How Unai Emery's Villa Just BROKE Arsenal's System

  • Former Arsenal manager Unai Emery came back to haunt his former club this weekend, and put an enormous dent in their Premier League title ambitions in the process. But after a first-half where Mikel Arteta's men looked in total control, how did his predecessor completely flip the game around in the second 45? Adam Clery looks at how a slight change of shape, and a massive change of approach, gave us one of the shocks of the season.

      The Tv companies - not just UK but worldwide - believe that their product success is predicated upon the existance of the 'Top 6', and continued success of the 'Top 6'.
      Anything that harms that is literally (in their view) bad for business.
      So, having commentators and pundits just continually wax on about one team's players, rather than actually commentating on the game, makes sense to them.
      Educating people on the nuacnes of football runs counter to that.
      In much the same way that most of the world's media treats politics. They do what they see aas more profitable.
      If it means an inferior product - who cares? So long as they getthe engagement.

A perfect game on paper can only get you as far as you have the right players to execute it. Brilliant tactical breakdown and really explained well 👏 You got my subscription!
    As a Villa fan, it was so frustrating that no one bothered to truly understand what was going on tactically. As far as I can see there was just you and another Villa Podcaster who does these breakdowns brilliantly too.
    I agree with all your findings except perhaps one idea to pass by you. Emery will often balance risk and reward with specific tactics against very good teams. I believe his goal in the first half was always to resolutely defend. The players were prepared to double up, to chase down, to support each other as they narrowed the shot angles as per the example of Saka's shots and Jesus's header. By staying so deep they conserved energy while looking for opportunities to break.
    As good as Arsenal were in the first half, particularly Odegaard who had far too much space so agreed that wasn't great, some aspects weren't perfect but perfect wasn't the goal. The Villa team is used to holding the fort so to speak, it's not always pretty, but because we have a reduced first 11 and squad, I think he decided it was worth the risk if we could hang in there till half-time as he wanted the Arsenal team to be lulled, to chase the ball forward, to use up energy. So if it went to plan and it was 0-0 or close to it, he could pull the trigger on the 2nd half tactics exactly as you outlined them.
    That's why Emery is a tactical master. It doesn't always pan out as per the spanking we got by Spurs at Villa Park. But generally speaking it does ergo we are 4th despite having to deal with key injuries all season long and stupid suspensions.

    My take:
    1. We were losing the physical battles in 1v1 which is unusual so Arteta brings on Tomiyasu, why doesn't he rather bring Jorgihno or Partey on for Odegard. That way we can regain some form of control and also physicality with Rice pushing up. Yes we lose some creativity with Odegard off but we can gain it from deep playmaker in Partey or Jorgihno and also have the needed physicality in Havertz and Rice in the middle of the park.
    2. Villa dropped deeper in the second half and closed the spaces so what do we do, i leave that to Arteta cos he knows 👌 best.

    • @Lioness_UTV
      @Lioness_UTV Před měsícem

      I agree, I think Arteta underestimated Emery and the Villa team as we were depleted. Not that he didn't respect Emery's tactical abilities just that he likely thought Emery wld need to adjust his gamplan as Arsenal had been playing so well.
      Arteta wasn't prepared for Emery's tactics to be a higher risk 2-step plan:
      1st half hold firm, make them work for chances, double up on dangerous players, play deep, conserve energy.
      2nd half adjust team structure, make Arsenal chase the ball, wear them out further and he gave Villa the greenlight to go for it with renewed energy and focus which they did from the first kick of the 2nd half ball.

    • @Best_game59
      @Best_game59 Před měsícem +1

      What we should have done is stop pressing high as we did in the Porto home game and wait to win second balls. Zaniollo was winning so many balls, had we stopped pressing high in the second half once we realised we were losing ground (Bayern did that to us after Saka scored), a midfielder like Kai would have gubbled all those long balls to Zaniollo. We should also have subbed Zinchenko for Tomiyasu or Kivio, basically flipped the game Villa were trying to play on them...then use our combinations to create chances from second balls and midfield turnovers, like we did against Newcastle at home in the second half....that said, we should have taken the 3-4 chances in the first half, Kai -2 runs one on one with goalie, he waited too long to take a shot, GJesus, header should have been on target from 6 yards out, Trossard had 75% of the goal gaping yet shot near Martinez foot. Saka also had a half chance that he could have done better with...anyway. Also the goal conceded, Martinelli was caught ball watching, he should have helped Zinny like Saka was doing for Ben White....anyway-lets dust ourselves and go again.

Havertz is more effective on the 9 ruther than the 8, he press defenders effectively & trucks the the ball well. Jesus is not clinical & not even fit enough to press defenders as Havertz, Trossard doesn't have the abilities to defend & carry on defenders as both Jesus & Martineli & also not a big game influencer & not a 90min game player. Rice is more effective on the 8 ruther than 6 then if we have two available players who can do the roll why is he not playing them? So for sure changing the system and selection of squad is the reason behind the defeat. Don't get me wrong I like Arteta philosophy but when he got it wrong I am going to criticise him thanks.

    With regards to Zinchenko, it's not always just that he makes mistakes directly for goals. It's that he makes a lot of mistakes in the defensive third that in turn hypes up the opposition crowd and players and turns the momentum in their favour.

      Very few fans of any team are capable of understanding this. Villa won because Arsenal didn’t take their chances in the first half and then made some astute tactical tweets at the right time. Trossard scores for point blank k as he should have and it’s a totally different story.

    i love these videos. the analysis is so much better than what you get on tv from the ex-pros. villa played a great game in two very different halves. arsenal were sloppy in front of goal and, i would posit, a little over-confident in both this game and the bayern one. they thought they could just keep doing what they had been doing for weeks and didn't adjust to the game when it was clear it wasn't working. players and coach still learning at this level. can still win the league. 2 good results and a brighton draw against city and we are back on top and everything looks rosy again. Brilliant response to all the nonsense that has gone before. Villa played at a level that they have been consistently delivering for most of 2023. Arsenal fans would do well to remember if they had thrown points away against Man Utd and Brentford recently they would ALSO be on 71 points.

    I just reviewed the match stats because I noticed we dropped in making chances.
    -It turned out that that drop started from the 64th minute.
    -Also Odegaard was leading in passes to the final/attacking third(at least before he was subbed off 5 minutes before Villa's 1st Goal).
    -In fact with him included, 5 of all the players that were leading in final 3rd passes in that match were on the Arsenal side. But between the 64th minute and Villa's 2nd goal(87th minute) that wasn't the case anymore.
    -Martinelli(who came on in the 67th) didn't lead in that until the period from the time AFTER the last Villa goal. So knowing the we started lacking in chances and Martinelli came on just 3 minutes after that he should have had more passes to at least make that sub worth it.
    -Overall we were leading in passes in both attacking & mid thirds in the game, but within the period between that 64th minute and the last goal alone, it was all Villa.
    -Before that 64th minute we had better tackles but after that, it was all Villa. Throughout the match Villa led in interceptions and blocks, all within their defensive 3rd. In fact they literally blocked over half of our shots.

    Ok. You explained well what Villa's plan was. It is clear. But I cant understand what happened to Arsenal in the 2nd half. Seriously. Despite Villa's block, Arsenal created 4-5 goal chances in the 1st half. But in the 2nd... we barely had 1 chance... Did Arsenal lose stamina, or was it Arteta's plan to give Villa the ball?... I have not clue... The facts are there. Villa and Unai has done it again... painful loss. / and separately, -> THANKS for highlighting Zinchenko position during that 1st goal.... I HATE hearing people hating Zinchenko for bad defending.... He was NOT a problem during 1st goal... but 4 other Arsenal players >> Havertz (didn't block Moreno's passing line - stupid), Raya - for not reading the goal trajectory, Rice - for not closing the gap for that cross... and finally as you rightly pointed out - Martinelli.... how on Earth he decided not to follow Baily??... the only reason, I guess >> He could not believe that Moreno will be able to pass the ball from that corner position... absolutely awful childish goal to concede. But ZInchenko is not guilty at all ... stop that hate people... read football game...

    • @geordievillan
      @geordievillan Před měsícem +1

      Martinelli had a choice between try and follow Bailey - and having not done so immediately that's gonna be a tough ask - and covering the empty space outside the box. He made the right call.
      The % chance that the ball winds up coming back inside to the area between pen spot and edge of area for a shot from thetwo Villa players waiting for that to happen is higher than for it to go through 4 players and keeper to the far post.
      It looks bad in hindsight, but had he followed Bailey and the ball had gone to the pen spot and been sashed home, he'd have looked equally as bad.
      Sometimes football is about moving your opponents OUT of space, as much as into it, and Villa do that really well.

    • @andronovm
      @andronovm Před měsícem +1

      @@geordievillan I agree with your point (I played semi-professional football in the past) , Martinelli actually chose to cover more dangerous zone in that position . The problem with that goal was classical loss of concentration during not obvious positional attack after a corner . It was like a domino effect. Havertz wasn’t aggressive and was silly to let Moreno turn to side line and make that cross (kids level mistake ) , than Saliba let his marker to go behind his back and block that cross (was it Saliba ? Maybe I’m wrong) , then RAYA ( I don’t like him ) was undecided whether to stop the cross or let CBs to clear … and Rice…
      Usually he reads those moments very well .. but that time he didn’t scan space around him well enough… again , I heard people blaming Zinchenko- and that’s silly , during a corner , you do zone defense or individual marking or a mix of both . Zina marked his player , and he couldn’t teleport to his LB position after that corner . It’s the team’s failure not Zinchenko mistake

      The solution is better coaching, better tactics and better management of minutes so your players aren’t completely burned out by this point in the season. Not every problem requires a shopping spree to fix, you’ve got a good team and good players, work with what you’ve got and level up.

      As a Villa fan I absolutely agree with you. I have never understood why Saka for instance plays so many 90 min games and why Arteta doesn't have a comparable player to bring on in that position.
      As an example from a Villa POV, Emery's stated goal is to have 2 players for every position (we aren't there yet...) He will always have a starting 11 but this system allows him to change things at will if at any point something isn't working either tactically, injuries etc. He has confidence that any squad player can take his directions on board quickly and slot in seamlessly as the whole squad knows Emery-ball. Every week he refines this with the team, we're a WIP but we improve as a team, as individuals per coaching every single week.
