she had on offense.

For sure the hardest matchup in the game, you could even do a video about how much Sheik's Downthrow chaingrab alone influences the roster as a whole on a competitive matchup level (especially seeing with how different PAL-Melee and Project + is with Sheik's Downthrow being changed.)

Super Turbo Akuma versus Zangief feels like a classic example of an unwinnable matchup. Akuma bodies pretty much the whole cast, but Zangief is particularly hapless against him; all Akuma has to do is jump backwards and spam Zankuu Hadoken and there's absolutely nothing Zangief can do. He can't fire back, he can't crouch under it, he can't even use his Lariat to try and approach because Zankuu Hadoken breaks the Lariat for some reason. And if Zangief does somehow get into melee range, Akuma can just use his invincible teleport and pop out of his reach, or his spinning kick to do hefty damage and make some space. And even if Zangief does somehow close the gap and manage to force Akuma to fight on his terms? Then Akuma busts out the fireball traps and crossups and the big Russian watches his health bar evaporate.
It's a classic example of "one side needs to be playing perfectly, and the other side needs to make a lot of mistakes." The only way Zangief can win is if Akuma is cocky enough to take Zangief in melee, and lets down his defenses for Zangief to piledriver him.

Probably the worst matchup in KI 2013 history: pre-patch Shin Hisako vs RAAM. Shin Hisako can throw out a spirit orb and her forward dash would teleport her to wherever it was on screen. She can also hold forward while putting out the spirit orb to make it slowly travel across the screen. These days the orb will disappear if it goes off screen for too long, but pre-patch the orb would just stay active even if it's off screen. If Shin Hisako got the life lead against RAAM she could put out the orb and full screen teleport away from him since RAAM doesn't have the mobility to catch her, especially with her disgustingly fast back dash.

Zazie vs Ryoko in Karnov's Revenge/Fighter's History Dynamite
Ryoko is one of the two grapplers in the game, the other being Marstorius. 90% of her special moves are grabs, so she needs to get in there to do something
And then there's Zazie, arguably the best character in the game, who can dodge, dash, backdash, good reaching normals, has a pretty busted flaming uppercut...and as you'd expect, Ryoko cant do shit in these conditions

    • @BigBangBlitz
      @BigBangBlitz Před 3 lety +4

I have no qualms with Marstorius, Ryoko has complete air superiority, her instant air throw is half screen distance and seems to be vertically infinite, most of her pokes beat his normals and her light rolling kick anti airs everything he can do if you don't want to jump to contest air things. She is the only character that can throw from a defensive crouching position (possibly in any fighting game?) which leads to a chokehold chain throw that does 50%
Her normal standing throws can't beat his range, but her dash throw can. Th emain thing is Mars weak point is somewhat easy to snipe for her, the rolling anti air sometimes score a leg hit and her pressure is mostly attacking that area. If you can get a lead he's also one of teh easier guys to use her no damage throw loop on, which has langer range than her damage ones and can be used as a reversal with good timing.

Another 10-0 brutal matchup is Gold Lightan in TvC. As a giant he has super armor on literally every action he performs, has easy humongous damage on all of his moves, and his size makes running away from him a fruitless endeavor. Only a select few moves have armor piercing properties. The majority of the cast can do little if anything to contest him as they lack moves with this propert, giving Lightan a 10-0 matchup against the majority of the cast, but there is one character who flips the script on him. There are maybe 5 characters total who can fight giants in TvC, but Tekkaman Blade in particular completely flips the script on Lightan. He has 2 armor piercing air projectiles that completely destroy Lightan's game plan. Lightan can never soak fireballs with armor and approach Blade because Blades fireballs are cinematic hit grabs. Lightan cannot hit blade at round start and the moment Blade super jumps up Lightan can do nothing for the remainder of the match. Because of this Lightan, despite having near 10-0 matchups against almost the entire cast and most of the top tiers, is completely invalidated because of Blade. You don't have to be remotely good as Blade to do this. If you know how to super jump, air dadh, and dona quarter circle no Lightan player in the world will ever beat you. Of the 2 giants only PTX40A is viable as he has tools that can contest blade.

One of my favourite awful MUs is Nine vs Waldstein in BBTAG.
Waldstein is a slow grappler- he is tied for the highest HP in the game at 20k. Nine is a setup character with 4-way teleports and gigantic normals.
Additionally, Wald’s damage is considered pretty poor for a grappler, and Nine has 17k+ TODs.
The problems begin when Nine uses her high/low unblockable setup she can loop, and while Wald does have a meterless dp (like all characters in the game do), his dp’s hitbox is shaped in a way that will completely whiff is Nine uses the setup in him.
The only way to escape is to burst, and punishing burst in BBTAG pretty easy.

Chipp vs. Potemkin is a weird example of being a bad matchup for both parties. The fight is defined by the Chipp making a single mistake or getting read by the Pot and instantly losing the entire round. Pot is so slow and immobile that Chipp can run roughshod over him and mix him like crazy, but the literal SECOND the Pot gets off his anti-air command grab or, god forbid, his Pot Buster, then the Chipp player can kiss 65% of his health goodbye.
It is the only true 5-5 matchup. The Pot player has to sit still and block an ocean of bullshit coming his way, while the Chipp messes up ONCE and its over. No one wins. No one has fun. We all suffer for our hubris.

Karnov's Revenge has some really lopsided matchups, especially in the case of the game's two grapplers who have very pronounced weakesses. Ryoko is small and has short reach, and Marstorius has a very low jumo height. Both of them have a 9-1 matchup against Clown, whose range and special moves let him keep Ryoko out by mashing jab, and Mars has to deal with projectiles, Blanka balls, and headstomps the entire time, all with his woeful jump height.

    Here's three for the list...
1: Ganondorf vs. Ice Climbers - Super Smash Bros. Brawl (There's a lot of matchups that are almost unwinnable for Ganondorf in Brawl, but this one is arguably the worst of the worst)
2: Twelve vs. Chun Li - Street Fighter 3: Third Strike (Due to the nature of 3S, this matchup technically CAN be done as some of the all-time best Twelve players have shown; but it is nightmarish beyond words. Hugo has some pretty atrocious matchups as well.)
3: Akuma in Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo (There's a reason he's banned.)
Honorable mention to DeDeDe vs. Mario or Donkey Kong in Brawl. They are EXTREMELY awful for these two characters due to an infinite grab, but both of them have a passable enough air game that they can (and have) managed - as the meme goes - to "don't get grabbed."
