  • Welcome back to LEGO investing for beginners! This is episode 4 where I talk about when the right time is to buy LEGO sets for investing! It is often our temptation as LEGO investors to buy sets on or near their release day but in this video I talk about why that practice should be avoided and what you should look for when it comes LEGO investing and when is the right time to buy!

Hi Jake. Just subbed from South-Africa. Found your channel today. I literally have 1 Lego set. Bought it week ago and it ignited something. I had no idea these days just the amazing stuff they bring out. (I'm an 80s kid so I lost touch when Lego was literally just rudimentary bricks.) youtt channel is super informative since its difficult to use info here in South-Africa regarding anything buying / selling / etc since we're such a different market. But, you have some important points that can set me on the road to get some of the sets I really want. Starting with BTTF Delorean hehe. 🎉

Another great, smart and responsible video. Good on you for owning your quick flips - sometimes you just have a good feeling and it pays off. Scalping Lego pisses people off more than reselling other products so you can risk offending your customers if you're selling more than just a one off sale. So if you scalp you risk holding the set for years, getting banned if you return too many sets, pissing off collectors who will also be your customers and you WILL get hateful responses to your ads if you sell locally. Not only that but the margins are so low that it's nearly pointless. As someone who has tried it many times it is absolutely not worth while.

Hey Jake, that is also a lesson I learned in the last years of LEGO investing. An exception for me was the Batmobile 76139 that comes on release day with a mini batmobile 40433. I wanted to build the 76139 and I did sold the 40433 for around 100€. I often find myself being tempted to buy a set on release because the GWP is pretty nice, but in most cases this does not pay well :)

    • @JakesBricks
      @JakesBricks  Před 9 měsíci +1

Perfect exception! This is not a universal rule and their are definitely some outliers. That mini batmobile is worth crazy money

Good points - only time to buy on release day is if a gift set you really want is included or if its a set you want to build.

Yes, this seems like common sense. Could also be applied to people who buy to build, if their priority is saving money. There will always be store sales/lower prices on the used market in a few months

Great video and advice . The only reason I would buy a set on release day is because I really want it to add and build to my collection but 100 percent to buy day 1 to sell . There is no money to be made as a matter of fact right now retired sets aren’t selling at great returns right now. I feared this would happen as the economic environment is not looking good and inflation is hurting families big time. I’ve been in business over 25 years and trust me things aren’t good out there and as a contractor it’s bad news and more pin to come. Be cautious as many are now hoarding to sell and with the massive price increases I see many many sets being held for years.

    Hi there!
I am a LEGO addict, mainly LEGO STAR WARS theme.
I collect mainly star wars minifigures and UCS Star wars sets.
I have been watching lately tons and tons of inventory in bricklink , mostly new UCS minifigures.
I have sent a message to one of the suppliers asking how did he get so many minifigures especially when we are talking about a 240 euros UCS X-wing set! I mean.... Having 50 of these made me think something is wrong...
So... we talked through e-mail and he even told me he already has the new UCS VENATOR Rex at sale and he sent me pics... The only thing they are missing is the pauldron which is made in another factory so they cant get theyr hands on it. The minifigures come from Mexico factory btw....
Anyway... i dont collect and hoard onto a bazilion sets to make money. I sometimes buy more than 1 to sell later and keep my hobby up (since we all know how expensive this hobby is....)
Thing is.. even though im not able to collect every single minifigure without saving money for it i want to have them all in the long run. I am now worried this scheme might hurt the entire LEGO market and flood the world with minifigures.
I am not saying only the rich should have the minifigures and how hard it is for some to obtain the most expensive ones BUT... What about quality?!
I bet these minifigures dont have the standards regarding quality lego has. So the heavy collector might end with crappy minifigures thinking theyr real lego which will eventually devalue the hole collection to the point its not fun anymore.
Just like knockoffs... you can buy old ucs sets from lepin or whatever but its not the same... the value is not the same... you can let the dust cover the set and you wont bother about it because it was so.... cheap? I clean my lego sets and i manage my lego minifigure collection with pride and taste. I watch it everyday before going to work because i do love it.
My question is what will LEGO do about it? It seems there is no information about this whatsoever....
    Have a great day/life everyone! :)

A lot of thoughts here and I don't think I can ultimately answer that question. LEGO has tried but not actively to shut down counter fitters. TBH the only way to truly shut them down is if people stop buying their stuff which won't happen any time soon. It's just the nature of the beast of business I guess

I save up until October November. If a set has low stock I buy before black friday like republic fighter tank. If there’s a lot of stock it will go off shelves later like december. Also, the later you buy sets the more sure it will retire or not.

GWPs. Sometimes it is better to buy on release day. I sell those. Now for people who keep GWPs then that's the tradeoff. You either want GWPs for personal or you wait to get them discounted. I usually wait for discounts, but since I don't have attachments to GWPs it works out for me to get bigger discounts by selling. May 4 promos is a prime example. Sold for $80 each.
