In Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender (S03E04), Rick and Morty lampoons Marvel movies and other huge superhero franchises. But is the show going one step further? Is Rick really a stand-in for villains like The Joker, hellbent on crushing peoples' worldviews and spreading the 'cheer' disillusionment? What, really, is the POINT of Rick's sick game?

Rick’s point is that none of you are special or different. That’s always his point.
Morty, how many times do I have to tell you? I’m a drunk, not a hack.
Remember he's basically a genius spouting nihilistic quotes out of frustration ........however not that rick is ever wrong.
Awww geez
Rick Sanchez fangirling right now!!! xoxo
Well, to quote the Mob Psycho 100 theme: "Do you need to feel special to be ok?"
I mean, there's this underlying assumption that uniqueness is inherently good and leads to a more satisfying existence than sharing some kind of quality with another person
Reminds me of the Watchmen. They kill millions "to save billions" and kill Rorschach to keep the secret.
raven lord that's why batman and superman are good hero's batman with never kill not even to save innocents or self defence. And superman my powers don't but me above the law. They won't kill one to save millions
Superman will...
raven lord I'm sure you guys have watched it, but the Batman v. Superman Ayn Rand analysis on Wisecrack is in this vein.
Steven Bullefer not if it is illegal he should be judged by the same or higher standards than lex or a normal American citizen
MRCKify batman vs superman was the worst film ever and the worst adaptation ever batman killing constantly lex not acting like lex superman being so boring krytonite is over used etc
Fun fact: This is exactly the 10th adventure since they made that deal.
Of the adventures they talked about
@@play_station_kid5997 and that we know about
I did wonder that but i was too lazy to check
Fuck it imma count thanks for cureing my boredom
Might be the 2nd or 3rd card lol
I actually like how this season morty does not seem to be getting that disillusioned with the world...but instead fed up with what Rick tells him about the world...i mean he is just getting tired of listening to the same nihilist shit over and over again...i think he already gets it...he just does not care...also he is getting dangerously smart
Firegodot
Good observation.
"If you live long enough as a Morty, you eventually become a Rick."
I can personally tell you that a nihilistic view of life gets super boring after a while. Just make some shit up to make you feel better. Life don't have any meaning? Who gives a shit? Just give it your own meaning.
Similar to Mr. Peanut butter from Bojack Horseman he's the anti-nihilist to Rick. Nothing matters - so what? Who cares? Lets go watch tv. That's what I love about his character.
Niom life is what you make it ha
Yeah but now he sucks.. he has no special personality, everyone's just turning into rick..
After watching vindicators 2, this episode has a totally different story
Yeah, it hits harder, and is pretty effed up.
Come on bruh. We know it any was sus...

It makes me laugh that they seek the senseless destruction of zack snyder as an example of rick being right about the superhero
What episode is vindicators 2.?
I think Morty is the center between those two poles and the moral backbone of the show. He's losing his innocent child like perspective of perfect good and perfect evil, but as it was shown in pickle Rick, he seems to be the only one willing to put in the "work" of a meaningful life. I'm the most excited to see Morty's development throughout the rest of the season.
I know! We can see that he's not the same as ss1 and 2, now that he's not "innocent" anymore and has to bear some burdens
Carlisle Huntington i
@OP:
Agreed. Morty's development has been a deeply intriguing arc, to say the least.
I agree with this. I think Morty is pretty underappreciated generally, which to me is pretty reflective of human intellectualism. While Rick and philosophers run themselves into nihilistic ruts with no solution, Morty and people who lack interest in fully understanding nihilism are their foils by acting despite nihilists telling them there's no point. I use this example a lot: theoretically, you could try to close a door forever and never actually close it if you infinitely halve the distance the door moves each time. In the physical world, however, this just isn't possible, and it's a total waste of energy trying to. You can logic any meaning out of anything and humanity will always and forever act oppisite of your logic, simply because not doing so causes cognitive dissonance. That human impulse is literally something you have no control over, and people like Morty simply accept it and live with the meaning they have assigned to their life, because why live at all if there is no point. As such, I think Morty will have a huge roll to play in Rick's arc and vice versa.
Or maybe Rick and Morty is just supposed to be a black comedy that people are taking too seriously, also there are no good arguments for nihilism that is what the show is mocking. Rick is shown praying to God in the season 2 premiere when his life is on the line.
*_"It's like you said Morty. There's No Right or Wrong."_*
Morty: *_"Never Said That."_*
"Stop looking for hidden layers
just be impressed"- Rick Sanchez
"20 people try to kill me every two weeks and half of them I get high with them" -Rick
Didn't even touch upon the joke about how it wasn't morty rick cared about.
blueicer101 God Daaaamn!
DaleCooper Rick specifically mentioned that He cared about Noob Noob because he was the only one to laugh at his jokes so the ride was clearly made for him.
I am disgusted that they didn't even mention Noob Noob in this video, he is like, the coolest guy in the universe!
Eli N.S but Rick says at the end "who the fuck is noob noob?"
DaleCooper Not exactly. Justin tweeted out a cut line "I love all 98 pounds of you Noob Noob" so the machine accepted morty because he was 98 pounds too.
blueicer101 that really has nothing to do with everything. It was just a gag. You could tell when he gets back and they just take off and Morty doesn't want to talk about it. He was just tired of fixing all the traps.
They are more like the Guardians of the Galaxy rather than the Avengers. Ghost Train = Drax, Supernova = Gamora, Vance = Star-Lord, RoboCroc = Rocket Raccoon, Million Ants = Groot.
It's a mixture that spans the genre. Ghost Train = John Henry Irons (Or maybe John Stewart's Green Lantern because of the green energy constructs), Supernova = Starfire (A supernova is an exploding star, hence Starfire), Million Ants = Antman (I shouldn't have to explain this one), Vance Maximus = Starlord (also self explanatory), Crocubot I'm not sure about but could be either Rocket Raccoon or Cyborg. I'm leaning towards Cyborg because of his appearance though. Give it a space setting for an obvious Guardians reference and the fact that Vindicators and Avengers are synonyms and you have a team up that pokes fun at both sides of the isle.
i figured vance was tony stark flying in a robot suit drinking martinis
it looks like a cross between mcu avengers and suicide squad. killer croc and crocobot (crocobot red eye like deadshot). hero deaths of lady katana, Diablo verde & calypso are like katana, enchantress & so Diablo. and then the obvious avengers tropes
`+TylerDurden420247 thank you im not the only one who noticed that
Yeah, but Avengers or Justice League makes the better example. The Guardians are, themselves, grey area heroes. They're thieves, assassins, criminals... they don't pretend to be pure good, which actually undermines the point of the episode. That's why most analysts go to the Avengers or JL when referencing the episode.
This is just a small thing I picked up on in the Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender. If its already been said sorry! When they go defuse the bomb and Rick asks him about it and Morty says too many. Remember in the Pilot ep that it was a drunk Rick who passed out and the same type of bomb was made. So maybe thats the start of Morty getting practice.
Andrea T maybe he defused the bomb in the pilot
@Firehawk Amvs In some universes yes, others no.
ahahhsg yeah that's right. but im pretty sure that rick and morty's world ended there.d
You could have done the philosophy of Saw featuring Rick and Morty
Like in the Purge
God that was such a kick-ass episode.
And they still can, as this is just an episode recap, not a full 'philosophy of' video.
This
I believe Rick was using noob noob as a way to be emotional towards morty without actually saying it since he doesn't want to admit he really cares about morty👌👌👌 Rick obviously was bothered by Morty's love and idolization of the vindicators
Edit:Did not expect this much attention 😂😂😂thanks guys
Negro Otaku I thought the same
Cory the Norm exactly i think the noob noob thing was just to fuck with us😂😂😂 especially since Rick said he don't even know he tf noob noob is💀💀
Rick- J420 did not expect such a quick reply😂😂😂but exactly Rick even say so and he was being dead ass honest about it
That would be a complete break in Rick's character.
Negro Otaku Noooo!! Noob noob is the best
When Rick realized that he forgot his portal gun to bail out.. HE KNEW HE FUCKED UP lmao 😂😂😂
There's just no pleasing anyone in these comments.
Everyone is pleased with being unpleased, its why they argue.
Somehow the fucks are bringing in politics to a fucking rick and morty introspection.
I don't expect much from things, thus I'm rarely disappointed.
That because you don't want to use your mouth to do so, now get on your knees and get to work! XD
William Palkow why cant we not have critism wouldnt that be great
Some people aren't liking this "New Rick and Morty" because the show is touching some of the most emotional parts of Rick, Morty, Beth, Summer and Jerry characters and is becoming more family-centered. I personally love it because it shows there is more to Rick and Morty than just fighting space aliens and go on wacky adventures. I'm sure Mr. Poopybutthole would agree on this. *I never intended to cause a nipple race war in the comment section (replies) below*
Bongo Supreme
You seem to be the pretentious one...
Bongo Supreme Someone's salty.
Yeah sure they are, but it's forced and honestly cliche.
If they had wanted to keep the "family-centered" vibe for this latest episode, they'd have made the Vindicators a Fantastic Four type of team. But that sort of critique would have seemed more like picking on the nerd with no friends instead of knocking the popular kids down a peg.
I feel like Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon have seen that people like the philosophy aspect of the show, and the gore aspect. So, instead of writing actual good episodes, they fill them with gore and spoonfed philosophy as opposed to just writing a good episode. Honestly, I don't think any of the existential and nihilistic aspects of the show were intentional up until this season. Harmon and Roiland realized that people really liked their unintentional creation, and have ran with it. Instead of writing the show like the characters actually act, they now spoon feed you nihilistic themes. It's forced and unfunny. Reddit and Wisecrack ruined Rick and Morty by over analyzing it.
My favorite part of this episode is how they released a behind the scenes opinion from the crew who made the episode, and they were all like "oh Worldender is the biggest baddy of all time, he worse than Thanos or Apocalypse" but then you watch it and you realize they just baited you into believing that worldender was a real threat (like a traditional superhero film with a bad guy) when in reality the main character of the show truly was more dangerous than the most evil villain of all time, and you never actually see Worldender be bad cause hes dead lol.
That video elevates the episode
I just realized something. Go to 6:13
Super Nova: "It's like you said, Morty, There is no right or wrong."
Morty: "I never said that."
Could Evil Morty (from Close Rick-Counters of the Rick Kind) be the one she was talking about there?
He did say that Rick destroyed the lines between the villains and heroes. It's not a stretch Nova would intepret that as Morty saying there is no good or evil. Which is not what he said, nor what he believes
Nice catch! She could also just be paraphrasing.
No.
Rick basically spat on every super hero movie ever made
Except the Dark Knight.
To be fair, Thanos's perspective exists
This episode came out the same time My hero academia started getting popular, and my then anime obsessed gf at the time wouldn't stop bothering me to go watch it. After showing her this episode of R&M she started hating anime as a whole lol
@@Tempus0ptic Wow, a single episode flipped her passion for anime. Pretty drastic. Some might say, total blitzkrieg
@@vincentmathias7676 She still watches it, but with a more cynical outlook. Everytime she comes across something basic, boring and cliche tropes she just watches something else
And this is why i have no idea why people are saying this season sucks so far. Im really starting to think that its just to sound edgy and different
The only episode I was disappointed with was this last one, wasn't bad but I just expected more.
GeminiJoule season 3 is the best season so far love it
Graublitz what was the comment?
it's still good, just less good, too much rick, lazy writing and gore
The people saying it sucks are just low-life hipsters that probably write essays ranting about politics in the fucking CZcams comments section.

All I keep hearing is about how people don't like this episode, but I haven't really seen anyone say why it's the "weakest one"
Tokyo Working Man it was a really good episode. Especially at the end lol
Tokyo Working Man From what I can remember, there was no B-plit. This to me made the A-plot feel unneccesarily stretched.
No, the B plot is usually going on in a different location, with different things happening. It might be some-what related to the A plot but it's always different.
In Meeseeks and Destroy: Jerry and Beth with the Meeseeks --- Rick and Morty with the Jelly Bean rapist.
I completely agree, we are used to there being a B plot and when there isn't, we feel like something is missing.

Shout-out to Jared who clearly put a lot of thought into what nerdy t-shirt to wear in this video about comics and how to properly make fun of them
We're talkin' about the morality of the situation, right? Just wanted to be clear, it's a cool point.
Anyone else annoyed they used Socrates' image when talking about Plato's noble lie? Even more annoying is that in the image they used, Plato is standing next to Socrates, but was cropped out
It's episodes like this that just really make me appreciate Watchmen even more as a superhero comic. I love anything that delves deep into the morality of superheroes (or just morality in general) and if what they do is truly good or evil.

Tested Meathead Yes! Black Mirror besides Rick and Morty is the shit! The episode, White Bear is a good example of what is being talked about in this video.
This.
yay another white bear fanatic. there was something special about that episode. it was rick and morty level
Who is here after watching the vindicators series?
I got more of a "Guardians of the Galaxy" parody vibe than the "Avengers." Groot was the ant-guy. Obviously, Star-Lord was Christian Slater's character, etc. And it was all in space.

This is really beautiful Criticism. You've taken some of the absolute best examples of moral grayness and woven them together in a really poignant way. And in doing so, you've really explained the unique cultural issues we're dealing with in this historical moment.

love this series guys, hope you continue doing it !!
Thanks Wisecrack! keep doing Rick and Morty Stuff. It helps me appreciate it even more!!
As a fan of Rick & Morty, I really love this series. I don't mind that you guys are obsessing over one show, considering it's the best Science Fiction tv series since Star Trek: TNG.
This show was always complex. People don't understand that the show was always dark and emotional even if it wasn't obvious to see. You could argue that every episode has some sort of lesson or deep meaning to it. This is by far the greatest cartoon of its kind.
Hi Jared (and all the people working on this), about 3 weeks ago I saw the first review of this season. In the comments I said I hoped these 'quicker responding video'-posts about more recent media would not mean that the quality of this channel would go down. But being 4 episodes far in reviewing the new Rick and Morty season I have to say that I'm really happy with what you are making these, they contain really good in depth analyses and great parallels that make the gears of my grey matter rattle (not only in a squanchy gearhead way). So to sum it up: thanks for the great work you guys do!
PS: I'm enjoying 'The Squanch' a lot !

I really like this style of video, works super well for the weekly Rick and Morty eps
Amazing videos as always Jared. Why do you think people keep calling Morty "learning disabled/dumb" when he is clearly very socially intelligent?
His heart is in the right place. People mistake that for stupidity all of the time.
Ugh Okay wow, this is exactly it. Benevolence is seen as stupid or ignorant sometimes.
Morty's brains are see all the way back in this exchange: (no claim to recall dialogue, just the gist)
R: "..microscope would have made me retarded."
M: "I don't think you're supposed to say that Rick.
R: "I wasn't slamming the differently abled, Morty. I'm just saying..."
M: " I don't think it has anything to do with insults; it's more like powerful groups want to police what we say."
R: "Well that's retarded."
Morty is not socially intelligent. Social Intelligence is the ability to successfully build relationships and navigate social environments. What successful relationships does Morty have? No friends and a broken family. His closest relationship is with Rick, who is high abusive to Morty.
MRCKify - Morty's last line wasn't so harsh, It was "I don't think it is about logic. The word has become a symbolic issue for powerful groups who think they are doing the right thing"... R: "Well that's retarded."
Don't mean to be that guy, but you said that in every single superhero movie, there's a pure evil character, but in Spider-man Homecoming, the Vulture is just a guy trying to provide for his family by stealing from the guy who screwed him over. It's almost a little hard to fully call him a villain.
In his defense, Homecoming is a fairly recent movie.
I went through and liked all your videos, because I love y'all
I have a new theory on the point of the Vindicaters episode. We see Rick pretty much destroy everything and keep being right. Rick is basically a God. Season 3 was reinforcing how powerful Rick was.
So how shocking will it be when Rick fails? I think hes going be defeated in a big way.
did yall see that little dog? @ 0:13

Wisecrack bottom right
jo mo mo A Dog's Purpose
I think the balance between moral nihilism and (faux or otherwise) moral absolutism has to do with the moral agent (so let's put aside the political intricacies) having both agency and coherence. If the moral agent has no agency, whether because the world is ultimately deterministic or because there cannot be individual responsibility for doing things deemed evil, then he or she has no reason to uphold moral standards, or even to take to time to reflect upon the ones he or she was taught. Agency, and ubiquitously conscience and responsibility, are, I think, the foundations of egotism -- egotism which leads to empathy and compassion when the individual recognizes egotism in others (yes, I will not unwrap this more here).
With this process comes the will to power, the will to not only win the hobbesian naturalistic game of power, but to conquer the minds of others by imposing your mores. The only thing missing is coherence, in essence the capacity to fully reflect on your actions and the inherent (and contingent) responsibility. To realize the kantian paradigm of reason (or socratic, if you believe he existed), which proscribes contradiction in reason. That said, let's not forget that the german clockwork-man also wrote that no idea, or philosophy, can be set in stone. It's all about the process, consequently both moral nihilism and moral absolutism are to be rejected for they try to establish a final answer to the questions of what is good and what is evil. To reject them not because they are factually wrong, but because they are the death of thinking.
Where are the videos for the last two episodes??? Love your commentary on the new episodes!
I really like this series. I hope we get more of it.
I REALLY need a Philosophy of Youjo Senki (Saga of Tanya the Evil) soon. Please papa Wisecrack, Deus lo Vult!
watchmen references any one?
Did Jared not make one? Woow, in my head i heard he did.
Samuel Oliveira what watchmen references are made?
nah. watchmen deconstructed showing the true purpose of ozimandia´s plan. rick and morty just want to shit on something in order to not feel guilty because they dont have what is necessary to reach "heroes" status.
Samuel Oliveira aye! Through the reveal & confrontation of their wrongdoings, it becomes clear they're to blame for at least one large-scale atrocity. No one can vindicate the Vindicators (they are not worthy of vindication).
pedro henrique You mean killing a god? That's all a hero is meant to do.
Rick went like Heath Ledgers Joker on this episode, and proved very valid points. Ps bad ass shirt you have.
More videos, please. Love your rick and morty videos.
I'm surprised no one mentions the postcredits joke. How gearhead uses the jacket to look like a hero, then runs away from danger just to get injured from running.
Think Watchmen made a much better argument about being morally grey than Dark Knight ever did.
Who's here after Vindicators 2?
Hey wisecrack! Love the content! Could you do the philosophy of Bo Burnham??
I would love if you and the wisecrack staff could do this for the upcoming season of south park, either a podcast, or a weekly video for each episode. These videos and the podcast are making rick and morty more engaging
Noob Noob is my hero
morty im a drunk not a hack
By the way, just watched old episodes (end of s1, up to s02e06) last night after watching the vindicators episode, and spotted a crocodile in a crowd that looked just like crocobot sans robotics. Can't find it now, and no mention of it in the Rick & Morty wikis, but it's there! (possibly Mortynight run = s02e02 = goodbye moon men episode). If you find him, please comment the episode and time
The way he explained good vs evil is really good. That’s why I like the movie the last samurai because the lines of good and evil change.
The point is don't think about it.
I think drunk Rick is my new favorite character!
Hey @Wisecrack, I don't know if you have made the video for "The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy" yet. But one thing I picked up intensely was Morty becoming more like Rick. And the parallel of Summer and Ethan to Beth and Jerry. I don't know whether its repetition of the past or learned behaviors that make these characters seem to be progressing that way.
Looking forward to the next video. Thanks for the awesome content.
where are the breakdowns for the other two episodes? Will there be any?

I was thinking of that line where Vance says 'just know the difference between good and evil and root for good.' It reminded me of the opposite of what Mike says in Better Call Saul; and I paraphrase 'sometimes good people don't mean to do bad things, but they end up in that situation.'
Whoa!! I didn’t that coming anywhere! Nice job!

I'm sure im not the first to notice this, but holy crap!!! Meseeks and Destroy is the episode in which Morty earns the right to choose 1/10 adventures! Was thinking that this may be another hint at the connected theme (i.e. The crushing of Morty's dogmatic belief system).

why I appreciate your point that in the face of ultimate Evil, any other evil done to stop it is seen as a means to an end a minor evil or perhaps not even in evil at all given the consequences of failure to stop the ultimate one.
however the superhero genre (at least the one presently being fashioned by Marvel) rarely, if ever let's the hero's make these 'minor' evils. even to the point of being a illogical (spoilers: avengers infinity war) see: the avengers refusal to accept the sacrifice of vision, and strange refusal to let Tony stark die.
