My Review of the GMW-B5000D G-Shock Full Metal Square

  • This full metal G-Shock Square was first released about four years ago but I avoided buying at first simply because it was so much more costly than G-Shock Squares made with resin materials. But, after a long time thinking about it and tracking the price trends, I decided that 2022 was the year that I would finally buy one. As it stands, this is now one of the less-costly metal G-Shock Squares, since Casio has introduced some models with more exotic colors and/or made with higher grade titanium. Some of those have also been limited editions, which always seems to increase the price.
    This model uses module 3459. (A full user manual is available for download from Casio's website.) The main features of this module are Tough Solar (to effortlessly charge the watch's power supply using solar power), Multiband 6 (to automatically synchronize the watch with "Atomic Clock Time") and a Bluetooth connectivity which interacts with the Casio Connected app on a smart phone or tablet. The app allows the watch to synchronize to "Atomic Clock Time" in areas of the world where Multiband 6 reception is not available and/or in places where radio interference might make Multiband 6 difficult to use anyway. The app also allows the user to make certain adjustments to the watch settings in a way which is usually faster and easier than an entire sequence of pushing buttons on the watch itself. But please keep in mind that you don't HAVE to use the app in order to use this watch. There's really only one significant thing which the app provides which is not available on the watch itself, and that's an indication of whether the battery is charged in a low, medium or high state.
    The less-costly, resin versions of the Bluetooth Squares operate in the same way this one does. The only real difference between the modules used is that this one has a "Super Twisted Nematic" LCD. The STN display gives a slightly higher contrast than the regular LCD and allows the user to view the display more clearly at a variety of viewing angles.
    Other useful features include five easily-accessed time zones in the World Time mode, a 24-hour stopwatch, a 24-hour countdown timer, five daily alarms (one of which is a Snooze alarm), an hourly chime, A selection of languages for the day of the week abbreviation, an automatic LED backlight option, two different duration settings for the backlight, the ability to select a M.DD or DD.M display for the month and date on the main mode, AND a date-based reminder which can be customized using the G-Shock Connected app.
    And, if you REALLY want to go in depth about the G-Shock Connected App, go to the following video and skip to the middle of it. • G-Shock GW-B5600 (GMWB...

    I bought the B5000 2 years ago. And a year later I got myself a 5610. I found out that I wear that one a whole lot more than the B5000. It's just so much more comfortable to wear. And I just dig that retro look. I never used the bluetooth function.

      @jemandthemystery Před rokem +1

      Similar position here. I have the black metal version of this series. There is a special coating on the black version that makes it more resistant to wear and tear so mine still looks (mostly) new. I also have the updated version of the 5610. It’s lighter and has the positive display (the black metal has a negative display). The module in the 5610u (3495) is now on par with the black metal 5000 series (bluetooth aside of course) so they are more or less identical function for function. I wear them equally depending on mood or activity. One other thing: In snowy, cold weather it is the resin 5610u every time. The metal 5000 never warms up on the wrist.

    Full metal square is very nice. Good finishing and details, also the bracelet is amazing. I also have an MT-G B2000, and an MR-G B1000. In these watches you don't only pay for the features in the module. You pay for the specila materials and the craftsmanship. Each MT-G and MR-G watch is assebled by hand, and most of the components for the watch are built/machined there to a very high standard. It is watchmaking at a very high level, and i believe you get what you pay for. But ofc the roots of G-Shock is in the affordable beater watches. But they do both luxury and beater very well.

    I never payed full retail, they were all secondhand at around half price.

    I am glad you did this video, was interested your take on the metal square. I actually snagged one this year for a great deal, a bit lower than 350 brand new, and had my thoughts on it. I also have a gw-b5600 with the midnight green variation, and after seeing your video on that as well, I put that on a V1 combi bracelet. It is my most worn watch, even though I own many mechanicals and swiss made ones as well. However, I am now selling my metal square, it just doesn't make any sense now. It is quite heavy and bit bulkier, and although it looks good (I've actually went to a wedding with it), it just not gets enough wrist time anymore. For me, the looks and feel of a good square has become GW-B5600MG-1 with the v1 combi.

      I know that G-Shocks and other Casio watches are relatively inexpensive compared to a lot of other brands. And I know I often say that the price makes a certain watch a good candidate to be a "beater" watch. But I still have a tendency to want them all to remain in mint condition. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. But that's also the nice thing about watch collecting. Everyone can do it their own way and I'm okay with that!

    A GMW-B5000, this is where my bank balance goes to die. Now I'm not in the market for titanium G-Shocks, they are way out of my league to even seriously consider and by extension a $70000 solid gold G-Shock. However, I have purchased two stainless steels so far, a GMW-B5000RD-4 (burgundy) and a GMW-B5000PB-6 (violet), also known as the _Tokyo Twilight_ . I'd like a GMW-B5000GD-4 (rose gold) and a GMW-B5000G (blue) to complete my set.
    Why the blue never came with a blue stainless steel band, only Casio can answer that, but it is disappointing. I would probably get a genuine plain stainless steel band and get it ion-plated blue to match. This opens up color options for ion-plating a GMW-B5000D to anything you like.

    I wish they hadn’t taken the battery indicator off the watch. When I first got mine it wouldn’t show above 50% on the app no matter long how I left it in the light. I couldn’t tell if it was an error in the app or a defective watch. If they ran out of screen space the should’ve made it a menu option or simply use a smaller icon.
