    The recent season of Rick and Morty taught us about the value of snake jazz and a good heist film, but can Morty's unhealthy crush and Rick's private toilet planet teach us anything about the inevitability of death? Let's find out in this episode of A Philosopher Reacts to Rick and Morty Season Four.

    “Why would we fear death we haven’t experienced it,” is classic classroom argument nonsense. It sounds good in class but has no application to truth. We have all seen death, we have seen people we love struggle and fight against death only to fail and die alone in abject terror.
    So why do we fear death? Because we have seen other people experience it and not many of them seem to enjoy it.

    • @kunoRochat3
      @kunoRochat3 Před 3 lety +2

      No one's arguing the fight against death hasn't been experienced. Something more related to the conversation is if perhaps one were to consider that people who have been "declared dead" and after a couple minutes or in some cases hours of being dead come back to life through medical intervention, that those people have experienced death.
      The application to the truth as it affects how they live their life still won't be changed if they had or hadn't experienced it. Death is the final end of experience, the ultimate termination of one's existence. Pains, terror, and struggles are trivial in comparison to the complexities of properly reconciling this truth.
      That being said it is still most rational to not fear an inevitable of unknown consequence, but what I've come to understand about existentialist philosophy is that it is an attempt to do whats right in circumstances where rationality fails and no one else can help. You're effectively missing the point of a statement from people who missed the point of the question

    So he built a giant humiliation toilet scene ready to harass Tony. He put time and energy into it, something he just doesn’t do for other people.
    That’s why he went to the trouble of delivering food that would make Tony super poo. That’s why he went to Tony’s funeral. That’s why he sat alone mournfully on the throne of loneliness he created for Tony.

    The whole "death gives meaning to life" thing just seems like a different form of denial to me.
    Death sucks so fucking much that it's understandable that people would come up with some soothing coping mechanisms, but it really annoys me when people tell me that life wouldn't be valuable without death. I'll decide on the value of my existence on my own, thank you very much, and I decided that my life is meaningful even without some arbitrary limitation on it's duration.

    • @nanabonsu2349
      @nanabonsu2349 Před 3 lety

      I agree with that statement because if life has no end then eventually you'll develop into a state of ennui because there is no urgency to accomplish anything. I view it as more of a coping mechanism for life rather than one for death.
      Also, we don't know that death sucks because none of us know what death is like
