BRUSHLESS TAMIYA GRASSHOPPER!? Cheap Brushless Motor and ESC Test #2

- I tested out the cheap brushless motor and esc combo on my tamiya grasshopper. I first tested this out on the traxxas slash but it did not do too well (it was slow). With this cheap brushless rc setup for only $30, we managed to get the brushless tamiya grasshopper to some really top speeds!
Quick review: The tamiya grasshopper is now very fast, making it a lot more fun to use! The cheap brushless setup is holding on strong! I managed to crash this poor grasshopper though ...

For every like this video gets ... the longer this grasshopper gets to live!!! (Also really sucks not having audio for most of my clips so I kept this one short for ya'll)
could be worth getting the tamiya hornet body for it as its lexan instead, lighter & much more flexible then the abs plastic one.
Yep I think it’s definitely time for an upgrade! It pretty much looks as when I first got it 😂
Recently bought an original. I'm upgrading the counter gear in the transmission to an aluminum replacement off of ebay. I love the simple design of the hopper since it makes modifying it easier
I’ll have to look into that, so far it’s held up on the stock internals with just a regrease
@@JacobusRC I think the vendor I ordered it through is Expresshobby on ebay
Great video!! Seriously underrated channel man.
Good test! 😊
Well done, a grasshopper @ 26mph is definitely impressive 👏 👍
18T pinion. And the correct is 0.8 mod. But 32 can work ☺️
Ya know....I've seen the grasshopper 18 tooth 32 pitch stock gears with a brushed motor on 3s lipo go 42 mph...don't count out the 7x2 wind brushed motor on lipo... great video 😃👍
Ah yes, the Tamiya Legends video! I’ll have to hunt for a faster motor and esc combo to see if I can reach his speeds. Thanks for commenting!
That’s a fastest I’ve seen the hopper! 👍 subbed
Thanks brotha, nice vids yourself too
@@JacobusRC thanks mate👍
Cool... Nice sharing
👍🏽👍🏽 thanks
Nice! This is right up my alley so to speak...lol. I think the fastest Hornet is about 45mph. I got my Top Force to 71mph and my TT02 to 97Mph...hahaha😀 I like your videos brother...your editing is really good.
Thanks! I catch your vids sometimes too on the speedruns .. maybe ill get this grasshopper zoomin in the 30s-40s soon haha
@@JacobusRC Right on.. that would be cool...hahaha. Speed runs for me will start back up in a month and a half I'm hoping. 😎🙏🤞
Yes definitely good for a grasshopper uncontrollably fast it seems for most because it’s not set up to go near that fast. I like the idea of pushing it but know I’m probably going to crash it eventually. The shocks and just everything is meant for a 380 ripping threw sand dirt or whatever it’s rugged. I’m a rambling man cool video 👍🏼🇺🇸🍕
Ahhhh you broke my bloody nose ha ha, it looked pretty quick though for only $30 !
Yep Yep, hoping to break 40mph maybe haha (and break the car)
hello & Good day. May i ask where you got your mags & tires? Thanks. Great video!
I bought this grasshopper used, so it came with both. I believe the gold wheels are CRP parts, which are pretty hard to find now. Tires look to be original, you can find easily on ebay I think.
@@JacobusRC oh alright.. kinda hard to look for these parts.. I have the 80’s version of it. But the wheels are already in it’s not the best shape type..
Check out nitro master on eBay he carries every part needed to rebuild the grasshopper an pretty much any tamiya kit.
I get lots of parts from them, good shout
Do you think some drywall mesh and shoe goo to stiffen up the body would help?
I’ve seen people use that to stiffen Lexan RC bodies, but for the older RCs like this Grasshopper with harder plastic bodies, you’re better off using liquid poly cement or plastic weld to reinforce areas
@@JacobusRC thanks! I just bought my child hood rc car on eBay, a Nikko RC Turbo Aero. I’m really torn about leaving it stock or resto-modding it with some hydraulic shocks, a 580 motor or even going with a full brushless set up.
You could always buy two of them and keep one stock and go wild on the other one haha (if you can find another)
@@JacobusRC lol, if I could find another Turbo Aero, I’d buy it in a heartbeat!
@@JacobusRC I now have 6 😏 one thrown together with some hobby grade electronics to figure things out, the next one will be full brushless, hydraulic suspension, and minimal cutting into the body.
I had a clone (academy of minicraft road runner ii) ,i put a parma cyclone 15x2 at start a kit of ball bearings it was really fast.Later i put a king power 16x2 and it achieved 35km/h,thats aprox 20mph.You know back in 80s we had only brushed motors and nimh batteries.
Oh yeah 20mph on this is pretty much flying. Especially back then! Will try to push 30 plus soon - I have nothing to lose!
@@JacobusRC You can achieve it with a brushless setup and lipo battery you just have to put full ball bearings set to differential.
What battery did you use with this car?
Hey man this was a gens ace 2s Lipo 4000mah 45c
Do you have to run LiPO batteries with a brushless motor
Nope you don’t need to, but you’ll get more punch and longer run times if you do go LiPo
@@JacobusRC okay cool thank you I guess I'm just nervous to get into the LiPO batteries
Yeah I was a little scared at first but as long as you are alert while they’re charging and you discharge plus store properly you should be good to go
@@JacobusRC thanks a lot man I appreciate it
Mate if you put lipo 3 in it it will be insane Iv got lipo 3 in my hotshot and it’s stupid fast
Wow big challenge video☆彡☆彡☆彡
Stock 'Hopper comes with 10-tooth... and unless you have an adjustable mount, the only size that can be run with any motor with a 540-sized mount pattern is an 18-tooth. [:\
i have a monster beetle all stock motor etc , 3s esc and 3s lipo runs 20mph
Sweet. The monster beetle is a big beast haha
Dont feel bad about the body... my first rc ever was a grasshopper.. that was 45 years qgo... it broke in the same spot
You have the wrong length screws in the front rims, (Most likely you used the rear wheel screws) that is why the wheels cannot turn freely when installed the the proper way.💫
Hell yeah man that's sweet consider me subscribed
🤙🏽🤙🏽 appreciate it brother
Eye brows 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
use 3s u can run 60kph
No offence but the guy saying 540 brushless motors are for 1/20 is talking nonsense.
Hahaha no problem. it did give me a good chuckle just thinking about a 1/20 scale with the motor
