  • Arsenal are firmly back in the title race after a huge 6-0 victory over West Ham United. But with the score still 0-0 after 30 minutes, a subtle but brilliant tweak from Mikel Arteta finally got his side the control they needed to humiliate their London rivals. One man in particular, Martin Odegaard, was at the very heart of this. Adam Clery explains why...

      @@Ivanovic5580 That’s understandable until you look at the amount of money he was allocated. Kroenke only really allowed him to spend last summer with the purchases of Rice, Timber, and Havertz. Everything before that doesn’t compare to the likes of City’s ability to spend.

      Just on SUnday we had Zinchencko, Timber, Tomiyasu, Party, Jesus, Smith Rowe, Viera and JOrginho out.....8 first team players....still won 0-6 away from home.
      It's not an excuse hence you forgetting that...we didn't moan.
      It shows how well Arteta coaches the entire squad. Joined September 2019 and has spent £650m...whilst not being able to sell anyone of note. Go look at the squad he started with....Auba, Ozil, Mustafi, Luiz, Sokratis, Bellerin etc....all leftovers from Wenger on high wages and no one wanted them. If we could've actually sold players that £650m would be much lower but you had shit players on £150 - 300k a week.

      @alexsmith6322 I think it's already completed. Think about it. We beat Liverpool with 3 goals and west ham with six, if we go on a scoring streak with this squad consistently, do we actually need a number 9? This squad model seems sustainable by all metrics and reminiscent of the invincibles and the reason why that the invincibles were that is because we weren't dependent on Henry or Bergkamp. Everyone could get goals, it was just that Henry was exceptional at it.

    • @11tokajj

We might pull a title out the bag with the goals spread across the team, but in those crunch matches where a half chance falls to our forwards, I don’t trust this roster to convert that and I personally think that could be the difference. Look at Haalands last game for example, completely anonymous for most of it, comes away with 2 goals.

    @chidubemnjoku9821 Před 3 měsíci +53

    I think the reason Arteta didn't seemingly care about Ben Johnson was because with Benny Blanco inverting, Saliba covers at RB with Gabriel as CCB. Saliba at RB literally means you can go to sleep and rest assured you're safe. Plus, Benny, unlike Zinchenko/Kiwior, has a big engine and can double up on Johnson if necessary.

    • @bighamster2
      @bighamster2 Před 3 měsíci +4

      I mean, I think Saliba naturally suits being the CCB far more than Gabriel. Both are capable of either, but it is a slight risk in that sense. It does also break up the Saka-Ode-White triade to an extent, which is probably Arsenal's most polished attacking force.
      So it's definitely not a shock that it works, but I think there's a reason we've not really seen it much (especially from the start of games)

    • @landonlowe4029
      @landonlowe4029 Před 3 měsíci +4

      Other thing is if Johnson does push up that then leaves Saka one v one on the opposing full back… way more risky for West Ham to leave Saka one v one than us leaving Johnson 1 v1 in all honesty. If they had an elite one v one defender say like Bissaka from United or Udogie from Spurs it’s worth a gamble but they don’t

    • @Jkev24
      @Jkev24 Před 3 měsíci

      @@bighamster2yeah it's something you probably don't want to start with since it can result in a quick conceded goal, putting your squad on the backfoot very quickly.
      I think it's a purely adjustment move because you need to feel out the game before seeing if it will be successful. Like how dangerous is the winger playing on the side you want to leave open? How do your players look? Are they tired? Looking like they're laboring maybe due to a knock?
      Not to mention, you want to absorb the initial onslaught from a team while you're playing away. The crowd tends to pick the home team up at the start of matches, so last thing you want is for this to lead to a quick goal that gets the crowd fired up.
      It was a risky move by Arteta, but he realized the risk was much lower after feeling the game out before inverting White.
      Part of me wonders if this was the plan all along by Arteta. Feel out the game in a very conservative formation trying to not concede (and lulling the opponent to sleep a bit) and then springing the inversion once he felt confident it wouldn't be exploited and that his players seemed to be playing/moving well.

    Great analysis. What you saw was what Jurien Timber was supposed to be for Arsenal this season. There is a plan longterm to open up Odegaard and make the right pod with Saka even better. It is great that White can do this as well, Timber offers even more from a ball retention standpoint in the central areas. This is also why West Ham when they rarely did break through it was a through ball in behind White that did it, in the first half (3 times). The gamble paid off, with White's positioning BOTH Saka and Odegaard put in man of the match performances (if you can even pick 1 in this game). Odegaard broke just about every possession stat in the premier league era; his stat sheet was crazy...give it a look - 1st in every category.

For the first 25 minutes Arsenal simply stifled West Ham and the crowd had gone noticeably quiet. Then Arteta switched over to attack. That is one part of it, the other is to overload one flank in order to isolate Saka and Martinelli 1v1 against their opposing fullback on the other side of the pitch.
      We've broke down a few low blocks this season purely off of Saka's brilliance in beating a fullback in 1v1 situations and providing very difficult to defend crosses to the far post.
      In other games the defender struggles to stop Martinelli 1v1, so they end up giving away so many corners to an Arsenal that is good at scoring from set pieces.

    I know this is mild insanity but I actually think Arteta is the best manager in the League right now. Klopp has thrown the towel in and I don't think he's committed anymore. Pep is brilliant but he's also financed by Saudi money and CFG. A blind man could lead that team to victory. Arteta came in at a massive AFC slump and caused problems immediately. He organized a young squad and we're equal GD with City right now. "Domination" AFC COYG

This season Arteta not only beat the 3 teams but defended very well and when was the last time Pep City had one shot on target the whole 90 minutes or Klopp Liverpool had one shot on target for 90 minutes?? They answer is no.. Arteta managed did that this season. Arsenal just lost in counter attack and loosing point. They lose even when they got 32 shots and 13 on target without a goal..

    The question remains whether this was adaptive or planned by Arteta. For instance: soak up the home crowd/team's energy in the first part of the half and assert dominance of the ball to an unusual degree (90/10% split in the first 15 or so) so that west ham were no longer trying to exploit space as they were just focused on defending and chasing the ball. I lean towards this being a planned shift and if so that is perhaps even more impressive from Arteta.

    Arteta tried inverting Partey from RB early in the season, because he’s the midfielder who’s got the incisive, defence-splitting passing that Rice doesn’t (yet). And with him AND rice together off the ball, we would be even better defensively than we have been with Partey injured.

    Can't believe our own fans were calling for Arteta's head after a few bad results and ignoring the upwards trajectory of improvement in the team over the last 3 years. Such spoilt children after finishing 2nd last season, almost tasting glory, and now that they have a taste of winning more games, they expect trophies on demand. City are the best team in the world. We're competing against a club and manager that have the best squad worldwide. There is no shame in finishing 2nd last season regardless of the childish opinions of the team bottling the title. We were fatigued, had key injuries in Partey, Saliba and Jesus, which made our already thin squad even thinner and we lacked the experience to go all the way. This season, our young team has more experience under their belt, they'll learn from last season which is crucial in us fighting for the title again this season. Be patient. The trophies will come

    as a WH supporter you have described why many of us cannot stand watching Moyesball or understand why he doesn't adapt quickly enough in-game and how he consistently plays players out of position, in this instance Ben Johnson, no game time for long periods of the season, one good game because of necessity and suddenly he's played in another position because again of necessity.

  • @robg5047

    For as much as Arteta should get credit for exploiting Ben Johnson inexplicably being our left winger, Moyes should be receiving criticism for Ben Johnson inexplicably being our left winger. There's a reason Arteta knew he could just completely ignore him. It's unacceptable that after a transfer window we have found ourselves in this situation.
    West Ham fans will complain about options available and injuries, but Moyes left Cornet and Ings on the bench the entire game despite flogging Bowen to death. He could have easily lined up Cornet - JWP - Kudus behind Bowen, or Cornet - Kudus - Bowen behind Ings at any point during the game. But no, we just need all the central midfielders on the pitch at all times, the more the merrier.

    I think Arteta had in him to do this since he came in. But only now are able to execute his instructions on the fly because we have the pieces and we've rehearsed and experienced most of the situations.

    edit: in the past we seem to camp on the edge of teams boxes which is where we struggle without a real target man and a lack of space to play into
