- In a time of uncertain politics and a crescendo of differences, American Ultra-Runner Rickey Gates sets off on foot across America. In the midst of the 2016 National Elections, which saw Republican candidate Donald Trump win the presidential elections, Gates realised that the America he knew wasn’t necessarily the America that was. Intrigued and curious, Gates decides to head out and see for himself in order to try understand and empathise with his fellow Americans. Starting out on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean in South Carolina, Gates journey takes him 5 months and nearly 3700 Miles to the Pacific Ocean in San Francisco, California. What begins as a search for the true America, during a period of political turmoil, ultimately becomes a story of identity as Gates begins to find clarity and meaning in his own life.

Share with us your favorite Rickey moment in the film. Ready, set, go... 😉
The moment he was in the snow saying “this is some bullish!t.” Or maybe the rubber chicken fingers.🤣
@@DoItNutrition "It supposed to snow in the low mountains... hopefully that's not where I am right now..." He totally jinxed it. 😂
it is the silent moment when he asked for water.. LOL.. awkward moment..
My favorite part is that Rickey is approachable and kind. He stops and talks to people, he’s not in a hurry to get to the finish. As a runner those are really important things to remember. What an awesome human being!!
When he was under the car drinking the mustard, was ace!
Ricky, how inspiring. I am 87 years old now and still try to keep running. I was able to relate to your journey as I have run in all 50 states and 18 countries. Not anyway near the journey you had, but a FUN run ! Thanks for your inspiration.
La multi ani fericiti ❤
"Remove NPR, CNN and Fox News from this equation, and speak to people one on one". I love that.
The guy was so shocked by the election outcome he decided to run 3500miles to understand it ! That is curiosity at it's finest.
I can relate to this...My big one was cycling around Australia...I can relate to all of this..accept the finished of my trip was not the happyness of this one...I was sad ...I was crying...I was alone...I walked into a pretrol station and bought a coke..said to the guy behind the counter...I ve done it...he said...what do you mean..you ve done it...I said I just completed 17 000 km around Australia on a push bike..He said...Good on you, mate!! And that was it !
That’s amazing man, congratulations!
Badass man. We should be having these stories on the news for people to aspire to. 💪
Geez what a bloody mission
Congratulations on completing your journey sir. That's an amazing accomplishment!
wow, incredible. and how genuine of you to be honest about ending it in a sad place. were you sad for the period of your life coming to a close? were you sad for more reasons?
The majority of humans are kind and generous, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
And even the ones that aren't.. in fact are the majority of the time
I hope you are right. But the majority of Americans are unaware, fearful, prejudiced, uneducated, or unhappy. We will become our values. So we need leaders who represent the finest of our values, not the worst. And we the people need to be able to tell the difference between those leaders.
Except in that next town over; they're sketchy.
Yes! Bless you they are. People want to be kind, it's obviously true. I think we all just get a little scared sometimes that it'll backfire on us. Like someone will take advantage, or be mean. But we all WANT to be kind. Why wouldn't we. Chin up America!
Yep. Just did a 5 day 675 mile Bike Trip to Florida. 0 problems with anybody
David Goggins running ultras led me to find a world full of beautiful people running what I thought was impossible distances. Amazing video.
Same as i do
Same as i do
Me too!!! Holy shit !!! The amount of inspiration these guys and gals ooze is absolutely incredible!!!!
I started challenging myself to run to-and-from work because of Goggins! It's a total of 22 miles! I can only do it once per month, though. My body starts to break down after 40 miles/week.
I am obese dreaming of taking part of such a feat goggins inspired me currently been walking to speed walking idk maybe 🙏
"I'd really appreciate if you'd take this money, in the spirit that it's given"! - Jim Steel. America as we as people who live outside it don't see represented enough on our screens today. Good folk everywhere!
LOVED this film! And we were so honored to have our music involved in it. -Giants & Pilgrims
Perfect soundtrack, could not have been a better choice. You just gained a fan!
Did you do that last song? Whats it called and where can I find it?
The Rest of the music was exzellent AS well but that one stood out to me...
@@letoatreides5165 I know this is a way after you posted this but if you go on Spotify if you have it and search up the title of this there's a playlist with every single song used in this video that's how I got a bunch of the ones I couldn't recognize or get names of
The world needs more people like Ricky and Jim Steele.
Bless Jim Steele and Ricky Gates.
The world has more people like Ricky and Jim Steele. They just aren't the loudest and most well known.
The last 5 minutes tells everything you'll need in your life. Seriously, excellent speech Rickey.
Now this made my top 5 running films ever. Just brilliant. Kudos from the UK 👌
...and the other 4 please

@@mckenna-photo have you seen Running the Sahara? What did you think of that?
@@cillianryan1585 YEAH! WHAT HE SAID!
That was so powerful - especially the last few minutes. Rickey’s words hit me so hard - we recently left LA to move to a smaller city in Upstate New York. It’s beautiful up here but it wasn’t a move I wanted to make - but I need to remember that this is who I am right now - and I need to be fully present with this version of myself that is getting to spend so much time with my wife and children and not long for another life - enjoy this one right now. Thanks for sharing this film.
I'm going to transcribe the last 10 minutes. Very powerful.
Now I need to see a documentary about Jim Steel.
I know! He said someone pulled him out of a foxhole or something along those lines. I need to hear more!
THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST INSPIRING VIDEOS ON THE INTERNET. Thank you Salomon and of course Ricky. It is so uplifting and honest. "Running is a way to get myself at the deepest level." Perfect.
Glad you enjoyed it, Cillian! 🙏
I’m not crying, my eyes are just sweaty
No worries, we all share the Sweaty Eyes Syndrom with this one.
I recently roofed Rickey's and Liz's new home. They are awesome people much respect! Was cool to see the premier in person here in Santa Fe, NM.
Great quote from Ricky: “empathy is at the core of understanding.”
"This water ain't fit to drink.....ohhh", (waiting, waiting, waiting for the invite from the inside tap) ".....ha well thanks, guess I will carry on"
Fear of The Stranger is at the route of so many of our problems. God bless that chap.
That scene was one of my favorites. Yes, this country is beautiful. Yes, there are kind people everywhere. And yet, do any of us know how much anti-black violence that elderly black man in the rural south has seen?
How has he survived? By, minding his own business....and staying away from strangers. In this country we cannot all walk through places that were once "sun down towns" (or remain so). I'm sure it will be confusing to many, but running 3700 miles through this country is a real privilege. I mean, Ahmad Arbery couldn't even run through a nearby neighborhood without being murdered.
I'm grateful for the documentary. The cinematography was beautiful. But, I'm also left wondering if a similar project could be done with BIPOC. If so, what would that look like?
I laughed harder at that than I should have. The level of awkward was just too funny.
@@1silv Interesting how you immediately jump to conclusions about the rude man....
@ultimateluigi640 I'm well familiar with Hella. This post isn't about him. Clearly, I look forward to following his journey and I hope it's a safe one. I did not say that running was a sport reserved for "white males." I am not a white male and I love running. But, since you are unaware of the risks that black runners face, perhaps you should look up the story of Ahmad Arbery. If you are unaware of the inequity behind how black bodies are policed on the land here in the US, look up Breonna Taylor, watch the 13th on Netflix....and most importantly, check the privilege of assuming you can tell a black person that their readings on race is wrong.
That was outstanding. I was totally gripped. A beautiful story, and Ricky, I hope you married that girl - she's a keeper!
I wanted to add that in my earlier comments. I agree. I have circumnavigated the sun 57 years and those gems are far and few between.
He did!
Rickey by far the best film of 2020! As someone with Cerebral Palsy and loves running! This movie made me want to do another adventure like yours! Thank you for everyone who made this movie! YOU ALL ROCK!
This moved me to tears. Thank you, Rickey and crew. WELL DONE
We should all be Jim Steele.
So amazing!! Thank you thank you !!!!!! 😊 peace and love love 💘❤ . Words can't explain how amazing this is of you to share this with us !!!!
This was absolutely incredible! When he speaks about what running means to him around the 47 minute mark with all the amazing shots of the snow capped mountains. I started getting into long distance running last year as a way to process the loss of my uncle who passed away from cancer. Running is much more than a sport to many of us. Thank you Ricky for this!
Inspirational. There is a beauty and peace in the repetition of long activities. Running, hiking, walking...what ever you are able to do. I find the earth and it's natural inhabitants become my church and temple. Wake, eat, go, eat, sleep, repeat. In this new world it is so important to keep life simple and keep an open mind at all times. Never forget to look back, and up. There is no such thing as failing at something, only the failure of not trying. Thanks for the video.
at 45:00 I remember the feeling he is describing of feeling accomplished when he hits Colorado from my thru hike of the PCT when I got to the California Oregon border. Growing up in Cali, walking that huge state I felt like I had answered all the questions I had going in. But that becomes the sweet spot. If you are enjoying the journey then everything else is bonus and pushing deeper into the unknown. It is after that part of my hike that I learned the unexpected things about myself and I started observing rather than comparing everything to my expectations. That is the lesson I've taken the most from my hike into my life past that adventure.
When he lingered to be offered drinking water... I felt that🙃
Fantastic. A ray of hope in divided times.
Hats off to Rickey for wanting to get to know people better and putting that desire into action.
I love this whole thing, great footage, great message. but I gotta say, As a southerner I really hate it when people adopt an unnatural southern dialect or accent when speaking to a southerner.
Agreed. All I can say is, Aw Bless your Heart! 😉🤣
Without realizing it in the beginning, this was a love story- A love of finding yourself.
"Although I'll have this journey of running across the states for the rest of my life it'll never be as rich as it was when I was doing it so what does that leave me with? I'm not totally sure other than I now that I did do it and that it was beautiful and sad and happy and challengeing and easy and hot and cold and straight and narrow and curvy and yeah it was everything..." Greetings from Romania!
Incredible Journey.....Ricky was peeing blood at the lowest point of his journey, recovered physically/mentally and maintained the pursuit for his Ultimate Goal.
I was living in Chattanooga when Rickey passed through. It was an honor to welcome him on his way, and I hope he enjoyed his time there. Maybe there’s violence there (maybe? I never saw any of it), but it’s also one of the most wonderful cities I’ve ever been to.
This video is long overdue and right on time all at once. Thanks for the necessary reminders.
Jim Steel is a awesome human being...just giving no questions asked..wow
This is beautiful in every way! Definitely one of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen. Ricky’s words will stick with me for a long time.
being an artist, writer, former professional nordic athlete and currently mostly runner myself, Rickey Gates is one of these rare people that really manages to bring these different things together, or as he said in somewhere in the movie: "What does running mean to me? The funny thing is that I used to consider it a sport and now I don't consider a sport at all, it's really just a medium." thank you Salomon for supporting someone like him, someone who tells stories through running, someone who shows the true potential of moving, someone who elevates running above just the pushing and pulling onto the realm of connection, of care, of curiosity. one last thing: if anyone knows the song starting at 59:07 (right after he deserts the first trolley), I'd be over the moon if u could let me know :)

A man willing to make a change in his life. Not afraid to walk away from his partner, car, and home to face his dream. Respect
I live in one of the states you visited. Right in middle America. I believe my community to be exceptionally diverse and generous. America is me and America is you and all of us everywhere. Thanks for elevating my spirit With this video. Humanity is to always be celebrated.
I am always in awe of Dean's work but this was just exceptional. In awe of Ricky. Amazing film and journey! Thank You!
I so enjoyed watching this. Thank You for sharing Brother Ricky 💚💛🙏🏾🥾
Rickey - thank you! So beautiful - what you and Dean created. Tears. Respect. And Honor.
I came really close to bailing in the first few moments of this video when it looked it was going to be another "Orange Man Is Bad" jeremiad but I hung on long enough to catch where you were going with this. Very happy that I stuck with it. It isn't about politics at all. It's about appreciating life and people. Sounds corny but people wouldn't be so angry all the time if they just stopped long enough to rethink their priorities and how dumb it is to place politics so high on that list. Excellent work.
I feel as though he realised that the media portrays Orange Man Bad and the people that support him are deplorables. Throughout the film though its almost like he realized that these people are actually generally kind, generous and easy going peopl going about their lives.
Interesting the Hillary Supporter was the one who wouldn't offer him water....
Same
We/people would be less angry if we stopped watching the media's portrayal of our fellow Americans!
I literally just commented about this being politically motivated. Decided to scroll the comments for any like minded while watching the film. Got halfway, saw your comment, and agree 100% sir! Glad he took the time to find out who the American people actually are, instead of what someone's else portrays and reports us as.
Now to find my original comment and delete it. Lol! 🤠🤣
I love you Ricky Gates. I'm a 56 year old trail running idiot but I love you. I love your vision, your ideals, your vision, your romanticism. Passion is a person's drive, their love, their life force that drives them to see and experience beyond what they ever thought or conceived was possible for themselves. We all have drive, we all have dreams but not everybody has passion. I love your passion.
Hey Ricky, Loved every second of your run bro, Myself and a friend ran it in 2015 and you reminded me of all the amazing/hard times /all the people we ,met to along the way, Huge congratulations , thanks for the memories and your awesomeness to push through all those moments that the trail and roads bring to this kinda adventure. Cant wait to met up one day and share some stories. Your kiwi friend Jup Brown
What a fantastic story from a fantastic, gentle, humble human being - bravissimo Rickey, bravissimo Salomon 🙌
I had been waiting for this one for many months and I am so glad that I finally got to see this.
Ricky has so much love, compassion and empathy that I can't help but fall in love with every minute of this movie....
Thanks a lot to Ricky and Salomon for doing this.
That moment with the dogs got me good, such an incredible movie and story! Congratulations Ricky, thank you for sharing your story, all the moments and all the insights 🙏
YEAH ! Living is beautiful, believing is beautiful ! I'll watch this movie again from time to time when I'll forget that, when I'm confused, when I'm fed up with myself - and when I'm to lazy to do my 10km run ; )
Watched it straight through...couldn't stop watching. Good job
What a great film. Thanks for sharing this with us!!
I got really happy watching this!
Huge hug from Brazil
When a person shares their hopes fears and failures I feel a closeness with them and I see and feel their beauty. Thank you Rickey I appreciate you.
Thank you for the perspective I needed, I too hope to find something that reveals my truth. felt so many emotions, this was beautiful
Thank You for sharing your experience(s) with us Rickey. I just finished watching and had Alexa play John Denver Take Me Home , to the place I belong....Seems fitting. Your journey reminds me of an intensive retreat. There was an awakening, and even somewhat of a conversion. And plenty of positive energy (aside from day 100 and having to drink mustard). Thanks again. Steve
“I just felt like running.”
The man at 19:21 is the best. So much gratitude and appreciation. We all need to strive to have that outlook, me included
A beautiful story and film! Thanks Rickey for sharing your story with us and Salomon for supporting him to do it. Loved it!

Rickey is the man!
Watching Rikey’s film adds a great start to 2021. Amazing stuff
The long wait was worth it. Really well documented and the narrative was heart warming. Congrats Rickey. Now go get 'em mustard.
A smile on my face for the entire time :)
Thats something the media takes away so often
Loved your journey. Thank you for sharing. Wonderful!
I found your trip to be very inspiring, I hadn't thought of our tendency to be in tribes or clans as fear of another tribe or clan. You're very brave and hopefully this will encourage people to raise their heads above the parapet and see that there's nothing to fear. We are all the same 😊 Thank you.
Way to go Ricky! Such an awesome view of the US and you, Ricky!
Thank you so much for sharing, Rickey and Salomon! 🙏🏼❤️✨
Beautiful film! I've been waiting for this for months and it didn't disappoint. Rickey is such an inspiration.
Great film! This film is super actual at a time, where the "United" States become more and more divided.
Beautifully filmed with some good lessons learnt... don’t listen to the media and politicians who want to divide us... we are one human race and if you are open to that thought you will find the majority of people will be helpful and kind. We have one life, make sure you appreciate every day 😊
Rickey, this is truly the most inspirational film I've ever seen. Many thanks and the very best from Germany!
"What does running mean to me? The funny thing is that I used to consider it a sport and now I don't consider a sport at all, it's really just a medium." and ! what is the name of the last song ?
Thanks I didn’t find it
Thanks Ricky, Salomon TV another great production
What a film! Congrats!
Not only an awesome crossing of the US through beautiful places but mainly an exciting journey among people: what a number of snapshots of persons so different but so similar at the same time!
I've really enjoyed this inspiring experience so well described with images and words.
Thank you Rickey for sharing your emotions! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Interesting choice to give equal weight to two different messages. I don't feel like the transition between them is always smooth, but there's a lot to like about both of them. The message that we are mostly the same continues to be so needed in this country, and Rickey doesn't oversell it. This rings true with every other interview I've seen him give. Just a very genuine guy who's not afraid to admit that he doesn't understand some things. And that while he'll refrain from trying to wrap his experience up in a tidy package, there's plenty to be taken from it.
My first thought as this
wrapped up was that I wish there were more people out there like him. But I guess that's the knee jerk response- to hear him tell it, there already are. In abundance.
Brilliant and powerful! Thank you, Ricky Gates!
Great content Salomon !!! Congratulations Rickey a truly unique experience
Months waiting for this documentary. Thanks again Rickey and Salomon for inspire our lifes! Never stop to make this videos and adventures with your talent. @salomontv
The amount of interested people you meet on your journey is tremendously life-affirming. One feels a humbleness few documentaries provide. I feel like packing my bag and going out, seeing the world and meeting people like you did. Strong message, and an emotional roller-coaster ride, in just the right way. Well done!
Thank you for making this film! I think you you spoke for so many on so many different levels. We all have the same view, some just view through a different lens.
Such a great, deep and moving film, bravo
Amazing work to all involved in this, especially Rickey. Truly inspirational and was my fuel to wrap up my biggest running month ever (264 km) in my short three years as a runner, and aspiring ultra runner at 38 years old.
Go you good thing! I'm inspired and in the past few weeks have returned to running seriously at 52. It's like I'm rediscovering myself - spending hours on forest trails is such a privilege and so good for you in so many ways. Perhaps I can get up to 264 km in a month soon too! Cheers and keep it up - from Sydney, Aust - Dave
@@deldridg That's excellent, dude! One thing I'm realizing as I get older is that I'm never too old to do things. Keep at it and enjoy those trails, mate!
@@eugenemorrison2720 Thanks Eugene. I have to say, at 38 you are too young to be concerned about age holding you back! I have 2 super-fit kids at age 8 and 10 - they are both superb runners - our 8 year old daughter is running 10km at around 5:30 min/km pace, our 10 year old son is running 30km and can run sub 4 min kms over shorter distances - all on rough trails, so I have no choice but to keep it going. When 70 year olds can run sub-3 hour marathons, there are no excuses!! ...and it takes you away from the global turmoil splattered all over our screens! :-)
wow, what a beautiful, personal, intimate, reflective, empathetic and true film!
