    I might have told this story in your original post but here goes. This song got me through withdrawals 2 years ago. I got off of opioids after 16 years, on my own, in about a month. I asked no quarter and the poison gave no quarter. Although still dealing with pain, I’m free and feel pretty victorious in my quest.

      Congratulations! It is not easy getting off opioids, it's damn painful and it messed with everything inc. your body temperature. You are one brave warrior.
      I am back on morphine again for pain and am not looking forward to the withdrawals. The first time round was hell on wheels.

    When I was in high school and for many years later, I listened endlessly to Zep, then I moved away and got into other music. Not because I was done with Zep, but they had stopped making music. As Plant said, music is about the present, not to commemorate the past. So true. That being said, many, many years later, I'm listening to Zep again, and that time off and listening to many, many other bands across the decades have confirmed one thing to me. There really never was, is or will be a better band.

    Most drummers play along with the bass guitar but Bonham played to what Page was playing,
    That is why he has all the triplets!

    • @heliotropezzz333
      @heliotropezzz333 Před 4 lety +1

      I was reading somewhere that Peter Grant once (early on) told a reluctant Bonham that if he didn't do what Page wanted he could leave the band (but he used a less polite term for leave). I wonder if this was when Page wanted Bonham to follow his guitar rather than the bass guitar. Your comment just put that into my mind.

    This is one of their center piece songs that directly ties into Lord of the Rings. Robert wrote about the experience of the main characters who took on the quest (they carry news that must through to build a dream for me and you). He makes reference to their decision to brave the mines of Moria (they choose the paths where no one goes). Not Vikings but very close. Please read Lord of the Rings to understand Robert Plant and thereby Led Zeppelin. The Dogs of Doom who are howling are the Wargs who pursued them as they headed for the mountain pass. They were blocked trying to cross over the mountain by a tremendous snow storm (the snow drives back the foot that’s slow). I love your admiration and respect for Zeppelin. Thanks man!!

    I think that the song references J.R.R. Tolkien's lord of the rings series. I think it's about the part where they try to cross the Misty mountains and Salron sends a a blizzard. It's not children but hobbits. They also have a song called Misty mountain hop. Theres a line from the song ramble on "in the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair, but Gollum and the evil one crept up and slipped away with her"

      I agree it gives a Viking vibe including the reference to Thor, but it refers to steel which wasn't invented until the 1850s. I don't think Zep songs have to be logical though. The ambiguity of the songs is often an appealing aspect, because people can use their imagination and put their own interpretation on them.

    • @MrVvulf
      @MrVvulf Před 3 lety

      @@heliotropezzz333 Steel has been around far longer than that. Over 4000 years in fact. And the Vikings most definitely had access to it, as many grave sites which have been excavated attest to. I've always interpreted this song as an ode to the Norse people of the migration era of around 800-1000CE - a mother consoling her children while the men are off trying to carve out a space for them in what is now the UK. When you mention the 1850s, I think you must be referring to industrial steel production, but crucible steel itself as a tool of war for swords and armor was already well established for 1000+ years.

      @@allanobrien1964 I know they've been sued for plagiarism and I thought they'd now resolved those cases (through the courts) and credited original songwriters where due. There are issues where they've taken a song and changed it, (lyrics or music) so that original writers/composers get only partial credit. That seems fair, though it may not satisfy everyone. You know lots of original blues singers sung each others songs. Not all Zeppelin music is covers. They started off covering a lot of blues music, but when Plant started writing his own songs, they were unique, and Page has produced a lot of original music. You know Shakespeare didn't write many original stories (if any) but he's still acknowledged as a great storyteller, dramatist, poet and wordsmith. It's not always about what you have, but also about what you do with it. Tool seem to copy a lot of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd music or at least are very influenced by it.
