Does anemia cause sugar problems - definitely but it is a technical problem not a REAL problem

  • The connection between anemia and sugar problems, arises because of the way sugar problems are typically tracked. The test your doctor will be doing to spot blood glucose problems, is the HbA1c test. The principle of the test is that it uses red blood cell exposure to glucose, as a proxy for “vulnerable” cell exposure to glucose. And this is it’s Achilles heel. If there is something not quite right with the red blood cell contingent, the test can give misleading results.
    In this video I explain the biology behind the fail, using two relatively common scenarios. The first being iron deficiency anemia and the second being what is termed a haemolytic anemia - these are anemias where the red blood cells are prone to lyse (break), they’re typically caused by “bad” genes.

    It is unfortunate that many medical professionals talk about anemia as an iron deficiency, as if anemia=iron deficiency. Anemia takes other forms (B12, Folate), and to confuse one anemia with another is troublesome. Pernicious anemia (autoimmune-caused B12 deficiency) gives false high A1C results. I wish I understood why, as you have pointed out here it is not good to be making health decisions based on faulty lab results. A family physician will rarely understand the pernicious anemia impact on A1c, and will rarely order other-than-A1c labs to provide a more accurate picture of insulin/glucose health.

    I have Thallasemia b minor trait. I struggle with high blood especially in the mornings. Type 2 on insulin. Diet is good, lowish carb. Does the trait affect iron?

    • @Betterbodychemistry
      @Betterbodychemistry  Před 4 měsíci

      The trait is associated with mild anemia with red blood cells being smaller than normal due to decreased hemaglobin synthesis.

    What about this scenario? 13.1 hgb, 26.0 MCH, 6.1 A1C, 100 glucose fasting in a 48 years old men. Perhaps my A1C is being affected by low levels of mch?

    • @Betterbodychemistry
      @Betterbodychemistry  Před 2 měsíci

      On paper a low MCH could have the same impact. Less hemoglobin to glycate, shifting the ratio. It would be unusual to have low MCH with normal hemoglobin.........so it is unlikely that this has ever been looked at/considered.

      @@Beauty_dogs_love thank you for sharing that.That explains so much.I'm anemic& I believe I'm pre diabetic.The only problem is the Doctors here wait until you have an illness instead of helping you prevent it.Long term meds is the goal.
