      Even Ford is using made-in-China components. The F150 is about 40% foreign-made, even though it's considered the most American of trucks. This is just the reality of our interdependent world. In my opinion, TM is being very pragmatic and realistic here, buying components that someone else can make cheaper and better. History is littered with failed corporations that had a "not invented here" mentality.

    The HYBRID cars of TOYOTA use between 4.5-6 L/ 100 KM, which is remarkable. Yet, it seems that the Chinese and BYD (helped by Geely) have reahced efficiency of under 3 L/ 100 KM. HOW????????????????? 1. bigger battery, which is used for speeds under 80km (ICE CARS ARE HIGHLY INEFFICIENT AT LOW SPEEDS) 2. the new 1.5 ICE engine is highly efficient by combining Direct Injection Turbo Charging, and a secret new TECH.. SO, THESE NEW CHINESE HYBRIDS USE 50% LESS GAS AS THE AVERAGE CAR ON THE ROAD....... MIND BLOWING.

      It’s basically GM’s voltec plug in hybrid system but with better battery and continuous charging, too bad GM no longer wants to do this anymore they been losing money on every plug in hybrid ever since 2011 2012. If GM were to do BYD style hybrid it could have worked, maybe not plug in, because complicated electrical circuits and electricity supply management software combined with full self driving is headache.

The only reason I would look at their hybrids is that I can't afford an EV. There is a window at the moment where Toyota might do well, but this will change once EV's get cheaper. I have had my RAV4 for 25 years, in that time it has blown a tail light globe, water pump seal and timing belt (that's the full list of replaced items, apart from consumables). Maybe the new Toyota hybrids will finally support "real" L2 charging. I "almost" bought a Prius Prime until I found out that their L2 charger operates at 1/5 the power of "real" L2 charging. Prius Prime max charging is 3.3 kW whereas "real" L2 maxes out at 19.2 kW. Public chargers charge you based on mins of use, not amount of power you use. So it'll cost you 5 times more to charge your Prius Prime at a public charging station. (I live in a condo that's not EV equipped, so I would have to rely on public charging.)

    Around the turn of the century Toyota seemed forward looking, but it felt like they stagnated in that time and place. Were they busy with making progress, their batteries would gradually improve (bigger, more electricity, range) and eventually should have introduced plugging in and recharging. Now I did not keep track, but I cannot remember anything like that happening. So in effect, the Prius remained the less worse option but then with less promise for the future for the future came and left it behind.

    Toyota owns the current regular hybrid market with its 5th generation Prius design introduced last year. The secret sauce is its Electronic CVT with mechanical first gear. The motor is an integral part of the CVT. Only Toyota makes it. (Ford got a license from Toyota for its Maverick Hybrid.) I own one in a Corolla Cross Hybrid and it is awesome and extremely dependable, unlike plugin hybrids. Plugin hybrids are much more expensive. The battery in a Toyota hybrid is only 1.3 KWH while 30 or 40 KWH in a plugin hybrid. In several years, Toyota will offer every model it makes with the current hybrid option.

    Bosch make their batteries for power tools using Lithium Ion by the way, and I can't think of any industries much more conservative than builders. They switched because it was past time. The guys who have been in our house this week, have a Makita radio that looks like it could survive the apocalypse. You can also get a clip on attachment for the battery that adds US ports, so you can charge your phone. Builders are also using JCBs that are battery operated now.
    Toyota is stuck in the past and it's really sad. There are still uses for NiMH batteries, but those are waning and mostly relate to really specific niche use cases. I'm getting new electronics now that would previously have been battery operated, but are now USB rechargeable and have built in Li-Ion batteries. Alarm clocks, torches, hair trimmers, handheld vacuums etc.

      If the economics have running on electricity as being less expensive (which it is most places), people will plug in their vehicles. The studies that claim many people do not plug in their vehicles were based on company cars (a frequent perk in the UK) where they were reimbursed for fuel. If you do not pay for fuel, the incentive to change behavior is not there. In China, fuel is expensive and charging is relatively convenient. In addition their PHEV's are designed to run as EV's first (rather than a hybrid with a plug added as an afterthought), with electric ranges far beyond what the Volt offered. As such, most people in China plug in.

    A plug-in hybrid is rarely worth the extra cost. The standard Toyota hybrid takes years to pay back, the PHEV version may never pay back.
    On the 2nd hand market a Toyota hybrid can be very low cost to own - let the depreciation work for you. Unlike a BEV, a used Toyota hybrid is very serviceable.

      Well the new 5th gen PHEVs BYD just launched are not that much more expensive than HEVs or even pure ICE vehicles, starting at the equivalent of just 14k USD, and can achieve up to 2.2L/100km consumption in HYBRID mode, with a depleted battery. Back of the napkin math in the Chinese market indicate not only is the BYD PHEV cheaper than a equivalent class BEV to buy, it is also cheaper to "fuel" the PHEV by just using gasoline versus charging a BEV with electricity. That's how efficient the new PHEVs from BYD are.

    Toyota hybrids are the EV nerds cryptonite.. ultra efficient without needing charging. Here hes talking about PHEV which is useless tech that Toyota don't even make ( I think )

    Swappable batteries is the future, not plug-ins.

    • @machoopichoo2
      @machoopichoo2 Před měsícem

      Battery swap is a terrible idea and a big part of why Nio is losing money, hand over fist. Just a few examples...the battery pack can't be structural, it's a battery constrained world, and this is a huge capital outlay for Nio.

    • @sosomelodies659
      @sosomelodies659 Před měsícem

      @machoopichoo2 They're not losing money because of swappable batteries. It's something else. We change out forklift batteries all day at our wherehouse. We have about 20 forklifts Each battery weighs 2000lbs . It works and it's quick. Only 7 to 10 minutes. Been doing it for 24yrs. In the USA.

    • @machoopichoo2
      @machoopichoo2 Před měsícem

      @@sosomelodies659 Massive capital outlay, especially when considering the swapping station. Are the batteries the most expensive part of the forklift and part of the structure? Batteries charging speed is increasing exponentially and will eventually come close to the time needed to swap a battery. Each model and even variants within models need different batteries, so there will be many types of batteries needed at every station (i.e., more capital and lowered economies of scale). Also, what about lineups?
      Now, Nio is losing a sh!t load of money on gross automotive margin, like every other BEV maker (excluding BYD and Tesla), which is also part of the problem.

    • @sosomelodies659
      @sosomelodies659 Před měsícem

      @machoopichoo2 These all sound like excuses. But hey if you prefer high speed charging and risk burning your house down, be my guest. I don't like the communists but they're doing it right with swappable batteries. The question now is how to make it profitable.
