“The first time I saw Led Zeppelin was in 1973. They came straight out and into Rock and Roll. ‘Bang, I hit you, right between the eyes!’
John Bonham was living up to his reputation as Rock's most powerful drummer, Jimmy Page was duck walking across the stage firing out these incendiary guitar lines, and Robert Plant, let's be honest, probably didn't require any amplification at all on that colossal voice. Stage left was John Paul Jones playing bass, slightly in the background almost like he didn't belong there. I started to focus, to zone in on his playing, and it dawned on me how huge his contribution was to this powerhouse of a band. At times he would be holding down the rhythm, seemingly locked into Bonham's snare and bass drums as well as mirroring perfectly Bonzo's drum fills. Then he would join Paige on those classic riffs, but there was variation.
At various times he would really attack those strings adding a percussive part to underpin Page's guitar. Then he would play these little improvised runs, but the genius here was he chose his notes, he kept it simple, clean, and he didn't interfere with what Page or Plant were doing as a more busy a bassist might have. Jones would also play just in front of the beat, pushing the music along or a hair's breath behind that beat. A bit like Keith Richards does for the Stones. Playing behind the beat gives the music swing and a kind of primal funkiness. As the concert progressed John Paul switched to keyboards eerie electric piano for ‘No quarter’ melotron, and organ for ‘Stairway to Heaven’, and a killer organ solo on ‘Thank you’, all the while playing tourist base pedals beneath those keyboards. I left the venue that night in awe of the man.”
Many experts say that John Paul Jones, as a musician, was the greatest genius of them all, and I don't mean just his bandmates. It appears to me, that the more of a musician you are, the more you appreciate his colossal talent and contribution to Rock and to music as a whole.

I cannot possibly put into words the amount of joy and sheer happiness these four gentlemen have brought into my life. How can one ever repay such a thing, is a question I often ask myself…
I have lived long enough to witness innumerous extremely talented musicians and bands, with impeccable technique and artistry, but Rock/Music delivered with heart and soul like Led Zeppelin I am yet to see.
As a fan, I feel grateful and blessed to have come across the “Led Zeppelin experience”.
To share it, I believe, is not only a duty but an obligation. Every human has the right to know Led Zeppelin.

The best musician here is the group itself. THAT is the hallmark of any great music group. They become one.
The Beatles were the absolute best example of that. Aside from Lennon & McCartney as the 20th centuries most successful songwriting team the genius was in the combination of the four musicians. When they played, none stood out individually because they each subjugated themselves to the music. It was the music that always came first.
It would be too easy to get carried away by Pages musicianship, and it's understandable to get caught up in that, but Zeppelins genius was in the alchemy that took place when they played together.
They were all great musicians in their own right but together they were greater than the sum of their parts.
So, who's the best musician here? Led Zeppelin!

Their music has been cherry picked by others like filmmakers so that's why only those songs are most widely known. Brilliant musicians at the forefront of their time.

Why Led Zeppelin is still being admired by even the younger generations, is simply because these are serious and extremely skillfull musicians. Each member would be a master in his own area, but the rare thing is that together they are even more then the sum. And then they create music,like no other band has before or after them, playing with all possible genres and fluently mix them into a really unique signature.
We've all heard (and love) SIBLY, that's evident. How about giving it up for STB and his outstanding reaction and analysis.

Never assume or have a fixed picture of a band. i did the same thing about Led Zep. i was always aware of them and knew they were a great band but i thought people were going overboard saying they were the best band ever but after seeing since ive been loving you live at msg and hearing You Shook Me. i absolutely get it
When I was 17 they came to San Diego...I was a huge fan...June 1977...the best concert I ever saw though they and myself were pretty drugged out by then...a month later Plants son suddenly died from a stomach virus at 5 years old...they cancelled tour and went home never to tour US again...I remember being heart broken for him but so lucky to have seen them live...Great review!

Back to Led Zeppelin and "Since I've Been Loving You". It never fails to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I've been a LZ fan for a little under 40 years. I've not been listening to them for a good while and you've got me back into them in a big, big way. Your views on the musicianship of that song is among the best I've ever heard. Dude, check the live '73 version! This was always meant to be live...they had a hard time containing this in the studio. I've had whole stacks of their bootlegs, and "Since I've Been Loving You" is always the measure of where they are, musically
I'm sure by now you have probably found out most of what I will touch on here for yourself. Actually, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones were a little older than Bonham and Plant. Both Page and Jones had a studio career prior to getting involved with the band scene - that's how Page was involved with the Who, Kinks and so many other big named acts during the first half of the 60s. This is also where and when he learned all of the recording and production techniques prevalent on virtually every LZ album. Page was getting tired of the studio musician life and was already friends with Jeff Beck when a sudden opening for a bass player opened up in the Yardbirds and Page swooped right in. For awhile both Beck and Page were together on guitar duty and are even seen doing Train Kept'a Rollin in the original version of Blow Up (I think that's the movie name) - Beck smashes a guitar in this scene. Shortly after Beck left the band, then Page moved to the front. Then over some time, the Yardbirds began to fall apart and there are several version of how this actually happened, but Jimmy Page ended up holding onto the upcoming previously scheduled dates.
Page already knew Jones from the studio days, so that is where Page started putting the band together. Further, at this time apparently Peter Grant had recently come on board to be the manager of the Yardbirds and this is where Page and Grant became close associates - this is every bit as important to the success of Led Zeppelin as any of the other members, btw. From here, Page was on the lookout for a singer and got word of Robert Plant. Page heard him, liked Plant and offered him a position. Plant and Bonham were already great friends, and were playing together at this point. Plant told Page all about Bonham, and of course Bonham was offered the role of drummer. Once this group was solidified, they became the "New Yardbirds" and later, after a suggestion from either Keith Moon or John Entwistle of the Who, they landed on Led Zeppelin. I'm sure you already know the rest of the story.

My buddy's dad spent eleven years learning to play this song in this way. He didn't have the joints in his hand like Page, so that was part of it, but the bigger part was the passion. This was a grown man who had spent eleven years working on this and still admitted to not having mastered it, a song Page played as a weekend gig. It's so mind-blowing amazing, but then hearing about the background even for THAT is even more incredible.

It’s funny to go back and watch this after following you the last few months and listening to bootlegs with you and only seeing the fan you became instantly. You have mentioned this reaction several times so I finally went back and watched it. Cool how you “got it” immediately. Hoping you find some more bootlegs to do because I have not heard most of those either despite being a lifelong fan
